When I was young, flowers filled my mom's garden each spring. I never thought that Mom had done much about them behind the scenes(在幕后), until she shared her secret with me.
One day last November, Mom and I spent a whole morning planting flower bulbs(球茎). I dropped one in each hole and covered it over with soil. My fingers were numb(麻木的) by the time we finished. However, the ground looked just as flower bulb empty and flat as it had been before. Then Mom told me to wait. I didn't only
wait—I watched. I watched hopefully all through the winter...
On the last day of April, I went outside to find the garden full of colorful flowers. Our hard work paid off. “My boy, tomorrow morning,” Mom said, “we will walk the neighborhood and leave a basket of flowers on
each doorstep.”
“What ” I almost cried. “Are we selling our flowers ”
“Of course not,” she said excitedly. “In fact, nobody will even know they' re from us. We' ll leave them at our neighbo rs' as a surprise. Doesn't that sound fun ”
“To me, it doesn't sound fun at all” I replied unwillingly. “They' re our flowers. We should keep them for ourselves!” “Flowers are like kindness,” Mom said. “Their beauty is meant to be shared.”
Early the next morning, Mom woke me up. We brought the baskets and stopped near the first house. I took one basket, set it by the doorstep and rang the bell. Then we quickly ran away, ducked behind the trees and waited.
Finally, the door opened. A man came out, looking surprised. He picked up the flower basket and then smiled. Mom h ugged me. I got a good feeling inside. Now I knew what she meant about beauty sharing. Icouldn't wait to get to the next ho use.
By the time we got home, I was grinning(咧着嘴笑) from ear to ear. The garden was empty, but my heart was full.

A medical breakthrough in China is giving new hope to people with spinal cord injuries (脊髓损伤).Scientists have cre ated a braIn-spinal chip(芯片) that allows paralyzed (瘫痪的) patients to move their legs, and even walk again.
The chip, only 1 mm wide, is designed to be fitted into the brain and spinal cord. If the natural communication between the brain and muscles(肌肉) is lost, this chip becomes the bridge. When the chips work, they create a direct connection betw een the brain and muscles.
The results have been amazing. A 34-year-old man, paralyzed after a fall, could move his legs just one day after the op eration on Jamuary 8,2025. Two weeks later, he walked five meters with help. Three other patients had similar operations in February and March, all getting better within weeks. Even though the patients’ nervous systems were damaged (受损), the chips helped them walk again. This marks a big step in China's progress in medical science and it brings hope for over 3.7 million people in China.
“This is just the beginning,” Jia, the lead researcher, says. “With the technology, these people may one day leave whee lchairs behind after 3 to 5 years of training.”
Behind this achievement is a long journey of careful research and bold thinking. It took the researchers over 10 years t o develop the chip. They tested it on animals first, and then on people. They faced many challenges, yet they never gave up. Step by step, they developed a system to reconnect the mind and body in ways once appearing only in science fiction.
As the chip continues to improve, it lights a new path forward —— one built on science, shaped by care, and aimed to ward a brighter future.
What do we know about the chips mentioned in the passage
They are only as wide as 2 mm. B They are fitted into the man's arms.
C. They help the patients walk again. D. They improve the patients' memory

Everyone knows that forests help fight climate change. However, a recent scientific report shows that the world lost 30 0,000 square kilometers of forests in 2024. That's an area about the size of Italy.
According to the report, for the first time ever, fires were the biggest cause of forest loss. ▲ . This country has t he largest area of rainforest in the world. Last year, it suffered from a long period of dry weather.Wildfires broke out and spr ead. As a result, about 25,000 square kilometers of the primary rainforest disappeared in the country. This meant fires cause d 66%o of its forest loss.
The second biggest cause of the world's forest loss was clearing land for farming. As people need more farmland, they keep cutting down forests every year. In 2024, the area of forest cleared for farming increased by14% worldwide. The situati on was more severe in developing countries. For example, Bolivia’ s forest loss doubled in 2024.
Without doubt, something must be done. Experts call on governments, businesses and people to work together before i t is too late. It seems that China has set a good example. Thanks to cooperation at many levels.China had the biggest increas e in forest area among all countries in 2024. That year alone, newly-planted trees inChina covered an area of nearly 45,000 s quare kilometers, according to a news report. If more countries start to take action like China, the earth will become a greene r planet.
The size of Italy is mentioned in Paragraph 1 to show .
why we need forests B. where a disaster spread
C. what climate change is D. how terrible forest loss was
Which of the following can be put in“ ▲ ” in Paragraph 2
Farming is a reason. B. Take Brazff for example.
C. Wildfires were stopped. D. Read the report carefully.
What does the underlined word“severe” in Paragraph 3 mean

What was the reason for the growth of China's forest area in 2024
A. Enough land. B. Nice weather. C. Good teamwork. D. Green technology.
What is the best title for the passage
A . Rainforest Became Larger B. Earmland Area Grew Rapidly
C. Forest Fires Caused Pollution D. Forest Loss Worried the World

Imagine a robot. What comes to your mind first A machine stronger than the human body However, this
same quality is now causing a big problem— it's creating tons of long-lasting e-waste that could flood our planet. What if, instead, the machines we use were designed to break down and disappear— just as living things do
For a study published in Science Advances, researchers made a robotic arm and a controller using materials from animals and plants. These materials are strong enough to work but can easily break down in a natural envir onment. After test ng, both parts were gone in soil within weeks.
Biodegradable(可生物降解的) robotics often falls under the umbrella of soft robotics, which takes ideas fro
m nature. “This field started in materials science and chemistry rather than traditional robots that come from mec hanical (机械的) engineering.” says Florian Hartmann, a materials seientist from Germany. However, many early soft robotics models still used man-made materials that cause pollution.
Wei, a scientist who studies natural materials in Hangzhou, worked together with his f rend Zhang, a robotic s engineer in Shanghai, to build robots for the new study. They started with cellulose (纤维素) taken from cotton. Then, they added glycerol(甘油) to make a new material that is soft and easy to change shapes. After that they al lowed it to dry so it became strong, “Cellulose is cheap and easy to work with,” says Wei. They found that the co ntroller and the robotic arm stood up to both heavy use and a week of inactivity. Finally, they buried(埋) them bo th in a hole. Within eight weeks these two parts were almost completely gone.
Wei and Zhang expect that robots like these can be used to deal with dangerous waste and then disappear na turally. They also hope that such robots can aid doctors in operations and then safely break down inside the body. However, it's important to note that the technology is still in very early stages. “If we truly want to have a bi odegradable robot,” Hartmann says, “we also need to make sure its electronics and power parts are biodegradable.

What is special about the robotic arni and the controller in Paragraph 2
A. They are green. B. They are hard. C. They are intelligent. D. They are affordable.
What is mentioned in Paragraph 5 about soft robots
A. How they work. B. Where they can be used. C. Their challenges. D. Their performance.
What can we learn from the passage
A Soft robots are widely used to clean up e-waste. Soft robots have to rest for a week after heavy use.
C. The designing of soft robots borrows ideas from nature.
D Mechanical engineering offers new ways to run soft robots.

When considering the kind of experience that makes life better, most people first think that happiness depen ds on experiencing pleasure: good food, good jobs, all the comforts that money can buy. If we couldn't have these, we might as well sit in front of the television on a quiet evening.
Pleasure is an important part of the quality of life, but by itself it doesn't bring happiness. When people think further about what makes a worthy life, they tend (倾向于) to move beyond pleasant memories and begin to rem ember other events, other experiences that overlap(有重叠) pleasurable ones but fall into a group with a separate name: enjoyment. Enjoyable events take place when people have not only satisfied a need or met some earlier ex pectation, but also achieved something unexpected,
Enjoyment is characterized by a sense of curiosity, of achievement. Playing a tennis game that improves one’ s ability is enjoyable, as is reading a book that shows things in a new light, as is having a conversation that leads us to express ideas we didn't know we had. None of these experiences may be especially pleasurable when they ar e taking place, but when we think back on them afterwards, we would say. “That really was fun” and wish they w ould happen again. After an enjoyable event we know that we have changed, and grown.
Experiences that give pleasure can also give enjoyment, but the two feelings are quite different. For example, everybody takes pieasure in eating. However, to enjoys food is more difficult — you have to pay
enough attention to a meal, so as to sense and tell its various tastes. As this example suggests, we can experience pleasure without any psychic energy, while enjoyment happens only as a result of full attention. A person can fecl pleasure without any effort, as long as certain parts in his brain are stimulated (刺激). But it's impossible to enjoy a tennis game or a book wi thout full attention. It's for this reason that pleasure does not last long, nor does it make us grow. Growth requires full attent ion to goals that are new, that are relatively challenging.
Without enjoyment, life will go on, and it can even be pleasant. But it depends heavily on luck and the external(外部
的) environment. To achieve personal control over the quality of experience, however, we need to learn how to build enjoy ment. into what happens day in, day out.
You will most probably experience enjoyment when you .
buy expensive shoes B order a delicious meal
C. talk with friends for new ideas D. sit quietly in front of a television
What do you know about pleasure and enjoyment from the passage
Enjoyment grows out of pleasure.
Pleasure and enjoyment come hand in hand.
Pleasurable experiences are part of enjoyable ones.
Some experiences provide both pleasure and enjoyment.
The words“psychic energy” in Paragraph 4 are closest in meaning to .
A. attention B. interest C. ability D. knowledge
The writer probably agrees that ;
A feeling pleasure stops people from achieving growth
B. feeling enjoyment comes with achieving growth
C. a. worthy life depends on luck and environment
D. pleasure is the key to a happy and worthy life

On Pingjiang Road in Suzhou, 65-year-old Ms Wu runs a traditional tea house for 30 years. She never expected 70 (one self) to become a tea master who helped build a cultural bridge.
It started in 2015 when a German tourist named Klaus walked into her shop. With the help of a phone app,Ms Wu 71 ( patient) showed him the way to properly brew(泡) Bilouchun, Suzhou's famous green tea.Klaus returned every day that week and 72 (bring) more friends each time.
Seeing how 73 (interest) they were in Chinese tea, Ms Wu started a weekly activity called“TeaCulture Saturdays”. She showed foreigners 74 to brew tea with traditional methods - - - - from choosing the water temperature to 75 (follo w) tea-making rules. Her daughter Lily, a college student, helped translate.
Soon, her tea house was always crowded with 76 (visit), including students and business people from many places. “I used to think foreigners wouldn't understand our tea culture, 77 they love it deeply. Some of them even treat their friends wi th Chinese tea at home,” Ms Wu said.
One of her favourite 78 (moment) was when Sarah, a Canadian, gave her a notebook filled with tea notes written in both English and Chinese. “This is why I keep teaching,” Ms Wu said, showing 79treasured notebook.
Now, her tea house appears in travel guides as“Suzhou’ s cultural líving room”. For tourists, every cup of tea served is a window on the tea culture of this ancient city.
