My Favorite Singer
I know many singers, such as Li Guyi and Michael Jackson. But I like Michael Jackson best.
I recognized Michael Jackson on occasion. There was a poem recitation competition in my class. I had to look for a song about peace. Finally I found Heal the World, which was Michael Jackson's famous work. I liked it at once at the first sound of it and I thought it was the best song that I had ever heard.
Since then I began to know more about Michael Jackson and began to love him. He was named“King of Pop”.I love him, because he was not only a singer but also a peace loving person.

[参考范文]
I am walking along the streets. I find that there is only a“homeless” person today. The rainy day makes his situation more difficult. He just has a worn out tent which is leaking everywhere. I decide to do something for him. So I buy a new tent,a raincoat, and an umbrella to keep out the rain. He is very grateful and says,“Thanks, sir. I just lose contact with my family at present. I don't have much cash on me and my cell phone has run out.”
I decide to help the person in need. So I ask him for his family's phone number and call them. I also give him some money and a portable charger. He thinks I am the kindest person in the world for him. The sun comes out after the rain as usual. Then I walk, chat, and share my feelings about rain and my experiences on rainy days with him. When he is on his way home,he says he will help people in need as I do. I hope the kindness will be passed on.

“Their cheery song brightens many a winter's day. But robins are in danger of wearing themselves out by singing too much. Robins are singing all night—as well as during the day,” British based researchers say.
David Dominoni,of Glasgow University, said that light from street lamps, takeaway signs and homes is affecting the birds' biological clocks, leading to them being wide awake when they should be asleep.
Dr.Dominoni, who is putting cameras inside nesting boxes to track sleeping patterns, said lack of sleep could put the birds' health at risk. His study shows that when robins are exposed to light at night in the lab,it leads to some genes being active at the wrong time of day. And the more birds are exposed to light, the more active they are at night.
He told people at a conference,“There have been a couple of studies suggesting they are increasing their song output at night and during the day they are still singing. Singing is a costly behaviour and it takes energy. So by increasing their song output, there might be some costs of energy.”
And it is not just robins that are being kept awake by artificial light. Blackbirds and seagulls are also being more nocturnal. Dr.Dominoni said,“In Glasgow where I live, gulls are a serious problem. I have people coming to me saying ‘You are the bird expert. Can you help us kill these gulls?’ During the breeding(繁殖) season, between April and June, they are very active at night and very noisy and people can't sleep.”
Although Dr.Dominoni has only studied light pollution, other research concludes that robins living in noisy cities have started to sing at night to make themselves heard over loud noise.
However, some birds thrive(兴旺) in noisy environments. A study from California Polytechnic State University found more hummingbirds in areas with heavy industrial machinery. It is thought that they are capitalising on their predators(天敌) fleeing to quieter areas.

C.The dangerous environment.
D.The noise from heavy machinery.
5.What is the researchers' concern over the increase of birds' song output

Watching the behaviour and body language of zoo animals could be the key to understanding and improving their welfare, new research suggests.Traditionally, zoos have focused on more straightforward measures such as whether animals are eating and sleeping.
The new review,by the University of Exeter and the University of Winchester, says zoos have made great improvements in recent years, but closer observation of animal behaviour—a method called Qualitative Behavioural Assessment, developed in farming—could show even more about their state of mind.
An animal's positioning of its body, facial movements and activity levels are among the things that might tell whether it is excited, calm, interested, nervous, relaxed, etc.
“Zookeepers are knowledgeable about their animals, and they will often recognise an animal's state of mind by its behaviour and body language,” said Dr.Paul Rose,of the University of Exeter.
“What we are suggesting is a more scientific method of this, carried out over time.”
“Certain behaviours will show certain moods in an animal, and we should build our knowledge of this for different animals that live in zoos. For example, lions have a lot of facial expressions, and research on these expressions could help zoos understand the animals' state of mind. This information could then be used to improve welfare by changing diets, feeding times or any number of other aspects of the way animals are kept.”
Dr.Rose carries out much of his research at WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre, and is now examining how the swans (天鹅) there might show their state of mind through their behavioural expression.
“We're looking at how much time they spend exploring their habitat, which could show what they're feeling,” he said.“When they're unsure, they appear to move less and be more careful, and draw their feathers (羽毛) close to their bodies.”
The study provides research opportunities for Qualitative Behavioural Assessment and practices that could be used by zoos.“Animal welfare in zoos has improved greatly in the last 10 or 20 years, and this method gives zoos another way to recognise and improve the welfare of animals,” Dr.Rose said.
8.How to improve zoo animals' welfare
A.More focus on animals' eating and sleeping.
B.Closer observation of zoo animals' behaviour.
C.More attention to zoo animals' state of mind.
D.Adoption of more straightforward measures.
9.Why does the author mention lions
A.To show body language differs in different animals.
B.To show the uncertainty of animal body language.
C.To show lions change their expressions easily.
D.To show lions are treated badly in zoos.
10.What has Dr.Rose found about the swans
A.They have more facial expressions than lions.
B.They appear confident most of the time.
C.They move little in fearful situations.
D.They spend little time in their habitat.
11.What can we know from the last paragraph
A.Animal welfare in zoos is decreasing.
B.Qualitative Behavioural Assessment is meaningful.
C.Farm animals enjoy greater welfare than zoo animals.
D.Zoos do a good job in recognising animal body language.
D
Why Does Walking Through Doorways Make Us Forget
We've all done it. Run upstairs to get your keys, but forget that it is them you're looking for once you get to the bedroom. Open the fridge door and reach for the middle shelf only to realize that we can't remember why we opened the fridge in the first place.
We can understand those temporary moments of forgetfulness may be more than just an annoyance. Although these errors can be embarrassing, they are also common. It's known as the“Doorway Effect”,and it shows some important features of how our minds are organized. Understanding this might help us accept those temporary moments of forgetfulness as more than just an annoyance.
The Doorway Effect occurs when our attention moves between levels, and it reflects the trust in our memories—even memories for what we were about to do—on the environment we're in.
Imagine that we're going upstairs to get our keys and forget that it is the keys we came for as soon as we enter the bedroom. Psychologically, what has happened is that the plan (“Keys!”) has been forgotten even in the middle of carrying out a necessary part of the strategy (“Go to bedroom!”). Probably the plan itself is part of a larger plan (“Get ready to leave the house!”),which is part of plans on a wider and wider field (“Go to work!”“Keep my job!”“Be a productive and responsible citizen”,or whatever). Each field requires attention at some point. Somewhere in controlling the complex levels, the need for keys suddenly comes into mind.
Our memories, even for our goals, are planted in webs of connections. That can be the physical environment in which we form them, which is why revisiting our childhood home can bring back a flood of previously forgotten memories,or it can be the mental environment—the set of things we were just thinking about when that thing suddenly comes into mind.
The Doorway Effect occurs because we change both the physical and mental environments, moving to a different room and thinking about different things. That hurriedly thought up goal, which was probably only one plate among the many we're trying to spin(旋转),gets forgotten when the context changes.
12.What's the main purpose of the first paragraph
A.To present daily facts.
B.To introduce the topic.
C.To remind us of our weak memory.
D.To call attention to the danger of forgetfulness.
13.What does the writer think about those temporary moments of forgetfulness
A.They can be understood and accepted.
B.They are important features of our minds.
C.They show that our minds are out of order.
D.They are embarrassing and should be avoided.
14.Which of the following memories was formed in the physical environment
A.A toy helps you remember a childhood friend.
B.When you sing a song, you think of a former classmate.
C.You are playing basketball when you remember your homework.
D.While visiting your primary school, you recall a forgotten memory.
15.How is the passage mainly developed
A.By providing data.
B.By giving examples.
C.By making comparisons.
D.By listing study findings.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
After watering the trees and grass in our yard yesterday,I'm pleased to see that it is raining this morning. The trees and grass are dry and they are dying for the water. We really need some showers to give the yard a drink and bring freshness to the air and coolness, making the morning pleasant. There is nothing quite like a rainy day in spring and the simple joys it brings.
In fact,as a boy,I hated rainy days. They meant that I was stuck in the house and couldn't go out to play. It was only as the years passed that I realized there could be no water without rain and there could be no life without water. The truth is that rain is a gift from nature. Now I look at each gentle rainfall with a smile and know that nature is giving the world and us the water we need to live.
Of course,we all prefer the sunshine after the rain. The sun gives us light. It energizes us. The white clouds and blue skies just naturally make us feel good. When my thoughts are racing,my mum comes over.“Henry, your morning coffee. It's raining today. Why don't you sleep more?” I smile and say,“Mum,it is a nice day. After the rain, the plants in our yard will come alive again. But I have an important thing to do today.” She seems to understand and says,“Go ahead, baby. Have a good day!”
Maybe rainy days give us a chance to rest today, and even rest on the fields for the next day. I know there would be no morning coffee or afternoon tea without rain. I think when I go out to help others in the rain today,I will send thanks to nature. When the rain falls on my head,it brings me great fun,but it also causes trouble for some homeless people on the streets. On the other hand, the rain seems to make me a little sad. I decide to walk out and see if there is anyone in need.
