The first day,the boy drove 17 nails into the fence. Then the number of nails became less and less in the following days. The boy found that it was easier to keep his temper than to drive the nails into the fence. Finally, the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all.He told his father about it and his father asked him to pull out one nail each time he was able to keep his temper.
The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said,“You have done well, son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same as it was before. When you say some words in anger, your bad temper will leave a scar just like the hole.Even if you say you’re sorry, the wound is still there. If you h... a person with words, the wound is as bad as a physical one.Friends are rare(稀有的) jewels(珍宝).They make you smile and feel happy. So never hurt your friends.”

One day, while I was waiting for my father,I saw a little boy, around two years old, running freely on the grass as his mother watched from a short distance. The boy had a big smile on his face as if he had just been set free from some sort of prison(监狱).The boy would then fall to the grass, get up,without looking back at his mother, and run as fast as he could, again, still with a smile on his face,as if nothing had happened.
At that moment,I thought to myself,“Why aren’t most adults this way ” Most adults, when they fall down, make a big deal out of it and don’t even make a second attempt. They would be so embarrassed that they would not try again if someone saw them fall.Or,because they fall, they would find a good excuse for themselves that they’re not fit for it.They would end up being too afraid to attempt again for fear of failure(失败).
However, with kids, when they fall down, they don’t consider their falling down as a failure;instead, they treat it as a learning experience. They try again and again until they succeed. The answer must be that they have not connected “falling down” with the word “failure”.What’s more, they probably think to themselves that it’s quite OK to fall down and that it’s not wrong to do so.In other words, they allow themselves to make mistakes,so they remain energetic.
I was deeply impressed by the boy’s persistence(坚持不懈) and the manner in which he did.

C.An interesting game. D.A learning experience.
64.In the writer’s opinion,why can’t many adults succeed
A.Because they are afraid of being embarrassed.
B.Because they can’t find a good excuse.
C.Because once they fail,they won’t attempt again.
D.Because they don’t allow themselves to make mistakes.
65.What does the writer want to tell us
A.Practice makes perfect.
B.Failure is the mother of success.
C.All roads lead to Rome.
D.Each coin has two sides.

I was fourteen years old and I just came to the junior high school. It seemed that I would have difficulties finishing high school because I was a troubled teenager. However, one person came into my life quietly and then completely changed everything.
The first year in my school,Mr.Brown taught me history. He was quite different from the other teachers I had known. But I had to say that he was sure a great teacher.
One day,Mr.Brown called me aside(到旁边) and asked why I was a B student in his class but a C student in the rest of my classes.I passionately(情感强烈地) told him about my divorced(离婚的) parents, the gangs(尤指滋事的青少年团伙),the fights, the police—all of the evil things I had experienced. It was then that Mr.Brown patiently explained that the only person responsible(有责任的) for my situation was me.And the only person with the ability to change my situation was me,too. He told me that I failed not because I was a failure as a student. He encouraged me to become a better student.
Ten years later,I was preparing to graduate(毕业) from a university. The first person coming to my mind was him.So I tried to reach him and wanted to tell him that I really wished him to come to enjoy this important moment together with me.
I’ll never forget his reply. He said,“Who is this again ”
At that moment,I came to realize that I was just one of hundreds of the students whose lives were changed by him but he had no idea of his influence.
Mr.Brown never came to my graduation, but his absence taught me another important lesson. His final lesson for me was that we will never know or understand the influence we have on other people’s lives. And he also taught me that we all have the chance to influence people’s lives for the better or for the worse.
66.Why did the writer have difficulties finishing high school
A.Because he was too young.
B.Because he was poor.
C.Because he was a troubled teenager.
D.Because he disliked his teachers.

The Change Made Me Better
I have changed a lot since I was in Grade 9.In the past,I used to be weak and had difficulty in learning English.I felt tired when I learned for the exams.
Then my friend Tom offered me help.Following his advice,I changed my learning methods.Firstly,I listened to the teacher carefully and took notes in class.Secondly,I kept on practicing the new words by repeating after the tape. What’s more,I took part in the soccer club.I felt relaxed when playing soccer. It made me stronger than before.
What great changes! I get to know it’s never too late to change ourselves for the better.
