Text 1
W: That was a great movie. The special effects were cool.
M: I really liked the story and the acting. But the movie could have been a bit shorter.
Text 2
M: Aren’t you up yet We’ll never get to the airport on time at this rate.
W: Don’t rush me. We’ve got plenty of time. The plane only leaves at eleven o’clock.
Text 3
M: I wonder if our children will still be able to breathe clean air, drink clean water and see a blue sky.
W: Yes. I think it’s time man learned to live in harmony with the earth instead of destroying it.
Text 4
M: Mary, a recent study on job interviews says the best meeting time is between 9:00 and 11:00 in the morning, and the worst is after 3:00 in the afternoon.
W: Good news indeed. Mine is at 10:00 am.
M: Oh, you are lucky.
Text 5
W: Hi, Mike. I stopped by to see if you were still looking for a roommate to share your house. My brother wants to move out.
M: Yep, I sure am. Ever since I cut back on my work hours to go to school, I’ve been really low on cash.
Text 6
M: You don’t get sick very often, Tina.
W: Well, I wash my hands a lot. That helps kill germs.
M: Do you do anything else
W: I do other simple things. I drink lots of water and get enough sleep.
M: I need more sleep.
W: Rest is important when you’re sick. Maybe you should go home.
M: I should.
W: And please throw away those tissues first.
Text 7
M: Hi, Lucy. How was your weekend
W: Great. You know, we went mountain climbing in the forest park. The air was so different from the city, cool and fresh.
M: Sounds great!
W: Yeah. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky. And we could see for miles from the top. What about you What did you do
M: Busy packing.
W: Oh, yes, of course. I forgot you and Jenny are moving into a new house. It’s on Wednesday, isn’t it
M: Yeah, two days after. I didn’t realize there are so many things to do.
W: Can I help out with anything
M: Um, it’ll be nice if you could take care of Henry for a couple of days.
W: Henry
M: Yes, my dog.
W: Oh, sure. No problem. You just focus on the move.
Text 8
W: Welcome to this edition of writers. Tonight we have Steven Darcy with us. Congratulations on your book Life and Everything in Between, Steven. It’s such a success.
M: Thank you.
W: Is this your first attempt at poetry Did you ever try it before Did you take any classes in poetry
M: Well, my only real experience was writing business plans. Other than that, I have zero experience, where writing is concerned. I have always had a good grasp of the English language, thanks to my mum who started me reading when I was very little.
W: What is the hardest thing about creating your work
M: Definitely finding the perfect words to fit what I wanted to say. There’s always a word or two that I might still rewrite if given the chance.
W: Will there be more collections of poetry
M: There will be more of something I suppose. But maybe not poetry. I really don’t see myself as a poet. Rather, I see what I wrote as a kind of writing that might inspire people in some way.
Text 9
M: Welcome Jenny and I have got lots to tell you.
W: That’s right. This week Westfield Radio runs its annual competition. Last year it was to find the best dancer, and next year it will be the turn of local actors to enter. But this year we’re looking for the best singer in our city.
M: And what are the rules
W: Not many. You need to phone your entry. We don’t accept entries through the Internet or by fax.
M: Right. Well, it’s school holidays this week, so what’s on offer
W: The sports hall will open an hour earlier than usual at 8:00 am and shut later at 10:30 pm instead of nine. The indoor football ground is always popular and has to be booked in advance.
M: But what about the new swimming pool
W: Not quite such good news, I’m afraid. It will be open about a week later than planned, but good news now—there will be no charge for swimmers for the first week. It’s the same size as the old one, but it is much better equipped.
M: That’s great.
Text 10
M: I can’t tell you how many times someone has said to me, “Man, what a cake job! I mean, you only work 4 hours a day!” It’s true that I do a morning programme from 6:00 am to 10:00 am, but it isn’t all my work time each day. I get up at 2:00 am, and then I take a quick shower and sit down at my computer. I collect programme information and update our programme’s website until 4:30 am. I arrive at the radio station at 5:00 am and spend the next hour preparing, recording and so on. The programme begins at 6:00 am and goes until 10:00 am. After that often I can walk out soon, but sometimes there are meetings. Then I go home and answer programme e-mails, have lunch and have a short rest. Then at about 4:00 pm, I begin preparing for the next day. It usually lasts two hours. So, the 4-hour-day work timetable is much longer than most people think. Luckily, I really enjoy what I do. It’s not only my work, but also my hobby.

B
根据第一段“National Geographic Explorer Paul Salopek is walking from Africa to the tip of South America.”和第二段“Salopek has named his journey the Out of Eden Walk.”及“During each part of his walk, Paul is joined by a local guide.”
根据第二段“As he walks through different countries, landscapes, and cultures, Salopek is documenting what he sees and hears.”和第三段“He has spoken to thousands of people since his walk began. As he puts it, ‘I am in a seven, eight, nine-year-long conversation with total strangers.’” 故选A项。
根据最后一段“As a journalist, Salopek would often fly into an area to cover a story and then quickly leave again. But he felt he was missing part of the story and wanted to dig deeper. The Out of Eden Walk was born from this desire.”
根据最后一段“The goal is to deeply explore some of the major news stories of our times by talking to ordinary people who are affected. As Salopek describes it, ‘It is about slowing down enough to actually inhabit the stories of the day and to get to know the people who are behind the headlines.’” 故选 A项。
C
根据文章第二段“Due to climate change, the number of extreme wildfire events is expected to increase up to 14% by 2030. Apart from billions of dollars of damage they cause, the chemicals they produce are strong pollutants and in 2023, wildfires gave out a record 1.76 billion metric tons of carbon in the atmosphere—equal to more than double Germany’s yearly CO2 emissions(排放物).”
根据“‘But these systems are too dilatory. In order to generate smoke that can be seen from a distance of, say, 10 to 20 miles, the fire has to be very big—you might already have half a football field on fire underneath. Then, if you add the time for firefighters to arrive at the scene, it may have become too big to be put out at all,’ said Dryad’s co-founder, Carsten Brinkschulte.” 故选A。
根据文章第四段“Dryad aims to reduce the detection time of wildfires and catch them early. To do so, the company has designed a solar-powered sensor fitted with a gas detector. ‘It can detect hydrogen, carbon monoxide, etc. Think of it like an electronic nose that you attach to a tree,’ says Brinkschulte. Once the sensor detects a fire, it sends out a signal which is then sent to the Internet by satellite and 4G.Finally, what the forest managers get is an alarm with the exact GPS location of the sensor that picked up the fire.” 故选A。
根据文章最后一段“So far, Dryad has tested 300 sensors across Europe and plans to make 230,000 units next year. ‘Our goal is to set up 120 million of them by 2030, which would be able to save 3.9 million hectares of forest from burning and prevent 1.7 billion metric tons of CO2 from reaching the atmosphere,’ says Brinkschulte.”
根据文章第二段“If you’re trying to recall the right words in another language, your brain is forced to inhibit your mother tongue. This process, called cognitive inhibition, helps improve your brain function.”
根据文章第四段“One is that the participants were highly motivated volunteers probably of high cognitive level for their age, making it hard to see any improvements.” 故选A项。
根据文章最后一段“Perhaps more importantly, Prof. Grossman said, learning another language offers other potential advantages, like travelling or connecting with new communities. My father, for example, has remained pen friends with his first teacher and travelled to France numerous times. And at 76, he’s as sharp as ever.”
通读全文,根据第一段“My father started learning French at 57, drawn by the potential benefits of bilingualism (双语能力) in delaying dementia (痴呆).”(我父亲57岁开始学习法语,被双语能力在延缓痴呆方面的潜在好处所吸引。)以及“But can this really boost brain health ”(但这真的能促进大脑健康吗 )可知,文章的最佳标题为B项“Can learning a new language delay dementia ”(学习一门新语言能延缓痴呆吗 )。故选B项。

37.G 根据空前内容“It will string text together in a way that makes sense but often cannot ‘read between the lines’. ”可知,AI创作的文本只是以一种有意义的方式把文本放在一起,但往往不能“领会言外之意”。选项G“这意味着人工智能生成的每一个单词、句子和声明都应该被认真对待。”是上文内容的自然延续,指的是我们需要谨慎对待AI创作的文本。故选G项。
38.D 根据空前内容“Don’t forget that the ‘person’ you’re speaking to is actually a machine, not a human.” 下文“It only presents text and language based on prewritten models and rules.”
根据下文“With all the focus on AI-generated text, you might not notice that images and videos are also part of the generative AI landscape. Your photos and facial image become available to AI when uploaded, which makes it harder to protect your identity. So be careful about your privacy and always remember that any data you upload to the Internet can be stored, scanned and processed by AI.”
40.F 根据空前内容“And with open policy conservation and some oversight, AI can be a powerful learning and engagement tool.”

One possible version:
Dear Chris,
How’s everything going We recently organized a design competition themed “Future School” during our school’s science and technology festival and the exciting news is that my work won the first prize. I can’t wait to tell you.
In the future, schools will be very different from what we have today. My design mainly focuses on technology. With the advancement of technology, the space in the classroom will increase and the equipment will be more in line with individual requirements. In the future, the school will pay more attention to the students’ ability and their talents, so more classes will be open to them.
I’m happy after winning the competition, which will greatly boost my enthusiasm for learning.
Yours,
Li Hua

One possible version:
Alice, deeply touched by this unexpected kindness, decided to reciprocate(回报) in her own way. She spent the whole afternoon baking a large batch of her favourite muffins. Then she carefully wrote a thank-you note, expressing her deep gratitude for their kindness. The next day, she went to the local TV store where the two ladies worked and presented the muffins and the note to them. They were extremely touched and surprised by her gesture. This small act of kindness strengthened the bond between them.
As time went by, Alice and the two ladies became good friends. They often visited each other, sharing their daily lives, dreams, and even family stories. Whenever one of them was in trouble, the other two would be there to offer support. Their friendship became a beautiful example in the neighbourhood, inspiring more people to be kind and helpful to others. They learned that even a small act of kindness could create a deep and lasting connection.

Would you like to admire autumn’s leaves Does the colourful and natural scenery in the autumn attract you to travel there We have selected four popular choices for leaf watching in America.
Littleton, New Hampshire
Its riverside village has a path along the water where visitors can appreciate the autumn leaves by the riverbanks. There’s also a Sunday farmers’ market and a number of antique (古玩) stores to look at. But the historic town’s biggest draw is what lies on its doorstep. To the southwest there’s White Mountain National Forest, a favourite for outdoor lovers. There are hiking trails and peaks with thick colourful forests in autumn.
Bolton Landing, New York
On Lake George in northern New York state, Bolton Landing is a beautiful town with a charming main street. Autumn makes its surrounding Adirondack Mountains’ forests even more attractive. The Adirondack Balloon Festival is another highlight, during which travellers can watch the more than 70 hot-air balloons go up at sunrise against the leafy skyline.
La Conner, Washington
Since the 1940s, this place has been a gathering place for artists, with fiery red, orange, and yellow larch, poplar, and maple trees forming the town’s autumn colours, and has long been a source of inspiration for painters and writers. The restored historical buildings now house local restaurants, cafes, museums and galleries. You can walk around the town and admire a collection of local art organized by the La Conner Arts Commission each year.
Greenville, Maine
Colours appear earlier in the far north and visitors heading for Greenville to experience autumn on Moosehead Lake should plan on taking their trip in September or the first week of October. The lake is considered one of the best places to bathe in autumn colours in Maine. Travellers can also hike to Moxie Falls, a waterfall surrounded by leaves, to admire autumn’s beauty.

National Geographic Explorer Paul Salopek is walking from Africa to the tip of South America. He is following the path our human ancestors took out of Africa about 200,000 years ago.
Salopek has named his journey the Out of Eden Walk. As he walks through different countries, landscapes, and cultures, Salopek is documenting what he sees and hears. And he isn’t walking alone. During each part of his walk, Paul is joined by a local guide. Along the way, he meets people from small villages, cities, and country farms. Sometimes, they give him a place to stay for a night or two. Often, his hosts share a little bit about their lives with him.
The Out of Eden Walk is well-named. Besides a few rides on boats or ships, Salopek is walking the entire way. No cars. He doesn’t even ride bikes, though he does use pack animals. An important part of Salopek’s mission is to tell the stories of ordinary people. Walking gives him more time to look around and to talk to the people he encounters. He has spoken to thousands of people since his walk began. As he puts it, “I am in a seven, eight, nine-year-long conversation with total strangers.”
Following a story is not new for Paul Salopek. He is a journalist. He has written for The Atlantic, the Chicago Tribune, National Geographic, and other publications. His works have earned many awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes.
As a journalist, Salopek would often fly into an area to cover a story and then quickly leave again. But he felt he was missing part of the story and wanted to dig deeper. The Out of Eden Walk was born from this desire. Salopek calls it slow journalism. The goal is to deeply explore some of the major news stories of our times by talking to ordinary people who are affected. As Salopek describes it, “It is about slowing down enough to actually inhabit the stories of the day and to get to know the people who are behind the headlines.”
( )24.What is the Out of Eden Walk

A.Fruitful.
B.Discouraging.
C.Challenging.
D.Time-wasted.

In the summer of 2021, wildfires caused a disaster on an Italian island, burning over 69,000 acres of land and displacing thousands. The Montiferru region, badly affected by the fires, is testing out a new warning system for wildfires, developed by a German company called Dryad.
Due to climate change, the number of extreme wildfire events is expected to increase up to 14% by 2030. Apart from billions of dollars of damage they cause, the chemicals they produce are strong pollutants and in 2023, wildfires gave out a record 1.76 billion metric tons of carbon in the atmosphere—equal to more than double Germany’s yearly CO2 emissions (排放物).
Existing early warning systems are based on the visual detection of smoke, either through satellite imaging, cameras on the ground or human observers. “But these systems are too dilatory. In order to generate smoke that can be seen from a distance of, say, 10 to 20 miles, the fire has to be very big—you might already have half a football field on fire underneath. Then, if you add the time for firefighters to arrive at the scene, it may have become too big to be put out at all,” said Dryad’s co-founder, Carsten Brinkschulte.
Dryad aims to reduce the detection time of wildfires and catch them early. To do so, the company has designed a solar-powered sensor fitted with a gas detector. “It can detect hydrogen, carbon monoxide, etc. Think of it like an electronic nose that you attach to a tree,” says Brinkschulte. Once the sensor detects a fire, it sends out a signal which is then sent to the Internet by satellite and 4G.Finally, what the forest managers get is an alarm with the exact GPS location of the sensor that picked up the fire.
So far, Dryad has tested 300 sensors across Europe and plans to make 230,000 units next year. “Our goal is to set up 120 million of them by 2030, which would be able to save 3.9 million hectares of forest from burning and prevent 1.7 billion metric tons of CO2 from reaching the atmosphere,” says Brinkschulte.
( )28.What do the facts mentioned in Paragraph 2 mainly show
A.The danger of wildfire pollutants.
B.The environmental stress from wildfires.
C.The climate change over the years.
D.The problem of CO2 emissions in Europe.
( )29.What does the underlined word “dilatory” mean in Paragraph 3

A.Slow. B.Distant.
C.Precious. D.Wasteful.
( )30.How does the new warning system operate
A.By “smelling” the fire and reporting its location.
B.By putting out the fire directly in its early stages.
C.By forecasting the weather to prevent the fire.
D.By going around the forest to check the fire.
( )31.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.Climate change will deepen wildfires.
B.The system has great possibilities for use.
C.Europe especially suffers from wildfires.
D.The system needs further improvement.

My father started learning French at 57, drawn by the potential benefits of bilingualism (双语能力) in delaying dementia (痴呆). Now, 20 years later, he’s on his third teacher. Many people like my father have attempted to pick up a new language. But can this really boost brain health
According to experts, regularly using a new language brings cognitive (认知的) benefits. If you’re trying to recall the right words in another language, your brain is forced to inhibit your mother tongue. This process, called cognitive inhibition, helps improve your brain function. Repeating this process makes your brain more resistant to diseases like dementia. The more you challenge your brain, the better it functions, even if your brain health starts to decline.
However, evidence for the benefits of learning a second language in your 60s is weaker. Research by Dr Leo Antoniou found that older Italians who took English lessons for four months didn’t see any difference in their cognition scores, but people who didn’t saw their scores decline. Prof. Diana Smith’s 2023 studies found similar results.
Researchers offered a few potential explanations for their disappointing results. One is that the participants were highly motivated volunteers probably of high cognitive level for their age, making it hard to see any improvements. “When choosing participants, we have to be careful: Are they really representative of the population ” said Dr Judith Ware. Another is that the language interventions were perhaps too short. These studies have used language lessons that “were very different in their length and frequency”, said Prof. Laura Grossman.
To Dr Antoniou, the limited findings are not entirely surprising. No one would say that learning a new language for six months would be the same as having used two languages for your entire life. But he does think that language lessons can provide cognitive benefits by being cognitively stimulating.
Perhaps more importantly, Prof. Grossman said, learning another language offers other potential advantages, like travelling or connecting with new communities. My father, for example, has remained pen friends with his first teacher and travelled to France numerous times. And at 76, he’s as sharp as ever.
( )32.What happens in the process of “cognitive inhibition”
A.Memory improves.
B.Brain health worsens.
C.Dementia is cured.
D.Native language is held back.
( )33.Which is a possible explanation for the disappointing research results
A.The poor choice of research participants.
B.The great length of the language course.
C.The intervention of the first language.
D.The age difference of the research subjects.
( )34.Whose opinion does the author support by mentioning his father’s experience
A.Leo Antoniou’s. B.Diana Smith’s.
C.Laura Grossman’s. D.Judith Ware’s.
( )35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.Is it never too late to learn a new language
B.Can learning a new language delay dementia
C.Why does my father start learning a new language
D.How does learning a new language benefit aging brain

Over recent years, AI has become accessible to everyone, particularly young people, significantly simplifying our lives compared to before. 36. Here are three things you can keep in mind as you navigate AI technology in everyday life.
Be critical. Generative AI can do amazing things like generating images or writing stories, but it does not reflect on what it is writing. It will string text together in a way that makes sense but often cannot “read between the lines”. 37. You can use this as an opportunity to develop critical thinking skills.
Watch out for chatbots. Chatbots are computer programs designed to simulate (模拟) conversations as if they were another human being. But there may not be any human checks on inappropriate content. Don’t forget that the “person” you’re speaking to is actually a machine, not a human. 38. It only presents text and language based on prewritten models and rules.
39. With all the focus on AI-generated text, you might not notice that images and videos are also part of the generative AI landscape. Your photos and facial image become available to AI when uploaded, which makes it harder to protect your identity. So be careful about your privacy and always remember that any data you upload to the Internet can be stored, scanned and processed by AI.
Nevertheless, the developments in this field are highly exciting. And with open policy conservation and some oversight, AI can be a powerful learning and engagement tool. 40.
A.Understand AI’s limitations.
B.Pay attention to visual uploads.
C.However, there are risks as well as benefits.
D.It does not share your ideas, beliefs, culture or religion.
E.If left unaccompanied, chatbots could feed into your curiosity.
F.The potential benefits that would come from using this technology are endless.
G.This means every word, sentence and claim AI generates should be treated carefully.

I chose to hurriedly shut the front door to many strangers when they came knocking with the intention of selling the things. But around Eastertime this year, a dear friend of mine had an experience that changed my mind towards these “unexpected visitors”.
Alice who recently moved to a new neighbourhood, had been housebound(足不出户的) all week suffering from the severe flu when, early one morning, there was an annoying knock on the door. Peering out of the window, she saw two young ladies seriously holding leaflets and a TV set model. She knew a large TV set establishment nearby and assumed a message was about to be delivered. “This is the last thing I need today,” she muttered to herself and hesitantly opened the door.
Coughing, she poked her head out and impatiently informed them that she wasn’t the slightest bit interested in any TV products. Furthermore, she added, she was feeling quite unwell and abruptly shut the door. The ladies politely turned and left in silence. A few hours later, the same two ladies were back again. Really annoyed this time, she opened the door ready to give them a piece of her mind. Before she could speak, these women, with concerned looks on their faces, handed Alice a dish, saying “We’re so sorry we disturbed you earlier. We thought you may like this home-made chicken soup. Hopefully it might make you feel better.” Alice was surprised by this lovely gesture. Being new to the area, she didn’t know many neighbours or people who could assist her with shopping so the gesture was really appreciated. She could only smile embarrassedly and sincerely thanked them. With that, the ladies left.
After Alice told this story to me, I thought about how touching this deed was. Especially in today’s world where sadly, kindness and thoughtfulness seem so rare. I also realized that thinking about others and showing kindness is the real essence of love.
Paragraph 1:
Alice, deeply touched by this unexpected kindness, decided to reciprocate(回报) in her own way.

Paragraph 2:
As time went by, Alice and the two ladies became good friends.
