Father’s Day
Father’s Day is on the third Sunday in June.It’s a day to show love and respect for fathers.
Mrs Dodd of Washington,the US,first suggested the idea of a Father’s Day in 1909.Mrs Dodd wanted a special day for her father,William Smart.Mr Smart’s wife died in giving birth to her sixth child.After that,Mr Smart had to bring up the newborn baby and his other five children by himself.Mrs Dodd realized her father’s selflessness as a single parent.She suggested that there should be a Father’s Day for all the loving fathers.
On 19 June,1910,people celebrated the first Father’s Day in Washington.After that,in a lot of cities across the US,many other people also began to celebrate Father’s Day.Finally in 1966,President Lyndon Johnson claimed(宣布) the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.
Father’s Day has now become a day to honour(向……表示敬意) not only fathers,but also all men who act as fathers.Stepfathers,uncles and grandfathers are all honoured on Father’s Day.
On Father’s Day,some children give presents to their fathers to show their thanks.And fathers will certainly be happy to know that their children love them.
