Gap year volunteer abroad programme
Ready to break free from the ordinary and start an exciting journey of change Your gap year is your chance to discover what you’re truly capable of, and Projects Abroad is here to help you make it unforgettable.
You’ll gain real-world experience and support communities in need at the same time. It’s an exciting and different way to start the next chapter of your life after high school. If you are looking to do something this autumn or winter, we recommend our Gap Projects:
Gap Project 1: Peru & the Galapagos (8 weeks)
Gap Project 2: Kenya & Tanzania (6 weeks)
Gap Project 3: Nepal & Cambodia (10 weeks)
On a gap year programme abroad after high school, the experience can be designed to benefit your exact interests and goals. You can explore a career you’re interested in, like medicine or law, and add relevant work experience to your résumé (简历). We have options for students who’ve put off their university acceptance, and for those who don’t feel they’re ready for further education just yet.
There’s a lot you can get involved in by volunteering abroad on your gap year. You can protect endangered ecosystems and wild animals on a Conservation Project. Or, give children the educational support they desperately need on a Childcare Project. If you’re eager to be more independent, we recommend joining Flexi Trips to personalize your gap year programme.
All of our programmes focus on providing long-term, sustainable solutions. We don’t believe in quick fixes. So no matter how short or long your gap year abroad is, you’ll be part of ongoing efforts to make a real difference.

B [2025·江苏省扬州中学高一期中]
I am a multi-sport athlete and seasoned coach. When I was growing up, school wasn’t really my thing, but sport very much was. Athletics connected me to my school community by giving me a sense of belonging and success even when I struggled in the classroom. When I entered education, I knew I wanted to be more than a coach on the field and court—I wanted to help students like me make meaningful connections to school through sports.
I designed a programme around the concepts of comfort and stretch zones. On day one, I set up a range of equipment for different sports across a field. In groups, students discussed sports that they felt comfortable and safe playing. They then took turns selecting their comfort sport on the field, doing a brief share, and playing with their group. Afterward, we had a class discussion on the importance of doing things that bring joy and passion, and how sharing that passion with others motivates us and the people around us.
On day two, with the same field design and sporting equipment, I introduced the idea of stretch zones. Students formed the same groups as on day one and discussed which sports were out of their comfort zone and more challenging to them. Some of my students were shy and others slightly frustrated (沮丧的) as they struggled to perform the skills in sports in which they were not comfortable. Then we discussed, as a class, how even when something is challenging, if we recognize the difficulty and intentionally practise, we give ourselves the opportunity to overcome it over time.
The programme required more than just adjusting my curriculum (课程)—it also meant some changes to the way I taught. I found myself opening up to my students and sharing my own hardships and successes with them. As a result, my students felt freer to be their real selves.
( )24.What did the author think of sport when he was a student
A.It helped him get attached to school.
B.It led to a decline in his grades.
C.It made him struggle in the classroom.
D.It appealed mainly to seniors.
( )25.Why did the author design the programme
A.To change curricula and teaching methods.
B.To prepare students for unexpected challenges.
C.To deepen students’ connections with school.
D.To share hardships and successes with students.
( )26.What was a problem facing the author on the second day of the programme
A.Students wanted material rewards.
B.It was difficult to group students.
C.Some students feared challenges.
D.The sports field became crowded.
( )27.What can we infer about the author
A.He is involved in one sport.
B.He used to be very shy.
C.He is in favour of safe sports.
D.He is a creative teacher.

Today, many people spend a lot of time reading online. Whether reading news or e-books, people are spending more time eyeballing (盯住) screens. While online reading opens up a great deal of knowledge to people, there are some disadvantages too, such as eyestrain, headaches, as well as difficulty in focusing on the text. Now a new reading system, Bionic Reading, developed by Swiss typographic designer Renato Casuut, can help people overcome these issues, and most importantly, it aims to help people read faster online and develop a more in-depth understanding of written content.
The reading system improves the reading process by guiding the eyes through text with artificial fixation points. To make it short: some parts of the words are displayed in bold (粗体). As a result, the reader only focuses on the highlighted letters and lets the brain centre complete the rest. Your brain can “read” faster than your eyes, so by essentially reducing the number of letters your eye needs to look at, you can read faster while still preserving the full context.
Casuut discovered the system by accident. He was working on designing a book in a foreign language and realized he could read it if he sectioned it off. He worked for six years to develop Bionic Reading and is still working to adjust it.
A preliminary (初步的) study was conducted by the Swiss institute Innosuisee, but more research is needed before it can be definitively shown that the system improves reading. Some people with ADHD (多动症) prove that Bionic Reading helps them focus and comprehend what they are reading. Other people don’t seem to notice a big difference compared to regular text. There’s also no evidence to suggest Bionic Reading is any better than regular text. The best way to know if the Bionic Reading helps you read better online is to try it yourself.
( )28.What is the main purpose of Bionic Reading
A.To point out people’s reading problems.
B.To teach people necessary reading skills.
C.To reduce readers’ screen time and eye stress.
D.To improve people’s reading speed and comprehension.
( )29.What does the underlined phrase “artificial fixation points” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A.Words displayed in capital letters.
B.Useful expressions.
C.Difficult sentences in the text.
D.Bold letters.
( )30.What do some people with ADHD think of the system according to the text
A.It is complex.
B.It can be beneficial.
C.It needs to be improved.
D.It has little effect on them.
( )31.Which is probably the best title of the passage
A.A reading project for ADHD
B.Research on language learning
C.A system to help with online reading
D.A tool for treating reading disability
D [2025·武汉市部分学校高一期中]
Randall Munroe, who used to work on robots at NASA, explains science in a fun and easy-to-understand way in his book What If . Once you get used to his unique writing style, you can go on many amazing trips with him and learn while laughing.
And you will certainly learn. There is a sort of joy in getting real answers to the strange questions Munroe is sent every day. However unusual the topics are, Randall takes them seriously. For example, if you set a meat-eating dinosaur (恐龙) free in New York City, how many humans would it have to eat to meet its need each day Munroe thinks New York could support about 350 dinosaurs. That’s good to know, but we hope we don’t need to use this information.
The book’s cover is a full-size picture of what the Earth would look like if the oceans were removed. The back has some interesting facts you might want to know before buying it [eating the book would give you about 2,300 calories (卡路里) if you could take in paper]. Thanks, Randall!
Although Munroe knows a lot and can perfectly explain the science behind the questions, What If is not a textbook. When asked what would happen when you threw a baseball at light-speed, he said there would be a shock wave expanding (膨胀) outwards, and quickly moved on. He is answering the question after all, but if you are looking for detailed classroom-style descriptions of what Munroe is talking about, you’re out of luck.
But that’s what makes it great. What If is light enough to attract you, but deep enough to make you curious about science one chapter at a time. If you’re willing to go along with Munroe’s ideas and guesses, you’re in for an exciting journey of the mind.
( )32.What can be found in the book What If
A.Stories of fun journeys.
B.Pictures of the oceans.
C.Latest scientific experiments.
D.Discussions of unreal situations.
( )33.How does Munroe deal with the questions in his book
A.He offers direct answers.
B.He pays no attention.
C.He recommends textbooks.
D.He digs into many possibilities.
( )34.What is Munroe’s writing style like
A.Formal and detailed.
B.Light but confusing.
C.Humorous and educational.
D.Imaginative but unclear.
( )35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.What If : a collection of funny science jokes
B.What If : a scientific adventure with Munroe
C.What If : a guidebook on healthy eating habits
D.What If : a question-based book about life

At the beginning of the new term, a teacher at Ringrose Kindergarten decided to do something different to choose “the Excellent Kid” of this term. One day the teacher brought a bag of boiled seeds, and then called the kids together, and said, “I am going to give each one of you a seed today, a very special seed. You are to plant the seed, water it and come back here at the end of this term with what you have grown from the seed, and the one I choose will be ‘the Excellent Kid’.”
Like the others, a boy named James received a seed. He went home and told his mother the story excitedly. She helped him get a pot and soil, and he planted the seed. Every day he would water it and watch to see if it had grown. After about three weeks, some of the other kids began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow.
James kept checking his seed, but nothing grew. Four weeks, five weeks went by, still nothing. By now, others were all talking about their plants, but James didn’t have a plant and he felt like a failure.
Two months went by, there was still nothing in James’ pot. He just knew he had ruined his seed. Everyone else had tall plants, but he had nothing. James didn’t say anything. However, he just kept watering and fertilizing (给……施肥) the soil, expecting the seed to grow.
A term finally went by. All the kids brought their plants to the teacher for inspection. James told his mother he wasn’t going to take an empty pot. But she encouraged him to go, and to be honest about what happened. James felt restless because it would be the most embarrassing moment of his life, but he knew his mother was right.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Paragraph 1:
He took his empty pot to the classroom.

Paragraph 2:
All the other kids looked at the teacher in surprise.

M: Really How come
W: My dad’s company sent him to go abroad. Originally it was supposed to be for six months, but it ended up lasting for a year.

W: Yeah, I’m tired, too. Luckily we’ve finished all the exams. We can relax during the summer holiday.
M: Yeah. And I also took my driver’s test today.
W: Finally! How did you do Did you pass it

W: You might have trouble with food and water.

Text 10
M: Most people may have experienced some of the best moments in their life. Do you know the best thing that ever happened to me It was when I lost my last job. Yes, really! You may be surprised and find it difficult to understand, but it is really true. I never liked being stuck in an office all day with computers and a telephone. Now my hobby is my full-time job. I start work very early, er…in summer I usually leave home at about 5:30 in the morning, but in winter not until about 8:00. I have a small truck, and I carry all my tools in that. It’s autumn now so I’m cleaning up the gardens—I’m picking up leaves and pulling up old summer flowers. Oh, and I’m planting small trees too. At weekends, my wife and I often drive to the country and explore fun things. I’m interested in collecting old radios and she likes to collect old cookery books. I don’t earn much, but enough for my hobby. I’m a very happy man.

One possible version:
Dear Tom,
It’s my great privilege/honour to record a short video about my campus life for your classmates. I’m writing to tell you what will be included in the video.
First of all, as a student, taking different classes is my daily routine, so I would like to record a scene focusing on one of my Chinese classes to show my academic life and Chinese culture. In addition, a wide variety of extra-curricular activities are held every day in my school and therefore showing my after-school activities is also in my plan, from which your classmates can learn the diversity of Chinese high school life.
If there is anything that needs improving, please don’t hesitate to tell me. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

One possible version:
He took his empty pot to the classroom. Ashamed and anxious, James held his empty pot tightly, his eyes falling on others’ pots with various plants. He took a deep breath, gathered his courage and stepped up to the teacher with great caution, murmuring “sorry” as tears fell from his eyes. James stood there as the other kids laughed at him. The class was eagerly expecting the announcement of the winner when the teacher cleared her throat and declared, “The Excellent Kid is James!”
All the other kids looked at the teacher in surprise. Whispers spread throughout the classroom; the whole class was enveloped in confusion. At that moment, the teacher patted James on the head gently and explained, “Those seeds are all boiled, and they are a test of honesty.” Upon hearing this, most of the kids lowered their heads with shame. It was then that the gloomy mood faded away from James’ heart, and a sweet smile appeared on his face, for James enjoyed being honest.
