Meet sisters Emily and Olivia Kilby, the creative minds behind Wheely Good
Ceramics, a pottery business with a special mission.
In 2011, during a family holiday, thirteen-year-old Emily became paralyzed
from the shoulders down due to spinal cord-swelling. Before this life-changing
event, Emily was highly creative. But after the accident, she found it difficult to
continue her artistic pursuits. “I didn’t do art for years,” she said.
Then, Emily came across a man on Instagram painting with a mouth-stick.
Inspired, she began to experiment with painting ceramics(陶艺 ) by mouth. Her
mother and Olivia encouraged her, recognizing the value of art as therapy(疗法).
Emily found it a peaceful and fulfilling activity, though she struggled to find a
suitable medium at first.
The first ceramic they made was a mug for their older sister, painted with blue
butterflies, which held great meaning for the family.
Running the family business hasn't been easy for the two sisters. But they’ve
found each other’s support invaluable and have grown closer. “It’s wonderful to do
this as a team,” Olivia says. “There are things we could do together that we
couldn’t do alone.”
Wheely Good Ceramics is not just about pottery. It’s also about disability
rights. The sisters are passionate about raising awareness. “When people don’t
know much about disabilities, it’s easy to make assumptions. It’s not them being
ignorant,” Emily adds. “You can still do so many things with a disability. It’s just
about making adaptations.” Through their social media presence, they are
spreading their message of understanding and involvement in the creative
community.
24. What happened to Emily in 2011
A.She started Wheely Good Ceramics.
B. She won an award for her ceramic art.
C.She became paralyzed from a spinal cord-swelling.
D. She met a man on Instagram who taught her pottery.

C.A vase with colorful flowers.
D. A bowl with a unique shape.
26. What is the main goal of Wheely Good Ceramics besides making pottery
A.To make a large profit.
B.To become famous in the art world.
C.To teach pottery skills to people with disabilities.
D. To promote disability rights and raise awareness.
27. What can we learn from the sisters’ story
A. It’s easy to run a family business.
B. People with disabilities can’t engage in creative work.
C. Family support is important for those facing difficulties.
D. Social media has no effect on promoting a business.

This spring, half the country will be able to consider growing plants they
couldn’t have before. In November, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)
changed its Plant Hardiness Zone Map for the first time since 2012. The map
showed an average increase of around 1.4℃ across the lower 48 states.
People in Arkansas can now think about planting mandarin oranges in their
gardens. New Yorkers might steer clear of planting native sugar maples(糖枫)that
prefer a cooler temperature. We’re used to tracking climate change through a series
of disasters, but the hidden signs of it have been in our backyards all along.
Living by Walden Pond, likely the most famous pond in the U.S. , for about
two years in the mid-19th century, Henry David Thoreau penned the book
“Walden” based on his experiences. He noted when various types of bushes and
trees shot, when wildflowers flowered, and the arrival dates of migratory birds(候
鸟 ). Scientists think highly of Thoreau’s detailed records, as by comparing his
detailed observations in “Walden” with modern flowering times, they found plants
now shoot an average of 18 days earlier, having a huge influence on young insects
and migratory birds.
The updated planting zones bring both opportunities and challenges for
gardeners who can experiment with new types of plants but might find that prized
trees or bushes aren’t doing as well as they were a decade or two ago. If native
sugar maples no longer do well in New York State, what does that mean for the
ecosystem that has come to rely on them
高二英语第 5页 /共 12页
The most uncomfortable thing about the changes to the USDA growing zones
is that they are based on information from the last 30 years. We live in an age of
solastalgia (乡痛 ),a term that refers to missing an environment that no longer
exists. The time to notice and value the environment around us is now. The only
thing sadder than missing something that’s gone away is not realizing that so much
has already changed.
28.What does the underlined phrase “steer clear of” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Consider. B. Anticipate. C. Risk. D. Avoid.
29.Why do scientists consider “Walden” important
A. It is based on native species. B. It revealed climate patterns.
C. It is of great scientific value. D. It gave research inspirations.
30. How can we comment on the updated planting zones according to paragraph 4
A. Every coin has two sides. B. All that shines is not gold.
C. Things don’t stay the same. D. Misfortunes never come alone.
31. What does solastalgia remind people to do
A. Adapt to varying conditions. B. Mind and love the present world.
C. Realize and fight climate change. D. Notice impacts on an environment.

Every time AI drafts an e-mail or an image, the planet pays for it. Making two
images can consume as much energy as charging a smartphone. By 2027, the
global AI industry could annually consume as much electricity as the Netherlands.
And a new study identifies another concern: generative AI applications alone could
add 1.2million to five million tons of harmful trash to the planet by 2030.
Such a contribution would add to the tens of millions of tons of electronic
products the globe abandons annually. Cell phones, computers and other digital
products often contain mercury (汞 ), lead or other poisons. When improperly
disposed of, they can pollute air, water and soil. In 2022, about 78% of the world’s
e-waste end up in landfills or at unofficial recycling sites, where laborers risk their
health to clean up rare metals.
The AI boom rapidly consumes data storage devices and high-performance
components, which are usually replaced when new versions are available. To
calculate the e-waste contribution, researchers examined hardware use, lifespan,
and the industry’s growth rate. Their prediction is an estimate that could change
based on various factors.
This study’s biggest value comes from its attention to AI’s broad
environmental impacts, says Shaolei Ren, a researcher at the University of
高二英语第 6页 /共 12页
California, Riverside. “We might want AI companies to slow down a bit,” he says.
Few countries mandate(强制) the proper disposal of e-waste, and those that do
often fail to carry out their existing laws on it. Twenty-five U. S. states have
e-waste management policies, but there is no federal law that requires electronics
recycling.
Thankfully, some companies claim to be taking independent action. Microsoft
and Google have committed to reaching net zero waste and net zero emissions
respectively by 2030. They have many options to limit e-waste. It’s possible to
squeeze more life out of servers, for instance, through regular maintenance and
updates or by shifting worn-out devices to less-intensive applications. These
strategies are vital to reduce e-waste and benefit society, the study authors estimate.
32. What can be inferred from Paragraph 1
A. The Netherlands consumes too much electricity.
B. The disadvantages of AI outweigh the advantages.
C. AI’s energy-related issues largely result from image-making.
D. The environmental footprint of AI is alarmingly extensive.
33. What is Shaolei Ren’s attitude toward the growth of AI companies
A. Indifferent. B. Cautious. C. Positive. D. Ambiguous.
34. What is the key to reducing e-waste
A. Adjusting AI application frequency.
B. Prioritizing smartphone recycling.
C. Banning the overuse of AI completely.
D. Adopting device-lifespan-extending measures.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. AI May Worsen the E-waste Crisis
B. E-waste Calls for Proper Use of AI
C. E-waste Problems Mostly Blame on AI
D. AI and E-waste Always Go Hand in Hand

When heading to bed, people often do some things to promote sleep, such as
drinking a cup of warm milk. 36 The answer is varied.
“One reason that warm milk makes people sleepy is that it reminds you of the
person who was kind enough to give it to you when you were younger,” said
psychologist Michael. 37
高二英语第 7页 /共 12页
On the molecular level, the tryptophan (色氨酸)in milk has properties which
can promote sleeping. 38 Our bodies use the tryptophan from food, along
with other things, to produce the brain chemical serotonin, which is transformed
into melatonin, a hormone that helps you sleep.
39 That’s because the body transforms it into hormones that enhance
sleep. But in reality, it would take a lot of tryptophan to make a person feel sleepy.
Even if a person drinks that much milk, it’s unclear whether the high amount of
tryptophan would be enough to make him or her feel sleepy. Milk, after all,
contains many other materials that compete to enter our brain through the blood.
Thus, the sleep-promoting effect of milk is limited.
As for the temperature of the milk, there aren’t any studies that suggest milk
has to be warm for any of its psychological or physical effects to kick in. ___40___
It can in turn help to relax the body.
A. The calming association may help to lower pre-sleep anxiety.
B. In theory, taking food rich in tryptophan can make us feel sleepy.
C. The body needs the tryptophan in the milk to calm ourselves down.
D. Can the temperature of the milk accelerate the speed of our sleeping
E. The body cannot produce tryptophan, so people must get it from the diet.
F. But the warmth of the milk may help raise our internal body temperatures.
G. But is there any scientific evidence that drinking warm milk will make you
sleepy

In 1989, just out of high school, I was faced with the tough job of deciding my
own course of study, which was only three months away from university. In those
days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an engineer or
entering the financial world after obtaining a business degree. I didn’t have any
interest in engineering, so all I had to do was either medical or commercial work. I
couldn’t decide.
My uncle, an influential member of the family, recommended that I spend a
month in an international company and then a month at a hospital. Then I could
make a decision. I thought it was a great idea.
I was accepted for a month’s placement (实习工作) at a foreign bank in
Karachi. I had some insight into how the financial world worked, met new
acquaintances, and enjoyed the general relaxed atmosphere of the office.
The month passed quickly, and I was soon employed at one of Karachi’s
premier hospitals. The experience could not have been more different. There was a
tense atmosphere at the hospital. Days began sooner(at seven as opposed to nine in
the morning at the bank), and they were full of endless chores and late-night visits!
It was insane (疯狂的), working all day, all night, and then another.
I was starting to think about both of my experiences. The bank had offered a
more relaxing environment, better working hours and less pressure. It was exciting
and unpredictable in the hospital, but it was hard to learn and practice. It looked
like the business choice would win.
Near the end of my month in the hospital, I was on my way back from a
particularly busy evening call, and there was a public bus in front of me, and there
were some kids in it. While the driver threaded his way through the cars, I saw that

Dear Jack,
I’m glad to hear that you’re joining the Nature Park Day Tour. Here are a few tips, which I
think will make your trip more enjoyable.
To make the most of the tour, I suggest bringing a telescope for birdwatching and a camera to
capture the breathtaking views. Don’t forget to pack some snacks and water, as it’s a full-day
activity. Comfortable walking shoes and a hat are also important, especially if the weather is sunny.
I hope you have a wonderful time exploring the park and making new friends. Enjoy the
natural beauty and take lots of pictures.
Best regards
Li Hua
读后续写
All of a sudden, a boy fell from the back of the bus onto the road. He hit the road face down
and rolled over. Then he was lying still in the middle of the road as the bus sped along. Knowing
that he could die in a few minutes, I pulled over and carefully examined him. With the assistance of
a few passers-by, I carried him into the car and rushed back to the hospital. When we rushed him to
the emergency room and got in touch with his family, I went home, very tired.
When I visited him at the hospital the following morning, all his family members stood up
with grateful smiles on their faces. His mother put my hands over her cheek and began to cry.
“You’re an angel!” she repeated. What a feeling it was, to help save the life of another person!
When I got home that night, I knew what I was going to do for the rest of my life. This experience
taught me that sometimes those choices are made for you and that whatever happens is always for
the best.

M: I want to book this trip. I don’t care what it costs!

M: Hey, Mel! Are you up for some tennis today
W: Sorry, I can’t! I have to go to work, pick up Jake and Maddie from school, and make them an
afternoon snack, then take Jake to soccer practice and Maddie to dance class.
M: Maybe you should hire a babysitter to help you out!
W: Oh, I don’t know. . . it’s hard to find the right person. You have to consider her previous work
experience, the responsibilities you give her, and how she interacts with the kids. I would love to
have someone to help me out, though.
M: I think you should definitely consider it! I can refer you to this great babysitter, d Amy. She used
to work for my neighbors. She’s very responsible, a great cook, and great with kids.
W: Oh, that’s great. Can you give me her number I’ll talk it over with Dan and give her a call
tomorrow. Maybe this way I won’t be so occupied every day, and Dan and I might even get to go on
a date once in a while.

M: Ever heard of a man named Buckminster Fuller He was a scientist, inventor, and also a
great architect. What made Buckminster so special was his concern for the planet and human. When
you have a shortage of resources, he said, you get war. Thus, he claimed that to solve human’s
major problems, we have to anticipate what will become problems as resources reduce.
He was especially interested in developing more efficient housing; that is, a new way of
constructing buildings so that they provide more housing space with the use of fewer resources.
One solution he came up with in the late 1940’s is a structure shaped like a piece of a globe,
which amazed the world and brought him international reputation. That’s it for today’s Daily
Takeaway. Tomorrow we’ll introduce one of the most influential lecturers in Oxford University.
