For some of us, going to the dentist for routine check-ups is a thing of the ordinary. But for many people around the world, especially those in impoverished (贫困的) areas, having dental improvement and their teeth checked simply isn’t possible. A Brazilian dentist Felipe Rossi has devoted himself to helping changing that situation.
Growing up in USA, Felipe Rossi had just obtained the Bachelor of Medicine Degree and was about to start a master’s degree in Pediatric Dentistry (儿童口腔学) when a journey to his father’s home — Balsabo in Brazil — converted his initial plan. “All locals didn’t have access to dental care, and consequently, many of them suffered deformed teeth or even loss of teeth, leading to many people not daring to laugh with mouth open.” Felipe Rossi recalled. “A desire was planted in my heart. That is, to use my skills to bring healthy smiles to people suffering from dental problems.”
With the support of his parents, Felipe formed an NGO (non-government organization) called Porsorriso to give free oral treatments to individuals with low incomes who require cleaning. fillings, crowns, restoration work and more. His team is composed of approximately 30 registered volunteers who go with him to poor towns and villages in Brazil.
Sponsorship is generally provided by two private companies. Individuals may also make donations through the ‘Smile Solidarity’ program, where they can choose monthly amounts to contribute. Porsorriso also holds regular fundraisers to afford the cost of providing free dental services around the country.
As noble as its objective is, Felipe admits that Porsorriso is “struggling to survive” because of the huge cost of providing dental work and the constant fundraising events they have to hold to keep the NGO in normal functioning. “Challenging as it is, it did bring healthy teeth as well as renewed confidence to the locals. We will continue this transformative act whatever difficulties we will face”. Felipe said with a strong will.
4. How does the author introduce the topic of the text
A. By posing a contrast.
B. By reporting an event.
C. By assuming a situation.
D. By making an appeal.
5. What motivated Felipe to offer dental treatments to Brazilians
A The support from his parents.
B. The passion for dental health.
C. The encounter with local s lacking dental care.
D. The professional skills and knowledge from college.
6. Which of the following can best describe Felipe Rossi
A. Hopeful and diligent.
B. Faithful and ambitious.
C. Intelligent and creative.
D. Charitable and dedicated.
7. What do we know about Porsorriso
A. It gives free oral treatments to anyone in need.
B. It is cooperated by Felipe Rossi and the local authority.
C. It is financially supported by corporations and individuals.
D. It holds regular fundraisers to educate people about dental care.

Have you ever noticed how the email icon (图标) on many computers and smartphones is of an envelope Or how camera phones make the sound of a real camera clicking when you take a photo, even though there’s no shutter to open or close These are examples of skeuomorphs, which are when new things take on the appearance or sound of the object they’ve replaced.
Why would new things want to look like something old It’s all to do with human psychology. Psychologist James Gibson says one of the ways people understand the world is through affordances — objects whose shape tells you how to use them. When creating new digital technologies, inventors like Steve Jobs of Apple used skeuomorphs so people would know how to use their products. By showing people an image of something they already knew how to use, it made using a computer or smartphone easier.
However, as people became more familiar with modern technology, some designers argued that skeuomorphs were no longer necessary. Indeed, the younger generation don’t need visual references to older items they’ve never used. This led to something called flat design, where computer desktops and smartphone home screens started to do away with skeuomorphism.
Skeuomorphs made a comeback, though, with smart watches. Many smart watches took on the appearance of an old fashioned watch, with a clock face. This was to encourage people who didn’t like digital watches to consider buying a smart watch.
While these are the ways skeuomorphs are used today, that doesn’t mean it’s only a modern phenomenon. In fact, the word was first used in 1899 by the archaeologist Henry Colley March, who realized that some ancient artefacts (人工制品) kept the appearance of older objects, even though there was no practical reason for them to do so. When ancient Greek builders moved from using wood to stone, they recreated some of the characteristics of wooden buildings. From ancient Greek architecture to 21st century technology, skeuomorphs have been a key feature of scientific progress. So, when you wonder about the objects of the future, take a look around. Chances are that they will look a lot like the objects of the past.
8. Which of the following is an example of skeuomorphs
A. B. C. D.
9. How would people feel about skeuomorphs
A. User-friendly. B. Safety-centered. C. Energy-saving. D. Cost-effective.
10. Why did some designers think skeuomorphs unnecessary
A. Users became accustomed to technology. B. These products were expensive to design.
C. Young people rejected traditional designs. D. The existing standards had been updated.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The prediction about future objects. B. The key feature of scientific progress.
C. The design philosophies of skeuomorphism. D. The ever-lasting presence of skeuomorphs.

Glasgow University researchers have created a laser (激光) camera using AI and quantum technologies to remotely detect a person’s heartbeat, potentially changing health monitoring. Professor Faccio imagines various applications, such as setting up this technology in shopping malls or fixing laser heart monitors in homes. These monitors could be part of an extensive system tracking different health aspects, such as blood pressure and slight changes in movement, indicating early signs of conditions like Alzheimer’s.
Monitoring a person’s heartbeat from a distance holds significant value, as it can detect irregularities like abnormal heart rates, providing crucial warnings of potential heart issues. In contrast to the traditional use of stethoscopes (听诊器), this system overcomes limitations associated with proper stethoscope usage, such as the need for training and the potential reduction of heartbeat signals.
The system developed by Faccio and his team involves high-speed cameras which can record images at speeds of 2,000 frames per second. A laser beam is shone on to the skin of a person’s throat and the reflections are used to measure exactly how much their skin is rising and falling as their main artery (动脉) expands and contracts as blood is forced through it. These changes involve movements of only a few billionths of a metre.
Such acuity is striking, though on its own the tracking of these tiny changes would not be enough to track a heartbeat. Other, much larger movements occur on a person’s chest — from their breathing, for example — which would flood signals from their heartbeat.
“That is where AI comes in,” Faccio said. “We use advanced computing systems to separate out everything except the vibrations caused by a person’s heartbeat. We know the frequency range of the human heartbeat, and the AI focuses on that. The prime use of this technology — which we hope to have ready next year — will be to measure heartbeats easily and quickly outside hospitals. The benefits could be considerable.”
12. What can the laser camera be used for
A. Improving the usage of stethoscope.
B. Measuring blood pressure remotely.
C. Recording images of the human throat.
D. Detecting a person’s heartbeat from a distance.
13. What does paragraph 3 focus on as for this system
A. How it works. B. Where it is used.
C. Whom it benefits. D. What it is composed of.
14. Which is closest in meaning to “acuity” in paragraph 4
A. Consistency. B. Complexity C. Sensitivity. D. Intensity.
15. What role does AI play in this system
A. To measure skin movements. B. To recognize heartbeat vibrations.
C. To record images at high speeds. D. To shine a laser beam on the skin.
第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
I am a child of traditional book reading. I used to go through one book continuously from beginning to end, taking notes or highlighting lines before going on to the next book. It was a slow but deeper way to absorb a book. ___16___ My struggle with Dostoevsky’ s The Brothers Karamazov early on is a good example.
After college, my job involved reading a lot of background materials for projects. Many nights I stayed awake till past midnight leafing through pages. ___17___ It helped me breeze through my reading requirements. However, for books I was genuinely passionate about, I switched to a slower pace, and still read one book at a time.
___18___ I no longer stick to one book, but jump between them, spending about half an hour on each. Currently, I’m reading six books in various stages, with more lined up to start soon. My speed reading skills help me scan quickly without losing comprehension. I can easily switch to slow reading mode whenever needed.
Recently, I learnt from a journal that my previous reading method is known as “Blocked Practice”, which involves studying one topic thoroughly before moving on to another. ___19___ However, it tends to restrict how you apply knowledge in new and varied situations.
On the other hand, the “mixing it up” approach, also referred to as “Interleaved Practice”, could produce dramatic, long-lasting learning benefits. By switching between topics, readers can make connections between ideas and skills. ___20___ Over time, readers could be more capable of solving problems critically. If this is true, then my evolution as a reader of books has been in the right direction all along.
A. It helps widen perspectives.
B. This method has its limitations.
C. That was when I took up speed reading.
D. I’m not great at trying out different reading styles.
E. That’s why it took me months to finish heavy books.
F. Nowadays I’ ve acquired the habit of multiple book reading.
G. This approach can be effective for mastering individual concepts.

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Common water plant could provide green energy. Scientists have found ways to get large amounts of oil from duckweed — one of the fastest-growing water plants. Turning such plant oil into biodiesel for transportation and ____36____ (heat) could support a sustainable future.
In a new study, researchers genetically modified duckweed to produce seven times more oil per acre than soybeans. A biochemist said future work may double the ____37____ (engineer) duckweed’s oil output soon.
Biofuels, which are distinct from fossil fuels ____38____ form underground, possess renewability and their consumption rate ____39____ (exceed) by regeneration speed. They also have lower carbon footprints. However, biofuels face ____40____ (criticize) because large crop ____41____ (volume) are used for energy instead of food, and much farmland is used to grow biofuel plants.
Duckweed grows worldwide and is highly productive. It could be a revolutionary energy source for three reasons. First, it grows ____42____ (ready) in water and doesn’t need farmland. Second, it thrives in polluted water. Third, scientists found a way to avoid a major biotechnological barrier. For ____43____ new study, Shanklin says, the researchers added an oil-producing gene, “turning it on like a light switch” ____44____ introducing a particular molecule only when the plant had finished growing.
“To expand production to industrial levels, scientists will need to design and produce large-scale bases for growing engineered plants and obtaining oil is a challenge,” a researcher says, “____45____ duckweed is a non-mainstream crop without much existing infrastructure.”

Last weekend, I was standing at the finish line of the St. Francis Franny Flyer 5K (5公里赛) route, waiting for my nine-year-old son Kade to pass by.
Kade, though a fourth-grader, was already an experienced runner. He had been a part of a cross-country club since he was six years old. He had loved to run for as long as he could remember. He had been working hard to improve his endurance and running skills as he was determined to be a professional runner and compete in national and international races when he was older.
There were two St. Francis Franny Flyer races happening at the same time that day. The 5K race weaved through neighborhoods, from the church to Pinecone Road and back while the 10K followed the same route but extended north on Pinecone Road. Race volunteers were available on Pinecone Road to show runners the way, and there were also signs directing the two different courses.
I signed Kade up for the 5K race as a way to train him for the Junior Olympics. He had never run a 10K, not even in training, so the 10K race was never an option.
Kade was pretty fast and he set a 5K record for his age group at last year’s race, so I was surprised to see slower runners crossing the finish line before him. “This is weird. He should be ahead of them. He might just be having a bad race,” I thought to myself. But as the minutes passed, my worry intensified. My heart raced at the thought that Kade might be lost or injured.
Anxious and worried, I drove along the 5K race route in search of Kade, but he was nowhere to be found. A surge of fear and despair overwhelmed me, causing a flood of tears to pour down my face. I turned to race officials and volunteers for help, and people started looking for him

Dear fellow students,
Our school’s slogan, “Raising hands exercises more than arms” carries a deep message. Simple motions during breaks not only strengthen our muscles but also refresh our minds, preparing us for better learning.
I strongly support this campaign. Research shows that short physical activities can boost concentration by 20%. Instead of sitting still, let’s stretch and move to recharge. This healthy habit benefits both our studies and future lives.
Together, let’s embrace this wisdom: when we lift our arms, we are raising our overall wellbeing. Join me in making break time movement a daily habit!

【答案】Later, a volunteer told me he had spotted Kade on the 10K course. Knowing that he was safe, I let out a sigh of relief. Despite hearing that Kade seemed to be running well, worry hang over me as I realized he had taken a wrong turn and was now running a longer and more challenging race than he had ever trained for I couldn’t help but pace back and forth at the finish line, anxiously searching for any sign of my son. With every runner approaching, my heart leaped in hope, only to sink in disappointment when it wasn’t him.
Finally, Kade appeared and crossed the finish line. Relief washed over me at the sight of his face. I hugged him tightly, overwhelmed with pride for his courage, determination, and resilience. “What happened Why did you end up on the 10K course ” I asked my son eagerly. “A race volunteer directed me the wrong way. I didn’t realize the mistake until I saw the 10K turnaround sign, but I didn’t want to give up halfway,” explained Kade. At that moment, I knew without doubt that he was to become a professional runner.
