[6分]Florida’s famous beach town is steeped in auto-racing history, but a vacation in Daytona Beach can also let you slow down for cultural attractions, lively riverside neighborhoods, pedestrian-friendly places for exploring, and a festival calendar that goes year-round. The following are the best seasons to visit Daytona Beach.
Spring: Daytona Beach Bike Week in February and March attracts motorcycle crowds and culture. During springtime migration, visitors can spot northern sea birds in coastal environments. In April, the Daytona Beach Arts Fest immerses downtown in juried art, creative craftworks, live music, and more.
Summer: June, July, and August are ideal months for fishing on the 1, 000-foot-long Halifax River, with no fishing license required. July is one of the best months for consistent waves at beach breaks along Daytona Beach. On the Hook Charters offers eco-tours on the river for dolphins, manatees, and myriad shorebirds.
Autumn: Mid-October’s Biketoberfest brings motorcycle enthusiasts back for live music, racing, and camaraderie. Saltwater fish species migrate south, and it’s a great time for offshore fishing for tarpon and sailfish. In November, the Halifax Art Festival spreads across downtown Daytona Beach featuring 150 artists who showcase their works.
Winter: Go kayaking and explore the welands in Tiger Bay State Forest, a habitat for black bears and a popular place for cycling and horseback riding on forest roads. And the weather is perfect for a round of golf at one of the city’s world-class golf courses, like LPGA International.

二、阅读单选(4题)(本大题共3小题,共24分)
[8分]Just as damaged teeth can be replaced with gold crowns (齿冠), scientists are exploring how gold can be used to repair damaged parts of the brain.
Scientists at Linkoping University in Sweden said that a “brain of gold” might just be what we need to fight nervous system diseases. The plan is to put gold electrodes (电极) into the affected part of the brain. They will act as “telephone operators” between nerve cells and electronic medical devices, enabling communication so that the nervous system can function normally.
Treatment plans that involve connecting medical devices to the brain already exist. However, the electrodes used are usually made of hard metals, while the brain is like a jelly that “shakes” at the body’s slightest movement.
“As the body is constantly in motion, achieving close contact between something that is hard and something that is soft and breakable becomes a problem,” explained Klas Tybrandt, one of the scientists.
This is why the Swedish scientists are using a new material called “gold nanowires” (金纳米线). As the name suggests, these are long, extremely thin gold threads — 1,000 times thinner than human hair. By putting them into rubber, the scientists have successfully created electrodes that are soft enough to connect comfortably with the human brain.
Gold can be made into structures as small as nanowires. According to Live Science, gold can be stretched, pressed or even rolled into all kinds of shapes without breaking. What’s more, gold doesn’t react with other chemicals in the human brain, making it a safe choice. Once placed in the brain, gold nanowires can last for at least three years, which is longer than many materials currently in use.
4.(2分)What role will gold electrodes play in treating nervous system diseases
A.Replacing damaged nerve cells. B.Serving as a communication link.
C.Activating different brain regions. D.Protecting the brain’s unaffected parts.
5.(2分)What can we learn about gold nanowires
A.They are harder than rubber. B.They are as thin as human hair.
C.They can be placed into the brain. D.They are in the final stage of development.
6.(2分)Why is gold a safe choice for use in the brain
A.It can be stretched by the brain. B.It can be made into various shapes.
C.It is being used to create soft electrodes. D.It has no negative impact on the brain’s functions.
7.(2分)What is the main idea of the passage
A.The unique properties of gold nanowires.
B.The history of gold use in the medical field.
C.The current applications of gold in the brain.
D.The potential use of gold in nervous system treatment.
[8分]Adolescence(青春期) can be full of worries and difficulties, but today’s youth face unique threats in a way not seen by previous generations, according to a new report about their health and well-being.
More than one billion people aged 10 to 24 are at risk of poor health outcomes by 2030, which represents at least half of the global adolescent population. The report, published in the Lancet, highlights rising rates of obesity and mental health issues, alongside the impacts of technology and climate change. “Even I was shocked by some of these numbers and future predictions,” says Sarah Baird, a professor at George Washington University and a contributor to the report. “It’s clear we are already in, and will increasingly face, a crisis of poor health among young people.”
The report, developed by 44 experts, including ten young people, has analyzed around 550 quality studies since 2021. “Life as an adolescent today is very different from ten years ago,” Baird notes. She emphasizes, “Given all these other important demands for resources, attention, and focus, adolescents have fallen into the background. It’s time to remind everyone of their importance, as ignoring them during this rapid change can be dangerous.”
These issues are interconnected; for instance, mental health and weight problems are influenced by technology use and climate worries. Aoife Doyle, a teacher at a London medical school, agrees that adolescent health is critical, “The Lancet report shows that there is too little funding for adolescent health in the government budget, which can’t match the challenges young people face,” she says, “These facts should push governments to fulfill their promises of complete health care services for all young people.”
While there is some good news in the report’s findings, such as declining rates of cigarette smoking and better access to education for girls, Baird warns that young people’s health is at “a tipping point” in a fast-changing world. However, she remains hopeful about young people’s strength and determination. “Young people are confident about the future,” she states, “Many want to do their part to create a better tomorrow.”
8.(2分)What is the focus of the Lancet report
A.The increasing cost of healthcare. B.The benefits of new technologies.
C.The health problems of today’s youth. D.The history of adolescent health studies.
9.(2分)What does Baird imply about the current situation of adolescents in paragraph 3
A.They enjoy more resources. B.They are being overlooked now.
C.They adapt to new challenges. D.They are trapped in the past.
10.(2分)In which aspect should the governments make efforts according to Aoife Doyle
A.Policy. B.Education. C.Investment. D.Innovation.
11.(2分)What is Baird’s attitude to the “tipping point” in the last paragraph
A.Pessimistic. B.Concerned. C.Doubtful. D.Confident.
[8分]One might expect that the ever-growing demands of the tourist trade would bring nothing but good for the countries that receive the holiday-makers. Indeed, a rosy picture is painted for the long-term future of the holiday industry. Every month sees the building of a new hotel somewhere. And every month another rock-bound Pacific island is advertised as ‘the last paradise on earth’.
However, the scale and speed of this growth seem set to destroy the very things tourists want to enjoy. Overcrowded beaches and the concrete jungles of endless hotels have begun to lose their appeal. Those countries with little experience of tourism can suffer most in a rush to make quick money. In recent years, Nepal’s forests, full of wildlife and rare flowers, were offered to tourists as one more untouched paradise, with the consequent destruction of precious trees and plants.
The people as well rapidly feel its effects. Farmland makes way for hotels, roads and airports; the old way of life goes. The one-time farmer is now the servant of some multinational organization; he is no longer his own master. Once it was his back that bore the pain; now it is his smile that is exploited. No doubt he wonders whether he wasn’t happier in his village working his own land.
Thankfully, the tourist industry is waking up to the responsibilities it has towards those countries that receive its customers. The protection of wildlife and the creation of national parks go hand in hand with tourist development and in fact obtain financial support from tourist companies. At the same time, tourists are being encouraged to respect not only the countryside they visit but also its people.
The way tourism is handled in the next ten years will decide its fate and that of the countries we all want to visit. Increased understanding in planning worldwide tourism can preserve the market for these companies. If not, in a few years’ time the very things that attract tourists now may well have been destroyed.
12.(2分)What does the underlined sentence of Para. 1 imply about tourism expansion
A.Its technical challenge. B.Its positive social effects.
C.Its potential drawbacks. D.Its undervalued profitability.
13.(2分)Why does the author mention “Nepal” in Para. 2
A.To support an argument. B.To make comparison.
C.To show cause and effect. D.To group related ideas.
14.(2分)What is the main impact of tourism on farmers based on the text
A.Increased opportunities. B.Improved work-life balance.
C.Transformed livelihood. D.Enhanced social status.
15.(2分)What may determine the future of tourism
A.Cultural diversity. B.Off-track destinations.
C.Stable market. D.Strengthened management.

[15分]Hop on the Silent Walking Trend
Silent walking involves walking outdoors without distractions like music or conversations, focusing on the mind-body-nature connection. 16(3分) That’s a slower, lower-impact way to relax and is great for fitness. Here’s everything you need to know about the trend.
Select a natural setting and fully engage your senses. For reaping the mental health benefits, it is recommended to find a quiet and peaceful natural location. 17(3分) Meanwhile, consciously observing the sights, sounds, smells, and physical sensations during the walk can significantly impact cognitive and emotional well-being.
To stimulate the mind, consider exploring different routes than usual. Without your favourite podcast or playlist, you might slip into boredom on your walk. 18(3分) And it might even be good for your brain. Scientists applaud the virtues of boredom for brain health, believing that it boosts creativity and improves social connections. And if you do get bored, rest assured that it shows you’ve disconnected from external distractions. Go with it, and make sure you take a different route each time — it’ll keep you motivated.
Start off with five-minute silent walks and eventually build up to thirty minutes. If you’re usually a headphone wearer, it will feel super weird to walk without your go-to tunes, but give yourself a second to adjust. Chances are, once you’re a few minutes into your silent walk, you’ll feel the magic kick in. 19(3分)
Regular reflection and ongoing documentation are essential. After completing a silent walk, take time to reflect upon any emerging thoughts, feelings, or insights. 20(3分) Journaling about the experience can also solidify connections between thoughts and ideas, providing a valuable tool for self-reflection and growth.
A.But being bored won’t hurt you.
B.Taking different paths can lead to exciting discoveries.
C.Adjusting the routine gradually can help ease into the experience.
D.You’ll also start noticing the little things around you more clearly.
E.They can deepen understanding and serve as a record of personal growth
F.Unlike exercise-oriented walking, it isn’t about reaching certain speed or steps
G.In such an environment, you can immerse yourself in the natural soundscape (音景) .

The Poster Contest
Shawn had been working on his entry for the school’s poster contest for weeks. The topic of the contest was recycling, and the winner would receive the honor of having his or her poster displayed all around the school. This was a big event and he couldn’t afford to miss it. And Shawn was sure his was the best in the class-certainly better than Neil’s!
Neil and Shawn were in the same class and the two boys competed in everything, and their test scores and grades were just about equal. They almost never spoke to each other, but everyone in the class knew they were competitors. One thing Shawn excelled at, though, was art.
His poster, which showed a garbage pile threatening to crush the school, looked really good. The only problem was the slogan, which was a little boring. It read, “Recycle.”
Mr. Wu evaluated all the posters carefully and said, “These are all excellent, but there are two entries that really stand out.” Shawn grinned as Mr. Wu held up his poster and the class clapped. But then Mr. Wu held up Neil’s poster, too. The artwork wasn’t great, Shawn saw, but the words written across the top were powerful. They read, “It’s Your Planet-Recycle It!” Even Shawn had to admit it was a good slogan.
Mr. Wu announced that the winner should be decided by a public vote. But their competition ended in a tie(平局). It was really a hard decision, for they both did a good job in the designing, each with their own unique strong points.
Shawn walked out of the school, with his head and shoulders hanging down. He knew the chance that his poster would be exhibited was dimming. When he looked up, he saw Neil walking alone a few steps ahead, his face stiffening with worry. He cast Shawn a look, but didn’t say a single word.
