W: If we win, what will we get
M: All the information of the prizes is on our website. You can read carefully for more details.
W: OK. Thank you very much!
Text 10
M: I am here today to announce that I am running for the student body president! Many of my teachers were trying to convince me to run, and my parents thought it would be good for my future, but the real reason is you guys. I have been at this school for three full years, and I want to do something special before I leave for the University of Texas next year. Many people have promised to put new soda machines in the cafeteria or build a new baseball field. These might be popular choices, but I’d rather do something that will help everyone. I want to set up a technology lab that all students and teachers will have access to. Sirra Nevada High School is the only public high school in California that still doesn’t have modern computers. Studies show that technology skills are what employers are looking for in the 21st century, and everyone here should learn them. We’ll be able to offer a whole new set of classes, and we can use the technology lab to do our homework, research topics for papers, and relax between classes. Vote for me if you want to see this great idea become a reality. Thank you!

C
根据第二段“Mark maintains that a shorter attention span has three downsides: the first is that people make more errors when they do attention shifting; the second downside is that it takes longer to do something, because we have to adjust to every new task every time we shift; the third downside—maybe this is the worst of all—is that stress increases. When people are working on multiple tasks and they have to shift their attention, their blood pressure rises.” 故选A。
根据画线词后文“If it’s just boredom or procrastination(拖延), make a deal with yourself to work another 20 minutes, and then treat yourself to a reward.”
根据第三段“So she offered a couple of tips for staying focused. First, when you feel the itch to change tasks, analyse why. If it’s just boredom or procrastination (拖延), make a deal with yourself to work another 20 minutes, and then treat yourself to a reward.”

but前后表示转折,根据前一句“Graphene, a material made from a single layer of carbon atoms, is a good electrical conductor resistant to heat and acids.”可知,前面讲述了石墨烯的特征和作为导电体的良好性能,所以后文应讲述石墨烯一直以来没有被开发成导电体的问题,再结合第三段中的“The problem has been the lack of what is known as a bandgap.”
根据第三段中的“Semiconductors have bands of higher and lower energy and a point—the bandgap—at which excited electrons can jump from one to the other. This effectively allows the flow of current to be switched on and off, so it is either conducting or not conducting, creating the binary system of zeros and ones used in digital computers.”
根据第四段中的“De Heer said the electrical properties of a graphene semiconductor were far better than those of silicon chips.” 故选A项。

One possible version:
“We’ll get them later,” I told her. I just did not want to walk back down the stairs and unlock the garage door for a bunch of worthless weeds. Putting my hand onto her small shoulder, I began directing her back into the house. She stood there with tears welling up in her eyes. “These flowers are specially for my mummy and daddy,” she sobbed. All of a sudden, I realized that those baseball gloves were like gold to those homeless children just as those weeds were beautiful flowers to my granddaughter.
I turned around, walked back to the end of the porch and opened the gate. Then I walked down the three stairs, took out my keys and opened the garage door. Wearing a shining smile on her face, Madison ran past me, grabbing the little treasures she had picked moments before. “Thank you, grandma, I love you!” she said. I knelt down, looked at the green, now lifeless weeds and smiled as I saw the beauty of a dozen beautiful red roses reflected in her eyes. As is often the case, something valueless to adults means a lot to children.

Bristol Old Vic
When the Theatre Royal (now Bristol Old Vic) was built, electricity hadn’t been discovered. For over 250 years the people who have owned, worked inside and visited the theatre have kept records about their activity. These are kept safe at the University of Bristol Theatre Collection, and you’ll discover a range of documents which record the history of the theatre, from its foundation in 1764 up until the present day. Here are some of them.
BEGINNING
In 1764 businessmen Alexander Edgar and Thomas Symons suggested building a new theatre between Baldwin Street and the back of Coopers’ Hall in King Street. The estimated cost was £2,000 to be split among 40 subscribers, but the building work cost more than expected. Owning shares allowed them to influence decisions about the theatre.
SILVER TICKET
Each of the original Bristol Old Vic shareholders was given a silver ticket that promised sight of any performance held at the theatre. As the holders were clever businessmen, they insisted that the silver tickets should be loaned or traded. This enabled them to make some extra money but made it extremely difficult for the theatre managers to keep track of who was allowed to see shows for free.
250TH BIRTHDAY
In May 2016, the theatre celebrated its 250th birthday! As the oldest continuously-working theatre in the English-speaking world, it deserved a proper party, so Bristol-based Limbic Cinema was hired to create a film of the theatre’s historical highlights which was projected (放映) onto the theatre itself.
( )21.Where can you find the information mentioned above
A.At Baldwin Street.
B.At Coopers’ Hall in King Street.
C.At the University of Bristol Theatre Collection.
D.At Bristol-based Limbic Cinema.
( )22.How was the theatre’s 250th birthday celebrated
A.By making a film projected in theatres across England.
B.By building Bristol-based Limbic Cinema.
C.By releasing silver tickets in memory of the birthday.
D.By creating a film about its history.
( )23.What’s the purpose of the text
A.To introduce some information of Bristol Old Vic.
B.To change people’s view on Bristol Old Vic.
C.To recommend a movie related to the theatre.
D.To compare the theatre and others.
An impressive invention made by a teenager, called Anna Du, is helping to clean up small pieces of plastic from the ocean.
While walking along her local beaches in Massachusetts, the young student began collecting waste plastic bags and bottles. But what she noticed was a large number of tiny pieces of plastic or microplastics that were impossible to pick up. At just 12 years old, Du set out to solve the problem. After testing a few prototypes(原型) in her backyard, she invented a remotely operated vehicle that uses the infrared camera(红外摄像机) to detect microplastics on the ocean floor. More recently, Du has also created a simulation(模拟) model that uses artificial intelligence to predict where microplastics are located.
Du’s robot invention has earned her awards at top science fairs in the US, and she’s now a nationally recognized advocate for microplastic awareness and pollution prevention. “When I first started doing science fairs, I had no idea that a young girl without lots of money and with just a little advanced engineering knowledge could make a difference in the world. I’ve learned that I truly love working on a problem that’s so much larger than me,” Du said.
Du has also released a new book to help spread the word not only about the dangers of microplastics but also about the ways to relieve the problem. Titled Microplastics & Me, the book follows Du’s own story of how she went from worrying about the environment to designing award-winning solutions. Writing for kids of her own age, the young girl alerts her readers to the threat of microplastic pollution and urges them to care about the environment. The book hopes to encourage young students to get into science, technology, engineering and maths(STEM) subjects and to inspire a new generation of inventors and engineers. What’s more, Du has even raised more than $7,000 to distribute the book free to kids and libraries in high-need communities.

Does it ever seem like something is going on with our attention spans Gloria Mark, an attention researcher at the University of California, says there is scientific evidence that attention spans have shrunk considerably. “We started studying attention span length over 20 years ago,” Mark said. “In 2003, we found that attention spans averaged about two-and-a-half minutes on any screen before people switched. In the past five, six years, they are averaging 47 seconds on the screen.”
Mark maintains that a shorter attention span has three downsides: the first is that people make more errors when they do attention shifting; the second downside is that it takes longer to do something, because we have to adjust to every new task every time we shift; the third downside—maybe this is the worst of all—is that stress increases. When people are working on multiple tasks and they have to shift their attention, their blood pressure rises.
You don’t have to be a professor to guess at the cause of our great distract ability: it’s technology, of course—phones, social media, texting. It might be hard to think of the last time you even had a tech-free hour. So she offered a couple of tips for staying focused. First, when you feel the itch to change tasks, analyse why. If it’s just boredom or procrastination(拖延), make a deal with yourself to work another 20 minutes, and then treat yourself to a reward.
Second, picture yourself at the end of the day. What do you want to have accomplished What do you want to feel “A concrete visualization of yourself sitting on the couch, you know, watching your favourite show is really good motivation,” she said.
The Internet has this incredible resource available to us, so rather than be upset by it because it distracts us, how can we turn that around and instead find value from it And how can we utilize our time best when we use the resources from the Internet without getting exhausted from it These questions are what Gloria Mark will focus on in her subsequent research.
( )28.What is the second paragraph mainly about
A.Negative effects of short attention spans.
B.Benefits of long attention spans.
C.Causes of short attention spans.
D.Ways to deal with short attention spans.
( )29.What does the underlined word in Para.3 probably mean
A.Necessity. B.Courage.
C.Desire. D.Choice.
( )30.Which of the following may Gloria Mark suggest
A.Imagining what you have accomplished at the end of the day is a waste of time.
B.Multitasking is a good way to extend our attention span.
C.It is necessary to think twice before shifting your tasks.
D.We’d better say no to the Internet sometimes as it distracts us.
( )31.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage
A.Are our attention spans getting shorter
B.How do we live with the Internet
C.Is multitasking possible
D.What can we do to make our attention spans longer

A working semiconductor(半导体) has been created from graphene(石墨烯), potentially laying the foundation for a new type of computer with greater speed and efficiency than today’s silicon chips(硅片) allow.
Graphene, a material made from a single layer of carbon atoms, is a good electrical conductor resistant to heat and acids. But a working graphene semiconductor which can be controlled to conduct or separate electricity at will, has evaded scientists. Such semiconductors are key to creating the logic chips that power computers.
The problem has been the lack of what is known as a bandgap. Semiconductors have bands of higher and lower energy and a point—the bandgap—at which excited electrons can jump from one to the other. This effectively allows the flow of current to be switched on and off, so it is either conducting or not conducting, creating the binary system of zeros and ones used in digital computers.
Now, Walter de Heer at the Georgia Institute of Technology and his colleagues have created graphene with a bandgap and demonstrated a working transistor, an on/off switch that either prevents or allows current to flow through it. De Heer said the electrical properties of a graphene semiconductor were far better than those of silicon chips. “It’s like driving on a rocky road versus driving on a freeway,” he said.
Silicon chips are cheap to make and backed by extensive production facilities, but we are reaching their limits. Moore’s law states the number of transistors in a circuit will double roughly every two years, but the rate of downsizing has slowed recently as engineers reach circuit concentration beyond which electrons can’t be reliably controlled.
“You can use all the technology the whole semiconductor industry is totally comfortable with to scale up this process,” says David Carey at the University of Surrey, UK. But he is sceptical about the view that the world will soon shift to graphene chips, because silicon has such a head start. “Most people working on silicon are bombarded(提供大量信息) daily by new, wonderful materials that are about to replace it and none of it’s ever happened,” he says.
( )32.What does the underlined word “evaded” probably mean in Paragraph 2
A.Surprised. B.Attracted.
C.Annoyed. D.Puzzled.
( )33.Why is a bandgap crucial
A.It excites the jump of electrons.
B.It creates the system of zeros and ones.
C.It balances the higher and lower energy.
D.It allows the on and off of the current flow.
( )34.What advantage might graphene semiconductors have over silicon chips
A.Superior electrical characteristics.
B.Stronger production support.
C.Lower development cost.
D.Slower downsizing rate.
( )35.What may be David’s attitude to graphene chips’ application in the near future
A.Uncaring. B.Favourable.
C.Doubtful. D.Disapproving.

Whether you’re looking to lose a few pounds, spend more time at the gym or learn a language, turning bad habits into good ones is all about self-control. Some of us have more than others. And research shows that those with more self-control tend to be happier. But the problem is that we usually only get rewarded in the future. 36.
Michael Inzlicht is a professor of psychology at the University of Toronto and a self-control researcher. He says that the ironic thing about self-control is that those who are really good at it don’t have to practise it. 37. When you love and desire something that tends to be better for you, like studying, working hard or exercising, for example, you don’t have to think about doing it. Inzlicht says that these types of individuals generally have what’s called “trait self-control” meaning it’s an aspect of their personality.
When it comes to improving self-control, Inzlicht says it’s difficult to change the personality that you’re born with. 38. A wide body of research shows that you can improve self-control for a particular behaviour you want to change or a habit you’d like to develop. For example, Inzlicht says that when we get paid to make life changes, we’re more likely to make them. Some gyms will charge you a certain amount of money for a year-long membership and then give you a few cents back every time you come. 39.
40. Part of failing at developing self-control is in getting frustrated at yourself for not changing overnight. If you’re building self-control in losing weight, for instance, don’t try switching to nothing but fruits and vegetables all at once because it’s too dramatic a change—not to mention unsustainable.
A.However, this doesn’t mean you can do nothing about it.
B.Another tip for success, says Inzlicht, is making gradual steps.
C.Even a small amount of money can encourage people to work out.
D.They can maintain the good habits all the time without much effort.
E.Thus, we are constantly weighing whether to wait or to have it right now.
F.Don’t be afraid of frustration since it is necessary for your improvement.
G.Actually, self-control improvement can bring about benefits to all individuals.

Seeing the United Parcel Truck pull into my driveway, I opened the garage door knowing that another package had arrived helping us with the Christmas in July Party we were putting together for the homeless children at a local charity.
As I stood watching the driver get the packages from the back of the truck, I saw Madison, my three-year-old granddaughter, picking weeds from the lawn. “These are for my mummy and daddy,” she said, as she held out a hand full of worthless little weeds. I just smiled and nodded my head as I looked at her tight little closed fist.
The UPT driver walked into the garage and put the two packages on the wooden bench. He and I stood talking about the numerous baseball gloves, baseball bats, helmets and baseballs sitting about the room. I told him I had been raised in a Jacksonville, Florida orphanage and that during my entire childhood I never once owned anything of my own. I told him that these presents were for the children themselves and not for the orphanage.
After talking for a few minutes, the driver told me he had to leave. He waved and began walking back down the driveway. I turned around, locked the garage door and began walking up onto the front porch. Just as I closed the gate, Madison came running up to where I was standing.
“My flowers, my flowers,” she screamed aloud. I soon realized that I had locked her weeds in the garage.
