How to Politely Ask a Question
When you ask someone a question in English,it could be a little rude if you say something too directly. That's why we can use indirect questions when we make requests.Luckily, there are a lot of different phrases that help you sound more polite.
If you're asking a stranger or if you're not ready to talk to the person, try out one of these phrases to start your conversation and make others notice you.To sound even more polite, try leading with "Excuse me/Sorry to bother you,but.."and then ask your question.
Starting a question with"may"is a great choice for making your request sound more formal(正式的).Don't say directly what you need or want to do,but ask the other person if it's okay for you to do it.
Leading right away with a question word, like"who""what""why""where"or "how"might make your question sound rude or demanding.Ease into the question with one of these words like"can""could""would",and then it sounds a little more polite when you're asking for information.
Sometimes, you may ask a question that the other person doesn't know the answer to.To take some of the pressure to be correct off them, start your question with a phrase like,"do you remember"or "would you know",then they can easily say "yes"or "no"in response.
Using "if"or "whether"works best if the question doesn't have the words "who" "what""where""when"or "why".Begin your question with other phrases, like"do you" or "could you" before adding"if or "whether".
Saying "please"or "possibly"shows that you have good manners(礼仪),so don't forget to say it when you're requesting something. You can either add please to the start or the end of your question to make it sound more polite.
Start with "excuse me" or "pardon me" to get a person's(1) . Example 01: Where is the library?→ (5)
Begin a question with "may" (2) asking directly. Example 02: I want to have some food.→ (6)
Use "can","could",or "would" when you make a request. Example 03: Where is the bathroom?→ (7)
Use "know" or "remember" when(3) whether the person can answer. Example 04: What did he say last night? → (8)
(4) "could you" or "do you" before "if" or "whether" when asking a yes/no question. Example 05: Will she arrive on time? → (9)
Say "please" or "possibly" in your question. Example 06: Can you tell me when the meeting starts?→ (10)

Start with "excuse me" or "pardon me" to get a person's(1) attention . Example 01: Where is the library?→ (5) Excuse me,where is the library?
Begin a question with "may" (2) instead of asking directly. Example 02: I want to have some food.→ (6) May I have have some food?
Use "can","could",or "would" when you make a request. Example 03: Where is the bathroom?→ (7) Could you tell me where the bathroom is?
Use "know" or "remember" when(3) you are not sure whether the person can answer. Example 04: What did he say last night? → (8) Do you remember what he said last night?
(4) Begin with "could you" or "do you" before "if" or "whether" when asking a yes/no question. Example 05: Will she arrive on time? → (9) Do you know if she will arrive on time?
Say "please" or "possibly" in your question. Example 06: Can you tell me when the meeting starts?→ (10) Can you tell me when the meeting starts, please?
【考点】说明文;文化.

【分析】本文介绍了如何使对话更有礼貌的一些方法。
【解答】(1)细节理解题。根据第二段If you're asking a stranger or if you're not ready to talk to the person, try out one of these phrases to start your conversation and make others notice you.(如果你问陌生人或者你没有准备好问的人,用这些词组来开启你的对话以便别人注意到你。)可知此处指"注意",attention注意,名词,符合题意。故填attention。
(2)细节理解题。根据第三段Starting a question with"may"is a great choice for making your request sound more formal(正式的).Don't say directly what you need or want to do,but ask the other person if it's okay for you to do it.(用may开始问题是一个好选择因为这使你的要求更正式。不要直接说你需要什么或想要什么,但要问别人是否可以为你做这件事。)可知此处表示"代替,而不是"。故填instead of。
(3)细节理解题。根据倒数第三段Sometimes,you may ask a question that the other person doesn't know the answer to.(有时你可能问的问题别人不知道答案。)可知此处表示"不确定"。故填you are not sure。
(4)细节理解题。根据倒数第二段Begin your question with other phrases, like"do you" or "could you" before adding"if or "whether".(以其它词组开始,比如在"if or "whether"之前用"do you" or "could you"。)可知此处表示"以......开始"。故填Begin with。
(5)观点表达题。根据第二段To sound even more polite, try leading with "Excuse me/Sorry to bother you,but.."and then ask your question.(为了听起来更礼貌,用"Excuse me/Sorry to bother you,but.."开始对话然后问你的问题。)可知本句需用Excuse me以使问题更礼貌。故填Excuse me,where is the library?
(6)观点表达题。根据第三段Starting a question with"may"is a great choice for making your request sound more formal(正式的).Don't say directly what you need or want to do,but ask the other person if it's okay for you to do it.(用may开始问题是一个好选择因为这使你的要求更正式。不要直接说你需要什么或想要什么,但要问别人是否可以为你做这件事。)可知此处需用may提问更正式。故填May I have have some food?
(7)观点表达题。根据第四段Ease into the question with one of these words like"can""could""would",and then it sounds a little more polite when you're asking for information.(用这些词"can""could""would"来提问,这样比你直接问听起来更礼貌一点。)可知此处需用could提问表示委婉语气,后面宾语从句需用陈述句语序。故填Could you tell me where the bathroom is?
(8)观点表达题。根据倒数第三段To take some of the pressure to be correct off them, start your question with a phrase like,"do you remember"or "would you know",then they can easily say "yes"or "no"in response.(为了减少犯错的压力,你的问题用,"do you remember"or "would you know"这样的词组开始,然后他们很容易回答"yes"or "no"。)可知此处需用do you remember提问,后面宾语从句需用陈述句语序。故填Do you remember what he said last night?
(9)观点表达题。根据倒数第二段Begin your question with other phrases, like"do you" or "could you" before adding"if or "whether".(以其它词组开始,比如在"if or "whether"之前用"do you" or "could you"。)可知此处需用do you提问,后面宾语从句需用陈述句语序。故填Do you know if she will arrive on time?
(10)观点表达题。根据最后一段Saying "please"or "possibly"shows that you have good manners(礼仪),so don't forget to say it when you're requesting something.(用please和possibly来表达你良好的礼仪,当你提要求时不要忘记说。)可知此处需用please来表示礼貌。故填Can you tell me when the meeting starts, please?
【点评】主要考查学生的阅读理解能力及知识运用能力。答题时细节理解题可直接根据文中细节得出答案。
