M: Jack is looking forward to getting a new T-shirt for his birthday.
W: Well, Mary will buy a new school bag for him and Tim will get him a new watch.
M: Nice! I’m looking forward to my birthday!
W: Yes, I’m sure you will get many nice gifts too.
Text 2
M: What a beautiful painting! Where did you buy it
W: Actually, I made it in my grandpa’s yard.
M: Really That’s amazing! I had no idea you were so talented. This looks like it was painted by a professional.
Text 3
M: Excuse me, can we leave our backpack and suitcase here
W: OK. That’s 4 dollars for the suitcase and 3 dollars for the backpack.
M: Fine, thanks. We’ll come and get them around 2 this afternoon.
Text 4
M: If it were not for the price, I would like to move somewhere with a nicer view than we have here.
W: But for me, the most important thing is to have large bedrooms and a good-sized kitchen.
Text 5
W: Nick Jones! Is that you We studied French and German together in Professor Brown’s class. Remember We always sat next to each other.
M: Anne White! Of course I remember. Anne, long time no see!
Text 6
W: Excuse me. I was wondering if anyone has turned in a passport. I can’t find mine anywhere in my hotel room and I remember the last place where I used it yesterday was in this department store. I had to show it to pay for those shoes with my traveller’s cheques.
M: Let me check. Sorry, your passport hasn’t turned up here either.
W: What shall I do
M: You can fill in this form to declare your loss first, then make a phone call to your embassy and tell them about your situation, so that they can give you a new passport in case it doesn’t show up.
W: You are right.
Text 7
M: Good morning. Since so many of you have asked me how to learn a language, I thought it might be useful to take some class time today to discuss it. Betty, you speak several foreign languages, don’t you
W: Yes, I speak Spanish and French.
M: And can you tell me what helped you most in learning these languages
W: Well, I studied both languages in high school, and I’m still studying Spanish here at the university. But I think travel has probably been the most helpful to me.
M: Yes. When you live in a country where the language you are learning is spoken, it’s perfect.
W: That’s true. But whether or not I’m living in a country where the language is spoken, I always watch TV or listen to the radio in the language I’m trying to learn.
M: That’s good.
Text 8
M: Tina, I’m sorry to bother you, but I’m afraid there is a big problem.
W: Oh, what’s up then
M: You told me last week that you would deal with the faulty desks returned by HDC, one of our local customers.
W: Yes, that’s right, I did send them the replacements for all the desks last Monday.
M: Well, the thing is, did you realize there were two kinds of faulty desks The customer only received one kind of desks.
W: Oh dear. I didn’t realize there were two kinds. I’ll send them the other kind right away.
M: The problem is that now they want to get their money back.
W: Oh dear, that’s really bad. I’ll phone them now and explain everything. I’m really sorry about this.
M: That’s all right. There’s still time to solve the problem. I think it would be best to visit them and explain the mistake face to face.
W: Okay. I’ll make arrangements and visit them as soon as possible. Sorry again.
Text 9
M: Well, Stella, why do you look unhappy
W: Oh, Bill, I have just had a quarrel with Mr Philips.
M: What on earth was it about
W: Well, I have made three bad mistakes so far this week. Today I forgot to give him an important message, so he got really angry with me.
M: But I don’t understand. You are usually very careful.
W: I’m just so tired.
M: Why Have you been going to bed late these days
W: No. I’m usually in bed at about eleven. But I’ve been woken up early every morning.
M: Why
W: It’s my new neighbour. He has to get up at half past four and he always turns the radio on loudly.
M: Ask him to turn it down or if you don’t want to see him, write him a letter.
W: Do you think it’s a good idea
M: Yes, I do. I’ll help you with the letter.
W: OK. Let’s try.
Text 10
W: What’s the attraction of coffee shops It’s been said that J.K. Rowling wrote the Harry Potter books sitting in one in Edinburgh. But you’re spending all day buying one expensive coffee after another and haven’t sold your first novel yet, the costs can really add up. For those who work outside of a traditional office or just want to take time out, there’s a new alternative in London: a pay-per-minute cafe. You’ll be given a clock when you come in to keep time. When you leave, you return the item and pay the bill. The cost of hanging out, eating, working and meeting new people in the place is 3 pennies per minute or £1.80 an hour. Customers help themselves to coffee and cookies. They can also bring their own food to eat while accessing the Internet through Wi-Fi. The new coffee shop’s atmosphere is relaxing. The shop’s owner, Ivan Meetin, believes his coffee shop is a bit like “social media”, but with a face. Like-minded people go there to socialize. Some feel so much at home that they wash the dishes. The concept of coffee shops, where you pay for the time and not for the cup, has proved popular in Russia. Only time will tell if the British will warm to the idea.

根据EcoYoga Argyll, Scotland部分中“Anyone wishing to holiday without the carbon footprint should seriously consider retreating to EcoYoga Argyll in the dazzling Scottish countryside.” 故选A项。
根据Arvon Writers’ Retreat, Shropshire部分中“And, as frustrating as this may be, it’s not always the fault of the writer—what’s really needed is a little encouragement and relaxation. Simplicity is the key with this retreat. Delicious meals are provided and are enjoyed with other writers, luxurious yet understated bedrooms will inspire rather than distract you and the workshop and library will give you pockets of inventive vision every time you venture in.”
根据第一段中“Whether you’re longing for well-being, meditation or a new outlook on life, these are the best British holiday retreats for immersing yourself and refreshing your soul.” 故选A项。
B
根据第一段中“For some folks, hiking is an activity done for a couple of miles at a time. But for others, it is a lifestyle.”
根据第一段中“It is a tough journey with a low completion rate. Just 14% of all hikers attempting a ‘thru-hike’ have succeeded in finishing the PCT.”(这是一段艰难的旅程,完成率很低。 和第二段中“The hike’s reputation is what makes Pa’at’s completion of the journey more extraordinary.”(这个徒步旅行的名声使Pa’at完成这次旅行更加不同寻常。)以及“Not many people can say they’ve finished such an amazing feat, especially not at 71!”(没有多少人能说他们完成了如此惊人的壮举,尤其是在71岁的时候!)
根据第四段“For anyone who has ever dreamed of hiking the PCT, Pa’at’s feat is proof that they aren’t too late. ‘I’ve wanted to walk this trail for a long time,’ someone posted online, ‘but now I know even if I don’t get it in my twenties or thirties, I can still try again. Of course, I can challenge what I lacked courage to do in the past.’”
根据最后一段中“We both thank him for being such an inspiration to us.”
根据第二段“In watching the cardinals and other birds, she found relief. Soon she started bringing her students along. ‘My students stared at me in disbelief when I told them I had never cared about birds before,’ Kane writes. ‘I suddenly wondered how many creatures would die because of the way we lived.’ She decided to pursue an environmentally-conscious career.”
根据第三段“Her activism snowballed…It eventually became part of Kane’s doctoral research, and launched a birding class that pairs middle school students with college-student advisors.”
根据倒数第二段“Take Jeremy, a seemingly uninterested boy in Kane’s birding class. When reporters joined an outing, the normally quiet Jeremy started talking excitedly about the bunting, a small blue bird. Kane soon learned that he had secretly taken to studying the field guide given to him by his advisor.”
根据最后一段“In her case, it is liberation from the grief and depression that the hurricane brought. ‘Bird by bird, they carve a new pathway in my life, a joyful pathway.’”
根据第一段“Without ready access to a time machine, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have built an AI-powered chatbot that simulates (模拟) a user’s older self and dishes out observations and wisdom. It has the potential to significantly impact how people make decisions today with their future well-being in mind.”
根据第三段“Next, the program feeds information from the user’s answers to a large language model that generates rich synthetic (合成的) memories for the simulated older self. This ensures that when the chatbot responds to questions, it draws on a relevant backstory.”
根据前文“Pataranutaporn, who works on the Future You project at MIT’s Media Lab, has had several conversations with his ‘future self’, but said the most profound (深刻的) was when the chatbot reminded him that his parents would not be around for ever, so he should spend time with them while he could.”
根据最后一段“‘From a practical standpoint, the effectiveness will likely depend on how well it can simulate meaningful and relevant conversations,’ he added. ‘If users perceive the chatbot as genuine and insightful, it could significantly influence their behaviour. However, if the interactions feel shallow, the impact might be limited.’” 故选A项。
36.C 前文“Organizing your room can help you feel calmer and in control of your life. Going about your day will be much easier if you know exactly where everything is. You will not have to waste time searching for your favourite pairs of jeans.”
37.E 前文“Take all of your belongings out of their current locations.”建议拿出所有东西,后文“…but if you really want to organize your room, you will have to start from the beginning. Though you may be surprised by the giant pile of mess you’ve created on your floor, desk or bed, don’t worry.” E项“这可能看起来很痛苦,好像你正在制造更大的混乱”符合语境,承上启下,其中的this指代前一句内容,a bigger mess和后文的the giant pile of mess呼应。故选E。
38.G 前文“Before you begin to figure out where everything should go, you should get a number of boxes for different purposes. Boxes are best because you can just recycle them when you’re done organizing and won’t have to deal with more things.”
39.A 前文“You need to do some searches to figure out what you really need in your room right there where you spend your time.”建议思考自己真正需要的东西,后文“The less things you have, the easier it will be to organize your bedroom.” 故选A。
40.B 根据后文“Now that you’ve organized your room, you can begin to get rid of all the things you don’t need, throw away the Rubbish box and give the Donate box to the charity organization. The sooner you get rid of or store the other boxes, the easier it will be to move on with your organization.”

One possible version:
Dear Mike,
I’m writing to share with you my recent experience in a labour activity on a farm.
Last Saturday was May Day, when my class participated in the labour practice held in our school. At dawn, we cycled to the farm. On arrival, we were shown around by our teacher and then assigned different tasks. Under the teacher’s patient instructions, we turned over the soil, weeded, planted vegetables like tomatoes and eggplants and watered them. Looking at lines of young green vegetables, the teacher cheerfully said we’d enjoy our self-grown vegetables soon, which filled us with a sense of achievement.
The meaningful activity offered us a chance to learn about farming. Besides, though tired, I did feel the pleasure and value of labour.
Yours,
Li Hua
One possible version:
They decided to thank Leo by visiting his house. One neighbour offered to push Abigail’s wheelchair on the sidewalk. When they arrived, Leo was still asleep. He was awakened by a choir of voices calling out his name from outside. Leo was frightened, thinking he might have done something wrong. He tried to recall whether or not he had done something to anger his neighbours, but he could not remember anything.
When he opened his front door, Leo was surprised to see his neighbours bearing gifts. They handed him pastries, fruits and a huge pie. “We’re here to thank you, dear. Thank you for helping me clean my yard,” Abigail said, reaching out to touch Leo’s hands. Other neighbours chimed in, thanking him for reminding them what it meant to be a good neighbour. “You helped Abigail out when none of us did. Thank you for reminding us to be mindful of what other people are going through so we can help where we can,” one of them told Leo.

For some folks, hiking is an activity done for a couple of miles at a time. But for others, it is a lifestyle. Those who hike the Pacific Crest Trail(PCT) fall into the latter. The PCT is 2,650 miles. Along the way, hikers walk through the desert, up mountains and then cross seven national parks. It is a tough journey with a low completion rate. Just 14% of all hikers attempting a “thru-hike” have succeeded in finishing the PCT.
The hike’s reputation is what makes Pa’at’s completion of the journey more extraordinary. The hiker known as Pa’at, an old man, finished the last bit of the PCT with two younger hikers, Auti and Chris. They celebrated Pa’at’s success via an online post. They wrote, “Not many people can say they’ve finished such an amazing feat, especially not at 71!”
Pa’at approached the trail-end marker and touched it, amazed that he had made it to the end. He said, “I know there were different troubles that I needed to overcome, but I had confidence in myself before I set off.” And then he sang, “I’ve been waiting…such a long time. Walking such a long way. Such a long way…just to be here.”
For anyone who has ever dreamed of hiking the PCT, Pa’at’s feat is proof that they aren’t too late. “I’ve wanted to walk this trail for a long time,” someone posted online, “but now I know even if I don’t get it in my twenties or thirties, I can still try again. Of course, I can challenge what I lacked courage to do in the past.”
Auti and Chris met Pa’at a few days before finishing. They said, “Pa’at is one of those people you instantly feel like you’ve known a lifetime. He has a heart of gold, the kindest soul, and unmatched optimism and courage. We both thank him for being such an inspiration to us.”

A “spark bird” is the species that inspires someone to start birdwatching, namely birding. For Trish Kane, that bird was the cardinal Hearing cardinals’ calls was an initial step towards over 1,960 hours of birding, 33 field notebooks and a career change. In her book, Birding to Change the World, Kane charts her transformation from a journalist to an environmentalist.
In 2005, a terrible hurricane hit Kane’s hometown. After it, she had to cope with the loss of her home. In watching the cardinals and other birds, she found relief. Soon she started bringing her students along. “My students stared at me in disbelief when I told them I had never cared about birds before,” Kane writes. “I suddenly wondered how many creatures would die because of the way we lived.” She decided to pursue an environmentally conscious career. In 2007, she took a course to study environmental science.
Most of the book focuses on Kane’s efforts to preserve Warner Park, an ideal location satisfying birding requirements for her class. She successfully campaigned to stop the construction of a parking lot. Her activism snowballed into a local birdwatching and protecting organization. It eventually became part of Kane’s doctoral research, and launched a birding class that pairs middle school students with college-student advisors.
The book shows readers that a good knowledge of nature doesn’t require a degree. Take Jeremy, a seemingly uninterested boy in Kane’s birding class. When reporters joined an outing, the normally quiet Jeremy started talking excitedly about the bunting, a small blue bird. Kane soon learned that he had secretly taken to studying the field guide given to him by his advisor.
At its core, Birding to Change the World is about how people and birds today depend on one another. “For birds, that dependence is concrete. For thousands of years, our species has seen birds as a symbol of liberation,” Kane writes. In her case, it is liberation from the grief and depression that the hurricane brought. “Bird by bird, they carve a new pathway in my life, a joyful pathway.”
( )28.What made Kane pursue an environmentalist career
A.Her guilt about the serious harm to birds.
B.The desire to guide students to go birding.
C.The comfort from birding after the disaster.
D.Her students’ disbelief in her ignorance of birds.
( )29.What can we learn about Kane from Paragraph 3
A.She worked hard on her latest book.
B.She protected Warner Park on her own.
C.Her birding class consisted of advisors.
D.Her activism led to positive chain effects.
( )30.What does Jeremy’s experience suggest
A.Interest in nature differs between kids and adults.
B.Children learn more from nature than from books.
C.Children are born curious about outdoor activities.
D.Potential in kids can be released with the proper guide.
( )31.Which is the best title for the text
A.A joyful experience of birding
B.The transformative power of birding
C.A life journey of an environmentalist
D.The self-appreciation of a book writer

Without ready access to a time machine, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have built an AI-powered chatbot that simulates (模拟) a user’s older self and dishes out observations and wisdom. It has the potential to significantly impact how people make decisions today with their future well-being in mind.
To interact with the chatbot, users are first asked to answer a series of questions about themselves, their friends and family, the past experiences that shaped them, and the ideal life they envision for the future. They then upload a portrait image, which the program digitally ages to produce a likeness of the user aged 60.
Next, the program feeds information from the user’s answers to a large language model that generates rich synthetic (合成的) memories for the simulated older self. This ensures that when the chatbot responds to questions, it draws on a relevant backstory.
The final part of the system is the chatbot itself, powered by OpenAI’s GPT-3.5, which introduces itself as a potential older version of the user that is able to talk about its life experiences.
Users are told the “future self” is not a prediction but rather a potential future self. They are encouraged to explore different futures by changing their answers to the questionnaire.
Pataranutaporn, who works on the Future You project at MIT’s Media Lab, has had several conversations with his “future self”, but said the most profound (深刻的) was when the chatbot reminded him that his parents would not be around for ever, so he should spend time with them while he could. “The session gave me a perspective that is still impactful to me to this day,” he said.
“From a practical standpoint, the effectiveness will likely depend on how well it can simulate meaningful and relevant conversations,” he added. “If users perceive the chatbot as genuine and insightful, it could significantly influence their behaviour. However, if the interactions feel shallow, the impact might be limited.”
( )32.What can the “future self” chatbot help its users do
A.Improve their welfare.
B.Inspire wise life choices.
C.Polish their future selves.
D.Get access to a time machine.
( )33.What is crucial to the production of an older version of the users
A.Their portrait image.
B.Their memory ability.
C.The information provided.
D.The language model employed.
( )34.What does the underlined word “session” in Paragraph 6 refer to
A.Pataranutaporn’s work at MIT’s Media Lab.
B.The good old days of Pataranutaporn’s parents.
C.The precious time Pataranutaporn spent with his parents.
D.Pataranutaporn’s most profound talk with his “future self”.
( )35.How does Pataranutaporn comment on the effectiveness of the chatbot
A.It depends.
B.It doesn’t last long.
C.It will be carefully checked.
D.It will be disastrous.

During winter, Leo noticed that of all the houses on the block, there was one with a messy, dirty yard that looked unattended. One day, after all the snow had melted and the trees were starting to bloom (开花) just in time for spring, Leo couldn’t help but stare at his neighbour’s messy yard a little longer. The melted snow showed all the buried leaves and other trash.
He went back home and brought the tools he needed. It took Leo the entire afternoon to clear the yard. He moved the melting snow out of the pathway and swept the leaves from the ground. He also trimmed (修剪) the bushes and left them as neat as he could.
The following morning the old woman, Abigail, opened her door with joy. She had quietly watched the young man clean up the yard the day before, much to her relief.
Abigail had not left her house in months. She relied totally on her caregiver for her basic needs and was eager to get fresh air. After sitting in her wheelchair in her front yard for a couple of minutes, her neighbours started to notice her. They walked towards her to say hi, and soon, the crowd grew.
“It’s so lovely to see you outdoors, Abigail! How have you been ” one of them asked.
“I’m so happy to be breathing some fresh air for a change. I couldn’t leave the house for months because of the snow. It was too deep, and I couldn’t afford to hire someone to help me with it,” Abigail admitted.
“But yesterday, I saw a kind young man cleaning my yard the entire afternoon. I wanted to thank him, but I had no food to offer him because my caregiver had not arrived yet,” she shared. “He was such a blessing. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw him!”
When Abigail praised the “kind young man” who helped her, they immediately knew it was Leo. The neighbours looked at each other, with guilt all over their faces. They realized they had been so blind to Abigail’s problems that no one thought to help her by cleaning her yard.
Paragraph 1:
They decided to thank Leo by visiting his house.
Paragraph 2:
When he opened his front door, Leo was surprised to see his neighbours bearing gifts.
