Saltwater recreational fishing is part of Florida's tourist economy.Anglers (take
40 million saltwater fishing trips each year in Florida in hopes of hooking a snapper and
hogfish. But strict fishing regulations mean that most of the caught fish are safely returned to
the water.
On Biscayne Bay,Captain Wayne Conn's 75-foot boat carried twenty anglers. It was not
ong before one fisherman made a catch. It was a mutton snapper, but it was just 17 inches
long.It had to go back in the water. But it couldn't be just thrown back in.
Marine fisheries specialist Angela Collins said,"When reef fish living in deep water are
brought to the surface, the gases in their bodies expand, sometimes greatly. They can
experience a condition known as barotrauma. That's when you see the fish's eyes bulging
out of its head or its stomach popping out of its mouth. That gas expands and has to go
somewhere,maybe detrimental to the fish.
Anglers must have special equipment on board to ensure reef fish survive once they're
returned to the water. That includes long needles to pierce the fish's swim bladder in its body,
releasing the pressure. But it's also important to get the fish back down to its habitat on the
pottom,100 feet or more below the surface.Collins attached a weight to the fish's lower lip
before lowering it slowly back into the water."This just shoots him down fast,"she said."It's
closed until this gets to 100 feet.It pops open, letting the fish swim off."
The ship moved to a different spot in deeper water and someone soon got a hit.Conn gave
a shout."Check it out,that fish is special,"he said.It was a 7-or 8-pound mutton snapper.
That was a great eating fish. But Lauren Hayes from the University of Miami decided to
release it."I love animals.Fishing is what it is,and the moments waiting for a fish to bite feel
more real than having it in the net,she said.
