Unit 2 TRAVELLING AROUND
The benefits of travelling
[导读] 如果你想远离日常的烦忧,身心放松地投入到自然的怀抱;如果你想开阔视野,重获新知;如果你想锤炼意志,增强责任感……那么,就让我们一起去旅行吧!
Travelling is wonderful in many ways. It gives us a strong sense of longing for more destinations to visit, more cultures to experience, more food to eat, and more people to meet. It also lets us open our mind to new things and experience new life in exciting and different ways.
Travelling gives us the opportunity to say goodbye to our regular life. Since we all have crazy schedules, work and a family to take care of, going away alone or with some friends can give you distance and perhaps even make you realize how important these people are to you. Like the saying says: we never know what we have until we lose it.
Travelling gives us the relaxation we cannot get in the office. It’s nice to live life to the fullest and enjoy the stress-free time with ourselves. Going on vacation lets us recharge our “batteries”(电池) by disconnecting us from our regular life. When we come back we feel refreshed and we are happy to be back in our day-to-day routine(日常生活).
Travelling increases our knowledge and widens our perspective(看法). It gives us a new perspective on life and helps us change some of our habits or even create new ones. Discovering different values and ways to get by in life is really interesting. Besides, we need to visit new places of a new country and discover what this wonderful world has to offer.
Travelling makes us more responsible for ourselves. If we plan travels ourselves, we will learn to manage our time and money effectively. Taking care of our valuables like money, tickets and passports can make us responsible and more aware of our surroundings. Managing in a new city or country which we don’t know too well can give us the confidence to stand on our own feet, and make us aware that we can take care of ourselves.

A young family who have never camped in their life have sold everything they own to start a tour of Europe in a motorhome. Cheryl, 33 and Jason, 28, sold their house, quit their jobs and ditched (放弃) a normal life for a year on the road.
With their eldest daughter Flora, five, just a year away from starting school, the couple decided it was time to go on a family adventure across the world. Cheryl teaches Flora while they travel to prepare her for school next year. The family, which also include their four-year-old daughter Elsie, son Archie and dogs Poppy and Angus, have been on the road for a period.
Cheryl said, “Nobody would describe us as typical travellers. We’d never even been camping before. We talked for a long time about wanting to see different parts of the world, but we never actually thought we were actually going to. Our eldest child is due to start school this August, so we put it off by one year. We thought, ‘If we don’t do it this year, we may never will.’ My mum and dad died this year and after that I started to feel life is too short. We thought there must be more to life than working, eating and sleeping every day.”
The mum-of-three still can’t quite believe they’re actually doing it. After all, it happened so fast. She said, “We decided it at the end of June, sold our house in July, and then when August came around we bought the motor house and set off.”
Despite (尽管) being anxious at first, with the family sometimes quarreling, Cheryl thinks the trip has helped strengthen family bonds. She said, “If we have an argument there is nowhere to hide. You can’t go into your room and be angry. It means it has to be dealt with there and then, and it’s taught us to be more open with each other as a family. Every day is quality family time. B [2025·福建漳州十校联盟高一期中]
The hike to the lost Incan city of Choquequirao is one of the most difficult in Peru. From the town of Cachora, which is 161 km west of Cusco, it’s an 18 km walk to Capuliyoc Mountain, then down to Playa Rosalina, where travellers camp for the night. Waking early, travellers then have to cross the Apurímac River and walk uphill to camp close to the ruins. Then, the next morning, it’s another 2 km walk up to the ruins, 3,100 m above sea level. To get back Well, it’s the same way you come.
“I’ve seen people in their 60s and 70s do it,” said Juan Barrios, a guide from the Adventure Life company. “But some people come out thinking that because it’s only 28 km from the drop-off they can do it in a day. Six or seven days for the hike is best.”
It makes sense, then, that Choquequirao draws only about 30 people a day during the high season (June through pare that to the 2,500 people who arrive each day at the famous Incan city of Machu Picchu.
But for those who make the journey, the rewards (回报) are great: beautiful mountain views at every turn, and the chance to explore the wonderful ruins nearly alone.
Believed to be created around the same time as Machu Picchu, in 1445, Choquequirao is actually larger than better-known Machu Picchu. But very little has been written about Peru’s other lost city and researchers are still uncovering new parts of the ruins, leaving life on the mountain relatively untouched.
But officials say that the building of the first cable car (缆车) to Choquequirao will shorten the several-day walk to a 15-minute cable car ride. As a result, the number of travellers that now make the journey each week could turn into 3,000 visitors per day.
Choquequirao is beautiful now because of how untouched it is. Even though the lost city was discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Arias Díaz in 1710, the ruins still make you feel as though you’re the first to find them. Will it be the same when more travellers flood in (大量涌入)
( )5.What does the first paragraph centre on
A.The height of Choquequirao.
B.The hard trip to Choquequirao.
C.The transport to Choquequirao.
D.The amazing views of Choquequirao.
( )6.According to the guide, how many days for the hike is best
A.1 day. B.2—3 days.
C.4—5 days. D.6 or 7 days.
( )7.How are the ruins of Choquequirao
A.They’re still being dug out.
B.They’re in generally poor condition.
C.They’re being renewed at the moment.
D.They’ve been researched internationally.
( )8.What does the author think of Choquequirao in the future
A.It will be more attractive.
B.It will develop at slow speed.
C.It won’t necessarily take a turn for the better.
D.It won’t be more popular than Machu Picchu.

B[2025·福建漳州十校联盟高一期中]
The hike to the lost Incan city of Choquequirao is one of
the most difficult in Peru. From the town of Cachora, which is
161 km west of Cusco, it's an 18 km walk to Capuliyoc
Mountain, then down to Playa Rosalina, where travellers camp
for the night. Waking early, travellers then have to cross the
Apurímac River and walk uphill to camp close to the ruins. Then,
the next morning, it's another 2 km walk up to the ruins, 3,100
m above sea level. To get back Well, it's the same way you
come.

“I've seen people in their 60s and 70s do it,” said Juan
Barrios, a guide from the Adventure Life company. “But some
people come out thinking that because it's only 28 km from the
drop-off they can do it in a day. Six or seven days for the hike
is best.”
It makes sense, then, that Choquequirao draws only about
30 people a day during the high season (June through August).
Compare that to the 2,500 people who arrive each day at the
famous Incan city of Machu Picchu.

But for those who make the journey, the rewards (回报) are
great: beautiful mountain views at every turn, and the chance to
explore the wonderful ruins nearly alone.
Believed to be created around the same time as Machu
Picchu, in 1445, Choquequirao is actually larger than better-
known Machu Picchu. But very little has been written about
Peru's other lost city and researchers are still uncovering new
parts of the ruins, leaving life on the mountain relatively
untouched.

But officials say that the building of the first cable car (缆车)
to Choquequirao will shorten the several-day walk to a 15-
minute cable car ride. As a result, the number of travellers that
now make the journey each week could turn into 3,000 visitors
per day.
Choquequirao is beautiful now because of how untouched it
is. Even though the lost city was discovered by Spanish explorer
Juan Arias Díaz in 1710, the ruins still make you feel as though
you're the first to find them. Will it be the same when more
travellers flood in (大量涌入)
