One possible version:
Fred decided to add his own comments to each essay. He spent hours reading every piece, noting the technical
aspects and the emotional clues and unique thoughts each student brought. For instance,he wrote,"Your words
about your grandmother's laughter made me tear up-AI can't measure the heart behind such beautiful
memories."Fred also praised the elegance of students'handwriting.Slowly, students noticed the differences. The
previously cold feedback is now paired with heartfelt notes, bridging the gap between technology and humanity.
Students started submitting essays with more vivid plots.Mia's work was an example, where she employed easy
comparisons. When Mr.Fred said her line about loneliness being a "gray cloud"was like a poem, she felt
delighted.Mr.Fred adjusted the AI too.Now the reports also praised shining points of the stories. One day,a boy

I was in college , and like most students at that age , I was searching for more meaning in my life
besides what I was going to major in. I was confused and felt the pressure of trying to figure out my
entire life at 18 years old. I was required to take a physical education class as part of my undergraduate
requirements. yoga was one of the options and the rest was history. I decided to take yoga , not
necessarily to reach spiritual awakening , but just because I thought the class would be filled with
people in a similar mentality as mine.
Despite my initial disappointment , the class turned out to be one of the moments that changed the
path of my life. yoga philosophy was what we learned about over the course of the term. I was
introduced to the depth of yoga and I knew instantly that this was something that I was interested in and
could see myself doing for the rest of my life.
After the term ended , I couldn’t wait to search around , eagerly trying to find a yoga class I could
attend. But I couldn’t afford. so instead of diving into yoga classes precipitately, I started reading a lot
more about not only yoga but many eastern philosophies. I dived into these philosophies for a few years
but never took them to a new height or put these ideas practically into my life.
I tried my beloved martial arts , but felt the spiritual connection was missing. I tried zen Buddhism
(禅 宗 佛 教 ) , but growing up as an athlete , I was desiring the physicality of movement. After
graduation , I gradually found that yoga was all-inclusive and could make up for the disadvantages of
martial arts and zen Buddhism since yoga stressed the harmony of body and mind. It also helped answer
questions I had about myself and my place in the universe and the insecurities I felt as a young man.
24. why did the author choose yoga as an elective
A. To gain a mental realization. B. To explore the nature of life.
C. To find like-minded fellows. D. To develop diverse interests.
25. what did yoga philosophy serve as in the author’s life
A. The reliever of academic stress. B. The turning point of life’s road.
C. The health-lifestyle enhancer. D. The reminder of self-control.
26. what does the underlined word“ precipitately ”in paragraph 3 mean
A. Hurriedly. B. Hesitantly. C. Guiltily. D. secretly.
27. How did yoga differ from martial arts or zen Buddhism
A. It helped make important life choices. B. It stimulated one’s athletic potentials.
C. It promoted all-round development. D. It emphasized the mind-body unity.

In the small city of kamikatsu , Japan , a remarkable experiment in sustainability is unfolding.
unlike most urban areas where waste casually ends in landfills or is burned in incinerators ( 焚化炉) ,
this town of 1 ,500 residents has made an ambitious promise — to become a zero-waste community by
4
2025 — a goal they’ve nearly achieved through constant commitment. Based on the newly carried-out
zero-waste policy , every household is expected to sort garbage into 45 categories , from waste paper
and metal cans to worn-out socks and wooden chopsticks , each requiring careful separation before
being delivered to the local recycling center. such precision ensures that even seemingly useless items ,
like tea leaves , find new life as compost (堆肥) for community gardens.
The journey began in 2003 when kamikatsu shut down its incinerator , a decision driven by
growing concerns over air pollution and environmental degradation. At first , the change caused
depression : Elderly residents struggled to memorize the sorting rules , while busy parents complained
about the time- consuming process. However , through consistent public campaigns — including
workshops , neighborhood clean-up drives , and school programs — the town gradually developed a
culture of responsibility. Today , their 80% recycling rate , one of the highest globally , stands as a
witness to collective effort ; what once felt like a burden has become a point of local pride.
Beyond waste sorting , kamikatsu has innovated further with its “ zero waste shop ”, where
residents donate unwanted goods — furniture , books , even half-used bottles of shampoo — and others
pick them up free of charge. This initiative not only cuts down on waste but also strengthens social
bonds , turning strangers into neighbors united by a shared mission. Children , raised on lessons about
reducing consumption and reusing resources , now teach their parents tricks for creative recycling ,
creating a cycle of intergenerational learning.
kamikatsu’s story proves that sustainability isn’t merely an ambitious promise but an achievable
reality through small , consistent actions. By transforming waste into good use and unwillingness into
full engagement , this tiny town offers a powerful lesson — when a community comes together with
purpose , even the most demanding environmental challenges can be turned into opportunities for
growth and joy.

Small setbacks in your day — like spilling your coffee or waiting in along line at the gas station —
can ruin your day. But the burnt toast theory is a belief that those minor inconveniences can lead to a
positive outcome at a later time.
what is the burnt toast theory “It’s a concept based on reframing similar to redefine. something as
simple as burning your toast in the morning , though it might be depressing and inconvenient , might
actually have happened for good reason , ”explains Dr. Markley. “ Maybe it slows you down a bit , but
it may also give you an extra two minutes to breathe while you wait for new toast. ”
The idea is that these depressing situations may have a domino effect (多米诺效应) in your life —
setting you up for something positive or keeping you from other problematic situations. Dr. Markley
says that even if burning your toast impacts your day by changing the course of events , the setback does
provide an opportunity to deal with, reframe your depression , and then refocus your thoughts and
energy more productively. And it doesn’t just have to be burnt toast that leads to you reframing your
day — it’s more of a metaphor (暗喻) for how daily troublesome occurrences can lead to a positive
moment in your life .
It’s easy to think that burnt toast is just like other positive thinking methods such as lucky girl
syndrome (综合征) or harmful positivity , which is a belief that you should have a positive outlook on
life regardless of the situation. “ I describe harmful positivity as throwing light at things that don’t shine.
Harmful positivity is not actually all that helpful. some things are allowed to be upsetting and not
everything needs to be positively reframed , ”stresses Dr. Markley.
“ The burnt toast theory isn’t encouraging you to be grateful for blackened toast. You can still be
depressed that your toast is burnt , but it gives you an opportunity to reroute , reframe and overcome a
small setback. ”
32. How does the author explain“ setbacks ”in paragraph 1
A. By quoting an expert. B. By listing examples.
C. By giving a definition. D. By citing a theory.
33. What can we learn about the burnt toast theory
A. It was initiated by Dr. Markley. B. It is based on domino effects.
C. It helps distinguish false depression. D. It encourages redefining negativity.
34. What does paragraph 4 mainly discuss about the burnt toast theory
A. Its basic principle. B. Its unique feature.
C. Its current popularity. D. Its future development.
35. Which saying matches the idea of the burnt toast theory
A. Each dog has its day. B. still waters run deep.
6
C. Every cloud has a silver lining. D. Misfortune never comes single.

Flowers and plants are widely believed to improve air quality. 36 It found plants could clean the
air in sealed environments , like space stations and that , in addition to absorbing carbon dioxide (Co2 )
, common houseplants can also remove volatile organic compounds (voCs) and other toxins (毒 素)
from the air : formaldehyde , benzene , trichloroethylene , toluene , xylene and so on. They are all
known to cause breathing issues and cancer.
37 A 2019 meta-analysis review found that , to achieve the same benefits as seen in some
research studies , you would need 10 - 1 ,000 plants per square meter of floor space. This would mean
having 680 plants in a 1 ,500 square foot home or office.
While plants may not be the only solution to improving indoor air quality , they can still play a
role as part of a broader strategy. 38 Additionally , studies have shown that being around nature and
greenery can have positive effects on mental health and well-being , improving mood , reducing stress
, and enhancing productivity.
When it comes to the bedroom , some people worry that plants may cause Co2 poisoning or
exhaust oxygen levels at night. 39 while plants do release carbon dioxide through respiration ( 呼吸)
at night , the amount they produce is minimal and far less than a sleeping human.
So , while there is some doubt about the exact extent of their air-purifying capabilities , flowers
and plants can indeed offer a range of benefits , from improved air quality to enhanced well-being ,
making them a welcome addition to any bedroom or living space. 40
A. This belief dates back to a 1989 NASA study.
B. As a matter of fact , this is a common misconception.
C. plants can raise indoor water content to healthier levels.
D. Home owners usually expect more happiness from nature.
E. More and more studies find bedroom plants costly to maintain.
F. However , plants’ air-purifying ability in large spaces is debatable.
G. You just need to choose bedroom plants for your space and lifestyle.

Fred was a pioneer in integrating technology into education. As a high school English teacher with
a bachelor’s degree in software engineering , he had spent years developing an AI system that could
analyze students’ writings with remarkable accuracy. The essays were scanned ( 扫描) into the system ,
9
which then generated detailed reports on grammar , vocabulary , and structure. The AI’s feedback (反馈)
was so precise that even seasoned teachers were impressed.
At first , Fred’s students welcomed the efficiency. “ This is amazing! ”screamed Lily. “ I get
instant feedback and can revise my work right away. ”The system also freed Fred from hours of boring
grading , allowing him to focus on lesson planning. However , after a few months , the enthusiasm
began to decline. one day , during a writing workshop , Mia raised her hand. “ Mr. Fred , the AI tells me
my essay is technically perfect , but it feels … lifeless. Like it’s missing something. ” others nodded in
agreement. “ It doesn’t understand the emotions in my story , ”added Carlos. “ It just points out my
spelling mistakes , ignoring my beautiful handwriting. ”
Fred dismissed their concerns at first , believing that technical proficiency ( 熟 练 ) was the
foundation of good writing. But as the complaints continued , he began to doubt. one evening , he
reviewed a particularly sincere essay by sophie about her grandmother’s passing. The AI had marked it
with an 85% score , noting minor grammatical errors. yet Fred felt deeply moved as he read the raw
emotion in sophie’s words. The AI had completely missed the essay’s emotional depth.
That night , Fred sat at his desk , staring at the AI-generated reports. He realized that while the
system did well in mechanics , it lacked the human touch that made writing meaningful. “ what’s the
point of teaching literature if we’re reducing it to cold codes ”he thought to himself. Determined to find
a solution , he spent weeks researching flexible ways , integrating AI’s precision with human insight.
