根据第一段“Here, he imagines what a typical day would be like in the future—through the eyes of Isla, ‘a child in 2050’—after we’ve cut carbon emissions (排放).”
根据第二段“…and her life looks pretty much like life does today: she has a house, a car and a job. There are forests, and giant machines taking carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) out of the atmosphere. It all sounds like a green and pleasant land, but it doesn’t sound like the future to me. It’s just like the life we are living now.”
根据第四段“…wishing to move to Canada with its cooler climate and plentiful water.”
通读全文,尤其根据第一段中“…Adam Vaughan recently published ‘How your day will look in a carbon-neutral (碳中和) world’. Here, he imagines what a typical day would be like in the future—through the eyes of Isla, ‘a child in 2050’—after we’ve cut carbon emissions (排放).” (…… 以及第三段“It’s an interesting exercise, imagining what it will be like in about 30 years. I thought I would give it a try: here is my story about Edie, living in Toronto, Canada in 2050.”(这是一个有趣的练习,想象大约30年后会是什么样子。 故选A项。
1.D 根据上文“Open an app at your smartphone and scan the code bar on the garbage can. When you throw garbage into the garbage can, it will show the weight of the garbage and the points you can get from doing so.”可知,上文谈到了扫码扔垃圾的方式,D项中提到的 such a way of handling garbage 与之呼应。故选D项。
2.F 根据下文“The environmental problems have become constant headaches in the development of those cities. Encouraging garbage classification has become an effective way.”
3.B 根据本段首句“In some cities, a variety of multifunctional smart garbage cans are being put into use.” B项“Another kind of garbage can is even smarter.”(另一种垃圾桶更智能。)
C项“It is no wonder that residents cheered for their presence.”(难怪居民们都为它们的出现而欢呼。)
5.E 根据上文“Garbage disposal is a small issue that involves everybody each day. However, it is also a big issue.” E项“It will affect China’s transformation towards green development.”(它会影响中国向绿色发展转型。)
故填to arrive。
故填which。
故填on。
Unit 2 LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE
Life in the future
What life will be like in the future is difficult to predict. It is, however, possible to use models to make forecasts about future development. One way to catch a glimpse of the future is to examine some of the major trends (趋势) in contemporary society.
Transportation
Current trends indicate that transportation is becoming cleaner, faster and safer. Public transportation is already well developed in most urban areas of China. New technology is being used to make sure that the cars, taxis, buses and trains we use do not pollute the air.
Business
It will not be business as usual in the future. Many companies and consumers have already begun reforming the way they do business. E-commerce or business done on the Internet is becoming more and more popular as people discover the advantages of online shopping.
Health and medicine
People in the future will be able to enjoy a longer and healthier life and remain active even in old age. Advances in medical science allow us to deal with new diseases. With a better understanding of the human body, scientists and physicians will be able to cure more diseases. Perhaps more importantly, new discoveries in genetics and biochemistry may lead to changes in the way diseases are cured and medicines are made.
Education and knowledge
Homework will always be homework, but the schools of the future will probably be quite different from what they are today. In the future, there may be more “e-schools”. Real classrooms will always be popular, but distance education will help people study whenever they have time and wherever they may be.

New Scientist magazine’s chief reporter Adam Vaughan recently published “How your day will look in a carbon-neutral (碳中和) world”. Here, he imagines what a typical day would be like in the future—through the eyes of Isla, “a child in 2050”—after we’ve cut carbon emissions (排放). Vaughan acknowledges the writing is out of imagination but it is concluded by research, expert opinions, and experiments happening right now.
Isla lives in the United Kingdom—Will it still be a united kingdom in 2050 —and her life looks pretty much like life does today: she has a house, a car and a job. There are forests, and giant machines taking carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) out of the atmosphere. It all sounds like a green and pleasant land, but it doesn’t sound like the future to me. It’s just like the life we are living now.
It’s an interesting exercise, imagining what it will be like in about 30 years. I thought I would give it a try: here is my story about Edie, living in Toronto, Canada in 2050.
Edie’s alarm goes off at 4:00 am. She gets up, and folds up the bed in the garage that is her apartment and workshop. She considers herself to be very lucky to have this garage. The only people that live in houses these days are multimillionaires from all over the world, especially from Arizona and other southern states, wishing to move to Canada with its cooler climate and plentiful water. They can afford the million-dollar immigrant visa fee.
At that time, there are no office or industrial jobs anymore: artificial intelligence and robots will take care of those. The few jobs left are in service, culture or health care. Luckily, Edie has her job.
She checks the balance in her Personal Carbon Allowance (PCA) account to see if she has enough to buy another battery for her e-bike. If she doesn’t have enough then she will have to buy carbon credits, and they are expensive. She sets her alarm for 6:00 pm when the streets of Toronto will come alive again on this hot November day.
( )1.What can we know about Adam Vaughan’s passage
A.It is about creative imagination.
B.It mainly describes advance in science.
C.It is his vision of the future.
D.It focuses on solutions to carbon emissions.
( )2.What does the author think of Isla’s life
A.Satisfying. B.Extraordinary.
C.Meaningful. D.Ordinary.
( )3.Why do people like Canada according to Edie
A.People want to get better education.
B.The living expenses there are rather low.
C.It has a cool and comfortable temperature.
D.The water in Canada hasn’t been polluted.
( )4.What does the author intend to tell us
A.What our life will be like in 2050.
B.Two women’s entirely different lives.
C.A look into Adam Vaughan’s life.
D.How we can handle the carbon problem.
