Local Advertising
Running a small business is challenging — over half fail within five years. However, local advertising holds the key to success. It’s more than promotion; it’s about connecting with nearby customers. A solid local marketing strategy acts like a guide, helping navigate tools such as Google Local Services Ads to boost visibility, even against larger businesses. Here are some common types of local advertising.
Types Media Form Pros and Cons
Online Advertising Put on websites, social media accounts, and other online marketing platforms. — Precisely target online users, especially young consumers by location, interests, and behavior. Besides, budget flexibility of the models is often controllable — Overuse of it leads to banner blindness or audience burnout.
Outdoor Advertising Placed in public spaces like billboards, transit shelters, and posters. — High-traffic locations guarantee frequent exposure. Besides, its 24/7 exposure can reach a wider audience. — Initial investment often comes at steep costs.
Broadcast Advertising Aired commercials on radio and TV stations. — As a comparatively traditional media, it can quickly engage large senior or middle-aged local audiences. — Production and airtime often drain budgets fast, and digital platforms are competing for audience, thus reducing ad views.
Print Advertising Published in newspapers, magazines, flyers, brochures, and other marketing materials. — Hyper-local reach makes it ideal and trustworthy for local specific communities or neighborhoods as a physical reference — Costs from design, printing, and distribution can be expensive, especially for color ads.
Small businesses can immensely benefit from a local advertising strategy as it enables them to connect directly with their target audience in their local community. It helps them build brand recognition, boost visibility and drive sales. Small businesses can also apply advertising strategies like influencer marketing to achieve their marketing goals.

I will never forget that spring when I met Mr. Dong, the teacher who changed my life.
When I first met him, Mr. Dong was in his studio, employing his brush with great skill. His great work, Poem in Clerical Script, left me in awe. The strong strokes (线条) and the square yet varied outline of Chinese characters all demonstrated his mastery.
“Would you like to learn ” Mr. Dong asked with a smile. I nodded excitedly. And so, I became his student. In the days that followed, Mr. Dong patiently taught me the techniques of painting and calligraphy. He emphasized the importance of integrating an ancient charm in our works, using bright colors and mastering the use of ink. Whenever I had questions, he always explained tirelessly.
I love painting plum blossoms (梅花) and have faithfully followed his brilliant style. For my painting entitled Lady smelling the plum blossoms, I have heeded his instructions to outline the flowers with light ink and draw the pistils (花蕊) with thick dark ink dots. The plum blossoms are arranged in alternating layers of denseness and thinness. I have drawn a lady wearing her hair in double knots under the flowers. She is picking up a branch to smell the sweet fragrance, with a smile playing around her eyes. I have also applied color to this lady, so that she stands out vividly in the blossoming branches of the dark plum trees.
As seasons passed, my skills improved steadily under Mr. Dong’s careful instructions. Every time I made a breakthrough in my work, I would think of his teachings. He not only passed on artistic skills but also taught me life lessons.
Now, whenever I pick up a brush to paint, I’m reminded of Mr. Dong’s earnest instructions. His teachings, both by word and by example, and his care like a strict father and kind teacher, are deeply carved in my heart. I know that this debt of gratitude to my teacher will accompany me throughout my life, inspiring me to continue advancing on my artistic journey.
4. To which art form does Poem in Clerical Script belong
A. Carving. B. Calligraphy. C. Painting. D. Literature.
5 What did Mr. Dong prioritize in his teaching
A. Modern style. B. Historical grace.
C. Abstract forms. D. Realistic details.
6. What can we infer about the painting of Lady smelling the plum blossoms
A. It is dominated by bright and vivid colors.
B. It features various ink shades with the lady in color.
C. The plum blossoms are mainly painted in a single layer.
D. The lady looks regretful without any facial expressions.
7. What is Mr. Dong like according to the last paragraph
A. Courageous. B. Stubborn. C. Devoted. D. Independent.

Scientists have developed an AI-powered modeling method that mimics (模仿) how birds produce songs, similar to how large language models like ChatGPT generate human sentences.
Both birds and humans arrange their vocal (声音的) expressions in structured ways. In human speech, words follow specific grammatical rules, while birds sing in organized syllabic (音节的) patterns. One key aspect of both birdsong and human language is context dependence. In English, for example, the phrase “flies like” can have different meanings depending on what follows. For instance, while “time flies like an arrow” is a statement about time, “fruit flies like bananas” is one about insects and food. If we mix these up — “time flies like bananas” — the meaning becomes nonsensical.
The research team analyzed previously recorded songs from six Bengalese birds, each of which sings 7 to 15 syllables per series. Their AI model mapped series of events by tracking what came next based on past occurrences. Imagine a flowchart where each syllable leads to a range of possible next syllables, with probabilities assigned to each shift. Using this approach, the team generated a range of possible models for each bird’s song, gradually refining (改进) them to ensure they only produced series that actually exist in the bird’s natural surroundings. The final models accurately reflected each bird’s real singing patterns while identifying which syllables were context-dependent.
The results showed that all six birds displayed context dependence in their songs, while the degree of it varied between individuals. It supports the idea that birds listen to themselves and adjust their vocal patterns based on what they hear, much like how humans refine speech and grammar while learning a language.
To explore this deeply, the researchers studied birds that could not hear their own songs. The results were striking. These birds showed a dramatic reduction in context-dependent syllables, suggesting that hearing feedback is crucial in shaping how birds refine their songs. So this study raises questions about how truly unique human language is if birds follow similar rules.
8. What feature do birdsong and human language have in common
A. Meaning depends on context.
B. Words follow grammar rules.
C. Both sound with syllable patterns.
D. Meaning changes based on prediction.
9. What is the research method of the team
A. Bird watching. B. Trend spotting.
C. Pattern modeling. D. Interview analysis.
10. What does the underlined “this” refer to in paragraph 5
A. Birds depend on context randomly.
B. Birds change their ideas like humans.
C. Birds listen to others’ songs to form theirs.
D. Birds refine vocal expressions like humans.
11. What is the best title of the passage
A. The Magic Patterns of Language
B. Insights into Birdsong Complexity
C. AI Unlocks Birdsong’s Contextual Secrets
D. AI Connections: Birds and Humans United

In 1785, English philosopher Jeremy Bentham designed a perfect castle where rooms circle a tower, from which an unseen guard can observe any people at will. People have to assume they’re constantly observed and behave accordingly. The secret of the castle control: the people have internalized the surveillance (监控) mechanism themselves. Bentham’s design feels so relevant in our digital age of algorithms (算法) and social media, when we frequently feel watched, with no way to escape.
How being watched affects us is the first topic that has been studied in psychology. Decades of studies have shown that we behave differently when we are watched. On a conscious level, we become more prosocial, meaning we’re more likely to give and less likely to cheat or litter. Even theft or littering could be reduced merely by posting pictures of eyes. Seymour, a psychologist from the University of Technology Sydney, puts this down to our concern with reputation and social consequences. This led to the idea that surveillance could be used for social good, echoing Bentham’s methods.
Being watched also affects cognitive (认知) functions, but negatively. One study found that participants performed worse on a working memory task with people looking at them — a direct gaze grabs participants’ attention and distracts them from a given task. A series of experiments have demonstrated that bringing more surveillance into workplaces or educational settings — usually an attempt to boost productivity — could actually be counterproductive.
Surveillance profoundly impacts our brain’s unconscious processing. Seymour says it makes our social thinking and survival instincts work too hard. This makes us worry about everyone’s mental health. Always being watched makes us more aware of people around us, keeping us on edge and ready to act. “We didn’t have as much surveillance and social connection 50 years ago, so it’s a new societal context we’re adapting to. We need to find ways to balance the benefits of connectivity with the drawbacks of constant surveillance,” Seymour remarks.
12. Why does the author mention the castle in the first paragraph
A. To explain a concept of psychology.
B. To express his respect to Bentham.
C. To illustrate its working mechanism.
D. To present a picture of surveillance.
13. What urges people to become more prosocial
A. Their desire to keep a good image. B. Their trust from the family.
C. Their attachment to the community. D. Their concern with education.
14. How might a student perform during a monitored online test
A. Ignoring the existence of the webcams.
B. Improving his thinking ability thoroughly.
C. Having a lower performance than expected.
D. Completing the test with fueled confidence.
15. What does Seymour suggest about the society full of surveillance
A. Cut interactions to ease stress.
B. Boost surveillance for connections.
C. Ignore the impact of surveillance.
D. Weigh connectivity against surveillance.

How Music Reshapes the Emotional Lens of Memory
Have you ever noticed how a particular song can bring back a flood of memories Maybe it’s the tune that was playing during your first dance or the melody of a memorable road trip. ____16____ However, recent research suggests that music may do more than just trigger (触发) memories — it might even change how you remember them.
In the research, scientists found that listening to music can change how you feel about what you remember. ____17____ The areas of your brain responsible for emotion and memory also become active. The hippocampus (海马体), which is essential for storing memories, works closely with the brain’s emotional center. This is why certain songs are deeply emotional.
Research noted that music played during recall might introduce new emotional elements into the original memory. Apparently, when positive music is played, the participants surveyed were more likely to combine new emotional elements with the story that matched the mood of the music. ____18____ Even when the music is no longer playing, musical memory remains.
Memories may be more flexible than previously thought and could be influenced by external auditory canal (外耳道) during recall. Such findings provide exciting implications for daily life and for medicine. ____19____ The music you listen to while going about your daily routines might be subtly shaping how you remember those experiences in the future. The same goes for medicine. ____20____ It opens a new path for exploring music-based interventions in treatments for mental health conditions.
The next time you put on a favorite playlist, consider how it might be coloring not just your current mood but also your future recollections as well.
A. Daily life applications are inviting.
B. When listening, more than your ears are engaged.
C. So cheerful music boosts memory in a bright perspective.
D. The reason why music can evoke emotions remains unknown.
E. It suffers when people find those memories fade away with time.
F. For people with depression, music works in a more positive light.
G. People often think of these musical memories as such fixed shots of the past.

So, what can runners do on race day Mark Carroll, a two-time Olympian, said, “Don’t let your watch take away from the ____33____ of the event.” Maybe if I can get prepared for another 26.2 miles, I’ll try a totally different approach: Forget my watch, ____34____ zigzagging to high-five the crowd, and just run for the sake of running. It was a burning August day. We’d been on the road for nearly three hours in our second-hand RV. I cradled my 9-year-old pet dog, Roscoe, in my lap as we inched through a little town, Pendleton, peering out for any sign of a place to grab a bite for lunch. After 15 minutes driving through, we found pretty slim pickings. The town seemed rather disappointing.
Phil and I, both retired, had dreamed of taking a road trip in a comfortable RV for a year. We’d spied the FOR SALE sign on this ancient RV with only 38,000 miles. The coming summer days found Phil and me working on the RV, redoing the interior (内饰), getting the engine checked, and most importantly mounting a brand-new fire extinguisher (灭火器). It felt great to work toward a goal and even have the support of my community, which wasn’t something I would readily find on the road.
On the outskirts of Pendleton, I spotted The Saddle — a small restaurant with a full parking lot. Phil parked nearby, and I took Roscoe inside. It was thoughtful with a cool room and water bowl for Roscoe. The dining room was cozy and inviting, and we enjoyed our meal.
Then we returned to our RV to start the next leg of our trip. Just as Phil started the engine, I found something smelling like smoke. Flames leaped out before we could reach for the fire extinguisher. “Get out!” Phil screamed. With smoke filling the RV, I grabbed Roscoe while Phil gathered our belongings, and we made our escape. From a safe distance, we called 911. When the fire truck arrived, the RV was already enveloped by flames.
I watched the ruined RV helplessly, heartbroken. This trip we’d dreamed about. All our renovation work. For years I’d depended on our friends in our community in times of trouble. Stuck in a small town full of strangers, where could we spend a night How would we get home Who could we ask for help

Dear Jack,
I’m writing to share with you an exciting activity I had last weekend. It was a school-organized event where we went into our community park to capture memorable moments on video.
My video focused on colorful butterflies in a small garden. I managed to record these delicate creatures as they flew from flower to flower. The close-up shots show their beautiful wing patterns and gentle movements. It took a lot of time and patience, but the end result was worth it.
This activity was not only fun but also educational. I learned about different butterfly species and their importance in nature. It made me appreciate the small wonders around us that we often ignore. The experience has inspired me to pay more attention to the environment and maybe start my own little garden at home.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Word of our needs seemed to spread fast. The local fire chief offered us a place to stay for the night, while a kind-hearted waitress from The Saddle brought us warm clothes and food. Strangers approached us with offers of help, their eyes filled with concern and sympathy. As the shock began to wear off, we felt a wave of gratitude wash over us. The town we had initially found disappointing was now revealing its true colors — a community of caring individuals ready to lend a hand in times of need.
A year later, Phil and I revisited Pendleton in a new RV on purpose. We wanted to thank those who had helped us in our darkest hour. As we drove through the familiar streets, memories of that fateful day came flooding back. But this time, instead of despair, we felt a sense of warmth and belonging. We stopped at The Saddle, now a symbol of hope and kindness. Our journey had taught us that home isn’t just a place, but a feeling of connection with others, no matter where you are.
