Text 10
M: Hello, I’m Maxim Vengerov, and I’m very happy to share with you my connection with Open Tchaikovsky Competition. It was June 1986 when I came to Moscow to participate in Open Tchaikovsky Competition at the age of 10 from Chelyabinsk. This was actually the turning point of my life. Then I attended a world music festival in Berlin. And it was interesting to say that a kid made his breakthrough already at the age of 10. And that was me. Now as a judge of the competition, I can see clearly the huge challenges facing the musicians in the competition. Where else can you see young players playing within ten days classical works and Russian traditional music before coming to the final stage As a musician, it’s important to give maximum attention and time to your own reflections of your own feelings. So, what I’m really looking for in the competition is to meet someone who can touch me musically. I want to see the seed, at least the seed of the great tree that can grow. I would go for this violinist. I would go for this musician.

One hour a day doesn’t sound like much when you want to improve a skill, especially when you only spend 20 minutes of that hour reading and learning.”可知,上文提到作者列出每天要做的事情,本句承接上文,说明这一习惯的好处。D选项“据说这种习惯能改善你的效率、健康和幸福感。”符合语境,故选D项。

Dear Owen,
I can’t wait to share with you the exciting news that I won the first place in the English speech contest themed “Artificial Intelligence Changes Our Life” held by our school last Saturday.
I’d like to express my deepest gratitude to you. You assisted me in organizing my thoughts and ideas, practised with me patiently and corrected my grammar mistakes carefully. It was your patient instruction that made my speech so appealing. Not only did this speech impress students with the knowledge of artificial intelligence but it also aroused their interest in science and technology.
In addition, the winter vacation is approaching. I sincerely invite you to come to China.
Yours,
Li Hua

2.续写线索:母亲分享了自己的故事—作者的努力—加入辩论队—作者感悟。
One possible version:
I stared at Mum and listened eagerly. She shared her own stories of failure and disappointment and how she turned them into opportunities for growth. “Every rejection is a lesson,” she said. Under her guidance, it took me the next three months to improve my skills. I practised debates, read extensively to stay updated on current events, and sought feedback from teachers and peers. I even started a debate club after school to gain more experience.
I did make it when a second chance came 3 months later. When the team needed an extra member for an upcoming tournament, they considered my dedication and improvement. This time, I was ready, whose performance in the tryouts was confident and well-prepared. Joining the team was a sweet victory, but the real win was in the perseverance I had built and the lessons I had learned along the way. My mother’s wisdom had led me through a tough time, and I was grateful for the journey that had made me a better debater and a stronger person.单元素养测评卷(五)

From what colour to paint the kitchen to the origin of a famous quote, or even something as small as what to have for dinner, I loved to argue about what was right. Day or night, I was ready to argue with whoever was unlucky enough to strike up a conversation with me. My challengers included my children, my wife, friends and even strangers.
This habit had often caused trouble in my family. There were moments when my marriage became tense and my kids grew distant. The longest fight I had was with my parents, and it dragged on for nearly a year. Even small disagreements had the potential to blow up.
One afternoon, I was playing a board game with my granddaughter when she made a move that broke the rules. I corrected her, but she ended up making the same mistake again. I read the rules out loud and asked if she got it this time. She smiled at me and shook her head. “Grandpa, why are you so hyped (激动的) ” she asked. “It’s just a game. We’re here to have fun, aren’t we ”
Something about her words really hit home. We weren’t there to be right; we were there to enjoy ourselves. What truly mattered was our bond and the moments we shared.
My drive to win hadn’t really been about seeking the truth, but about showing I was better than everyone else. I wanted people to see me as the most capable person in the room. What I came to realize was that my behaviour was having the opposite effect. I was gaining no respect or appreciation by doing this.
And the more I practised, the better I mastered the art of keeping quiet. What I could never have anticipated was just how much my overall happiness would improve by simply listening calmly to others without interrupting. It taught me a newfound tolerance of difference. When I don’t agree with someone, a neutral response such as “Who knows Maybe.” can work, too.

How can we keep our minds nice and sharp as we get older Mentally challenging tasks like playing games, solving puzzles, and reading books could all be beneficial in this regard, according to a new study.
Researchers from the University of Southern Mississippi, Texas A&M University, and Indiana University looked at records of 5,932 people aged 50 or above in 2012, with slight cognitive impairment (认知障碍). Those people were followed for eight years through phone interviews and self-reported surveys as part of the larger Health and Retirement Study project.
Based on the data collected, the researchers graded the participants as Low, Middle, or High in terms of how often they got involved in cognitively stimulating leisure activities, or CSLAs—activities including reading, writing, playing games such as chess, doing crossword puzzles, and taking part in hobbies.
One of the tests looked at the reduction in memory scores. “In short, the high-level participation group showed higher cognitive function levels during the study period and maintained a similar level of cognitive functions compared to the other groups,” says Jun Hyoung Kim, an associate professor of health behaviour at Texas A&M University.
The benefits of high levels of involvement in CSLAs were in agreement with memory, attention, and cognitive processing speed, the researchers report. Based on standard cognitive tests, those in the high group did better than the middle group, and the middle group did better than the low group to a significant level.
While cognitive decline was obvious in all three groups over the study period, the decline was slower in the high participation group. That suggests regular activities that keep the mind sharp can fight the effects of aging—at least in people who have already been living with slight cognitive impairment.
“These findings suggest that positive lifestyle interventions (干预), a non-medical treatment, have an important role in promoting cognitive function and in the prevention of cognitive decline in aging or older adults with slight cognitive impairment,” says one researcher. Since slight cognitive impairment often goes before conditions such as Alzheimer’s and dementia (痴呆), this research could contribute to exploring treatments that prevent more serious cognitive losses.
( )28.What were the participants asked to do during the research
A.Match themselves with the proper group.
B.Report their involvement in certain activities.
C.Receive medical treatments for cognitive impairment.
D.Complete specially designed cognitive tests regularly.
( )29.What does the study find about involvement in CSLAs
A.The more, the better.
B.Better late than never.
C.Fail to plan, plan to fail.
D.Competition benefits both parties.
( )30.What’s the significance of the research
A.It can show that cognitive decline is unavoidable.
B.It may help in developing methods to prevent dementia.
C.It suggests that CSLAs are only effective for a short period.
D.It proves that slight cognitive impairment always leads to Alzheimer’s.
( )31.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.The importance of cognitive tests in aging
B.Non-medical treatments for cognitive impairment
C.Keeping mentally sharp: the role of challenging tasks
D.Cognitive decline in older adults: a trend that can’t be stopped

Will artificial intelligence (AI) replace my job This is a question that many people think about these days. At present, the application of AI robotics in professional fields, as well as ChatGPT’s abilities to write essays, solve complex problems and more, have heightened moral concerns.
Some people see AI as the ultimate cure for society’s most fundamental problems, while others fear that AI will overtake human intelligence. These two views are based on the assumption that AI is better and smarter than humanity and may ultimately replace human decision-making. But given the fact that technology is the product of human civilization, the challenge from AI is something we have created for ourselves as we keep pushing our own boundaries. In other words, AI’s progress, functions and future direction are all determined by the human brain.
Before AI becomes a threat to humanity, the international community should reach an agreement on the role it is to play. More importantly, related laws and regulations must ensure that AI will benefit society and prevent it from threatening human life. Robots, for example, are believed to develop emotional intelligence sometime, which enables them to recognize, understand and express emotions in a way that is similar to humans, but we must avoid AI copying human emotions. Without legal restrictions, AI may become a social disaster.
The AI-driven new industrial revolution is irreversible. This, like previous ones, which introduced changes that had been unimaginable before, will certainly affect human employment. But it always turned out that humanity was able to adapt to each industrial revolution and create new forms of employment. Therefore, it’s unnecessary to worry AI will replace our jobs. While technology advances at a rapid pace, what we need to do is welcome the AI era rather than block its unfolding for fear of the unknown.
( )32.Why are some people concerned about AI
A.It may outsmart humans.
B.It has led to social problems.
C.It has been applied widely.
D.It is the product of humanity.
( )33.How can we prevent AI’s potential threat
A.By stirring emotions. B.By blocking functions.
C.By setting restrictions. D.By changing regulations.
( )34.What does the underlined word “irreversible” in the last paragraph mean
A.Undesirable. B.Unavoidable.
C.Unpredictable. D.Unbelievable.
( )35.What does the writer suggest readers do with the coming of the AI era
A.Accept it passively. B.Deal with it positively.
C.Respond to it randomly. D.Defend it unconditionally.

My morning routine has looked very different over the years. As a freelancer (自由职业者), I don’t have a set time I need to wake up. So, it’s easy to sleep in until 10 am, then pull my laptop into bed and start work the moment I open my eyes. 36.
I had yet to find the morning routine that worked for me until I saw The 5 am Club and decided to see what it was about. 37. The core message is his advice to wake up at 5 am following his 20/20/20 rule. That is: spend the first hour of your day doing 20 minutes of exercise, 20 minutes of reflection, and 20 minutes of learning.
38. I set my alarm for a painfully early 5 am to see whether it’s worth the reputation.
On my first morning, I got all the wisdom found in Sharma’s book and felt ready to apply it to my own life. 20 minutes of exercise warmed my body up, distracting me away from social media or TV series. After 20 minutes of reflection, I worked out a daily to-do list. 39. Getting up at 5 am helped me focus on the things that mattered to me most. One hour a day doesn’t sound like much when you want to improve a skill, especially when you only spend 20 minutes of that hour reading and learning. 40. If you aim to improve a skill by just 1% each day, over a year, these days will pile up and you’ll have improved by more than 300%.
Of course, you can customize the routine to suit your life and goals. The point is that you persist in getting up early and spending an hour bettering yourself each day.
A.We all have a limited mental capacity.
B.But Sharma argues that a small amount of daily progress can add up.
C.The book is the bestseller by Robin Sharma, an advisor of Microsoft.
D.The routine is said to transform your productivity, health, and well-being.
E.But I want to be the happiest, healthiest, most productive version of myself.
F.At first, I didn’t have faith in the book for I was used to my old morning routine.
G.We may have the intention to read a chapter of a personal development book each day.

I was nominated (提名) for our school’s debate team. I jumped at the chance. When I got home that day, I began to fill out the application form, trying hard to prove how I met all the team’s criteria: strong communication skills, teamwork, and a good understanding of current events.
The next day, I handed in my application and waited with eagerness. I was on tenterhooks (如坐针毡) , anticipation building up with each tick of the clock.
Two weeks went by, and I received a letter from the school about the debate team, which began with “I’m sorry to…”. As soon as the school bus let me off that afternoon, I raced into the house. My mother was typing at the computer.
“Mum,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper, “I didn’t make the debate team.”
She looked up, a smile playing on her lips, thinking I was joking, and playfully reached out to high-five me. But the tears in my eyes told a different story.
“No, really, I wasn’t picked,” I told her, handing her the letter.
Her smile faded, replaced by a look of genuine concern. “Oh, sweetheart, I’m sorry,” she said, surprised. “There must be some mistake.” She called the debate team advisor, but he confirmed there were no mistakes and the decision was final. Hearing that, I broke down and burst out crying.
The rejection stung (刺痛) me, especially when I saw friends celebrating their acceptance. I felt cheated, questioning the fairness of the process. In my view, some selected didn’t deserve it as much as I did. Bitterness crept into (潜入) my words as I complained.
“I’m the best fit for the team,” I protested.
“See, Jenny, complaining won’t get you on the team.” Mum gave me a serious look.

Paragraph 1:
I stared at Mum and listened eagerly.

Paragraph 2:
I did make it when a second chance came 3 months later.
