Text 1
M: I’m meeting a group of volunteers who plan to clean up the park today. Would you like to join us
W: I’d like to, but I have to prepare for the coming finals at home.
Text 2
W: Shall we have some tea or coffee
M: I think a glass of cold water would be better. There is nothing like it when the weather is so hot.
Text 3
M: Lisa, I heard you need an English-French dictionary. Shall we go to the bookstore this afternoon
W: Sorry, Mark, but my cousin has told me she’d give me her used one. So I’m going to meet her in a cafe to get it.
Text 4
M: Let’s go to play rugby.
W: I think it’s still raining now.
M: No, it has stopped. But we won’t be able to see sunshine in a short period.
Text 5
M: How much are the toys
W: We are having a sale today. The original price is 10 dollars each, but now it only costs half the price.
M: All right, I’ll take three.
Text 6
M: Would you like to go out for dinner tonight
W: I’d love to. What time
M: Would 7:30 be OK Or 7:00 if you want to go earlier.
W: No, 7:30 is fine. I finish work at 5:00.
M: Shall I pick you up from your house
W: It’s hard to find a parking space near where I live. Could I meet you at the restaurant
M: Yes, that’s fine. Well, there’s an Italian place in town, or would you prefer Indian or Thai
W: Italian sounds fine.
Text 7
M: Are you doing work this late at night again It’s almost 2:00 am. Your eyes need some rest, dear.
W: No, I was reading a book online, but now I’m just checking out the news. Did you hear that Amanda was found in the forest
M: Who is Amanda
W: She’s a young woman who lives in Hawaii. She went hiking through a forest four days ago and never came back home. Hundreds of people had been searching for her.
M: Maybe she ran away.
W: No, that wasn’t the reason.
M: Maybe she got lost.
W: Not likely, since she knew the paths well.
M: So, have they found her
W: Yes, they just found her today. She had fallen by a waterfall. Her leg was broken, so she couldn’t climb back up to get help.
Text 8
M: Thanks for being our guest today on 94.1 FM.
W: You’re welcome. Thank you for having me on your show.
M: It’s our pleasure. So, Ms Allen, tell us a little bit about your programme.
W: Sure. I started this volunteer programme three years ago. I was working at a centre for the elderly. I noticed that a lot of them seemed to be very lonely.
M: Yes. That’s a big problem in many cities.
W: At the time, my husband was a teacher. He recognized that many students were having trouble at school. They needed help with their homework, but their parents were working and didn’t have time to help them.
M: So, you decided to create a programme that would connect old people with students in need of tutoring.
W: Yes. I knew there was a need for such a programme. Last year, we had 200 volunteer tutors. Together, they did more than 12,000 hours of tutoring.
Text 9
M: Have you ever been to this concert hall before
W: No, this is my first time.
M: The sound is amazing. They designed it, so you have a great audio experience no matter where you sit.
W: Usually I only see live music at clubs.
M: I used to go to big concerts at the sports centre, but it’s just too big, and the sound doesn’t travel well.
W: I agree. I think people go to them mainly for the comfortable environment.
M: True. It can be electric, but it would take a lot of effort to get to.
W: How did you get these tickets anyway I thought they had been sold out.
M: They had, but my sister is in the orchestra. She plays the violin.
W: Well, tell her thanks for me. Do you play any instruments
M: No. I tried to learn guitar, but I’m not gifted like my sister. How about you
W: I play the piano.
Text 10
W: This week we’re going to talk about Castle Howard, in Sussex. Castle Howard was badly burnt in a fire two years ago. A lot of paintings and furniture got damaged and it has taken a lot of hard work and patience to restore it back to its previous condition. It will be open to the public for the first time in two years on Sunday the 2nd of April. The opening times are from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm. As of May the 1st Castle Howard will be open daily from 10:00 am to sunset. You’ll be able to visit it all through the summer until the 1st of October, when it will be closed again. It’s well worth a visit. You’ll need a whole day just to wander around its splendid rooms. Of particular interest is the Dining Room in the West Wing with its fascinating collection of china, dating back to the 17th century, when the Howards first came to live in this building. You should also take advantage of its wonderful grounds. You can even have your lunch in the open-air restaurant behind the castle. Castle Howard’s a great day out for all the family with its convenient prices too! For a family of four, the children get in free of charge.
That’s all for today, listeners. But don’t miss next week’s programme.

根据文章第二段中的“‘Someone able-bodied had done it previously. I wanted to see if I could do it on a prosthetic leg and see what would happen,’ she said.”
根据文章第三段中的“Runners using a prosthetic leg can’t use a regular one. They need a running blade (刀锋式跑步义肢). Hunt-Broersma has two, but she was only able to run with one because of the swelling she experienced in her left leg that made it impossible to connect to the other blade. But even with the pain that occurred, she has been able to put up with it and continued.”
通读全文,尤其是第三段中的“But even with the pain that occurred, she has been able to put up with it and continued.”和最后一段中的“‘It has taught me how strong one can be and how important absolute determination is. If you’re mentally strong, you can do anything,’ she said. ‘And our bodies are just amazing…This whole journey was impressive and super hard, but it’s told me how strong I can be as a person and how far I can push myself.’”
根据第一段中“Most people who ran the marathon last month spent days before resting up and days after recovering. But not Jacky Hunt-Broersma. In total, she ran 104 marathons in 104 days. If it’s confirmed by Guinness World Records, that would be a new world record. And she did it all with one leg and a prosthesis (假肢).”
根据画线词所在的句子“Penguins live mainly in the southern hemisphere.”以及后一句“The Galapagos penguin is the only one found north of the equator(赤道).”
根据第二段“They love, they fight, they steal, and because of their funny upright posture, it’s really easy to imagine them having all the same motivations as people.” 故选A项。
根据第三段的“The study proposes that changes in world temperatures and in major ocean currents have been important drivers of penguin evolution.”
根据最后一段“Penguins’ vision is more sensitive towards the blue end of the colour spectrum(光谱)…Those may no longer be needed as penguins find food in cold, salty water and usually swallow the whole fish. Penguins show changes in their wing bones and a reduction of their flight feathers.”

根据第二段的“While social media and messaging apps keep us more connected to each other, many younger users are finding themselves tired out from receiving constant notices and carrying on conversations that can last all day.”
根据最后一段的“As the pressure to be online and always available continues to grow in our society, in-person interactions provide far more real communication than digital ones. From body language to eye contact and all the other social clues that exist in real life and aren’t available in a text message, it’s far easier to be present when you’re face-to-face.”
根据最后一段的“As the pressure to be online and always available continues to grow in our society, in-person interactions provide far more real communication than digital ones.” 故选A。

第一节
One possible version:
Dear Stephen,
I’m Li Hua, one of your students. Learning that some activities are needed for an upcoming spoken English club, I’m glad to share my ideas with you.
To begin with, I’d like to recommend English Drama Performances, through which students can be enthusiastically involved in English speaking practice and deeply immersed in profound English culture. Our participation will undoubtedly help enhance our English proficiency. Additionally, some interactive topic discussions and conversations, such as travel and adventure, enable us to enlighten a sense of curiosity and cultural discovery, cultivating our interest in expressing ourselves and taking our English-speaking abilities to new heights.
Hope my recommendations will be of some help. The spoken English club will surely become one of the sweetest memories rooted in our hearts.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
One possible version:
Then a sudden technical failure caused her background music to cut out. The sudden silence echoed through the hall, and Sarah’s heart skipped a beat. Panic threatened to overwhelm her, but she remembered Mrs Caroline’s words: “The true power of your voice lies not in the accompaniment but in the emotions you convey.” Gathering all her courage, Sarah closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and continued singing. Her pure, unwavering voice resonated through the now silent auditorium, capturing everyone’s attention. Enchanted, the crowd began to clap, building into rapturous applause.
When she stepped off the stage, Sarah recognized a familiar figure among the crowd. It was Mrs Caroline, her eyes glistening with tears of pride and joy. As they embraced, Sarah felt a surge of gratitude to the woman who had believed in her when she didn’t fully believe in herself. “You did it, Sarah,” Mrs Caroline whispered, her voice choked with emotion. Surrounded by her peers, teachers, and parents who were now beaming with admiration, Sarah knew she had discovered a strength within her that could conquer any fear. And as the applause continued, Sarah felt a sense of belonging and accomplishment that she would carry with her for a lifetime.

Most people who ran the marathon last month spent days before resting up and days after recovering. But not Jacky Hunt-Broersma. In total, she ran 104 marathons in 104 days. If it’s confirmed by Guinness World Records, that would be a new world record. And she did it all with one leg and a prosthesis (假肢).
“Someone able-bodied had done it previously. I wanted to see if I could do it on a prosthetic leg and see what would happen,” she said. “I thought it would be a great way to inspire others to push their limits because I truly believe that we’re stronger than what we think. And I’ve been so pleasantly surprised that my body is held up, everything is held up and I’ve made it to 104.”
She actually did not pick up the sport until after she lost the lower part of her left leg in 2001 to a type of cancer called Ewing sarcoma. Runners using a prosthetic leg can’t use a regular one. They need a running blade Hunt-Broersma has two, but she was only able to run with one because of the swelling she experienced in her left leg that made it impossible to connect to the other blade. But even with the pain that occurred, she has been able to put up with it and continued.
All together, Hunt-Broersma ran over 4,385 kilometres. During that time she has had a lot of time to think and has learned a few things about herself. “It has taught me how strong one can be and how important absolute determination is. If you’re mentally strong, you can do anything,” she said. “And our bodies are just amazing…This whole journey was impressive and super hard, but it’s told me how strong I can be as a person and how far I can push myself.”

Researchers recently offered the most complete examination yet of the history of penguins. They said penguins came from a common ancestor shared with a group of seabirds like albatrosses. Penguins first developed the ability to dive, and then lost the ability to fly as they adapted to water.
The earliest-known penguin is called Waimanu manneringi, from New Zealand. It is believed to have lived 61 million years ago. Penguins live mainly in the southern hemisphere. The Galapagos penguin is the only one found north of the equator (赤道). Daniel Ksepka of the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut, is the co-writer of the study that was published in Nature Communications. Ksepka noted that penguins are appealing animals. He added that they are interestingly charming creatures. They love, they fight, they steal, and because of their funny upright posture, it’s really easy to imagine them having all the same motivations as people.
The study proposes that changes in world temperatures and in major ocean currents have been important drivers of penguin evolution. The University of Copenhagen’s Theresa Cole was the study’s lead writer. Cole said the research found a number of genes likely involved in physical changes known as adaptations.
Such adaptations include gene transforms that shift the way penguins see the world. Penguins’ vision is more sensitive towards the blue end of the colour spectrum (光谱). Blue light goes more deeply into the ocean than light at the red end of the spectrum. Genes that help birds detect sally and sour tastes are active in penguins. But genes that help detect bitter and sweet tastes become inactive. Those may no longer be needed as penguins find food in cold, salty water and usually swallow the whole fish. Penguins show changes in their wing bones and a reduction of their flight feathers. Penguins also have reduced air spaces in the bone and the ability to store more oxygen in their muscles for long dives.

When Senait Lara, a 28-year-old video producer, was questioned by her friends about her lack of communication in their group chat, the blame was as follows: she only caught up every few days; when she did, it was hardly an interaction—Lara spent time “liking” messages instead of responding with words and sometimes she would never respond at all. Lara didn’t deny it. She knew she sometimes preferred to completely avoid her phone rather than deal with a large number of requests. Actually, in person, Lara felt comfortable talking with people, but when communication came down to a text message or an e-mail, she wanted to tap out.
While social media and messaging apps keep us more connected to each other, many younger users are finding themselves tired out from receiving constant notices and carrying on conversations that can last all day. The after-effects Delayed responses, forgetting to get back to someone entirely, and a need for frequent breaks.
In fact, a 2023 study exploring the effects of information overload and online conversation dynamics (动态) found that over-exposure to information can suppress the possibility of response by overloading users.
Smartphones have quickly changed into hand-held storage units for our conversations, thoughts, music and everything else. That shift to feeling constantly attached to our phones as if they were a limb relates to the burnout, says psychologist Emily Balcetis.
As the pressure to be online and always available continues to grow in our society, in-person interactions provide far more real communication than digital ones. From body language to eye contact and all the other social clues that exist in real life and aren’t available in a text message, it’s far easier to be present when you’re face-to-face. As Balcetis notes, “At the end of the day, I think what we’re looking for is not more ways to stay connected, but higher quality ways to be connected.”
( )32.What dissatisfied Senait Lara’s friends
A.Lara denying her problems.
B.Lara avoiding using her phone.
C.Lara’s preference for digital communication.
D.Lara’s communication style in the group chat.
( )33.What does Paragraph 2 tell us about many young people
A.They are starting to have memory problems.
B.They refuse to put down their smartphones.
C.They are tired of frequent digital contact.
D.They feel more connected to each other.
( )34.What does the last paragraph mainly stress
A.The need to take a break from digital devices.
B.The pressure of always being available online.
C.The importance of face-to-face communication.
D.The ability to understand clues behind text messages.
( )35.What is the author’s attitude to digital interaction
A.Negative. B.Unconcerned.
C.Supportive. D.Objective.

On hearing the word “vacation”, most people react positively. Experienced travellers will argue that more important than where they go on vacation is who they go with. 36.
Family travel is special and creates lasting memories, but it can also have some challenges. For one, the success of a trip often depends on the relationships that the family members have with one another. If two brothers do not get along at home, the chances are that they will fight during a vacation. 37. If a family is travelling by air, purchasing plane tickets for everyone can be very expensive.
38. Close friends often have similar personalities, so they generally get along with each other and fight less than family members might on a trip. Furthermore, if friends are close, even a terrible trip will not ruin the friendship. 39. All in all, travelling with friends can be a positive experience that results in a great vacation and, likely, a stronger friendship.
Finally, people can choose to travel alone. Solo travellers can be more flexible with transportation than those travelling in a large group. 40. And they also have better chances of getting a seat on buses or planes since they only need one. In addition, solo travellers are more likely to meet locals or other vacationers because they are more likely to want to talk with others.
A.They can change plans more easily.
B.Each person tends to cover his or her individual expenses.
C.Another potential problem of family travel is transportation.
D.Sightseeing and scheduling are not a problem for solo travellers.
E.In fact, friendships are often strengthened with the travel memories.
F.Travelling with friends can be an unforgettable experience for several reasons.
G.Vacations can be classified on the basis of who vacationers choose to travel with.

The school’s hall got very noisy with excitement as students, teachers, and parents filled the seats, eagerly awaiting the start of the annual school talent show. Backstage, the performers paced nervously, their hearts pounding with anticipation and their minds filled with a mixture of excitement and fear.
Among them was Sarah, a shy but talented singer whose passion for music burned brightly within her. Ever since she was a lonely young girl, Sarah had found comfort in music. With nothing but her voice to accompany her, she would sing for hours on end, pouring her heart and soul into each note, each lyric, and each breath.
Sarah’s talent did not go unnoticed. One day, while she was singing softly to herself during a lunch break at school, Mrs Caroline, the choir director, happened to overhear her. Immediately, she saw something special in Sarah—a talent that deserved to rise and shine.
Over the following weeks and months, Mrs Caroline took Sarah under her wing, offering guidance, support, and encouragement every step of the way. She encouraged Sarah to step out of her comfort zone, to embrace her gift, and to share it with the world.
Under Mrs Caroline’s instruction, Sarah began to push herself harder than ever before. She spent hours each day practising her singing, honing her skills, and perfecting her craft. She sought out opportunities to perform in front of others, gradually building up her confidence and overcoming her fears.
When the moment finally came, with a deep breath, Sarah stepped out onto the stage, the spotlight blazing down upon her like a thousand suns. For a moment, Sarah was frozen in place. But then, with a determined smile, she raised the microphone to her lips and began to sing.
