Retracing Charles Darwin’s travels across North Wales
Uncover the best of Wales as you explore the thrilling landscapes of Eryri National Park and discover the story of Charles Darwin’s 1831 and 1842 tours of Wales.
Day 1: Shrewsbury—Darwin’s hometown
Your journey begins in the welcoming town of Shrewsbury, England, where you will meet at Darwin’s Townhouse, which will be your hotel for the night. Named after and dedicated to the man himself, this charming hotel is the perfect start for your journey into Wales.
Day 2: Into Wales—on Darwin’s trail
Enjoy breakfast in Shrewsbury before crossing into Wales and following Darwin’s route through the Clwydian Range. On the way, stop off at a number of sites where Darwin was taught to “read the rocks and landscapes” by geologist Adam Sedgwick. Rounding off the day, you will travel through Gwydir Forest Park to reach your accommodation for the next few days, Ty’n Rhos. This comfortable, 19-bedroom country house hotel is the ideal place to relax after the day’s exploration.
Day 3: Cwm Idwal—mountains, valleys and lakes
Heading out from Ty’n Rhos, the morning’s drive will take you to the Cwm Idwal, the very first Welsh National Nature Reserve, and an important site in Charles Darwin’s scientific life. With its own plant life and unique, fossil-filled boulders, Cwm Idwal helped to spark Darwin’s understanding of rock movements.
Day 4: Anglesey—into the unknown
Today you will be exploring what is now considered part of Darwin’s first tour. No official records show that Darwin visited the Isle of Anglesey, but research has uncovered plenty of evidence to suggest that he kept company with Cambridge professor Adam Sedgwick to the island.

When Sam Fisher took his two young sons and their cousin on a hike in the Badlands of North Dakota, he was probably expecting a day of sightseeing and light exercise. What he could not have expected, however, was the group coming across the remains of a young Tyrannosaurus rex (霸王龙) that had lived millions of years ago.
Fisher and the boys were surely excited by their discovery, but they didn’t know what to do with the fossil (化石). Fisher sent a photo to his former classmate, Dr Lyson, an expert in the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Then, Dr Lyson arrived on the scene with a skilled team to dig up the fossil. Together, they unearthed the remains of the teenage Tyrannosaurus rex.
Their find was considered as an “incredible discovery” by the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. It is unusual to find complete Tyrannosaurus rex fossils, and even more unusual to find the remains of a young one, so Dr Lyson was excited when he realized what they had unearthed. The fossil, called “Teen Rex”, is between 12 and 14 years old at the time of death. Even though it was still growing, the dinosaur already weighed 3,500 pounds and was 25 feet long, though these impressive measurements still put it at about half the size of a fully developed Tyrannosaurus rex.
“These boys have made an incredible dinosaur discovery that advances science and deepens our understanding of the natural world,” says Dr Lyson. “I’m excited for museum guests to dig into the ‘Teen Rex Discovery’ experience, which I think will inspire the imagination and wonder, not only in our community, but around the world!”
The fossil will be on display as part of the temporary (临时的) Discovering Teen Rex exhibition, which will open at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science next month. In addition to the exhibition, the museum will also be screening a new 40-minute documentary T.Rex.
( )24.How did Sam Fisher feel when they found the fossil

A.Satisfied. B.Awkward.
C.Amazed. D.Alarmed.
( )25.Why did Fisher send a photo of the fossil to Dr Lyson
A.To ask for help.
B.To sell the fossil.
C.To find a museum.
D.To show off the fossil.
( )26.What did Dr Lyson think of the discovery
A.He believed it was just another common find.
B.He considered it of great value to science.
C.He thought it would attract little interest.
D.He was uncertain about its significance.
( )27.What might the author continue to talk about
A.A summary of the exhibition.
B.Details about the documentary.
C.Professional advice for museum guests.
D.Information on how to become an expert.

Nature works like a big clock. Everything is arranged in order and interconnected. Every part has its place and its role. Take the wolf for example. As meat eaters, wolves regulate the number of plant eaters so that they do not reproduce too many. All animals and plants are closely related in a system.
The wolves remind me of a story from my childhood when my grandfather gave me an old clock. The first thing I did was take the clock apart to find out how it worked. Even though I was sure that I knew how to put it together in working order, I couldn’t do it. After I rebuilt it, there were a few parts left over and a grandfather who was not in the best of moods. In the wild, wolves play the role of such parts. If we remove them, not only do the enemies of sheep and cattle disappear, but the system of nature also begins to run differently, so differently that rivers change course and many local bird species (物种) die out.
And things can also go wrong when a species is added. For example, the introduction of a nonnative fish leads to a great decrease in the local deer population. Because of a fish The earth’s ecosystems, it seems, are a bit too complex (复杂的) for us to draw up simple rules of cause and effect. Even protection work can have unexpected results. Who knew, for example, that recovering crane(鹤) populations in Europe would affect the production of Iberian ham
So it’s high time we took a good look at the interconnections between species both large and small. It’s important for us to realize that even small interventions (干预) can have huge influences, and we’d do better to keep our hands off everything in nature that we do not have to touch.
( )28.What does the underlined word “regulate” mean in Paragraph 1
A.Control. B.Count.
C.Record. D.Increase.
( )29.What does the author want to show with the story in Paragraph 2
A.Curiosity kills the cat.
B.Every part matters.
C.Clocks are hard to rebuild.
D.Grandfather’s love lasts.
( )30.Why can things also go wrong when a species is added
A.Local species will disappear soon.
B.Rules of cause and effect are simple in nature.
C.The interconnections in nature are complex.
D.Protection projects are too hard to complete.
( )31.What does the author suggest people do
A.Pay more attention to small animals.
B.Stay away from protection work.
C.Take a new look at meat eaters.
D.Think twice before stepping in.

News about natural disasters, including volcanoes, storms and earthquakes, is updated daily. Besides, global warming is causing heatwaves to become more frequent, pushing the limits of human survival in the hottest regions on Earth. Recent record-breaking temperatures in various parts of the world have highlighted the dangers caused by extreme heat and throw light on the challenges that lie ahead.
When faced with extreme heat, the human body depends on its natural cooling mechanisms (机制) to keep a safe temperature. However, very high heat overpowers these mechanisms, putting human lives at risk. Research shows that the body’s ability to cool through sweating (出汗) begins to decrease at 35℃. Being in such conditions can put pressure on the heart and cause body temperatures to rise uncontrollably, creating the greatest risk to older people and those with diseases.
Recently, scorching temperatures have broken records across the globe. China experienced a historic high of nearly 126℉. America reached 128℉. The Middle East hit 152℉, nearing the limit of what humans can stand.
These extreme heat events offer a look at the future, as global warming continues to push temperatures. The frequency of dangerously high temperatures has more than doubled since 1979, according to research in 2020.
The seriousness and widespread nature of ongoing heatwaves highlight that climate change is a global problem with far-reaching effects. Human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels (化石燃料), have greatly contributed to the rise in heat-trapping greenhouse gases, leading to more heatwaves and other extreme weather events. It is high time to cut down on greenhouse gases and choose cleaner renewable energy sources. International cooperation and leadership are necessary to reduce the effect of climate change on our planet and protect the well-being of future generations.

A.It controls the cooling mechanisms.
B.It becomes less effective at 35℃.
C.It increases heart efficiency in heat.
D.It improves cooling in all conditions.
( )34.What is the data in Paragraph 3 about
A.Temperature limits what humans can stand.
B.Frequencies of dangerously high temperatures.
C.Global average temperatures at different time periods.
D.Record-breaking temperatures in specific countries.
( )35.What is the author’s main purpose in writing the last paragraph
A.To call on stopping using fossil fuels.
B.To call on ignoring extreme weather events.
C.To call on working internationally to address climate change.
D.To call on cutting down on cleaner renewable energy.

An off-duty officer from the New York Fire Department saved a man from a burning car on his way to a family vacation.
Early Monday morning, George Healy, who has served the city for 34 years, was beginning an 18-hour drive to Disney with his family. As they travelled along the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn, traffic came to a sudden stop, and Healy noticed there was a serious accident ahead.
Realizing the signs of a fire, Healy went into action hurriedly. “I jumped out of the car and started running up the highway,” he said. Healy arrived at the site (现场) to find broken pieces here and there across the road.
Two cars were so badly damaged (损坏). Luckily, someone had called 911. An ambulance (救护车) had arrived, and the doctors and nurses were hurrying to deal with the injured. Both drivers were seriously injured and they were taken to the ambulance for first aid.
And more seriously, one car caught fire, and the fire was spreading quickly. The car was filling with smoke, and the fire was burning wildly almost in the whole car. The situation was getting worse. Even more unfortunately, there was a passenger in the back seat of the car, who was also seriously injured. He must be taken out as soon as possible.
With the passenger door damaged so seriously and the fire burning everywhere, Healy quickly judged the bad situation and realized that the man was unconscious (无意识的) in the back seat. As the fire grew more dangerous, Healy, along with a police officer who had just arrived at the site, immediately took action to save the injured passenger.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Paragraph 1:
The injured man was in danger of dying at any time.

Paragraph 2:
Days later, the injured man phoned Healy to express his thanks after he became conscious.

Text 10
W: Good morning, everybody. I’m Mary Stone. Today I’m going to share with you my hurricane experience. Well, it was my first hurricane since my family moved here to North Carolina. Before it came, we had continual day warnings of it from the radio, the TV and the newspapers for a week. We had to get everything out of the yard. We didn’t have a basement or a storeroom, so we put the yard furniture and waste containers into the garage. And we bought lots and lots of food and water. We even filled the bath with water. We also checked the flashlights and the small radio in case they couldn’t work. The hurricane was terrible. The rain was so heavy that we couldn’t see out the windows. The wind was about 80 miles an hour and it reached 100 miles an hour at times. It knocked down the power lines and we didn’t have electricity for two days. We were lucky. Only one tree came down in the backyard. I was so scared! Most of the time, I stayed in the bathroom. But my husband was more relaxed. He lit candles and listened to the news on the radio.

One possible version:
The injured man was in danger of dying at any time. Healy, without hesitation, broke the back window of the car with a tyre iron he had in his own vehicle. Despite the intense heat and smoke, he managed to crawl into the burning car. With great difficulty, he unfastened the passenger’s seat belt and, with the help of the police officer, carefully pulled the unconscious man out of the vehicle. They quickly moved him to a safe distance from the fire, where doctors and nurses could take over and provide emergency medical assistance. Healy’s quick thinking and brave actions undoubtedly saved the man’s life.
Days later, the injured man phoned Healy to express his thanks after he became conscious. He tearfully shared how he had been trapped and feared for his life until Healy appeared like a guardian angel. The man’s family also reached out to Healy, expressing their deep gratitude. They invited Healy and his family to a special thank-you dinner, where they could personally show their appreciation. Healy, humbled by the experience, simply said, “I was just doing my job.” However, for the man and his family, Healy’s actions were nothing less than heroic, and they would forever be grateful to the off-duty firefighter who turned a vacation into a lifesaving mission.
