Pursuing a career in travel often begins with unpaid internships (实习)where beginner guides share their passion for destinations they’ve grown to love. These roles are highly sought after by those looking to break into the industry and are particularly valued by employers who recognize the importance of practical experience and a deep understanding of the travel sector.
Essential skills & traits needed
While everyone brings their own personality to the job, there are some basic qualities that all tour guides need to have:
Energy and enthusiasm are an absolute must. When the day’s tour is done, a guide still needs to study commentary (现场解说)and confirm the next day’s activities, so you will often need to operate on very little sleep.
A friendly personality is needed when interacting with clients tour operators and the general public.
An insight into a wide range of cultures helps a guide settle all kinds of issues, not only in the place being visited, but also among the people on the tour.
Familiarity with emergency procedures and the capacity to remain calm during critical situations are invaluable for any tour guide. Your assurance as a tour leader can positively influence the entire group.
Be aware of the facts
Tour guiding often demands extended periods away from home, with peak work times sometimes overlapping (重叠)with cherished family holidays. Burnout is a challenge to manage, yet it doesn’t necessarily signal the end of a journey in the travel sector. The industry frequently presents opportunities in product development and sales, where your guiding experience can serve as a solid foundation for success in these new roles.

In the summer of 2015, Jenny, a young environmental enthusiast, traveled to the coast of California with her family to enjoy a relaxing beach vacation. She was excited to spend time by the ocean, swimming and basking in the sun. However, as she walked along the shore, she was astonished to see piles of plastic bottles, broken fishing nets and discarded wrappers along the sand. The once beautiful beach was now littered with trash, and this made Jenny’s heart sink.
Jenny had always cared about the environment, but seeing the pollution up close made her realize just how serious the problem had become. It was not only ruining her vacation but also endangering the marine life she loved. She thought of the turtles that might mistake plastic for food, or the seabirds that could get trapped in the nets. She knew she had to do something about it.
After returning home, Jenny decided to take action. She began volunteering at local beach cleanups every weekend, picking up trash and raising awareness about the dangers of ocean pollution. She encouraged her friends, family and classmates to join her. And soon, a small group of dedicated volunteers formed. They organized monthly cleanups and started educating the community about reducing plastic waste.
But Jenny didn’t stop there. Realizing that the problem was far too big for just a small group to handle, she created a non-profit organization called Ocean’s Hope. The organization’s mission was to raise awareness about plastic pollution, organize global beach cleanups and collaborate with businesses to reduce plastic packaging. Jenny’s passion for the ocean grew stronger, and she worked tirelessly to inspire others.
By 2020, Ocean’s Hope had become a global movement. Volunteers from all over the world participated in cleanups, and companies began adopting more sustainable practices. Jenny’s dream of a cleaner, safer ocean was becoming a reality.

Baby foods on market generally contain too much sugar, causing a source of health concern, a new report by World Health Organization (WHO) says.
The United Nations specialized agency on public health based the conclusion on an examination by its European office of about 8,000 baby food products on shelf between November 2017 and January 2018. It warns that the very high level of sugars present in commercial products is a cause for concern. They increase the risk of overweight and teeth holes while causing a lifetime eating habit in favor of sugary foods.
“In around half of the products examined, more than 30 percent of calories were from total sugars and around a third of products contained added sugar or other sweetening agents,” the world health body said in the report released on Monday to update guidelines for babies’ diets. The examination that covered more than 500 stores in Austria, Bulgaria, Israel and Hungary also finds the labels of up to 60 percent of the inspected food are misleading consumers by claiming to suit babies under six months old.
In the report, countries are advised to make new laws on controlling high sugar intake, ban added sugars and sweeteners in baby foods, and put an end to the promotion of breast-milk substitutes (替代品). It also requires labels on candies and sweetened drinks, including fruit juices and condensed (浓缩的) milk, to state they are not suitable for children under three. Meanwhile, WHO recommends that children between six months and two years be fed nutrient-rich home-prepared foods.
WHO has long recommended that babies receive only breast milk for the first six months of life. “Good nutrition in babyhood and early childhood remains the key to ensuring best child growth and development, and to better health outcomes later in life,” said Zsuzsanna Jakab, who served as the WHO Regional Director for Europe, in a statement.
8. About how many tested baby foods had over 30% of calories from sugar
A. One-third. B. Half.
C. 60%. D. Almost all.
9. What misleading claim appeared on 60% of the labels
A. Ready to drink. B. No added sugar.
C. Suitable for babies under six months. D. Organic ingredients.
10. Which of the following may WHO disagree with
A. Banning added sugars in baby foods.
B. Promoting breast-milk substitutes for babies under six months.
C. Requiring labels on candies to state they are unsuitable for children under three.
D. Encouraging nutrient-rich home-prepared foods for children aged 6 months to 2 years.
11. Which age group does WHO recommend should receive only breast milk
A. 0-6 months. B. 6-12 months. C. 6-24 months. D. 2-3 years.

Just by typing a few keywords and waiting a few seconds, a picture comparable to that painted by a human artist appears on screen. In some paintings created by AI, an elderly man can become a handsome animated image, and pets can be turned into adorable cartoon girls or boys. Ordinary people without any painting skills can be the possessors of a wonderful artwork with just a few taps of the keyboard.
However, new things are always accompanied by controversy (争议). Issues such as whether AI art generators will replace human artists, and the copyrights on AI paintings are being hotly debated.
Huang Ge, an illustrator from Shanghai, said that it usually takes several hours or days to complete one illustration. But with AI art generators, the efficiency is greatly improved. Ding Jiao, a comic artist, considers the popularity of AI art generators reasonable as many people who are not good at drawing can create great works through them and they can satisfy users’ curiosity.
So is AI painting gradually replacing human painting In the hot topic “Using a picture to prove that human artists will never be replaced by AI” online, many netizens uploaded their paintings to prove that humans are better than AI.
“Though AI technology has developed rapidly, AI cannot replace humans as it can just copy human behavior. The warmth and inspiration in human creations are irreplaceable,” said Ding Daoshi, an independent analyst in the Internet sector.
Another controversial issue is that there is no consensus (共识) of who owns the copyright of AI art. Some users have openly sold their AI paintings and earned money, but it is still a gray area about whether these artworks belong to the users, the digital tool developers or even AI. Ding Daoshi noted that the various sides should get together to debate the issue and come up with some accepted rules as soon as possible, because AI is already involved deeply into the lives of human beings.
12. What can ordinary people achieve with AI art generators in a few seconds
A. Learn advanced painting skills.
B. Sell their paintings for huge profits.
C. Replace professional artists completely.
D. Create impressive artworks without drawing ability.
13. What is Ding Daoshi’s attitude toward AI replacing human artists
A. Human creativity and warmth are irreplaceable.
B. AI will soon replace humans completely.
C. AI is superior to humans in every way.
D. AI lacks commercial value.
14. What does the underlined phrase “gray area” in paragraph 6 probably mean
A. A dark shadow. B. A colorful picture.
C. An unclear or undecided situation. D. A hidden place.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. The End of Human Artists
B. AI Art Generators: Innovation and Controversy
C. How to Sell AI Paintings Online
D. AI Art: Fast, Fun and Perfect

Zaib grew up in a single-parent family. Her mother, Rohana, worked as a receptionist in a small office and had not been paid for two months because the company was in crisis. Still, she spent every coin she saved to send Zaib to the best school in the city.
Two days ago Zaib came home frowning. “I can’t eat my lunch again,” she said, pushing away the simple rice and vegetables. “Saddaf always brings dairy chocolate. Why can’t I have some ” Rohana gently promised to buy some next week, but Zaib locked herself in her room.
The next morning Zaib left without breakfast and went straight to Saddaf’s house after school. Mrs Saba, Saddaf’s mother, welcomed her warmly, prepared tasty food and let the girls play late into the evening. Zaib thought, “Aunt Saba is better than Mummy.”
The following day Mrs Saba only gave her breakfast and asked the driver to drop her at her own house so she could pick up her lunch box. Zaib was surprised to see her mother’s red eyes and pale face; Rohana had worked through the night. In an unsatisfied voice Zaib asked, “Did you pack my lunch ” Rohana nodded and pointed to the kitchen.
Zaib grabbed the box, disappointed, sure it would be the usual plain meal. On the way to school she stared at the unexciting container, wishing she could stay with her aunt forever.
During the lunch break, she slowly opened the lid — and gasped. Lying on top of the rice was one perfect heart-shaped chocolate. Her cheeks burned. At that moment she realized how much her mother loved her in spite of their poverty. Silently, she whispered, "Sorry, Mummy."
But saying sorry in her heart was not enough. She knew she had to act.

Dear Tom,
My favourite is Li Bai, the “Immortal of Poetry” from Tang Dynasty. I love him because his lines are both wild and clear. One moment he is chasing the moon on a river, the next he is sharing quiet homesickness under the same bright moon. His images are simple — wine, wind and mountain — but they open a huge sky in my mind. Whenever exams press me, I recite his poetry and feel free again. That afternoon, Zaib asked Mrs. Sabai’s driver to take her straight home. The moment she burst through the door, she found her mother asleep at the kitchen table, a half-sewn button on Zaib’s old uniform still in her fingers. Zaib gently laid the heart-shaped chocolate beside the needle, covered her mother with a shawl, and whispered, “I was selfish, Mummy. Your love is sweeter than any chocolate. Thank you for everything.” Rohana woke to the soft kiss on her cheek and the chocolate melting between their palms.
From that day on, Zaib proudly carried her modest lunch. Every Friday she saved her pocket money to buy two small chocolates — one for Saddaf and one to slip secretly into her mother’s handbag, tied with a paper heart that read, “For the sweetest mum.” Saddaf soon joined the plan, and together the girls turned lunchtime into a quiet celebration of gratitude, proving that even the smallest return of love can light an entire home and that love, when returned, grows sweeter for everyone.
