Professional Learning Workshop: Climate Communications
July 31, 2025 — September 11, 2025
6:00 PM — 8:00 PM
New York, America
There is no question that better climate communications have become a priority (优先事项) across fields as the impacts of climate change continue to change daily lives for individuals, communities, and organizations. Whether it is exploring more ways to communicate science, managing difficult conversations resulting from different opinions, or connecting better with individuals and groups in a changing world, at the center of climate communication is the combination (结合) of science and the human behavior. This workshop invites people to explore ways to apply research findings across psychology, adult learning theory, cognitive science, and social neuroscience to improve climate change communications to drive change in their own field.
This workshop is designed for those who are tasked with communicating information about climate change in a range of settings, from workplaces, classrooms, to everyday encounters. Every occasion and audience are special, and for that reason, this workshop will focus on working with those professionals to design climate communications and activities specific to their work, research, or teaching environment. The workshop will include presentations, guest lectures from the field, and applied practice. Those who take part in it will also create a workable project that will allow them to find localized solutions and communication strategies for the community/ setting of their choice with judgement from experts from Columbia Climate School.
Workshop Fees: $2,000 for the 16-hour workshop

My eyes surveyed the endless Mongolian grasslands in front of me, and then looked back at the yurt — the traditional, round, white tent that I would be sharing with my Mongolian host family. I wondered how they survived in this distant location, hundreds of miles from anyone else, and without power or running water.
I entered the family tent, where a shy gentleman and his wife greeted me with bright smiles and then introduced to me their little daughter, whom I would be caring for during the next two weeks, while they went sheep shearing (剪羊毛) and tended to the horses.
I handed over the fresh fruit and sweets that I was told would be welcome gifts. While fruit was a rare treat — something the family might enjoy only once a year — the couple immediately started cutting it to share with me.
As I sat there, admiring the inside of the tent, I couldn’t help but be surprised by the emptiness of the space.
Western-type beds formed a circle around the outer walls of the tent, accompanied by a worn dresser and a small wood-burning stove that sent smoke out through an opening in the roof. The only other items that could be found in the yurt were a couple of wood chairs set beside a worn dining table, a few pieces of clothing, and a couple of bags of flour. Grass served as the home’s natural carpet, and there was no refrigerator, lamp, television, or anything electronic.
My hosts caught me scanning (扫视) the room and explained what they had served them well. Asked how they managed without water, they explained they got all they needed from the milk of their animals and that they occasionally collected water from winter snowfalls.
That night, as I lay under my warm covers, staring up at the brilliant nighttime sky through the opening in the roof, I realized that my host family did have everything they needed.
24. Why did the author go to stay with the family
A. To learn how to shear sheep. B. To experience living in a yurt for fun.
C. To do a survey on the local way of life. D. To look after their little daughter for a period.
25. What does paragraph 5 focus on
A. The simple and basic things inside the yurt.
B. The way the family kept warm in the cold weather.
C. The daily activities of the Mongolian family in the yurt.
D. The reasons why the family was short of modern equipment.
26. What can be inferred about the family
A. They kept a positive attitude towards life. B. They depended on snow water for daily life.
C. They were in terrible need of basic necessities. D. They were at a loss how to get along with others.
27. How did the author probably feel that night
A. Honored. B. Content. C. Anxious. D. Bored.

In Milam County, Texas, SB Energy manages the fifth largest solar (太阳能的) project in the country. It can produce 900 megawatts of power across an area of 1,618 hectares. So, how does the company deal with all the grass that grows on such a large piece of land It uses about 3,000 sheep. Sheep, unlike big machines, can fit between small spaces and work in all kinds of weather conditions.
The work of the sheep, and sometimes other animals, is called solar grazing. It is considered part of the larger idea of agrivoltaics — the use of land for both energy production and agriculture.
Solar grazing may help the environment in several ways. These include making grassy areas safer for wild animals like nesting ground birds and reducing oil use. Introducing the animals to work on solar fields also provides some help to the sheep and wool market, which has been in a pickle in recent years. The number of sheep in Texas fell to 655,000 in January 2024, a 4 percent drop from the year before. Because solar fields use sunny, flat land that is often good for animals to eat grass on, the power plants have been used in cooperation (合作) with farmers rather than against them.
Sheep farmer Howard accidentally found himself in the middle of Texas’ move to clean energy. In 2021, Howard began working with solar farms. His sheep ate the grass on these large areas of land. What was once a small business has turned into a larger one with more than 8,000 sheep and 26 workers. “Just the growth has been kind of crazy for us,” said Howard, who named his company Texas Solar Sheep. “It’s been great.”
“But there is a lot still unknown about the full effects of solar grazing,” said Nuria Gomez-Casanovas of Texas A&M University. “Not enough studies have been done to know the long-term environmental effects, such as how good the soil will be for future agriculture. We really have more questions than answers.”
28. Why does SB Energy use sheep in the solar project
A. Sheep have better adaptability. B. Sheep are cheaper than big machines.
C. The company wants to protect the land. D. The company desires to get sheep farmers’ support.
29. What does the underlined part “in a pickle” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Growing. B. Struggling. C. Recovering. D. Reacting.
30. Why is Howard mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To explain how farmers manage many sheep well.
B. To prove solar projects in Texas need many workers.
C. To describe the process of starting a sheep farm in Texas.
D. To show solar grazing is of great benefit to sheep farmers.
31. What is Gomez-Casanovas’ attitude towards solar grazing
A. Supportive. B. Unclear. C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring.
D
To help address the elder care challenge, a team of MIT engineers is looking to robots. They have built and tested the Elderly Bodily Assistance Robot, or E-BAR, a mobile robot designed to physically support the elderly and prevent them from falling as they move around their homes.
E-BAR acts as a set of robotic handlebars (把手) that follows a person from behind. A user can walk independently or lean on the robot’s arms for support. The robot can support the person’s full weight, lifting them from sitting to standing and the other way round. And the arms of the robot can support them by rapidly inflating (充气) side airbags if they begin to fall.
With their design, the researchers hope to prevent falls, which today are the leading cause of injury in adults who are 65 and older.
“Many older adults don’t realize the risk of falls and refuse to use walking sticks, which are inconvenient, while others overestimate (高估) the risk and may not do exercise, leading to poor mobility,” says Harry Asada, the Ford Professor of Engineering at MIT. “Our aim is to provide older adults having the balance problem with robotic handlebars for holding their body. The handlebars can go anywhere and provide support anytime, whenever they need it,” Asada says. “Elder care conditions can change every few weeks or months. We’d like to provide continuous support as a person’s disability or mobility changes with age.”
At present, the robot is run by remote control. In the future, the team plans to improve the robot’s functionality, allowing it to autonomously (自动地) follow and physically help a user.
“I think elder care is the next great challenge,” says E-BAR designer Roberto Bolli. “All the data points to a shortage of caregivers, a sharp increase in elderly population, and a strong desire for elderly people to age in place. We see it not only as an unexplored field in America, but also a naturally interesting challenge for robots.”
32. How does E-BAR respond if a user begins to fall
A. It calls a caregiver. B. It sounds an alarm.
C. It blows up the airbags. D. It reaches out the handlebars.
33. What’s one feature of E-BAR Asada stresses
A. The affordable price. B. The flexible material.
C. The novel appearance. D. The general applicability.
34. What message does Roberto Bolli deliver in the last paragraph
A. The healthcare system needs to be improved. B. Social developments change with the times.
C. There will possibly be a huge market for E-BAR. D. More research is required to invent robots like E-BAR.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. The Role of Robots in Future Life. B. A Robotic Solution for Elderly Support.
C. Ways to Improve Elderly People’s Mobility. D. The Challenges of Elder Care in Modern Society.

When Bill Leroy first heard about the Savannah Basketball Team, he had no idea that he was about to step into a dream he didn’t even know he had. At that time, he was just a second-grade student at the University of North Georgia, spending his summers like many others — cutting grass in his hometown and saving some money for his university.
That summer, his coach mentioned an unusual basketball team in Savannah that needed an extra player for a week. His coach told him, “We have a short-term contract (合同) and you will stay there for a week.” Bill’s mind was filled with a mix of curiosity and hesitation. On the long drive down to Savannah, his doubts started to grow. The people from the team called him and said, “Hey man, we’ve got some guys showing up early, earlier than expected… we don’t know how long we’ll actually need you, and you’ll probably only be around for the first couple of days.” Then Bill realized he was an extra player before the “real” players arrived.
Bill could have easily said no and turned the car around. But something inside him inspired him to continue. He took a deep breath and decided to stay. Little did he know that this decision would change the course of his life.
When he finally got to Savannah, he quickly realized this wasn’t a common basketball team. As he entered the stadium (运动场), he was greeted with a scene full of energy. There were people dancing in the stands, and crazy, entertaining videos were being played on the big screen. The atmosphere was full of excitement.
“Since you’re here, you might as well enjoy it,” he said to himself, trying to convince (说服) himself. So he did. He joined in the dancing during breaks, getting along well with the other players and the staff. Bill fully took this unexpected opportunity that presented itself to him. Although he had a good time, he didn’t give up improving his basketball skills.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
To prepare for games, Bill secretly worked to sharpen his basketball skills.

【答案】One possible version:
Dear Peter,
I’m Li Hua, writing to express my preference for the topic “Is arts education necessary ”.
In my view, this topic is more meaningful for us students. First, arts education has long been a hot issue in school education, and we all have personal experiences to share, which can make the debate more lively. Second, it can help us better understand the role of arts in our growth to have a debate on it — whether it’s developing creativity or enriching our lives. At last, compared with the one related to homework, arts education has something more to do with our overall development, and I believe the debate will inspire deeper thinking.
Thanks for your consideration.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
To prepare for games, Bill secretly worked to sharpen his basketball skills. He trained himself strictly as he didn’t want to miss any precious chance. Getting up early in the morning, he’d practice shooting the basketball in the empty stadium. After shooting, he’d stay there for hours, training himself until his arms felt like lead. He even created personalized practice schedules to raise his speed and accuracy. He also organized a practice game with his new friends, using it as a chance to test the new training results and teamwork.
Soon, he was called to play in an important basketball game. As soon as the game started, he went all out in the game. He was the best-performing athlete on the court. He moved swiftly, stealing the ball, making perfect passes, and shooting several three-pointers. His extraordinary performance lit up the stadium. After the game, the coach spoke highly of him, saying, “You’re exactly the person we need!” Impressed by his talent and perseverance, the team offered him a long-term contract. That summer in Savannah taught Bill more than basketball — it taught him that success truly belongs to those who are always prepared.
