Text 1
W: Do you know if this train stops at the Carlisle Street stop
M: There’s a route map over there by the door.
Text 2
W: Wow, that opera singer is fantastic! I could listen to him all night.
M: No, not me. I prefer rock music. This guy is kind of boring even more so than jazz singers. I bet my mum would like him, though.
Text 3
W: Can’t we just wait and go shopping tomorrow I’m too tired to go today. The sale will still be happening.
M: Tomorrow is Monday. We both have to work and the store will be closed by the time we can get there.
Text 4
W: What kind of ice cream would you like, chocolate or milk
M: Neither. Thank you. I like them both but right now all I want is some water.
Text 5
W: I would have come back a week earlier, but the weather was so bad that we couldn’t travel.
M: That’s a real pity. The festival lasted two weeks, and it just finished yesterday.
Text 6
M: I’ve noticed that you always have a lot of fun. How do you do it
W: On the weekend, if the weather permits, I’ll go camping with my family. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time
M: I’ll go to karaoke at night for entertainment.
W: Good. I know you have a talent for singing songs.
M: Oh thanks. And this winter, I’m going to take the skiing classes.
W: Great. I’m so excited to see your good performances.
Text 7
M: Where are you going, Mrs Green
W: We’re going to the subway station first. We have to catch the train at 4 o’clock.
M: There are only 30 minutes left. Today is Friday, and there may be a traffic jam. You should have left home a bit earlier.
W: That’s why we are choosing the subway. Tommy is always slow, you know. We often have to wait for him.
M: But your son is very cute.
W: Thanks!
M: I guess you’re leaving for Washington to see Tommy’s grandparents
W: Yes, they miss Tommy very much, so we’ll take him to see them.
M: Please remember to send my regards to them.
W: OK, I will. There is no more time for chatting. See you next weekend.
M: Have a nice trip.
Text 8
W: The heavy workload among primary school students has been a topic of a national concern.
M: Yes, especially during vacation time, they have a lot of homework and have to go to extra classes. My sister signs my niece Joy up for three extra classes on weekdays, and that number doubles during the holiday.
W: But in fact, a heavy study burden can limit students’ creativity and damage their health.
M: Everyone knows that, but they do it anyway. Happily, a lot of parents have started lessening the pressure on kids.
W: I usually give my students less homework, which I think is better than not being able to hand it in on time or copying it.
M: So do I. Most parents are very anxious about their children’s study, but actually, it is more important to develop children’s interest in study.
W: And let them develop good study habits, which can benefit all their lives. Oh, let’s discuss it after work. I have to give a class now.
Text 9
W: Mike, you’re studying snakes all around the world. So, you have to travel a lot. Do you ever take holidays
M: No, not often. My work is also my hobby. I’ve been to Paris, Rome and Egypt, but it was always because my work took me there. For my last trip, I went to Sudan to look for snakes.
W: But you must take a holiday sometimes.
M: Well, once or twice I have travelled to some places not connected with snakes. For example, I spent a holiday in Hawaii with some friends. They enjoyed the beach and the markets while I went swimming underwater with my underwater camera.
W: Is your camera the most important thing when you travel
M: Yes, my camera and my sleeping bag. I can sleep anywhere I want.
W: So, do you ever stay in hotels
M: If I go with friends, I might stay at a hotel or a guest house. But normally I’m on my own, so I rarely book a hotel in advance. I can fall asleep in a sleeping bag anytime and anywhere.
Text 10
M: Hey, everyone, here is the latest weather report for you and your family. This morning, we’re seeing the sun with cloudy periods, as well as a little snow. Right now, I am at the top of Mount Raven, where it is two degrees and is expected to rise to about five degrees by noon. Overnight temperatures will probably drop to at least seven degrees below zero. Alaska is a cold place, but you’re probably used to it by now! Tomorrow’s forecast calls for more snow with a high of zero and a low of twelve degrees below zero. Conditions are perfect for skiing this weekend, but I wouldn’t want to be playing out in this cold. If you’re heading out to the mountains tomorrow, please remember to dress warmly to avoid getting sick. Next Monday is going to be a lot warmer, so maybe then it would be a good time to take the family out. Well, we’ll go back to the news room now for a look at what’s happening in sports, and stay tuned for a speech from the president this afternoon at 5:00 pm. Take care, folks!

根据第二段中“In October 2023, 3M and Discovery Education named Heman the winner of their Young Scientist Challenge. His prize: $25,000. His accomplishment: inventing a soap that could one day treat and prevent some forms of skin cancer.”
根据第四段中“Heman wondered if there was a cheaper way for people to deal with the disease. He thought of adding a skin cancer medicine called imiquimod to a bar of soap…‘Everyone uses soap and water for cleaning. So soap would probably be the best option.’”
根据最后一段“In 2023, he came across the 3M Challenge and submitted a video explaining his idea. Soon, he received an invitation to the company’s headquarters. He spoke in front of a panel of judges. That day, he was named the winner.”
根据第四段中“Heman was born in Africa. He remembers seeing people in Africa working in the hot sun without protection for their skin. Because of that, some of them developed skin cancer…Heman wondered if there was a cheaper way for people to deal with the disease.”
根据第一段中“Wilson, a researcher at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, and his colleagues carried out a new study to see if taking part in a cycling programme could result in measurable changes in the mind of teenagers.”
根据第二段中“They learned cycling safety and skills outdoors while raising their heart rate and just having fun.”
根据第三段中Wilson所说的话“Our research shows how it benefits the mind and social relationships as well.” You are looking at your hearing, you’re balancing, you’re navigating and turning. Oftentimes, you’re doing it with someone else, so there’s the positive effect of company or group activity…” 故选A。
根据最后一段内容,尤其是其中的“While exercise has powerful mental health benefits, it’s not universal.”和“And other aspects of healthy living are also important, noted Wilson.”
根据第三段中“Simply put, the central idea of the growth mindset is that intelligence (智力) and ability can be developed, and children who have this idea will try to seek opportunities to push themselves, understanding that they are likely to achieve what they want if they persevere.” 故选A。
画线词embrace后的代词them指代上文中的closed doors, tough interviews, rejection letters,结合下文“…understand that none of them is failure…suggesting they view every negative experience as a chance to learn and grow, rather than an end point.”
根据第五段中“Barclays LifeSkills has listed skills important for individuals in their future careers—communicating through video and audio calls, rather than writing, and working with people from different generations and backgrounds.”
根据第一段中“We all want to give our kids the best possible advice, but when it comes to what path they should explore after education and what career possibilities are out there, where should we start ”以及第二段中“For parents, the most important thing is to keep options open and to understand that equipping them with life skills is important…”

38.A 根据本段的主题句“Studies like this have limitations.”可知,这样的研究有一定的局限性,再根据空后的“It can only uncover connection.” 故选A。
根据空后的“In recent years, rates of depression and anxiety have risen among young people. So there’s a clear need for accessible and effective mental health resources (资源). Giving back to the community may be one such resource.”
40.C 根据空前的“Previous research has also found links between volunteering and well-being among adults. Serving the community seems to help people feel a sense of purpose.” 为社区服务有助于人们体会到一种使命感,再结合空后的“Generosity has also been shown to boost happiness and improve physical health.”

One possible version:
My camping experience
Hello everyone, I’m Li Hua. I’d like to share my camping experience last Sunday.
My family and I went camping in the forest park. Upon arrival, we set up our tents and prepared a delicious picnic with the food that we brought. The park was incredibly beautiful, with fresh air and a peaceful environment. We enjoyed a relaxing picnic surrounded by nature. In the afternoon, we explored the park, discovering various plants and fascinating creatures along the way. As night came, we made a campfire and shared stories under the sky spotted with stars.
It was a truly magical experience. This camping trip was a fantastic opportunity to connect with nature and create lasting memories with my family.

One possible version:
I guess that was what caused my sister to come outside. At first, I was doubtful and tense, as I assumed that she would begin to make fun of me or at least burst out laughing However, she did neither. I pulled my shoulders forward and turned my face away, with tears flowing down my cheeks (with复合结构).She gently picked my bike up, saying in a reassuring tone (现在分词作状语), “I can teach you how to ride.” I raised my head and stared at her in surprised silence. Next hours saw my sister steadily hold my bike when I faltered(无灵主语). She never once let me fall, patiently teaching me how to ride a bike
“I made it,” I shouted with excitement. A wave of happiness rose in my heart. I turned around, showing a warm smile at my sister She gave me an approving nod, with her eyes gleaming with amusement (with复合结构). That was the day when I had a taste of what real sisterly closeness could be like(定语从句;宾语从句). For three hours, three wonderful, happy hours, I learned to ride a bike with her help, which was the perfect harmony I had longed for(定语从句). We still quarrel and have fierce competitions from time to time, but since that day, it has been easier to get along because I know my sister will be there for me when I need her(时间状语从句).

When Heman Bekele was 6, he got a chemistry set for Christmas. He used it to mix up “potions”(魔药). Back then, only his parents paid attention. Now, in 2024, at 15, Heman is used to a lot more people watching his work.
In October 2023, 3M and Discovery Education named Heman the winner of their Young Scientist Challenge. His prize: $25,000. His accomplishment: inventing a soap that could one day treat and prevent some forms of skin cancer.
It could take years before the soap is available to customers. But Heman, a 10th grader at Woodson High, is determined. Over the summer, he spent every weekday in a lab at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. When he goes back to school this fall, he’ll be at the lab less often. But he’ll stick to his dream and try hard to make it come true.
Heman was born in Africa. He remembers seeing people in Africa working in the hot sun without protection for their skin. Because of that, some of them developed skin cancer, a disease caused by too much exposure(暴露) to the sun. Treating the cancer is costly, about $40,000. Heman wondered if there was a cheaper way for people to deal with the disease. He thought of adding a skin cancer medicine called imiquimod to a bar of soap. “What is one thing that everyone can use ” Heman recalls thinking. “Everyone uses soap and water for cleaning. So soap would probably be the best option.”
Heman needed help to bring his idea to life. In 2023, he came across the 3M Challenge and submitted a video explaining his idea. Soon, he received an invitation to the company’s headquarters. He spoke in front of a panel of judges. That day, he was named the winner. Anyone who’s lived through middle school knows those years can be particularly challenging. Some researches show youths across the US are struggling with mental health. Wilson, a researcher at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, and his colleagues carried out a new study to see if taking part in a cycling programme could result in measurable changes in the mind of teenagers.
The study involved more than 1,200 students, ages 11 to 14. Students participated in a cycling class at least three days a week for a period of 6 weeks. They learned cycling safety and skills outdoors while raising their heart rate and just having fun. The students completed standardized questionnaires before and after the programme designed to measure their health.
“We know cycling can benefit the body. Our research shows how it benefits the mind and social relationships as well. Bike riding can be an ideal activity for adolescents because of the benefits it offers,” said Wilson.
“Cycling engages several parts of brain function. You are looking at your hearing, you’re balancing, you’re navigating and turning. Oftentimes, you’re doing it with someone else, so there’s the positive effect of company or group activity,” said Allan Reiss, a professor at Stanford University School of Medicine.
While exercise has powerful mental health benefits, it’s not universal. For example, previous research has shown that teenage girls are at higher risk of mental health problems like depression and anxiety than boys. The current study found that, while middle school girls reported increased well-being after participating in the cycling programme, that increase “may just reach the kind of baseline level for male students”, Wilson said. And other aspects of healthy living are also important, noted Wilson. The study found that teenagers who didn’t limit screen time to a maximum of two hours a day, or who got less than the recommended 8.5 hours of sleep, saw less improvement in their well-being, he said.

We all want to give our kids the best possible advice, but when it comes to what path they should explore after education and what career possibilities are out there, where should we start
“For parents, the most important thing is to keep options open and to understand that equipping them with life skills is important,” says secondary school teacher David Earl.
Your kid will probably have some idea of the terms “growth” and “fixed mindset”(思维模式). Simply put, the central idea of the growth mindset is that intelligence (智力) and ability can be developed, and children who have this idea will try to seek opportunities to push themselves, understanding that they are likely to achieve what they want if they persevere. This challenges a fixed mindset, the idea that a child’s ability is limited and set in advance.
Help your kid prepare for closed doors, tough interviews, rejection letters by encouraging them to embrace them and understand that none of them is failure. Remind them of things they’ve overcome, suggesting they view every negative experience as a chance to learn and grow, rather than an end point.
Employers lay stress on all kinds of life skills, including problem-solving, leadership and creative thinking. So getting your children to think about those skills is helpful. Barclays LifeSkills has listed skills important for individuals in their future careers—communicating through video and audio calls, rather than writing, and working with people from different generations and backgrounds.
Good grades and passing examinations may seem like the most important thing to your kid right now, but try to encourage them to also think of longer-term goals. By thinking of a long-term goal, you may be able to find areas they need to improve.
Thinking about the future can be challenging, but it’s important that your kid understands the next step is just that one small step. It doesn’t have to be anything as huge as what career to pursue or which course to take. This is a team effort: ask teachers, friends, or turn to experts for tips.
( )32.What does the growth mindset stress
A.A child’s ability can be improved.
B.Success comes only from good grades.
C.One’s intelligence stays unchanged.
D.Children should avoid challenges to succeed.
( )33.Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “embrace” in Paragraph 4
A.Ignore. B.Measure.
C.Perform. D.Accept.
( )34.Which of the following might the writer agree with
A.Children should consider long-term goals instead of good grades.
B.It’s parents’ responsibility to choose their children’s future careers.
C.It’s a life skill to get along with people from different backgrounds.
D.Children should be independent of their parents as early as possible.
( )35.Who is the above passage mainly intended for
A.Children. B.Parents.
C.Employers. D.Teachers.

Kids and teenagers who volunteer aren’t just helping their community. They might also be helping themselves. 36. It found that volunteering through school or community groups is connected with better wellness among children and teens.
Kids who participated in community services were 34% more likely to be in good physical health than those who didn’t, the study found. And those who volunteered were 66% more likely to be considered doing well in general. Kids aged 12 and older who volunteered were 25% less likely to have anxiety than those who didn’t. The findings come from survey data (数据) provided by the parents of some 50,000 kids in the United States aged 6 to 17. 37.
Studies like this have limitations. Parents answered questions about their kids’ health and community-service activities. But a parent might not know if their child experiences anxiety or considers themselves to be flourishing (健康的). 38. It can only uncover connection. So it’s impossible to say for sure that volunteering leads to better mental and physical health.
39. In recent years, rates of depression and anxiety have risen among young people. So there’s a clear need for accessible and effective mental health resources (资源). Giving back to the community may be one such resource.
Previous research has also found links between volunteering and well-being among adults. Serving the community seems to help people feel a sense of purpose. 40. Generosity has also been shown to boost happiness and improve physical health. It might be a practice worth cultivating (培养).
A.This type of data also can’t prove cause and effect.
B.Most of the kids showed great interest in the survey.
C.And it makes them feel connected to those around them.
D.But the data comes at an important time for youths’ mental health.
E.About half of those parents reported that their kids did volunteer work.
F.That’s according to a new study published in JAMA Network Open, in May.
G.Volunteering means developing new skills, sharing love, and making new friends.

One of my teachers once asked in class what our favourite memory was. My teacher asked for the moment in which “you felt the best; you felt that you had the world in the palm of your hand”. Some described amazing awards; others described winning a tournament. My answer, however, invited giggles and hesitant smiles. Why Because I felt the best when I first learned how to ride my bike at thirteen. I didn’t mind my classmates’ stares and mockery, because I knew there was more to the story.
My elder sister and I shared a typical sisterly relationship: we couldn’t stand each other. I was an annoyance to her. Any sort of conversation we had usually ended up fighting. Gradually, I started to learn to be totally indifferent; perhaps the silent treatment would get more approval. I was wrong. We soon fell into a sad pattern. I avoided her, and she ignored me. Deep inside, it hurt. So that was how it was between us. She was only a sister in name. I truly believed that we would forever be apart, two housemates without conversation, two strangers without warmth.
I still remember the day I learned to ride a bike. I had received the bike that Christmas, which was great, until I realized that I had no idea how to ride it. My mum had long abandoned any attempt to teach me. I had proven to be a frustrating student. I took it upon myself to learn, a little bit each day. It was no different. I was coming to the end of my daily one-hour torture (折磨). I was so frustrated that I threw my bike aside and began to cry.
Paragraph 1:
I guess that was what caused my sister to come outside.

Paragraph 2:
“I made it,” I shouted with excitement.
