Text 1
W: Would you prefer tea or coffee
M: I think a glass of cold water would be best. There is nothing like it when the weather is so hot.
Text 2
W: Oh, dear, I have locked the key in my room again. How I wish I could remember it!
M: Well, don’t worry. These things happen a lot.
W: What can we do now
M: Dial 911.
Text 3
W: My computer is running so slowly that I want to get a new one.
M: There’s a new computer coming out in early September.
W: Oh, no. I’m unwilling to wait three months. I’ll buy one next month.
Text 4
W: Hey, Mike. Why the long face
M: Well, it’s the speech contest. I thought I would win, but…
W: Cheer up, Mike. You’ve tried your best after all.
Text 5
W: Could you push the button for the tenth floor, please
M: Of course. Do you live in this building
W: No, I’m just visiting a colleague from work. She has an apartment on the tenth floor. Do you live here
M: Yes, I do. It’s not a bad building to live in, really.
Text 6
W: Excuse me. Do you think I can return this coat
M: What’s the problem with it
W: It’s too small.
M: OK. I see. I’m afraid I can’t give you a cash return, but you can change it.
W: I believe you sell it for $49.95.
M: Yes. I’ll take the coats of the same price for you to choose from.
W: That one looks nice. May I have a try
M: It’s $55.95. If you want it, you’ll pay some extra money.
W: OK. I will.
Text 7
M: I dropped the accounting class in college. Now I regret that. After graduation, I’ve been trying to find a job in accounting, but so far I haven’t succeeded.
W: It’s really difficult to find an ideal job, right
M: Yes. If I had not given up the accounting class then, I would become an accountant now.
W: Well, don’t be too hard on yourself. By the way, what do you think of your present job as a bank clerk
M: Frankly, if I had known it was so boring, I would never have accepted it.
W: I know. Well, you know I have a friend who works in an accounting firm. He wants to hire an assistant to help him deal with accounting affairs. I would like to recommend you to him.
M: Really Thanks a million. I owe you a meal.
Text 8
W: I visited the countryside museum last week. It opened two months ago. You’d like it there.
M: Why Is there lots of information about trees
W: No. It’s about wild birds that live in the forest. You can watch videos there too.
M: Oh! Is it open on Saturdays
W: Yes. It’s only closed on Mondays. I went on a Thursday.
M: And where is it
W: It’s fifteen miles from here. It took about twenty minutes to get there and about thirty to get home because the roads were busier then. Here’s a map for your parents.
M: Thanks.
W: When I went, there was a special plant exhibition but they’re having a study day for teenagers there soon about different kinds of clouds.
M: Do I have to pay for the study day
W: You’re fourteen, aren’t you
M: Yes.
W: Well, you won’t because it’s free for students who are your age or younger. But it costs £18 for students who are sixteen or older.
M: Thanks. I’ll tell my parents.
Text 9
W: Hi, John. Long time no see. How are you doing
M: I am doing OK. It would be better if I had a job.
W: Are you looking for a job
M: Yes. I graduated a month ago. Now, I want to get a job in the financial field.
W: How long have you been looking for a new job
M: I just started this week.
W: Didn’t you have any interviews with those firms that came to our campus two months ago I believe quite a few companies came to hire students for their Finance Departments.
M: I got only one interview. But I have not heard from them. I guess I did not make it.
W: Don’t worry. You always did well in school. Your good grades will help you get a job quickly. Besides, the job market is pretty good right now, and all companies need financial analysts. Did you mail your résumé to recruiting agencies
M: No, I have not thought about recruiting agencies. But, I do look closely at the employment ads listed in the newspaper every day.
W: Are there a lot of openings
M: Quite a few. Some of them require experienced candidates. What you suggested sounds good. I may give it a try.
Text 10
M: Holidays are happy days with pleasurable activities and delicious foods. Many people, however, are worried about the weight that comes along with those delicious foods. With proper planning though, it is possible to control your weight. The idea is to enjoy the holidays but not to eat too much. You don’t have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy. The following suggestions may be of some help to you. Do not miss meals. Before you leave home for a big dinner, have a small, low-fat snack. This may help to keep you from overeating when you see tables full of delicious food. Begin with clear soup and fruit or vegetables. A large glass of water before you eat may help you feel full. Use a small plate. A large plate will encourage you to have more than you need. Stay away from high-fat foods. Dishes that look oily or creamy have a lot of fat in them. Choose meats containing little or no fat. Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables. If you have a sweet tooth, try fruits. They don’t have as much fat as cream and chocolate. Don’t take a break from exercise during the holidays. A 20-minute walk after a meal can help burn off extra calories.

29.C 细节理解题。根据第三段“Although it’s standard practice in the industry, publishers don’t want to destroy books. So instead, many are donating unsold copies, switching to on-demand printing. 33.B 词义猜测题。根据文章第三段“In fact, it turns out that instead of citing why you are right and someone else is wrong in a heated conversation, one of the most effective strategies you can use for changing someone’s mind is to find areas where you agree.”可推知,“honey”指的是找到共同点。故选B。
34.D 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Make your bias a disconfirmation bias;in other words, when you have an opinion on something, don’t just read information that confirms it. Instead, make an effort to find information that could potentially prove you wrong. If you were right all along, this exercise would only make your arguments stronger. If you were wrong, your mind would have been opened up to new ideas.”

Aiming to raise our awareness of protecting the school environment, our school Students’ Union organized a tree-planting activity themed “More trees, greener school” last Saturday afternoon.
At 2:00 pm, the students from Senior Two took an active part in it, some digging, some planting trees and others watering trees. Happily, more than 100 young trees were planted along the roads in our school as planned. Tired as we were, we enjoyed ourselves.
Not only did this activity promote our teamwork, but it also made our school greener and more beautiful.

One possible version:
Hesitating for a second, the manager agreed, “Just do it, and I’ll take all responsibilities.” He handed her the tools she needed, watching in disbelief as Catalina confidently began to work. Her fingers moved swiftly, each part fitting perfectly into place as if guided by an unseen force. Minutes ticked by, and the tension in the air thickened with every successful turn of the screw.
Thunderous applause erupted and rocked the hall. When Catalina finished, the telescope stood tall and proud, restored to its former glory. The manager beamed, and his doubts vanished. “How did you do it ” he asked, amazement colouring his voice. Catalina smiled, her eyes shining with determination, “I’ve been preparing for this moment ever since grandpa gave me a telescope. I knew I could fix it because I know every part of it, just like I know every star in the sky.” That day, Catalina not only fixed the telescope but also proved to everyone that she was destined to become a great astronomer.单元素养测评卷(五)

Enjoy flavours from all corners of the globe at Reffen. Found in the former industrial site of Refshale en, this street food market is an exciting hang-out with a rainbow of cuisines from Thai to Kurdish. Just across a river, Torvehallerne is the place for a bite. Further south, BaneGaarden is hidden in leafy railway sidings at Vesterbro, and offers soul food from the Deep South of the US.
Take a getaway at a castle in Zealand
On the island, one of Denmark’s oldest castles overlooks the scenic north-west coast. The beautiful 13th-century Dragsholm Slot is now a luxury hotel with one of the most well-known restaurants in Zealand—Dragsholm Slot Gourmet. It holds a Michelin star, led by chef Jeppe Foldager who serves seasonal cuisines with materials farmed and hunted from the surrounding fields, forests and sea. For a less pricey meal, the castle has the farm-to-table bistro and casual Madhus, where visitors can enjoy drinks, snacks and light meals.

B [2024·福建泉州四校高二期末联考]
A new coffee shop in New York lets its customers help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in every cup! This is the first coffee shop by Café Joyeux, which is based in Europe. They hire individuals with IDD, providing valuable training and employment opportunities and empowering them along the way.
Café Joyeux was founded in France in response to the alarming fact that over 8 million people with IDD face an 80% unemployment rate. The coffee shop aims to fight against this inequality by not only providing inclusive employment but also leading the way in promoting workplace inclusion more broadly.
The story started on a sailing boat in Brittany, France, where Captain Yann Bucaille Lanrezac, a successful businessman, shared his passion for sailing with passengers of all abilities. During a trip, Theo, a young man with IDD, asked Yann for a job. Yann hesitated, saying it was complicated, leaving Theo silent. This encounter led to the creation of Café Joyeux, employing and training people with mental and cognitive (认知的) disabilities, which has since expanded to over 19 locations across Europe.
In early 2024, the first American Café Joyeux opened in New York City. Bucaille Lanrezac and his wife, Lydwine Bucaille, founders of Café Joyeux, employed 169 team members with disabilities. They believed their employees could provide excellent products and services, and stressed the significance of equal rights and fair treatment in the workplace. They started by empowering their employees and reinvesting 100% of their profits to further this mission, both within and outside their cafés.
Early supporters, like Giovana Mullins, have praised the coffee shop Café Joyeux for its welcoming atmosphere. “As a customer walking in, even if you don’t know what this coffee shop is all about, you will feel the energy and the joy,” she said.
( )24.What problem does Café Joyeux aim to address
A.The high pricing of coffee.
B.The expansion of European powers.
C.The unemployment of people with IDD.
D.The unreasonable limitations on sailing.
( )25.What brought about the idea for Café Joyeux
A.A job request on a trip.
B.A public awareness campaign.
C.A well-known sailing race.
D.A discussion among customers.
( )26.What do we know about the employees with IDD in Café Joyeux
A.They serve as volunteers.
B.They receive equal treatment.
C.They are gifted in storytelling.
D.They have to finish complicated tasks.
( )27.What does Giovana Mullins think of Café Joyeux
A.It needs to improve its services.
B.It deserves more funds.
C.It is poorly managed.

Some people prefer paperbacks because they’re easy to borrow and share. Others will go for e-readers. But which is the more environmentally sustainable option
Whether it’s better to read books in print or on a device is complicated, because of the complex interaction between the resources involved across the entire life cycle of a published work: how books and devices are shipped, what energy they use to run, if they can be recycled.
On the one side, traditional print publishing comes with a high carbon footprint. According to 2023 data, 32 million trees are cut down each year to make paper for books. Then there are the energy-intensive processes of printing and shipping—to say nothing of the many books that are destroyed because they remain unsold. Although it’s standard practice in the industry, publishers don’t want to destroy books. So instead, many are donating unsold copies, switching to on-demand printing. Publishers are also rethinking book design, since certain fonts (字体) can be more climate-friendly by using less ink and less paper.
On the other hand, digital reading seems to have a considerable eco-advantage over print because it is paperless, so it saves trees and shipping. Moreover, tech companies that make e-readers such as Amazon offer recycling programmes for old devices. But digital devices also come with a substantial carbon footprint, especially at the manufacturing stage. Their cases are made with plastics and the minerals in their batteries require resource-heavy mining.
Figuring out whether to take a digital device or a paperback to the beach ultimately depends on how much you read.“If you buy an e-reader and you read loads and loads of books on it, then it’s the lowest carbon thing to do,” said Mike Berners Lee, the author of The Carbon Footprint of Everything. “But if I buy it, read a couple of books, and decide that I prefer paperback books, then it’s the worst of all worlds.”
Yet Berners Lee said that reading is still, relatively speaking, a pretty sustainable activity—regardless of whether you read using an e-reader, a phone or old-fashioned paperback.
( )28.Why is it hard to tell if print or digital books are more eco-friendly

When discussions are getting heated, divisions on opinions potentially lead to some awkward moments. This causes many of us to struggle with how to convince people to change their minds and how to argue our side effectively. Unfortunately, we’ve already become quite divided.
One study showed that when people receive information against their beliefs, their brains aren’t as active as when they receive information that confirms their beliefs. Humans have a well-documented bias (偏见) called the “confirmation bias”, which is a tendency to seek out information that confirms our existing views and to avoid information that disconfirms them.
Throwing data at people isn’t at all effective in changing minds and especially hearts. Instead, people just find it super annoying. Luckily, research has provided some guidance on best practices, and, not surprisingly, they all suggest what our parents have been telling us for decades: you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. In fact, it turns out that instead of citing why you are right and someone else is wrong in a heated conversation, one of the most effective strategies you can use for changing someone’s mind is to find areas where you agree.
Another thing we can do is be open to other perspectives (观点). We can start by acknowledging our own confirmation bias and making a conscious effort to override it. We can also try to take other people’s perspectives. And better yet—ask them for it. Ask them why they feel the way they do and what would change their mind. Be open to admitting that you could be wrong and make it easy for others to admit their own mistakes.
Finally, make new friends—friends that are different from you. Make your bias a disconfirmation bias;in other words, when you have an opinion on something, don’t just read information that confirms it. Instead, make an effort to find information that could potentially prove you wrong. If you were right all along, this exercise would only make your arguments stronger. If you were wrong, your mind would have been opened up to new ideas. Either way, this kind of open-mindedness will give you a brand-new perspective on life, and you might even make some unlikely new friends in the process.
( )32.Which can illustrate “confirmation bias”
A.We tend to welcome different ideas.
B.We accept messages from the others.
C.We argue against points of disagreement.
D.We prefer information in line with our views.
( )33.What does the underlined word “honey”in Paragraph 3 refer to
A.Following advice.
B.Sharing common ground.
C.Admitting mistakes.
D.Blocking different ideas.
( )34.How can we benefit from our bias according to the last paragraph
A.By letting go of our own opinion.
B.By making arguments more reliable.
C.By opening up minds to new friends.
D.By securing information opposite to ours.
( )35.What is the best title of the text
A.How to negotiate with others
B.Why it’s so hard to change hearts and minds
C.How to shift minds in polarized communication
D.Why open-mindedness is effective in conversations

Have you considered how to choose your major in university, which is of great significance for your future career Here is some practical advice.
Initially, don’t choose a major merely based on money; otherwise mistakes will happen. 36. Can you see yourself investing the next 40 years in this career without getting bored Actually choosing a major with high-paying careers won’t guarantee you a high-paying job. It depends on openings and your competitors when you graduate.
37. You want to pick something that interests you, but you need to be sure you won’t get sick of it as time progresses. 38. A hobby is a pursuit outside one’s regular occupation for relaxation while a passion comforts you and drives you crazy at the same time. It isn’t relaxing. It inserts itself into your life. When you choose to study your hobby and build your life around it, it can lose its appeal and won’t be relaxing.
Thirdly, never choose a major by feeling instead of research. Being interested in a major isn’t enough. Researching the field will ensure you choose a right major. If you know someone in the field, ask them for some information. Besides, consider the entire journey you’ll pursue—the coursework, the major demands, the school time you’ll need, and the available job prospects. 39.
Lastly, don’t always depend on your parents. 40. However, the choice is ultimately yours. If anyone wants to help you in choosing a major and you completely agree with their opinions, then go with it. But if you want your future to go in any other direction, speak up. The only way to get the best outcome is to shape your own future.
A.Next, a hobby is never meant to be your priority.
B.The opinions of your family aren’t something to ignore.
C.Besides, keep a balance between hobbies and relaxation.
D.Typically, people will confuse their hobbies with their passions.
E.You should also consider your passions, dislikes and happiness.

As Papá fell sound asleep, Catalina slid from her bed and felt her way to the front door. The girl waited a moment to see if any of her family would wake up, but nobody stirred. She tiptoed upstairs to her “Observatory”, longing for drinking in deep lungfuls of the clear night air under the bright stars.
She polished her dear telescope, which was presented by her grandpa, the only one to support her dream. She assembled (组装) it, disassembled it and reassembled it repeatedly, knowing its parts very well.
Through it she could explore the unknown galaxy, the Milky Way stretching across the deep blue sky. Night was always her favourite time. When everything was quiet, she was lost in her starry night. At this moment, she seemed to forget her cares and sorrows in the daytime.
She told her secret dream to these beloved ones, her friends, teachers and even her father. When she said, “Papá, I want to be an astronomer working in the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory someday,” her father replied, “Maybe if you work hard, you’ll be hired to clean the offices.” No one believed she would be a scientist one day. But why She knew she could be a good scientist. She knew it!
A big day was coming—to visit the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, where she had visited for dozens of times, familiar with every set of the instruments there. This time with her classmates she was still eager for something stimulating.
She took a cautious step forward, holding her breath, her eyes getting closer to the lens (镜片) of the telescope. She adjusted the device softly and carefully, hoping to find more. “Bang!” suddenly there came a loud noise. One of her old friends “one-metre” telescope fell down, broken.
“Look out! Stop touching anything! Step backward!” the manager yelled.
“One-metre is broken, but the scientist has the day off. Nobody can fix it,” an operator added. Worries blanketed the hall.
“I CAN FIX IT,” Catalina’s voice was surprisingly calm.
“You what ” the manager uttered, confused and doubtful.
“It has 67 parts in total. An adjustable spanner (扳手) and a star screwdriver (螺丝刀) can help.”
“Then you know how to assemble it.” His eyes wide open, he still half believed.
Confidently, she nodded.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Paragraph 1:
Hesitating for a second, the manager agreed, “Just do it, and I’ll take all responsibilities.”

Paragraph 2:
Thunderous applause erupted and rocked the hall.
