I was born in a small village. When I was in primary school, having music classes at school was already a special thing. There was only one music teacher in the whole school, and we had one music class every week. He always came with an erhu (a traditional Chinese twostringed instrument). As soon as the clear sound of the erhu started, our class began.
We had no microphones or pianos—only music textbooks and a few willow twig whistles. But I still remember this simple classroom clearly. The music teacher often praised my singing and even asked me to stand up and sing first. For a primary school student, this recognition was more precious than any certificate.
Because of his encouragement, I sang in front of my classmates again and again. Gradually, I was no longer afraid of being watched. When singing, I would straighten my back and raise my voice. Later, when I entered middle school, I also dared to take the initiative to answer questions in class. Looking back now, part of my selfconfidence grew slowly in that simple rural classroom.
When I was in college, my grandma suddenly asked me, "Why haven't I heard you sing since senior high school " I smiled and didn't answer—I already knew I was tonedeaf. Although my clear singing voice has long been gone, the seed of selfconfidence that the teacher gave me in my early years has already grown lush and green in my heart.
With Teachers' Day coming, I want to say "thank you" to my music teacher and all teachers who stick to the teaching posts in rural areas: Thank you for taking away children's shyness with simplicity and sincerity in ordinary classrooms, and leaving courage and confidence for them.
