M: Sorry, but it’s already sold.

W: Tom has a great talent for violin and he has no equal in it, though he graduated from an unknown music college.
M: Yes, he is really expert at playing the violin.
Text 3
M: What is that mark on your arm Did you get touched by an insect
W: No, I was holding my sister’s baby and he bit me. He’s like a little dog chewing on everything.

W: Hello, my dear. Nice to meet you. I’m here a lot. At my age, I can’t do much besides sitting in the park.
M: Do your friends or family live nearby
W: Most friends passed away years ago. I see my family sometimes, but they moved out of the city.
M: Well, I own a restaurant around here. Please, come by and order anything you want.

M: OK, OK…What did you tell us before Something about pretending that the crowd is cabbage Ha-ha! I’ve never forgotten that little bit of advice! Maybe it’ll work tonight…
W: I don’t remember saying that. You must have heard it from a movie. I’m not even sure it can make you less afraid. What I said was that close your eyes for 10 seconds and think about your character. It will help you be calm.
M: Well, I’m going to try the advice from the movie. It will make me laugh, and my character is supposed to be very funny.
W: Do anything that helps. We need to impress the judges that are sitting out there!
Text 9
W: It’s a little cold today. But we can see the most beautiful view up here. Hey, what’s that mountain to the left called
M: That’s Mount Karen. And to the right of that with the three small points is Mount Brown.
W: Is this the highest mountain in this area
M: No, actually, Mount Heather, which we will be able to see in just a minute or so, is the highest. But, this is the highest mountain for the most popular activity skiing.
W: Can you ski throughout the year
M: No, it may make you sunburned up there in the summer. So if you want to be up here in other seasons, you’d better choose a cool spring or autumn day. Oh, look, there are two deer feeding in the clearing right below us.
W: Got it. That should be a great photo. So…what is there to do besides skiing at the top of the hill at this time of year
M: Oh there’s plenty to do. We have horseback riding, snowmobile tours, and a petting zoo for children. If you look to your left you’ll see the snowmobile sign going through the mountain.

W: Good afternoon and welcome to Seattle Houseboat Tours. My name’s Elizabeth Jones and I’m your guide today. This is my houseboat Moonlight. Before we go on board, I’d like to give you a little background information. Seattle has one of the largest numbers of houseboats in the US—about 500 of them in fact. That’s quite a high number and shows how popular houseboat living is here. We’re at the southern end of Lake Union right now. As you have probably seen already, this is a lively area with restaurants, shops and cafes. During our one-hour tour you’ll see a number of houseboats. People can pay millions of dollars for the biggest of these. Some of them are quite amazing and have two or three floors. My own is one of the smallest boats, but I still have plenty of room, as you’ll see when I show you around. My living area includes one bedroom with a bathroom, a kitchen and a living room. I also have electricity, running water and network, so I really do have everything I need. You may be interested to know that I’m writing a book on the history of houseboats in the city, and this should be on sale from early July. Well, thank you for listening so far. Now let’s move into the boat and start the tour.

One possible version:
Peter’s euros danced in his pocket, but suddenly he thought of the picnic and the surprise. He carefully selected Grandfather’s favourites, ranging from fresh fruits to various bread. When a shiny and beautiful bicycle bell came into sight, an idea struck him—this could be the perfect surprise! With his heart pounding, Peter rode to his grandfather’s house as fast as possible. The minute Grandfather opened the door, he presented the picnic and the special gift.
“This bicycle bell is for your cane!” said Peter. The old man’s eyes lit up with surprise and joy. He took the bell and attached it to his cane, giving it a little jingle. The sound was music to Peter’s ears, and he knew that this would be the start of a new tradition, a new way for his grandfather to announce his arrival. They spent the afternoon in the park, enjoying their picnic. The market’s treasures could wait; what mattered most was the time spent with loved ones.模块素养测评卷

Europe is famous for big cities and world-class art museums. It’s easy not to notice the small, beautiful villages in Europe. However, if you’re after relaxation, peaceful country walks, beautiful buildings, and chances for different cultures on your next trip, consider cutting down some of your city time and head out to a village instead. Here are three of the most beautiful villages in Europe, along with our top picks for places to stay in each.
Bibury in Gloucestershire, England
Often praised as the most beautiful village of the Cotswolds, Bibury is also one of the most popular places for visitors to stay in the area, and attracts a lot of tourists from around the world. It’s set among the green hills that the area is known for and is composed of light-beige (浅米色) stone houses, including the famous Arlington Row, a line of houses dating back to 1380.
Cong in County Mayo, Ireland
Set on a small sea-facing island on the western coast of Ireland, Cong is a quiet village that’s famous for its grey stone ruins and many outdoor activities. One of the biggest reasons for its fame is that the 1952 film The Quiet Man was made there, but the biggest draw for most visitors is the chance to visit (or stay in) Ashford Castle, which is now run as a great expensive hotel.
Montepulciano in Tuscany, Italy
Spread over a hilltop nearly 2,000 metres above sea level, the Tuscan village of Montepulciano offers beautiful buildings from the Middle Ages, as well as many chances to visit wineries (酿酒厂) and taste the locally produced Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. B [2024·江苏镇江中学高一期中]
On the day he almost died, Kimbal Musk had food on the brain. The Internet startup talent and restaurateur had just arrived in Jackson Hole from a conference where chef Jamie Oliver had spoken about the benefits of healthy eating. This made Musk think a lot—how he might make a difference to the food industry—but beyond expanding his farm-to-table movement along with his restaurant, Musk hadn’t yet broken the code. Then he went sailing down a snowy slope (坡) and fell over, breaking his neck.
Musk eventually made a full recovery, but it involved spending two months on his back, which gave him plenty of time to come up with a plan. Since then, he has launched an initiative to put “learning gardens” in public schools across America and attracted Generation Z to the farming profession by changing shipping containers into high-tech, data-driven and year-round farms, and this year, he is kicking off a new campaign to create one million at-home gardens.
Aimed at reaching low-income families, the Million Gardens Movement was inspired by the pandemic, as both a desire to feel more connected to nature and food insecurity have been at the forefront of so many people’s lives. “We were getting a lot of inquiries about gardening from people that had never gardened before,” says Musk. “People were looking to garden for a bunch of reasons: to save money on groceries, to improve the nutritional quality of their diets, or just to cure the boredom that came with the lockdown.”
The programme offers free garden kits that can be grown indoors or outdoors, and will be distributed through schools that Musk’s non-profit, Big Green, has already partnered with. It also offers free courses on how to get the garden growing and fresh seeds and materials for the changing growing seasons. “It’s not difficult. Anyone can do this, no matter where you come from, no matter where you live. We are all able to grow something,” says Musk.

New research from Barclays LifeSkills found that 70% of the British noticed language changes at work over the last five years. Gen Z, people aged 18—24, appear to be leading the change. “Our research shows that the next generation are clearly going to make their mark on the workforce when it comes to how we communicate,” said Kirstie Mackey, head of Barclays LifeSkills.
“Yours truly”, “Yours sincerely”, and “To whom it may concern” were the three phrases most likely to disappear from the workplace within the next ten years. “Compliments” and “Respects” at the end of an e-mail were the fourth and fifth most likely to go extinct. While these phrases are behind the times in the eyes of the British, “thanks” and “thanks so much” were found to be increasingly popular, with 46% and 50% of respondents (受访者) saying these were friendly responses.
Other more informal phrases, however, were considered to be more divisive—simply going with the short form for thank you, “ta” was considered over-familiar by 29% of respondents, but friendly by 23%. And “hiya” was viewed as friendly by 42%, but as over-familiar by 26%.
The survey shows 49% of Gen Z often use immediate messaging platforms at work, but just 27% of those aged over 55 do so. That age group still prefers e-mail, saying this method feels more professional.
Language expert Laura Bailey says the change towards a more informal way goes hand in hand with the appearance of workplace messaging platforms. “The generational differences can be explained by broader changes in how communication has been taught and what different age groups were familiar with,” Bailey said.
While traditional letter-writing styles translate into any form of written communication for older workers, younger ones have been influenced by changing language styles that spread quickly through social media, Bailey added.
Barclays LifeSkills’ Mackey said that given office-proper language was changing, there were a few things to remember. Avoiding over-familiarity with co-workers and making sure your tone (语气) is considered as friendly were two of them, she said. Another important consideration was whether a short message or e-mail would be enough to express what you want to say, and thinking about which choice the receiver would favour, Mackey suggested.
( )28.What did the new research find about Gen Z
A.They prefer formal language in the workplace.
B.They show less interest in the new style of communication.
C.They place higher importance on direct communication.
D.They drive the changes in communication styles at work.
( )29.What do the British think of phrases like “Yours sincerely” and “Respects”
A.They’re extinct. B.They’re friendly.
C.They’re over-familiar. D.They’re old-fashioned.
( )30.What does Bailey say about immediate messaging platforms
A.They may replace e-mails soon.
B.They make office language informal.
C.They are more convenient than e-mails.
D.They are destroying the English language.
( )31.Which of the following advice may Mackey give to people at the workplace
A.Use formal and proper language.
B.Consider the message receiver’s preference.
C.Keep their distance from senior co-workers.
D.Avoid sending short e-mails to familiar people.

Plastic is everywhere in our modern world. Its toughness makes it an extremely useful material from household items to vehicle parts, but that same toughness makes it hard to break down for recycling or disposal (处理). However, Japanese scientists at the University of Tokyo have developed a new plastic material that can be broken down more easily and can self-heal and remember past shapes.
Based on a kind of plastic called an epoxy resin vitrimer, which is brittle (脆性的), the new plastic has a huge range of advantages. Once scratched (划损) with a knife, it can completely patch itself up after being heated to 150 ℃ for just 60 seconds. When shaped into the shape of a crane, then flattened, it can fold itself back into the crane shape by being heated up. It does all of this much faster than others of its type.
The new plastic can also break down easier. Even if it’s thrown into the environment, it still has less of a problem than other kinds of plastic, which the team demonstrated by placing it in seawater for 30 days. It biodegraded (生物降解) by 25% and released something that is eatable for ocean life.
The new plastic is more resistant to breaking. It can also repair itself, and can recover its original memorized shape. It even biodegrades safely in an ocean environment, according to Shota Ando, a researcher of the study.
The material can be used in a variety of applications. “Building materials for roads and bridges are often composed of epoxy resins mixed with compounds (化合物) such as concrete and carbon,” said Ando. “By using the new plastic, these would be easier to maintain as they would be stronger and healable using heat. Unlike conventional epoxy resins, this new material is hard but flexible, so it could also be expected to strongly bond materials of different hardness and stretch.”
( )32.What is the author’s purpose in writing Paragraph 1
A.To introduce the topic of the text.
B.To show the disadvantages of plastic.
C.To highlight the importance of plastic.
D.To show his views on previous plastic.
( )33.What do the underlined words “patch itself up” mean in Paragraph 2
A.Change itself. B.Destroy itself.
C.Repair itself. D.Burn itself.
( )34.What do we know about the new plastic
A.It is safe for animals in the ocean.
B.It is made up of concrete and carbon.
C.It can change its shape when frozen.
D.It is more brittle than previous plastic.
( )35.What can be the best title for the text

Physicist and Nobel Prize winner Richard Feynman developed a clever learning method known as the Feynman Technique. It involves explaining what you’re learning to others. By teaching what you’ve learned from memory, you engage in active recall. 36. It also ensures that you understand the topic, because you can explain an idea only if you truly understand it. The technique consists of four repeatable steps.
To begin, choose a concept or topic you wish to fully understand. 37. The more interested you are, the faster you’ll grasp it. Moreover, a personally interesting topic will keep you motivated and engaged.
38. Write notes and explain it in a way that makes sense to a five-year-old. If you’d rather avoid actually teaching someone, you can just teach it to an imaginary audience. But it works much better if you use a real person. They’ll be able to let you know when something isn’t clear.
While teaching you may discover gaps in your understanding. 39. Review your notes, reread books, or seek external help to ensure you have a complete understanding of the context before moving forward.
Now that you fully grasp the concept, test your understanding by trying to teach it to another person. This will help you identify any remaining areas of uncertainty you need to revisit.
The Feynman Technique is a great way for kids and grown-ups to learn. 40. You need to actively think about the problem instead of passively reading or listening to someone else. However, with great efforts in mastering this method, you’ll see your learning results improve quicker than ever before.
A.It is mentally demanding.
B.This helps the information stick in your mind better.
C.Teach it to a five-year-old, who would give you direct feedback.
D.Your curiosity about it will determine the pace of your learning.
E.Once you have chosen a topic, you can teach it to someone else.
F.Active engagement plays a key role in promoting deeper learning.
G.When this happens, refer back to the original material for the missing pieces.

From high up in his apartment building, Peter could see the river stretching in both directions. Every Saturday, Peter watched Grandfather riding towards the building on his bicycle. But today, Peter knew that his grandfather wouldn’t come. Peter would not hear the ring of Grandfather’s bicycle bell. And there would be no Saturday afternoon picnic in the park.
Last week, Grandfather had a hip operation. Now he needed a cane (拐杖) to walk—and Peter didn’t know if Grandfather could ever ride his bike again. Peter sighed. London looked beautiful today, but Peter missed his grandfather. Would he ever again hear the ring as Grandfather approached
That’s when Peter had an idea. He was determined to provide Grandfather with a picnic and a surprise. He grabbed his birthday money—10 euro (欧元) —from the top dresser drawer.
A few minutes later, Peter ran down the stairs of his building and burst into the afternoon sunshine. His bike was waiting for him. Peter put on his helmet and rode down the rough road.
The ring of his bicycle bell warned walkers that he was approaching. He rode past the corner hardware store. He rode past the window washer who whistled as he worked. And he rode over a bridge. Peter rode two more blocks and then arrived at the market.
Buckets were filled with varieties of chocolates. Tables were piled with rounds of cheese. And Peter’s favourite baskets overflowed with delicious potato chips and rolls. All smelt nice, and his mouth watered. Then, he passed the toy store full of amazing toys and furthermore, he caught sight of what he had been dreaming of—a game player! The market seemed to be his paradise where everything attracted him.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Paragraph 1:
Peter’s euros danced in his pocket, but suddenly he thought of the picnic and the surprise.
Paragraph 2:
“This bicycle bell is for your cane!” said Peter.
