On a Friday evening in December, two weeks before Christmas, I lost my job. I hadn’t seen it coming. I was excited for the weekend, when my daughter, Kristil, then 12, and I planned to get our Christmas tree. Then I listened to my voicemail: “We’re sorry but your work assignment has ended as of today.” My heart sank. I wasn’t just a single mother; I was the only parent. My paycheck was survival.
Over the next week, as my bank account grew smaller, I crazily applied for jobs, but I was defeated.
It had been snowing on and off all morning. I noticed a woman with short white hair struggling to open her car door against the wind. As she got out, I realized it was my old professor, Mrs Heffernan. I hadn’t seen her since we’d met for lunch three months ago.
I’d first met Mrs Heffernan 10 years earlier when I was her student at Edge Wood College. Kristil was 3 at the time, and I sometimes took her to class. Mrs Heffernan was understanding and would bring coloring books to occupy Kristil.
Even after I graduated, Mrs Heffernan kept in touch. I had grown to love her like family.
I rushed to the front of my building. “What are you doing out in this weather ” I asked as we hugged.
“Well, I tried to call last week but couldn’t get through. Then I called your job and they said you weren’t working there anymore, so I thought I would come by,” she said. “I have gifts for you and Kristil.”
I made her a cup of tea and we talked. Just being in Mrs Heffernan’s presence gave me hope that things would be all right.
As she got up to leave she handed me a Christmas card and kissed me on the cheek. I walked her to her car and waved as she pulled away.
When I opened her card I was in shock. Hundred-dollar bills fell onto the table. Tears of gratitude filled my eyes as I counted. Mrs Heffernan had given me $1,000.
24.What can we learn about the author from the first paragraph
A.She was divorcing her husband. B.She was fired unexpectedly.
C.She sent an e-mail. D.She couldn’t afford a Christmas tree.
25.What role might Mrs Heffernan play in the author's life after graduation
A.A respectable friend. B.A life advisor.
C.A helpful consultant. D.A professional expert.
26.What was Heffernan’s real purpose of visiting the author
A.To have a talk with her. B.To wish her a merry Christmas.
C.To offer her some financial help. D.To give her daughter coloring books.
27.Which words can best describe Mrs Heffernan
A.Friendly and confident. B.Wealthy and optimistic.
C.Warm-hearted and brave. D.Kind-hearted and generous.

Have you ever noticed that some songs start with a “one, two, three, four” You can hear it in songs by many different artists. But why are they counting The counting you hear is a small clue to a big fact — math is behind almost everything in music! Let’s wonder together!
First, let’s start with “counting in”. Musicians will often count to make sure that they all start the song at the same time. Once they start together, everyone has to stay on the same beat. Every song has a steady beat. One of the first ways that young children can start to learn math ideas is learning how to make a steady beat!
A steady beat is one kind of pattern. Other patterns in music relate to math, too. We can see patterns in how far apart notes are from each other. Sometimes we play more than one note at a time.
Musicians also need numbers to understand how to play music. If you look at written music, you will see two numbers on the left side. Often, the numbers are 4/4. This is called the time signature. The top number of it tells the musician how many beats are in each part of the line of music. The second number tells us what type of note gets one beat. The “4” on the bottom lets us know that a quarter note gets one beat.
It is clear that music is good for our brains, whether or not it makes us better at math. Playing music uses several parts of your brain at the same time. Musicians need to use their brains to see the music, hear the notes, and touch the instrument in just the right ways to make sounds!
These are just a few of the ways that music and math are related. As you learn more about music and math, you’ll see more connections!
28.What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A.To give some examples.
B.To introduce the main topic.
C.To present an academic achievement.
D.To list the impact of some famous musicians.
29.What does the second number of the time signature mean
A.What category of note gets one beat.
B.What varieties songs should have.
C.How many beats are in each measure.
D.How the former note is transformed into the next.
30.How does the author think about learning music
A. Time-consuming but relaxing. B.Complicated but rewarding.
C.Dizzy but powerful. D.Expensive but pleasant.
31.What can be inferred from the text
A.To learn math well, you should have a good command of music.
B.The performance of one’s music may have an effect on that of one’s math.
C.The more you learn music, the more broadminded you will be.
D.People’s taste in music varies from person to person.

A new study analyzing stone tools from southern China provides the earliest evidence of rice harvesting, dating to as early as 10,000 years ago. The researchers identified two methods of harvesting rice, which helped start rice domestication.
To harvest rice, some sort of tools would have been needed. “For quite a long time, one of the puzzles has been that harvesting tools have not been found in southern China from the early Neolithic period or New Stone Age (10,000 — 7,000 Before Present) — the time period when we know rice began to be domesticated,” says lead author Jiajing Wang, an assistant professor of anthropology at Dartmouth.
“However, when archaeologists (考古学家) were working at several early Neolithic sites in the Lower Yangtze River Valley, they found a lot of small pieces of stone, which had sharp edges that could have been used for harvesting plants.”“Maybe some of those small stone pieces were rice harvesting tools, which is what our results show.”
In the Lower Yangtze River Valley, the two earliest Neolithic culture groups were the Shangshan and Kuahuqiao.
The researchers examined 52 flaked (成薄片的) stone tools from the Shangshan and Hehuashan sites, the latter of which was occupied by Shangshan and Kuahuqiao cultures.
To determine if the stone flakes were used for harvesting rice, the team conducted use-wear and phytolith residue (植物化石残渣) analyses.
For the use-wear analysis, micro-scratches on the tools’ surfaces were examined under a microscope. The results showed that 30 flakes have use-wear patterns similar to those produced by harvesting siliceous (silica-rich) plants, likely including rice.
Through the phytolith residue analysis, the researchers analyzed the microscopic residue left on the stone flakes known as “phytoliths”(silica skeletons of plants). They found that 28 of the tools contained rice phytoliths.
“What’s interesting about rice phytoliths is that rice husk and leaves produce different kinds of phytolith, which enabled us to determine how the rice was harvested,” says Wang.
The findings from the use-wear and phytolith analyses illustrated that two types of rice harvesting methods were used — “finger-knife” and “sickle” techniques. Both methods are still used in southern China today.
32.What is the long-lasting puzzle about southern China
A.It has a history of 10,000 years.
B.It produces many harvesting tools.
C.Rice could hardly grow in that area.
D.Ancient rice harvesting hasn’t been proven there.
33.In what tone do the researchers talk about their findings
A.Certain. B.Careful. C.Critical. D.Correct.
34.On what basis was the use-wear analysis carried out
A.How the stones were used. B.Where the stones were found.
C.When the stones were used. D.Whether the tools were used.
35.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.Asian countries are promoting harvesting methods.
B.Only two harvesting methods are still used in China.
C.Rice domestication existed in southern China long ago.
D.“Finger-knife” and “sickle” are very advanced techniques.

Alan Austen, heart pounding with a mix of apprehension and desperate hope, went up the creaky stairs tucked away near Pell Street. The dim hallway smelled of dust and time. After a long moment of squinting, his finger traced a faded name on a worn door.
Pushing it ajar as instructed, he entered a cramped space. Bare walls, save for a couple of shelves holding an assortment of unremarkable objects: smooth stones, dried leaves, a few simple clay pots. Only a plain table, a rocking chair, and a single straight-backed chair furnished the room.
An old man rocked gently, eyes scanning a newspaper. Silently, Alan offered the card that had led him here. “Sit, Mr. Austen,” the old man said and folded the paper, his gaze direct but not unkind.
“They said…they said you might have something,” Alan began, the words tumbling out. “Something that could…change things Make a difference ”
The old man’s eyes held Alan’s for a moment, seeming to weigh the unspoken burden behind the question. “Change Difference ” He mused, a thoughtful crease forming beside his eye. “My shelves hold little that shouts its purpose.” He gestured towards the collection. “No miracles in jars here, young man. Only quiet companions, often overlooked.”
He rose slowly, his movements deliberate, and walked to the shelves. He didn’t reach for a bottle, but picked up a small, unglazed clay pot. Inside was nothing but ordinary-looking soil. He placed it gently on the table before Alan.
Alan leaned closer, puzzled. “Soil ”
“Look closer,” the old man urged softly.
Alan peered into the pot. Nestled within the dark earth, barely visible, lay a single, small, very ordinary-looking seed. It looked utterly insignificant.
“This ” Alan couldn’t mask his disappointment. “A seed But…how can this help me ”

The Most Popular Sport in the School
Basketball is the most popular sport in our school. You can always see students on the basketball court after school. It's a hit among students for a couple of straightforward reasons.
Firstly, basketball is just exciting. Both shooting and scoring happen in a flash, keeping everyone hooked. Plus, being a team sport, it builds strong bonds and teamwork among players, adding to its appeal. What makes it even better is that our school makes it easy to play. With well-kept courts and fun tournaments, basketball is super accessible. The school has made sure that students can easily jump in and enjoy the game.
In a nutshell, basketball' s popularity comes down to its fast-paced fun, team spirit, and how easy it is to get into. It' s not just a sport. It' s the glue that brings us all together.
第二节(满分25分)
One possible version
The old man' s smile was faint but held a depth of understanding. He gently rotated the clay pot, letting dust motes dance in the slanted light His calloused finger hovered above the soil, and then tapped the pot' s rim with deliberate significance. "The courage to begin. That' s the oldest magic here," he said, gesturing to the humble pot. "Like every great oak born from a little nut..." His eyes met Alan' s, the real change starts by accepting the earth' s weight in your hands.
"Dear me, that' sit!" cried Alan, with a dawning clarity. The cramped room seemed to brighten as scattered thoughts collected. It dawned on him that his failed business lacked solid roots, rather than ample capital, and that his crumbling marriage needed patient cultivation, not flashy gestures. With trembling reverence, he cupped the pot, determined to no longer seek miracles, but instead to embrace the very duty to nurture. "It' s not about what this seed is,” he murmured, meeting the old man' sgaze, "but what l' m willing to become while helping it grow." The old man smiled at Alan.
