In Camp Tuhsmeheta (short for touch, smell, hear and taste), Jerusalem Crawley, a blind boy, met Donna Posont in her class about birding. “I was immediately attracted and wanted to learn more,” said Crawley.
Posont, who is blind, introduced Crawley and other blind summer campers to the sounds of different birds. “Blindness doesn’t need to limit anyone—you can learn about nature and identify trees, plants and birds using the other senses,” said Posont, 67, who has started to watch birds monthly since 2009, with the goal of teaching blind people to explore nature independently.
Posont grew up in a small town and she dreamed of studying biology in college. However, she couldn’t find a school with the proper equipment to teach a blind person. Instead, she earned a degree in social work, but still hoped to study biology. Luckily years later computers and high technology equipped schools to accept blind students. So in 2008, Posont returned to college and studied the subjects she’d missed in her younger years. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 2015 with a degree in environmental studies and a minor (辅修) in biology.
During summer breaks at the University of Michigan, she started passing along what she’d learned about birds and plants through touch, sound and smell to children at Camp Tuhsmeheta. “You miss a lot in a sighted world if you learn by depending on healthy people,” said Posont.
With bird populations dropping at an alarming rate due to habitat loss, pollution and climate change, Posont said it’s more important than ever to hand down what she’s learned. “You can use your other senses to learn why birds and nature are important and how they all work together,” she said. “The world is designed for sighted people, but nature is a place where it’s okay to be blind. To me, that’s the beauty of it.”
( )24.Why did Posont teach in the camp
A.To promote bird watching.
B.To help the blind explore nature.
C.To attract more people to the camp.
D.To inspire children to be dependent.
( )25.What did Posont want to learn most
A.Social work. B.Environment.
C.Biology. D.Education.
( )26.Which of the following can best describe Posont
A.Strict and adventurous.
B.Attractive and patient.
C.Curious and thoughtful.
D.Determined and helpful.
( )27.What does the underlined word “it” in the last sentence refer to
A.The world. B.Nature.
C.Being blind. D.Birding.

This past summer, a turtle (海龟) was freed after making an unexpected nearly one-year-long recovery fighting. Solaria had been hit and completely pressed by a running car in Montauk, suffering several fractures (骨折), and was rescued and named by the Turtle Rescue of the Hamptons.
The Turtle Rescue of the Hamptons is a turtle recovery centre located on the North Fork of Long Island. When Solaria was first sent to the centre, it was Dr Turetski who gave him some first aid. “Dr Turetski majors in emergency aid when the animal cannot be immediately taken to a wildlife centre,” Jennifer Faga, a local wildlife rescuer, said. “He has his own practice and works on animals in serious situations like this one.”
After being treated by Dr Turetski for a short period of time, Solaria was sent to the Turtle Rescue of the Hamptons, and recovered with the rescue for almost a year until this summer, when she finished her recovery and was successfully freed.
“It’s really important to take care of these guys because they take care of our ecosystems,” said Testa, director of the centre. “Turtles are both a marker and a key species.” Being the former means that turtles are affected by the chemicals left on the ground, while being the latter means that the ecosystem around such species is dependent on it. Turtles spread seeds, fertilize the ground, which makes the earth more productive, clean the water, and preserve health around their ecosystem.
“Turtles can live for 40—60 years, yet on Long Island, turtles are in danger. Like Solaria, they are often hit by cars, so many of their lives are cut short,” Testa said. “To help stop situations like Solaria’s from happening again, if you see a turtle crossing the road, pick it up and place him away from the road whenever possible.”
( )28.What happened to Solaria
A.It was hit by a truck.
B.It was injured seriously.
C.It was named by its owner.
D.It took him over a year to recover.

With an AI tool, researchers study penguin photos taken by tourists and scientists to track Adélie penguins in Antarctica. “Right now, everyone has a camera in their pocket, and the number of photos we could collect for studying will be out of our expectation,” says Thomas Brown, a scientist from an international research team.
With guidance from an expert, the AI tool is able to get a handle on and draw out the penguin groups in pared with humans, the AI finds and marks Adélie penguins in these photos more quickly, taking only 5 to 10 seconds per image.
The team created a 3D map of the Antarctica to know exactly where the photos were taken. By identifying the details in the tourist pictures, the researchers could place the photographer and the habitats of the Adélie penguin groups within the 3D map to get a bird’s eye view. This allows researchers to track how Adélie penguin groups change in location and population size over time. Such tracking is important because it can tell the climate changes. That is what researchers want to know. Similarly, the AI tool can also use historical photos to track natural signs such as glacier (冰川) changes that develop very slowly and may only be obvious by looking across many years.
Opinions about AI tools are different among researchers. Some worry that using tourist photos for research may encourage more people to visit Antarctica, which might lead to more tourist activities and could destroy the ecosystem in the end. However, for Thomas, he believes studying tourist photos with the AI tool could be useful, especially as many penguin groups have not been noticed by the research community. “Since Antarctica is hard to study twenty-four-seven,” says Thomas, “this method is helpful for keeping an eye on penguin groups that might only get studied once in a while.”
( )32.Why do the research team use an AI tool in their study
A.To collect the photos from tourists.
B.To follow moving paths of penguins.
C.To study the photos taken by tourists.
D.To identify the 3D map of Antarctica.
( )33.Which of the following can replace the underlined words “get a handle on” in Paragraph 2

A.Identify. B.Ignore. C.Explore. D.Revise.
( )34.What do researchers want to know by tracking Adélie penguins
A.Glacier sizes. B.Location marks.
C.Climate changes. D.Penguin numbers.
( )35.What is the text mainly about
A.3D map helps locate penguin groups.
B.Adélie penguins help develop AI tools.
C.Penguins show signs of climate change.
D.Researchers use AI to track penguin groups.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One morning, my family and I woke up and went to eat breakfast—until we heard barking and scratching at the door. When my mum opened the door, we saw a puppy(小狗). We looked around to see if we saw its owner, but there was no one. We took it inside and fed it.
Regardless of how badly I wanted to keep the puppy, we decided to look for the owner. We looked all day, but we failed. We talked about whether we should keep looking or look the next day. We all agreed to look for its owner the next day.
So, the next day my family and I looked for the dog’s owner. It was so hard looking for its owner. We were looking for flyers(传单)that involved the puppy, but no luck. We wouldn’t have quit because it’s a puppy.
“We won’t stop looking,” my mum and dad said. We were going to take care of the puppy until we found its owner.
When we woke up in the morning, we went to a pet shop to buy the puppy some dog food. After that we went back home to feed the puppy the dog food that we had just bought. After we fed the puppy, we gave it a nice bath. It was so dirty that the fur was black and sticky, but after we gave it a bath, it turned white. And I noticed there was a collar (狗项圈)on him, which said “Coby”. After we gave him a bath, we went to look for the puppy’s owner, but my mum stayed at home, and it was only my dad and me this time.
We continued looking until we found flyers. We looked at it. It said,“Lost Dog: Please Help If Found.” Then we looked at the picture;it looked exactly like Coby. We were all happy we found a flyer that was for Cody.

M: It sure does. Oh, it looks like Mr Brown is here. I’ll talk to you after class.
Text 10
W: Today we are visiting Woodhill Shelter—the most unusual animal shelter in Britain. It does not house wild animals rescued from zoos or sea creatures from ocean parks. What it does have is a lot of lucky and happy cows, pigs, goats, sheep and chickens rescued from becoming your lunch by animal rights groups.
The shelter was set up by Jill and Ben Smith. Neither of them eats animal products, but lives instead on a plant-based diet. They say it is a kinder and better way to live. The shelter wasn’t much visited until three years after it was built, and now it has large numbers of followers.
All the farm workers are volunteers without pay, but get free lunch and coffee in return for their work. If you want more information about the farm, you can phone 6978325. And if you want to become a volunteer, you must visit the website and fill in the online form. Posts are not accepted because letters are easy to lose.

One possible version:
There was a phone number on the flyer. My dad called it and someone answered; it was a lady. My dad asked whether she was the one who gave out the flyers. She said “Yes!” with excitement and told us Coby, who was very dear to her, had been gone days before. Then we told her that we had her puppy and that we would take him to her. She told us her address at once; then we went to it.
We found the lady’s house, and then we knocked on the door. A lady opened the door, and when she saw the puppy, she screamed with joy. We handed her the puppy, feeling proud. She wanted to give us a reward for taking care of her puppy for her, but we said it was OK because we were really happy to help. So we went home tired but content, and told my mum the whole thing. My family became friends with the lady, and we were all happy.
