Poetry is one of the important art forms of literature, and is an easy way to express your feelings. Moreover, everyone understands it in their own way. Some find relief in poems; some read them simply for peace; some read poems for simple artistic pleasure.
There are some special features of poetry, which make it quite different from other forms of literature. First of all, poems have rhythmic patterns. Generally most parts of a poem follow the same form of rhythm. Poems may have rhyme, but they don't have to. The lines are neatly arranged together so that they express a particular feeling or emotion.
There can be various types of poems but according to the pattern or the form, there are mainly three types:
Lyrics: The lyric mainly concentrates on human thoughts and emotions rather than a story. Lyrics always bear song like appeal. These are mainly short poems. Popular lyric poem forms are the elegy, the ode and the sonnet. William Shakespeare,Edmund Waller and Keats are some of the greatest lyric writers of all times.
Narrative poems: This type of poetry tells a story. Narrative poems are usually long poems. Epics and ballads fall under this type. Some of the greatest epic poets are John Milton,Dante,Edgar Allan Poe,Alexander Pope,William Shakespeare, etc.
Dramatic poems: Any drama that is written in verse is a dramatic poem. These poems generally tell a story. Black verse, dramatic monologues and closet drama belong to this type. William Shakespeare,Christopher Marlowe and Ben Jonson are some of the greatest dramatic poets.
Whatever the form is,one thing, which cannot be denied,is that poetry is one of the most powerful tools to express our feelings.

Pablo Neruda was once referred to as the Picasso of poetry. Beloved by Chileans of all classes,he is one of the most widely read and respected poets in history.
Born with the name Neftali Ricardo Reyes Basoalto,he was a tall, shy and lonely boy. He loved to read and started to write poetry when he was ten. The American poet Walt Whitman, whose framed picture Neruda later kept on his table, became a major influence on his work.
However, his father did not like the idea of having a poet for a son and tried to discourage him from writing. To cover up the publication of his first poem,he took the pen name Pablo Neruda.
In 1924 Neruda gained fame with his most widely read work Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair. Yet his rich life experience made him go beyond the theme of love. His work also reflected the political struggle of the left and development of South America. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971.
Neruda loved the sea which he saw as creative, destructive and forever moving. He found inspiration in the power and freedom of the waves and the seabirds on the coast.“I need the sea because it teaches me,” he wrote.“I move in the university of the waves.” He loved how the sea forever renewed itself,a renewal echoed in his work.

C.Because he wanted to prevent his father knowing the publication.
D.Because he was greatly influenced by other poets.
7.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us
A.The sea gave Neruda vast writing inspiration.
B.The beautiful scenery along the coast.

When I was 16,my parents and I moved to a small town of Arizona.Since my parents were very busy at that time,my Aunt Julia often took care of me during their absence.
One rainy day, when Julia and I were heading toward home,I caught sight of an old lady wearing an orange jacket with a huge bag and a walking stick.Out of curiosity,I asked Julia,“Who is she? What is she doing with that huge bag?”
Julia caught a glimpse at her, then told me,“She is called Melinda. She has been collecting garbage with that huge garbage bag in the town for several years.Nobody knows why she's been doing it.Maybe just for fun.” Hearing her words,I couldn't help exclaiming,“Wow!It's so strange! Why does she find it funny to collect garbage?”
Since that day,I had come across her for many times on my way home. She always carried the huge garbage bag whether it was rainy or sunny.Gradually,I didn't find her strange for collecting garbage.Instead,I began to greet her with a smile.
Two years later,I was admitted to Chicago University. To my disappointment,I often saw trash on the lawn on campus.“Why should people litter everywhere?Who is responsible for the trash?” A few days later,it occurred to me that, since nobody took responsibility for it,why not collect trash myself? That way,I could walk past the lawn without feeling guilty.
Then,I took action.I always took a trash bag and collected trash on the lawn every time I walked past it.A few students also followed suit soon afterwards, keeping the school cleaner and prettier than before.
One day,an idea popped into my head when I finished collecting trash—maybe we could help make the city cleaner and prettier too!Despite the thought that collecting trash in front of so many people outside school was awkward,I knew it was the right thing to do.So I decided to give it a go.

Thoughts on a Tranquil Night is a masterpiece written by Li Bai. The poem vividly describes the poet's melancholy mood as he gazes at the bright moon on a tranquil night.
At the beginning, the imagery creates a serene and peaceful atmosphere, making the reader feel as if they were there with the poet, experiencing the beauty of the night. As the poem progresses, the poet reveals his inner turmoil, expressing his longing for his homeland and his sadness at being far away. This poem shows the poet's deep sense of nostalgia and homesickness, which is a common theme in Chinese poetry.
In my opinion, this poem is so beautiful and poignant that it is a timeless classic.

One day,I was collecting garbage outside the school. Some people gave me a strange look,as if I were mad.All of a sudden,I thought of the old woman who used to collect garbage many years ago.It occurred to me that I was acting just like her.As strange as that may seem, collecting garbage was meaningful for me.Little by little,a lot of people came to realize that I was doing voluntary service to keep the town clean, and I was complimented and thanked.
Then I realized that I should encourage more students to take part.Surprisingly, they agreed and we founded a voluntary group. We gave each student a bright orange jacket with the message“Let's Keep Our Town Cleaner!” We spent the time not just collecting trash, but also sorting it out and recycling it.The most wonderful thing was that all the people who were close to us were also doing their part!I said to myself,“This is what the old woman did for me.She has changed my life greatly.”

Featuring a rich variety of natural ingredients and special methods,Chinese cuisine stands out worldwide. However, many of us know little about it,let alone cooking. So we held a Chinese cuisine festival on campus yesterday. Different sorts of made to measure activities were intended for us,such as cooking lectures by famous local chefs,DIY cooking workshops, sale of home made Chinese cuisine. We learned, cooked and excitedly tasted and enjoyed the delicious food.

Adam cleared his throat and began to speak.“Mr.Brook,I'm here to make an apology. Yesterday afternoon my brother Bill damaged your car and ran away in panic. We are awfully sorry for that.”“Oh,I see. But it's no big deal,” Osman smiled. Then Adam drew out the money from his pocket and said to Osman with sincerity,“This is all the money I have. I wonder if it can pay for your loss.” However,Osman insisted that it was only minor damage and declined to take it.
Just then, there came a knock at the door. Osman went to answer it,only to find Bill standing outside.“Morning,Mr.Brook. I... I've come to say sorry for...” Bill stammered. But Osman laughed and let him in. The two brothers were both surprised and glad to see each other. Osman gave them a thumbs up and praised them happily,“Good boys,I truly appreciate your honesty. Just forget about my car.” Whatever the boys said,Osman wouldn't take the money. Finally,he accepted their suggestion that they make it up to him by doing some work in his garden.

Dear Eric,
Knowing that you can't decide between Chinese calligraphy and Chinese painting,I'm writing to give you my recommendation for which course to choose.
I highly recommend Chinese calligraphy, because it cultivates one's character and carries so much of China's profound history. The course, which combines theory and practice,is given by Mr. Li,a distinguished master. Actually I took the course last term and was impressed with his clear explanations and demonstrations. The course also includes workshops for calligraphy lovers to practice and communicate. Therefore, don't hesitate; seize the opportunity.
You're sure to have a rewarding voyage!
Yours,
Li Hua

Mrs.Collins encouraged her to compete for the reading award. With this kind teacher cheering her on,she gained
confidence and language skills. She made so rapid progress that by mid year, she was well on her way to speaking English fluently and had a good grasp of reading. Besides, she did well in all the other subjects. She came to school early every day, participated actively in class activities and finished homework on time. What's more, she made more and more friends in her class.
The award ceremony was coming up. She worked as hard as she could. When Mrs.Collins announced Gloria as the winner in front of the whole class,it was her proudest moment. She immediately took the reading award right out of that boy's hot little hands. The boy was shocked and unwillingly handed it to her. She felt so happy for herself, owing her success to her teacher,Mrs.Collins. This served as a motivation for Gloria who worked even harder in school and earned more“A” grades.
