Text 1
W: What a memory I have! I did write down Mr Smith’s e-mail address on a piece of paper, but now it is nowhere to be found!
M: Don’t worry. I’ll be seeing him in an hour. I can ask him for his e-mail address when I see him.
Text 2
W: Good morning, I have an appointment with Diane Kennedy at 11 o’clock. And I’m Jane Taylor.
M: Oh, she’s answering a call now. Can you complete this security form, please
W: Of course. Can you give me a pen
Text 3
W: Have you read this new best-seller by Mike Brooklyn
M: No, I haven’t. I’m not really into fiction.
W: I think you’d like this one—it’s a very fast paced adventure, and Brooklyn has a wild imagination.
M: Really Maybe I’ll try to read it when I’m on vacation.
Text 4
M: Can you change the room for me It’s too noisy.
W: Sorry, we don’t have any spare room today. Could you wait till tomorrow The American People-to-People Education Delegation will be leaving tomorrow morning.
Text 5
W: Do you have plans this weekend
M: Yes, it is my daughter’s birthday. We will have a barbecue.
W: Sweet, tell her happy birthday! I think my daughter will buy her a nice present.
Text 6
W: I’m calling to confirm my flight to New York this Saturday. My name is Jane Austin, and my flight number is K701.
M: Yes, Ms Austin. Your name is here in our computer. Your plane takes off at 9:00 am. And I’d like to remind you to please come to the airport two hours before your take-off time to get your seating arrangements.
W: Thank you. By the way, could you tell me once again how long my flight will be
M: The total number of hours is 16 hours because you have a two-hour stopover at Los Angeles Airport.
Text 7
W: Oh, it’s so nice to be out of the cinema. It was so hot there!
M: Terrible, wasn’t it Well, what did you think of Madame Curie Do you think it is as good as the reviews said
W: It’s a good film, but not as good as the book. I think some parts of the story were missing in the film.
M: Yes, but you couldn’t possibly fit everything that happens in a 200-page novel into a 2-hour film.
W: I know. But the director should at least try to follow the story. In this film he left out some important people and even changed the ending.
M: Well, perhaps he thought he was improving the story, Karen.
W: Perhaps he did, but I just don’t think a film director has the right.
Text 8
W: Which colour do you think I should wear to meet the client
M: What You’ve been picking out the clothes since 8:00. Twenty minutes have passed and you still haven’t made a choice
W: You know I always have problems making decisions.
M: Before we went on our trip last month, you had been thinking a lot about where to travel. Yesterday you spent a long time thinking about whether to have a hotpot or barbecue.
W: It does often take me a long time to make a decision, but only by comparison can I know what is right and what is wrong. The more I care about things, the more I struggle to choose.
M: Hmm…It doesn’t matter what is right or wrong because there is no absolute right or wrong in life. You never know which is suitable unless you try it. So spending a long time making decisions doesn’t make sense.
W: OK, OK. Stop here.
M: Sure. I’ll drive Tom to school first.
Text 9
M: You need a break. You’ve been cooking every night. I’m sorry I haven’t been helping out, but I’ve had to work late all month. Let’s go out to dinner tonight.
W: That would be wonderful.
M: I’ve heard of a new Indian restaurant downtown. How does that sound
W: You know I love Indian food!
M: Well, this place should be very good. The food is more like traditional cooking—like what Indian mothers would make at home.
W: Sounds good! I had a friend in college who was from India. Sometimes I would go over to her house on the weekend. Her grandmother would cook for us. It was probably the tastiest food I’ve ever had!
M: All right, then let’s go. The place closes at 8:30, so we’d better leave now. It’ll take about half an hour to get there, because we’ll have to find a parking place, too.
W: I wonder why the restaurant closes so early. It’s a Friday night. Restaurants are usually open late on weekends.
M: I’ll bet the cook is an Indian mother who needs to get home to her children!
Text 10
W: And now, finally, the time has come to announce the winner of our art competition. I know you’re all excited to be here and looking forward to finding out the first-prize winner who will be awarded the opportunity to display their art in exhibitions at our art galleries across the country, as well as the $5,000 cash prize. We’ll also announce the lucky runner-up, who will be going home with a $1,000 cash prize. Before I start, I have to tell you that one of the contestants, Rose O’Brien, has decided to remove herself from the competition as she was offered an opportunity elsewhere—which is not surprising, considering she had the second highest score given by the judges. But let’s focus on our remaining three contestants: Maria Sanchez, John Krakow and Donald Wreck. All of them deserve recognition and congratulations for making it this far. It has been a very tough competition with more than a thousand entries, so you should all be very proud of yourselves. So, after counting the votes from our gallery’s members and combining them with the judges’ scores, we are happy to announce that the winner of the competition is…Oh, wow…Incredibly, the winner is our youngest contestant, with no formal art training…Congratulations to Donald Wreck, with My Sister Emily!

根据第一段“It argued that reducing food-related waste,in particular—is an expensive effort and a near impossibility for anyone taking low-wage jobs with little extra time.”及“Zero waste is something only suitable for people who can afford it, not for those who are struggling to get by.”
根据第二段“The goal, after all, is to make smarter shopping decisions and establish practices that are sustainable for us, with our own unique resources and living situations.”
根据第四段“That lasted a few weeks before I gave up. Unlike her, I still had babies to look after, and I did not live in San Francisco where stores are closer together than in rural Ontario.” 故选A项。
因此,B项“Forget zero waste and be better shoppers”(忘记零垃圾,做更好的购物者)最适合做文章的标题。

根据下文内容“It is natural to enjoy praise and be hurt by critical opinions. But you need to live your own life and do what is right for you rather than being pushed about by other people’s views on what you should be doing. Always chasing other people’s approval limits your choices to following what is best for you.”
39.G 根据上文“Not all criticism is helpful—you are clumsy, for example, labels the person without offering any hint for improvement. Constructive criticism contains suggestions for improved performance and is vital to your learning. For example…”

One possible version:
Students’ voluntary work in a community
Last Saturday witnessed a voluntary activity organized by the Students’ Union in the nearby community themed on “Step into the community and serve everyone”, which was well received by the neighbourhood.
The event was filled with meaningful activities. The voluntary work started from nine o’clock, lasting for three hours. Upon our arrival at the local community centre, we began to conduct different tasks. Not only did we clean public spaces, but also we assisted the elderly with their daily tasks. Additionally, we organized a health awareness campaign, educating residents on healthy living habits.
All the students involved participated with great enthusiasm. I deeply realized the significance of community engagement and the fulfilment voluntary work brings.
One possible version:
Alex remembered the survival skills he had learned in the survival classes. He quickly gathered fallen branches and dry leaves to create a small fire. Using the flint, he struck it against a rock until a spark ignited the tinder. The flickering light illuminated the darkness, giving Jake some sense of comfort. Alex then led Jake to a safe spot where they could wait for the rescue team. The boys talked quietly, sharing stories and jokes to keep their spirits up. Alex told Jake that no one was better than anyone else, just different, and that being kind to others was more important than being clever.
Alex looked at Jake, surprised but touched by the sincerity in his voice. He had never seen Jake so vulnerable or humble. Jake thanked Alex for finding him and apologized for his past bullying. He promised to be a better friend from then on. Alex nodded, accepting the apology with a smile. As the night deepened, the boys heard the distant sound of rescue helicopters. They cheered and waved their arms, signalling their location. As they were reunited with their classmates and teachers, Alex felt a sense of accomplishment washing over him. He had not only survived the ordeal, but he had also helped someone in need, and in doing so, had gained a true friend.

Slobodchikoff, a biologist who has spent years working to better understand the calls of dogs, used that knowledge to help people who were having trouble with their pets.
A man reported his dog wanted to bite him. So Slobodchikoff went to the man’s house. He watched as the owner walked over to the dog, towered over the pet and then said, “Good dog!” in a low-pitched (低沉的) voice. “The dog ran into a corner,” Slobodchikoff recalled. The owner had scared the dog. Slobodchikoff recommended that the man should do the opposite. The owner took that advice—and ended up developing a great relationship with his pet.
Not everyone has the time to study dog communication or the money to bring in an expert. Slobodchikoff thinks tech could help. He thinks a cellphone app or device that you could point at a dog. This would record video and audio(音频) of a dog’s behaviour and then upload it.An artificial intelligence(AI)system would later analyse it.
“The AI would translate this for you into English or any other language,” says Slobodchikoff. The result, he explains, may be something like “I’m hungry” or “I need to go outside to pee” or “I want to go for a walk”.
To train the AI system, Slobodchikoff planned to get data directly from pet dogs, but for some reason, he hasn’t yet restarted the project to date, but hopes to soon.
Search an app store for a pet translator and you’ll find plenty. Some are completely unscientific and silly. MeowTalk, however, is a cat-translation app based on an AI model. In 2021, its creators reported that the AI model achieved 90 percent accuracy at identifying nine different emotional states in meows. These included anger, happiness, hunting, pain and rest. The app picks conversational phrases based on these emotions, like “nice to see you” or “let me rest”.
People who have tried the app say it doesn’t always work well. But better translations of barks and meows may be just around the corner.

Humpback whales are well known for their fascinating culture: these mysterious animals migrate thousands of miles every year, sing charming songs, leap from the water in an enormous breach, and collaborate while hunting—creating bubble nets that trap their prey. Now, researchers have shed light on another aspect of whale behaviour: playing with kelp (巨藻) they find floating in the ocean—moving it between their fins, rolling around with it, and, most interestingly, wearing it atop their heads like a hat.
This behaviour—called kelping—has been described in a new study as a “global phenomenon”. There’s no doubt that kelping looks fun. But could it have another purpose Olaf Meynecke, a research fellow at Griffith University and co-author of the study, thinks so—especially considering that whales can keep it up for 30 to 40 minutes.
What’s particularly intriguing about kelping is the way that humpbacks from different populations—in both the northern and southern hemispheres—all prefer to wear seaweed on the top of their heads, says Meynecke. They place kelp on their forehead in over half the recorded instances. Baleen species are believed to like having their heads scratched—grey whales are known for approaching whale watching boats for a tickle on the nose. Because whales don’t have hands to scratch themselves, like we do, Meynecke suggests they might seek out other tactile sensations that just feel good.
Whales might also be treating kelp like a cleansing face mask, as seaweed has antimicrobial qualities that can reduce levels of bacteria. Rubbing kelp across their bodies may also remove parasites (寄生物) and shed bacterial and viral growths to prevent them getting completely overgrown with sea lice (虱) and skin infections, says Meynecke.
The study has caught the attention of researchers globally, and Meynecke’s mailbox has been flooded with people who have also seen kelping. “Someone from Tahiti was like, ‘We see it all the time,’” he says. Now the phenomenon has been highlighted globally, which could lead to further research into the behaviour, its benefits, and even if other species do it.

A colleague recently sent me an article, “Cutting back on waste is possible—if you can afford it”, to read. It argued that reducing food-related waste, in particular—is an expensive effort and a near impossibility for anyone taking low-wage jobs with little extra time. The conclusion Zero waste is something only suitable for people who can afford it, not for those who are struggling to get by.
However, I take issue about the idea that zero waste must be all or nothing. I think this is an unfortunate mentality that prevents valuable progress towards reducing one’s food-related waste. When we get too hung up on the idea of so-called zero waste and of being like the zero waste superstar Bea Johnson who can fit years of trash in a single jar, we start missing the broader point. The goal, after all, is to make smarter shopping decisions and establish practices that are sustainable for us, with our own unique resources and living situations.
I live in a small rural town with no fancy zero-waste stores. My husband and I both work full-time. I am uninterested in spending my free time doing DIY projects and driving from store to store in search of perfect packaging. Instead, I just do the best I can.
When I first read about Bea Johnson’s multi-stop grocery shopping routine, I tried to copy it. That lasted a few weeks before I gave up. Unlike her, I still had babies to look after, and I did not live in San Francisco where stores are closer together than in rural Ontario. Instead, I’ve resigned myself to the supermarket being the main supply of food and trying to work with it.
Now, when I enter the supermarket on a once-weekly basis, I view all packaging through a critical eye. I make constant comparisons of how one brand packages its food to another. That is the main factor in deciding what to buy, though I also consider the unit price, the origin and the ingredients.
( )32.What is the idea of the article recommended by the author’s colleague
A.Most people can afford zero waste.
B.Food-related waste is unavoidable.
C.Cutting back on waste costs much.
D.The poor care little about food waste.
( )33.How does the author understand the concept of zero waste
A.It is related to recycling our resources.
B.It prevents people from reducing waste.
C.It means fitting your trash in a single jar.
D.It encourages reasonable green practices.
( )34.Why did the author fail to follow Bea Johnson
A.Her living situations differed from hers.
B.She hardly knew about food packaging.
C.She didn’t receive her husband’s support.
D.Her love for shopping was deeply rooted.
( )35.What’s the best title of the text
A.Live in a small town for a zero-waste life
B.Forget zero waste and be better shoppers
C.Take advantage of local zero-waste shops
D.Stop wasting and build a greener society

Alex is a 10-year-old boy who lives in the quiet Canadian town of Willowbrook. Despite coming from a family with little money, he was enthusiastic about learning and did well in his subjects. His mother, who worked as a nurse, is a living example of self-sufficiency and was his biggest supporter after his father left them.
One of his classmates, Jake, who comes from a better-off family and thinks himself cleverer than any other person, always makes cruel jokes about Alex’s worn-out trainers and second-hand jacket at school. Although he sometimes feels depressed, Alex never lets this stop him from loving school and doing his best.
One afternoon, during a survival skill class at school, Alex listened attentively as the teacher, Mr Brown, an experienced outdoorsman, showed the class how to make a spark from a flint (打火石). “In survival situations,” the teacher said, “it’s not just about the physical, it’s about the mental strength to keep going.” Alex took these words to heart, his eyes shining with interest.
On a school trip to the nearby forest, Alex and his classmates, including Jake, went on a hike. As the group went deeper into the forest, the undergrowth grew thicker and Alex found himself separated from the others. But it was Jake who really got lost. He wandered off the trail because he was proud and wanted to prove that he could navigate the forest on his own.
As evening approached, Jake’s confidence began to slip and he found himself alone in the dark. Panic began to set in. He felt remorseful (懊悔的) and helpless and began to call for help in a shaky voice. That’s when Alex, who had been looking for a way back to the trail, found him. Jake, who was usually the one to make fun of him, was now standing there, looking humble and scared. His pride had been replaced by a look of concern.
“Hey, Jake, it’s going to be OK,” Alex said, his voice calm and reassuring. “We’ll get through this together.”
Paragraph 1:
Alex remembered the survival skills he had learned in the survival classes.
Paragraph 2:
Alex looked at Jake, surprised but touched by the sincerity in his voice.
