二、阅读单选(本大题共3小题)
“There is no way I can live out of a suitcase!” I thought as we packed up our home in Venice, Italy. At fourteen years old, I couldn’t imagine leaving my friends, school, and all my “stuff” behind to travel the world full-time with my family. That was when my mom had the idea of dropping everything to travel the world and create a deeper connection between family members. Although I absolutely loved the idea of traveling the world freely, I couldn’t imagine leaving my life behind.
To my surprise, during the travel, we have learned the most important moments are when we live happy moments with our family and friends. As we travel, we barely carry anything with us except the essential things like clothes, a laptop, notebooks, and toiletries(洗漱用品). We each carry a backpack and all five of us share two suitcases for clothes. After buying new souvenirs or new clothes, we give some of our old outfits away to people in need and it makes us so happy to be able to give back wherever we can.
At the beginning, it was difficult for us to get used to never having a closet(衣橱), constantly changing hotel rooms, and never fully unpacking before we were back on the road. But over time we have learned to appreciate the value of having less — the freedom to live for experiences and the joy of traveling “light” in mind, body, and spirit. Many of the wonderful new friends we have made on our journey have opened our eyes to how lucky we are. We have met families in many parts of the world who live in small homes with no running water, yet they always have huge smiles and are willing to share with us.
We now know that experiences and memories are the most valuable things in life and that they can only be acquired when we let go of our need for possessions and focus on what really matters in life — enjoying our lives each day with the people we love.
4.What was the author’s initial feeling about the idea of traveling the world
A.Anxious and fearful. B.Interested but doubtful.
C.Pleased and excited. D.Confused but hopeful.
5.Why did the author’s mom decide to travel the world
A.To build stronger family bonds. B.To escape their current life.
C.To enrich their travel experiences. D.To ease the work pressure.
6.What did the family do with their old clothes after acquiring new ones
A.They directly threw them away. B.They kept them as souvenirs.
C.They donated them to people in need. D.They exchanged them with local residents.
7.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.We should let go of every single possession.
B.Material wealth and possessions bring happiness.
C.The family used to place too much emphasis on wealth.
D.Material possessions should not be our ultimate goal.
Travel is one of the most exciting experiences a human being can have. Imagine how Italian traveler Marco Polo must have felt when he found himself in China, seeing a way of life quite different from anything he’d seen before.
And how wonderful must it have been to Zhang Qian when he returned to China from his journey through Central Asia and West Asia His brain must have been filled with everything he’d seen and heard, leading to the founding of the Silk Road.
Some people have traveled all over the world, and travel is a way of life to them. But among the travels to a specific destination, the first is more likely to be the best. Imagine a person who has been expecting his first travel to the United States. Of course, he may have seen all the famous sights a thousand times on TV. But none of that would compare to the excitement of looking out of the cabin window as the plane lands, watching the cities and streets of the real America come into view.
Although travel is often just for recreation (消遣), it’s also educational. We may not know that we are getting an education, but we still are.
We’re learning every day: new words, new people, and new ways of life. But this learning takes place in the school of the world, not just the classroom. One of the lessons we learn is undoubtedly a moral (道德上的) one. As we get to know foreign places, we come to understand that there are many different ways to live, and that the way we live isn’t necessarily the best way. Just like British politician Benjamin Disraeli said, “Travel teaches toleration.”
8.Why does the author mention Marco Polo and Zhang Qian
A.To explain how the Silk Road was founded.
B.To present travel as an amazing experience.
C.To show how the way people travel has changed.
D.To describe important cultural exchanges in history.
9.What does the author want to convey in Paragraph 3
A.The best trip is often the first in-person experience.
B.One’s first trip is usually the most challenging.
C.There is always much to learn on one’s first trip.
D.People usually make better preparations for their first trips.
10.What can we know from the last two paragraphs
A.Traveling should be included in formal education.
B.Traveling improves people’s confidence in their lifestyle.
C.There is more to learn in classroom than from adventures.
D.A foreign journey may raise people’s cultural understanding.
11.According to the passage, what is one of the key moral lessons that travel teaches
A.The importance of staying at home.
B.The value of exploring new places.
C.The necessity of being tolerant of different cultures.
D.The idea that one’s own culture is better than others.
This might sound impossibly old-fashioned, but I still like the idea that education is about learning: facts, skills, culture, analysis, inspiration. It’s supposed to make us better citizens. But over the last decade, the goal of learning has given way to grades and degrees. The unfortunate result has been inflation (膨胀) of both. They rise ever higher; learning doesn’t.
To avoid discouraging students, some school districts did away with D and F grades. Grade-point averages have consistently risen even though scores on nationwide standardized exams such as SAT have not. It’s not that I think standardized tests are the final word in measuring excellence. But when the gaps between grades and test scores are this wide and consistent, parents and the public should not be fooled.
That’s true not just of low-achieving students. In a 2023 survey, educators said that close to half of students argue for higher grades than they earn, and 8 of 10 teachers give in. It’s hard to blame them: A third or more of students and parents disturb them when they don’t.
Unearned grades are damaging in many ways. Some students, armed with good grades, march off to college to find themselves in remedial (补习的) classes because they haven’t learned enough to take college-level courses. Employers complain that high school and even college graduates lack basic skills needed in the workforce. There are also complaints from college professors that the students aren’t even good at reading books.
Grade inflation has followed students into college. Some professors hesitate to grade accurately because of student evaluations, which are often more negative for tough graders. Remember that about 70% of college instructors are adjunct (兼职) professors who have few job protections. Many Ivy League students have learned to cherry-pick easy-grading professors. Yet a Brown University study found that students taking courses from professors with stricter grading standards learned more. We have to ask ourselves as a society: Do we want college to be a place of intellectual growth — or a performative exercise in grade fishing
12.According to the passage, what has happened to the goal of education in the past decade
A.It has focused more on cultivating better citizens.
B.It has gradually been replaced by the pursuit of grades and degrees.
C.It has emphasized learning facts, skills, and culture more than before.
D.It has become closely related to nationwide standardized exams.
13.Why do some school districts cancel D and F grades
A.To encourage students to work harder. B.To make grade-point averages more accurate.
C.To avoid making students feel discouraged. D.To match the results of standardized exams.
14.What can we infer from the passage about adjunct professors in college
A.They usually give students higher grades.
B.They are more likely to grade students accurately.
C.They have strong job security in colleges.
D.They may be influenced by student evaluations when grading.
15.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A.The Importance of Standardized Exams B.How to Improve Education Quality
C.Grade Inflation: A Threat to Real Learning D.Students’ Struggle for Higher Grades

Word came that the annual school sports meet would take place next Friday through Saturday. At the exciting news, the whole class burst into cheers. Without any hesitation, we set about making 36 (arrange) for the grand gala for us students.
With the sports meet approaching, we could hardly concentrate on our daily routine. Every day, we spent much of our spare time 37 (talk) about the weather for fear that the sports meet might be postponed again. Then finally came the big day, when the sports meet was held as 38 (schedule). The sports meet was pretty impressive. One of the highlights 39 (be) the parade before the start of the race. Students were marching past the podium with slogans high up in their hands, while spectators were screaming 40 (crazy). Shortly after the parade was over, the race started. Well known for running in junior high school, I 41 (recommend) to enter for the 3000-meter running race, representing my class.
Time was ticking away. Before I knew it, it was my turn to step onto the track. But all of 42 sudden, I felt a bit panicky. As I hadn’t received any training recently, I puffed and panted halfway. I was about 43 (quit) when my classmates cheered me on all the way. Anyway, I made it to the finishing line. Unable to earn a single point for my class, I was 44 low spirits. However, my friends came over and encouraged me to cheer up. It was their encouragement 45 helped heal the pain of failure.
Now two weeks have passed, but the memory still stay fresh in my mind. Disappointed as I am, I never regret taking part in the race. After all, being part of the sports meet is what I really care about.

Tomato Changed My Life
Doing things—without being planned was never my strength.
As a 14-year-old, I would refuse to go for walks around the block with my friends if I was the least bit behind in my schoolwork.
Unlike most teenagers, I lived not in my room, but in an unused kitchen upstairs where I spread my books and papers on a large round table. I spent considerable time there, working continuously for hours, and my mother worried. She would try to lure (引诱) me away. “Come and watch the parade!” she would call from downstairs. “All neighbors are out there!” She thought of all kinds of tricks-the swimming pool, ice cream, stray cats and turtles—to remove me from my -studies, but nothing ever worked.
Later, in college, the pattern continued. The library and my college dorm replaced the unused kitchen at home. When spring came along friends would stop by my dorm or peer into my library room to persuade me to play Frisbee on the lawn. “No, I would almost always say.” I have too much to do.
My college study days were gone, but not my need and love for schedules. My friends and sisters tried to keep me away from my plans, but they were hardly ever successful.
This summer, though, while house sitting for my parents, I was persuaded to change my plans in the most unexpected way. The sight of tomatoes growing in my mother’s garden lured me out of my tightly scheduled world. They drew me with the power of a lover’s gaze. Hundreds of them were turning ripe and red by the minute, decorating the garden like decorations on a Christmas tree.
“If I have time, I’ll make tomato sauce (番茄酱).” I told myself. But my long week in the house by myself was already filled with things to do: writing, and finishing a project that I brought home from the office.
Then, watching the fascinating tomatoes continuously falling to the ground in ever-greater numbers, again I mentally argued about all the things I had planned and needed to do.

47.【答案】
Finally, I gave in. I picked up the recipe that I had copied down from a friend. “Prepare a little bit of water with garlic and onions. Add…,” it read. I scarched for 20 minutes in the kitchen cabinet and pulled out a huge white china pot. I washed the tomatoes, cutting away sections that were spoiled, and sliced and threw them into the pot. I swayed the watery mixture as if I were washing gold. Meanwhile, turning on the stereo, I sang along with Billy Joel and reviewed a step I’d picked up in my swing-dance class.
A month later, my parents came back. They found a daughter who had discovered the beauty of flexibility. I shared stories of my tomato adventures, and we laughed together. My mom, the same woman who used to try and lure me away from my books, now shared in my newfound passion for the kitchen. As I stood in the kitchen, surrounded by the rich flavour of tomato sauce, I realized the importance of allowing life to surprise us. Those tomatoes had taught me a valuable lesson: balance in life is not just about sticking to schedules and plans; it’s also about embracing the unexpected, reminding me that there’s a world of joy beyond the limitations of a strict schedule.
