In Katmai National Park, a mother bear and her cub walk towards us, then sit down and nap, completely at ease with us being around. And the feeling is shared. My husband, nervous about being near such large predators (捕食者) an hour ago, now relaxes so much that he falls asleep in the grass too.
The Katmai coast can only be reached by air or sea. Its faraway location helps keep bear viewing safe. Our guide, Bachrach, tells us that the common view of bears as violent predators killing for meat actually only shows part of the picture. The Katmai spring sees bears feast on plants and dig for shellfish during low tide. From late June to September, they move to salmon-filled rivers for the salmon, but they also keep eating grass and berries.
Each time we spot a bear, Bachrach reminds us to read its behaviour. If the bear appears relaxed, we can watch for a while from a safe distance. As responsible visitors, we must never let it get too close, and never let even a bit of our food fall to the ground. Bachrach learned this the hard way after a bear entered a cabin and stayed near the door for days, expecting more after finding fruit. Besides, we must also avoid disturbing the bears while they feed. As they drink along the river, we carefully move around them.
“What do you think people get out of seeing bears ” I ask Bachrach.
“I’ve watched visitors go from hesitant to amazed, then comfortable, and then observant and thoughtful. Hopefully they learn to share space with wild animals. Those who don’t learn to share don’t grow alongside each other. And those who share, do,” he says.

A.He is uninterested in bears.
B.He doesn’t want to disturb the bears.

D.He feels safe in the environment.

A.Follow bears closely.
B.Share food with bears.
C.Talk to bears.
D.Watch bears only.
( )27.What does Bachrach hope people learn from bear viewing

B.To survive in the wild.
C.To increase space for wildlife.
D.To look after bears thoughtfully.

On holiday, many will find themselves in places where they do not speak the language. Once upon a time, they might have carried a phrase book. But now, many simple, free apps are good news for those travellers. With these apps’ conversation mode, people talk into a phone and a spoken translation is heard moments later. Maybe the best-known app is Google Translate, though small mistakes can happen due to its word-for-word translation.
Surprisingly, the best tool may not be a translation app at all. Though not marketed for that, ChatGPT, a generative AI system, can write messages in different languages, producing natural output like a native speaker.
As AI translation becomes an even more popular labour-saving tool, society may divide into two groups. There will be those who want to fully experience other cultures. This group will still take on language study, often aided by technology. Others will look at learning a new language with a different attitude: “Good for you, if that’s your thing, but a bit painful for my taste.” After all, most people do not move abroad or often have contact with a foreign culture. On their holiday, they just want a beer and spaghetti (意大利面).
As a result, some experts are concerned that AI is leading to a decreasing interest in language learning. Writer Douglas Hofstadter has argued that something meaningful will disappear when people communicate through machines. He describes giving a disconnected, difficult speech in Chinese, which required a lot of work but offered a sense of achievement in the end. Who would boast of (吹嘘) taking a helicopter to the top of Mount Qomolangma (珠穆朗玛峰)
While AI translation seems practical, we must recognize the social nature of language. When trying to ask directions in broken Japanese or make a joke in awkward German, you are making direct contact with someone. The best relationships do not require a third party.
( )28.Which of the following best describes translation apps
A.Free but hard to use.
B.Popular but expensive.
C.Quick but with mistakes.
D.Easy to use but slow.
( )29.What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A.Conversation.
B.Language learning.
C.Message writing.
D.Translation.
( )30.Why does the writer mention “beer and spaghetti” in Paragraph 3
A.To present an opinion.
B.To support a fact.
C.To make an excuse.
D.To give a reason.
( )31.What can be inferred from Douglas Hofstadter’s opinion
A.Reaching Mount Qomolangma is quite easy.
B.Learning a foreign language is less attractive.
C.Talking without the help of technology is worthwhile.
D.Making a speech in another language is too challenging.

Imagine a cat that does not need someone to clean up after it keeps an older person company and helps them remember to take their medicine. That is the shared dream of the toy maker Hasbro and scientists at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The researchers received a $3-million-dollar award from the National Science Foundation for a special project. They want to find ways to add artificial intelligence, or AI, to Hasbro’s “Joy for All” robotic cat.
The cat has already been for sale for two years. Though priced at over 1,000 dollars, it sold quite well. It was meant to act as a “companion” (陪伴) for older people. Now the project is aimed at developing additional abilities for the cat. Researchers are working to decide which activities older adults may need the most. They hope to make the cat perform a small number of activities very well. Such activities include finding lost objects and reminding the older people to take medicine or visit their doctor. They also want to keep the costs down to just a few hundred dollars.
It is an idea that is attractive to Jeanne Elliott. Her 93-year-old mother Mary Derr lives with her in South Kingstown. Derr has dementia (痴呆). The “Joy for All” cat that Elliott bought this year has become a true companion for Derr. The cat stays with Derr and keeps her relaxed while Elliott is at work. Elliott said a robotic cat that helps her mother to remember to take her medicine and be careful when she walks would be greater.
The researchers are dying to learn how the improved cats will complete helpful activities and how they will communicate. They say that they do not want a talking cat, however. Instead they are trying to design a cat that can move its head in a special way to successfully communicate its message. In the end, they hope to create an exchange between the human and the cat in which the human feels the cat needs them. By doing so, the researchers hope they can even help prevent feelings of loneliness and sadness among elderly people.
( )32.What’s the purpose of the project
A.To reduce the pain of the elderly.
B.To invent a robotic cat for the elderly.
C.To increase the sales of a medicine.
D.To help make the robotic cat smarter.
( )33.What can we know about the cat
A.It will be on sale in two years.
B.It may be cheaper in the future.
C.Its abilities will be made simpler for the elderly.
D.It can tell the activities older adults need the most.
( )34.What does the example in Paragraph 3 show
A.The cat gives much help to the elderly.
B.The cat can satisfy most patients’ need.
C.The cat works well to talk with the patient.
D.The cat can make the dementia patient happy.
( )35.What is the best title for the text
A.Updating AI: the future of robotics
B.Improving companionship: the “Joy for All” project
C.Affordable technology: bringing AI to every home
D.Silent communication: the language of robotic cats

Each role matters
The annual English play was an eagerly awaited event at the senior school. This year the drama club decided to put on A Midsummer Night’s Dream and among the actors was a freshman named Alex, who had always dreamed of being the star of the show.
From the very beginning, Alex struggled with the mind of being a supporting actor. He was given the role of Puck, a character he viewed as less exciting than the leads. “Why can’t I be one of the main characters ” Alex sadly told his friend, Jamie, who was the drama club president. “I have talent, and I want to shine!” Jamie tried to comfort Alex, explaining the importance of every role in a play. “Each character serves a purpose, Alex. Puck is charming and playful. He adds depth to the story. Without him, the play wouldn’t be the same.”
Despite Jamie’s words, Alex remained unpleasant during the early rehearsals. He played without any excitement, which caught the attention of the director, Ms Parker. She decided to talk to him and called him aside. “Alex, you’re talented, but you’re not giving your best,” she said. “You’re part of a team, and every member is important. Value your role and make the most of it.”
This conversation gave rise to a change in Alex. He began to look at the script differently, studying Puck’s character more closely. He noticed the importance of Puck’s interactions with the other characters. Slowly, Alex’s attitude changed. He started to take his role more seriously, attending every rehearsal full-heartedly.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Paragraph 1:
On the night of the big day, Alex stood backstage, in eagerness.
Paragraph 2:
When the play ended, Ms Parker gave Alex a bear hug.

W: How was your weekend, Mark
M: Pretty relaxing. I went travelling in Colorado and hiked Mount Elbert. It was tough, but the view from about 14,000 feet was worth it!
W: Impressive! How did you get there
M: I flew to Colorado on Friday morning, and then took a bus from the airport to Leadville. There I met up with my college friend. On Saturday we drove to Mount Elbert and hiked the mountain. So, how was your weekend
W: It was good. I learned to cook a new Indian dish. It was challenging, but I managed to do it. I even brought some to work.
M: Nice! What else did you do
W: I also watched a football match. I know you’re into sports. Want to catch up during lunch break You can try my new dish and give me some suggestions.
M: OK! It’s my pleasure.
Text 8
M: Hello, welcome to this week’s Meeting Artists. Our guest today is Mildred Howard. She will talk about her story with gardens. Welcome, Mrs Howard.
W: Thank you. To begin with, I’d like to share my childhood memories. Well, my parents had gardens. So I could always pick fresh tomatoes, pull out carrots and taste sweet melons.
M: Interesting! Many kids don’t know where food comes from.
W: That’s why I started the Alice Waters Garden Project.
M: Can you tell us something about it For example, how does it work
W: We design and build a 5-acre garden first. The kids, mainly aged from 7 to 12, work in the garden with their hands in the dirt. Then they take what they’ve grown to the kitchen and spend time cooking and developing recipes. This is the way they learn something about teamwork, creativity, and most importantly, where the food they eat every day comes from.

Text 10
M: Hello, everyone. My name is John. Today I want to say something mainly about my daily life. First I want to say my life has changed a lot. When I was a child, I had a lot of time to play. But now I have to study all day. I used to play baseball and basketball with my classmates, but now I just stay at home and do my homework. I seldom watch TV these days, but I’m often busy preparing for my tests. Books were my good friends. I used to read a lot of cartoon books and storybooks instead of reading textbooks all day like now. I enjoy doing homework with my friends. But my parents don’t allow me to do that, because they think we will talk instead of studying. I disagree. We can learn a lot from each other. My mother is a doctor, and my father is an engineer. They expect me to be a doctor when I grow up, but I want to be a writer. Maybe I’ll be a doctor anyway, but I don’t think I could be a happy doctor.

One possible version:
On the night of the big day, Alex stood backstage, in eagerness. He looked at his reflection in the mirror and whispered, “You can do this, Puck.” As he took the stage, his movements were confident, his voice clear and playful, embodying the role of Puck. In no time, he became the character, engaging smoothly with his fellow actors. The audience roared with laughter at his funny motions. Alex felt a rush of pride at the response of the audience. He was no longer the actor who hated his role; he was Puck, the heart of the play’s magic.
When the play ended, Ms Parker gave Alex a bear hug. “You were brilliant, Alex. You brought Puck to life.” Alex’s smile was brighter than ever with the director’s praise. The play was a huge success, and the cast was celebrated with thunderous applause. Alex learned a valuable lesson about teamwork and the value of every role. Apart from a success for the drama club, it was also a personal victory for Alex, who had discovered that acceptance and hard work could lead to the most rewarding performances.
