Royal Academy of Arts(RA), London
Not your standard gallery, the Royal Academy of Arts is led by artists to promote not just the appreciation of art, but its practice. Set in hundreds of acres of West Yorkshire parkland, you’ll see sculptures by some of the leading artists of the 20th century.
Whitworth, Manchester
After a sky-high f15 million development, the Whitworth is becoming one of the premier galleries in the north of England. 二、阅读单选(4题)(本大题共3小题,共36分)
[12分]My parents never once spoke of the stress of having to pay for college, but I knew enough to appreciate that it was there. Therefore, when my French teacher announced that she’d be leading an optional class trip to Paris for those who could come up with the money to do it, I didn’t intend to talk about the issue at home.
Yet one evening my parents sat me down, looking puzzled. My mom had learned about the France trip through my friend’s mom.
“Why didn’t you tell us ” she said. “Because it’s too much money.”
“That’s actually not for you to decide, Michelle,” my dad said gently.
“And how are we supposed to decide, if we don’t even know about it ”
I looked at them both, unsure of what to say. My mother glanced at me, her eyes soft. My father had changed out of his work uniform and into a clean white shirt. They were in their early forties then, married nearly twenty years. Neither one of them had ever traveled to Europe. They never took beach trips or went out for dinner. They didn’t own a house. We were their investment, me and my brother. Everything went into us.
A few months later, I boarded a flight to Paris with my teacher and a dozen or so of my classmates from Whitney Young. We would stay in a hostel and tour the Louvre and the Eiffel tower. We’d buy snacks from stands on the street and walk along the banks of the Seine. We’d speak French like a bunch of high school kids from Chicago, but we’d at least speak French. I remember all the details. I remember that as the plane pulled away from its gate that day, I looked out my window and back at the airport, knowing that my mother stood somewhere behind its black-glass windows, dressed in her winter coat and waving me on. This experience is like a diamond that can stand the test of time, being kept in my mind.

C.She wanted to go somewhere else. D.She didn’t want to participate in the trip.
6.(3分)What would “ I ” do in Paris
A.Practice French with local kids. B.Visit some French friends.
C.Visit some tourist attractions. D.Go to a party on the Seine.
7.(3分)Why does the writer describe the take-off of her flight
A.To show her deep impression of the experience.
B.To express her sadness of leaving her family.
C.To display her nervousness about the flight.
D.To show her eagerness for the trip.
[12分]B
By the middle of the last decade, I had been studying Indian Butterflies for over 20 years. However, I had never observed butterflies at high altitudes in the trans-Himalayan habitat. So, in 2015, I decided to visit Ladakh to search for butterflies.
My first "butterflying" visit to Ladakh was in June 2016, then in July of the same year, followed by another visit in August 2018. For these visits, I charted out a two-week schedule on each occasion. I covered some of the well-known locations.
Each habitat we explored had its unique mix of butterfly species. By trickling streams and wet areas, we found Small and Dusky Green Underwings, along with numerous Meadow blues, all part of the Blues family. In alpine meadows, countless white and yellow butterflies from the Yellows and Whites family fluttered about. More than once, I'd spot a white or yellow butterfly flying across the meadow, and chase after it, only to find myself out of breath in Ladakh's thin air while the butterfly gracefully flew away. Once, I chased a Butler's Dwarf butterfly for 15 minutes, managing only a few photos before it disappeared. Another time, I spotted dozens of Clouded Yellow butterflies in an alpine meadow. I spent half an hour chasing them, only for them to fly away each time.
Over the course of multiple visits to Ladakh for butterfly observation, I've had the remarkable opportunity to photograph more than 40 "lifers"—species I encountered for the very first time. These discoveries have added valuable knowledge to the field and led to the publication of two research papers in the "Journal of Threatened Taxa."
In addition to this, I partnered with the Snow Leopard Conservancy to create a small booklet showcasing 50 butterfly species found in Ladakh, with the goal of raising awareness and promoting butterfly watching as a unique and sustainable activity. This initiative aims to inspire both locals and tourists to explore the rich biodiversity of the region, while fostering a greater appreciation for Ladakh's delicate ecosystems.

10.(3分)What is the author's purpose of making a booklet
A.To document insect species in India.
B.To encourage eco-aware exploration.
C.To promote local tourism in Ladakh.
D.To compare butterfly research findings.
11.(3分)What is the best title for the text
A.Uniqueness of Butterflies
B.A Fascinating Journey

D.A Fluttering Discovery
[12分]Teaching is a caregiving profession. We all have that one teacher who inspired us to aim higher, choose a certain career path, or simply discover our passions. This role comes with not only many satisfactions, but lots of pressure to hold yourselves to a higher standard. The responsibilities of teachers only increased during the pandemic, so teachers had to show compassion for students and parents — often without expecting the same treatment. That’s why it’s so easy to think of teachers as selfless people that give it all for future generations.
However, where does that leave teachers Educators are taught to do many things, but their education is usually lacking in addressing the emotional problems of being a teacher. During the pandemic, I failed to make my online classes as enjoyable as possible for my students. Later, it turned out that other teachers were having problems as well. I had zero reasons to feel so isolated in my experience. What I needed was self-compassion. According to Dr. Kristin Neff, a lead researcher in this field, “Self-compassion is simply compassion directed inwards.” In other words, it’s about showing yourself the same care and understanding that you typically show students or other people in your life. Some people have more self-compassion than others, and working towards achieving more of it can help you in all aspects of your life.
Being a teacher comes with so many expectations and responsibilities. In theory, nobody’s perfect, but there’s great pressure to be a good role model, educator, mentor, etc. The inner critic has so much more “material” to work with when you’re in front of a class. It’s no wonder that in stressful situations, it’s harder to control your self-talk. For example, if you fail to upload a lesson on time, your inner critic will jump at the chance to say, “You’re so forgetful, and I can’t believe you did this.”
It’s no secret that teachers are usually under a lot of stress. A part of the solution can be incorporating self-compassion into teaching, which can not only enhance a satisfactory job but also have a good effect on students.
12.(3分)What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.Teachers’ dedicating themselves to the cause of teaching.
B.Teachers’ showing great compassion for themselves.
C.Teachers’ suffering from unknown mental pressure.
D.Teachers’ failing to learn something in their careers.
13.(3分)Which of the following fits with Dr. Kristin Neff’s view on self-compassion
A.Self-compassion is hard for teachers to learn.
B.Self-compassion helps teachers understand students well.
C.The more self-compassion you have, the more benefits you’ll get.
D.The more you understand others, the more self-compassion you’ll have.
14.(3分)What can be inferred from the example given in paragraph 3
A.Teachers’ responsibilities matter. B.Teachers have a lot of work pressure.
C.Teachers play a big role in students’ life. D.It’s normal for teachers to do wrong things.
15.(3分)What is mainly talked about in the text
A.The importance of teachers’ self-compassion.
B.The suggestions on raising future generations.
C.The necessity of reducing the burden on teachers.
D.The approaches to teachers’ growth and development.

“Mom, can I get this dress for prom(舞会) It’s perfect!” Liza asked. Her mother looked at the price and shook her head. “Liza, that’s expensive. We shouldn’t spend that much on a dress you’ll wear once. Besides, someone has a surprise for you today.”
“A surprise What kind of surprise ” Liza asked. Her mother smiled mysteriously and said, “Just be patient.” After a while, there was a knock on the door. Liza’s grandmother, Pam, entered the house, holding a package wrapped neatly in gift paper.
Liza’s curiosity got the better of her, and she eagerly tore open the package. Inside was a beautiful dress. But Liza’s excitement faded quickly as she realized it wasn’t the designer dress she had dreamed of.
“I’m not wearing this!” she shouted, her disappointment turning into anger. She didn’t consider how hurtful her words might be to her grandmother. Her mother tried to reassure her. “Well, dear, I think you will look beautiful in this dress,” she said.
“No! Are you trying to save money on me! Prom only happens once in a lifetime! I’m not wearing this!” Liza shouted, tears of anger welling up in her eyes.
Finally, her mother decided to give in. Pam quietly accepted Liza’s choice and carefully packed the dress she had made. She didn’t say much, but her disappointment was clear. Liza was too wrapped up in her own feelings to notice the sadness in her grandmother’s eyes.
The evening of the prom finally arrived. Liza danced among her friends, her heart filled with excitement. Suddenly, one of Liza’s friends Mary carelessly poured a glass of red wine on her dress. The saying I am recommending is “Well begun is half done”. The old saying stresses the importance of the first step when we set out to do something. It means that once we have begun a project well, we are more likely to make a success of it later.
I think there is a lot of truth in the saying. When we carry out a plan and strive to do something big, we must try ou best to succeed at the very beginning, because a good beginning will give us confidence and will lead to sucecess in thend. Don’t you agree with me

七、读后续写
47.【答案】
Liza headed to the school exit and called her mother, crying uncontrollably. Soon her mother arrived at the school and gave her the package Pam had left for her. “Your grandmother left this for you, just in case,” her mother said gently. Liza’s tears slowed as she opened the package. Inside was the dress Pam had made, the one she had rejected so harshly. She smiled through her tears, feeling a wave of gratitude. “Grandma always thought of every possibility. It seems that she has saved me this time,” she said. Liza took the dress and went to the restroom to get changed.
Returning to the hall in her grandmother’s dress, Liza felt a mix of nervousness and hope. As she stepped inside, the room fell silent for a moment. Everyone turned to look at her, their eyes widening in surprise. “Wow, Liza, where did you get that dress ” Mary exclaimed. “It’s beautiful!” another classmate added. Liza’s heart swelled with pride and joy as boys and girls praised her dress. “My grandmother made it for me,” she said proudly. After the prom, Liza couldn’t wait to see her grandmother to apologize and thank her for everything.
