W: Time flies when you’re busy, doesn’t it
Text 4
W: I was so lucky to get a ticket to the concert last night. It was great fun. I went with my father.
M: What did you do after the concert

Text 5
W: Paul, you’re so wet! What happened

Text 6
W: Look, what a fine day it is!
M: Yes. It’s beautiful. Yesterday, it rained all day.
W: Well, sunshine often comes after the rain.
M: It’s certainly a nice day to do something outside. Do you have any good ideas

W: Why don’t we buy them at the ticket office the day before the game What if our plans change
M: It might be at least twice as expensive that way.
W: Oh, I see. I need a babysitter for Helen on that day. Is it on Saturday
M: Yep.
W: It might be challenging. Saturdays tend to be busy.
M: Perhaps you could offer higher pay to the babysitter.
W: I’ll try.
Text 8
W: Hi, Jim. How was your trip to Ashford
M: Great! There is a really beautiful old tower there. It was built in the 10th century, and it was repaired in the 17th century. We also saw some old wooden houses that were built there in the 13th century.
W: Was it expensive to visit the tower
M: It’s seven pounds usually. But it was five pounds for us because there were more than eight people in our group.
W: That’s good. What about lunch
M: There was a hill outside the village, so we climbed up and had it there. We could see the river from the top. Then later we went for a walk in a beautiful small garden.
W: What about the weather
M: Well, we had umbrellas, so we kept dry. It’s a shame it wasn’t sunny.
W: Oh, no. It’s windy here.

Text 10
W: Good morning, everybody. I’m Mary Stone. Today I’m going to share with you my hurricane experience. Well, it was my first hurricane since my family moved here to North Carolina. Before it came, we had continual day warnings of it from the radio, the TV and the newspapers for a week. We had to get everything out of the yard. We didn’t have a basement or a storeroom, so we put the yard furniture and waste containers into the garage. And we bought lots and lots of food and water. We even filled the bath with water. We also checked the flashlights and the small radio in case they couldn’t work. The hurricane was terrible. The rain was so heavy that we couldn’t see out the windows. The wind was about 80 miles an hour and it reached 100 miles an hour at times. It knocked down the power lines and we didn’t have electricity for two days. We were lucky. Only one tree came down in the backyard. I was so scared! Most of the time, I stayed in the bathroom. But my husband was more relaxed. He lit candles and listened to the news on the radio.

第一节
A
根据University of Illinois下的第三段“Your pet can’t be left for extended periods of time, and if there’s evidence that you’ve left it alone due to vacation or illness, the university may remove it.”
根据Harvard University下的第三段“The students told him they were homesick and missed their pets, which encouraged Binfet to establish B. A. R. K as a way of fighting their loneliness.”
根据最后一段“Although you are not allowed to keep your own pet as a student…”
根据第一段“Small for my age, and more of a bookworm than a sports lover, I had suffered that special humiliation of being picked last for various gym teams.”
根据第一段“In the Softball Throw event, I got my first taste of sporting victory. Credit goes to the example of my first coach, my father. He lifted weights every morning at home. He bought us all baseball gloves and hats, and in the warm months, we spent hours playing catch.”
根据最后一段“So, though it shocks some of our friends, that early foundation(基础) evolves in adulthood into a sports and fitness focus, considered important even on vacation.”
根据第一段中“The first time I realized that I had a love for sports competitions was during the field day in elementary school.”和最后一段中“So, though it shocks some of our friends, that early foundation(基础) evolves in adulthood into a sports and fitness focus, considered important even on vacation.” 故选A。
C
根据第一段“The five giant turbines (涡轮机) of the Hywind Scotland wind farm look much like any other offshore wind project, except one major difference—they’re floating.”
根据第二段“It proves to be an important development as the world struggles to meet the net zero carbon emission (排放) targets set in the ‘Paris Agreement’ on climate change.”(在世界努力实现《巴黎协定》设定的净零碳排放目标之际,这被证实是一个重要的研究成果。) C“It helps meet the net zero carbon emission targets.”(它有助于实现净零碳排放目标。)是建造浮动涡轮机的原因之一;根据第四段“Firstly, unlike fixed units, floating turbines can operate in deep waters far from the shoreline, where winds tend to be stronger. Secondly, it can serve offshore areas that are too deep for bottom-fixed turbines.”(首先,与固定涡轮机装置不同,浮动涡轮机可以在远离海岸线的深水区运行,那里的风力往往更强。 B“Winds are stronger in deep waters.”(深水区风力更强。)和选项D“It is difficult to fix turbines in deep offshore areas.”(在深海地区安装涡轮机很困难。) A“It offers a picture of the future.”(它提供了一幅未来的图景。) 故选A项。
根据最后一段“While floating turbines overcome some of the problems that make offshore wind farms in deep waters impossible, there are still challenges that have to be overcome. There are some concerns about what effect floating wind turbines might have on the sea environment. The price of floating wind projects is also still high—almost twice as much as that of the bottom-fixed offshore ones. Another problem is how to avoid the risk of a system breakdown when the wind is blowing too hard.” 故选A项。
根据第一段“Sixteen miles off the coast of northern Scotland, the future of green energy is taking shape. The five giant turbines (涡轮机) of the Hywind Scotland wind farm look much like any other offshore wind project, except one major difference—they’re floating.”
D

They shut their shells immediately after detecting ‘dangerous’ water.” 故选A。
根据第五段中的“If four or more clams close their shells at the same time, an alarm will be triggered (触发) and the water supply will be shut down.”
根据第五段中的“As the number of cattle grows, their waste increases, leading to an enormous population of flies and a worsening environment. Dung Beetles, however, take the waste and bury it. This way, they help improve soil quality.”
根据首段中的“Although these clams are usually regarded as nothing more than delicious food, they work to monitor the local water quality in Poland.”以及倒数第二段中的“Animals have long been helpers for human activities. Farmers in north Queensland, Australia, have been ordering different species of dung beetles (屎壳郎) to help clean up cattle dung, according to ABC News.”和尾段中的“Similarly, cockroaches (蟑螂) are used to deal with kitchen waste at several firms in China, according to a report of The Beijing News in 2018.”

Here are some pet-friendly universities in the UK and US.
University of Illinois
Students are allowed up to two pets in each apartment, as well as a fish tank of no more than 50 gallons.
To keep a pet, you will need to get approval from the Family & Graduate housing department at the University of Illinois. You will have to provide proof that your pet is up to date with its vaccinations(疫苗), and pay a monthly $30 pet fee, which is non-refundable(不可退款的).
Your pet can’t be left for extended periods of time, and if there’s evidence that you’ve left it alone due to vacation or illness, the university may remove it.
Harvard University
With as many as 12 pet-friendly apartments, Harvard is a very pet-friendly university. In Harvard’s pet-friendly apartments, you’re allowed: one cat or one dog, which can’t be over 40 pounds when fully grown. At most, two pet birds.
University of British Columbia
Students can take advantage of the university’s B.A.R.K programme, which uses the calming power of therapy dogs to help them.
B.A.R.K started at the University of British Columbia, after an assistant professor called Dr John-Tyler Binfet noticed that he couldn’t walk across campus without students running over to play with his dog, Frances. The students told him they were homesick and missed their pets, which encouraged Binfet to establish B.A.R.K as a way of fighting their loneliness.
University of Oxford
The University of Oxford is famous for its resident pets, who happily wander around college grounds. Many Oxford colleges have their own tortoise and take part in the annual Corpus Christi tortoise race.
Although you are not allowed to keep your own pet as a student, several Oxford colleges hold dog petting and walking therapy sessions.

The first time I realized that I had a love for sports competitions was during the field day in elementary school. Small for my age, and more of a bookworm than a sports lover, I had suffered that special humiliation of being picked last for various gym teams. The field day, which focused on individual (个体的) skills, was different. In the Softball Throw event, I got my first taste of sporting victory. Credit goes to the example of my first coach, my father. He lifted weights every morning at home. He bought us all baseball gloves and hats, and in the warm months, we spent hours playing catch.
Once I got to sixth grade and switched to private school, our entire student body was assigned to either the Red or the White team. Throughout the year, we competed against each other in various games and exercises for points. I eventually became president of The Committee of Games. I also played on the field hockey team and the basketball team. And at home, playing tennis, skating, skiing and biking were simply normal things we did. During the break time, magazines were also quite popular for us teens. These regularly featured articles on physical exercise. Somehow, my college roommate and I took up the habit of completing Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) exercises every day, a practice that continued into my marriage, when we had no spare money to use to join a gym.
So, though it shocks some of our friends, that early foundation (基础) evolves in adulthood into a sports and fitness focus, considered important even on vacation. I still love reading and the arts, too. As far as I’m concerned, life is the richest with my feet in both worlds.

Sixteen miles off the coast of northern Scotland, the future of green energy is taking shape. The five giant turbines (涡轮机) of the Hywind Scotland wind farm look much like any other offshore wind project, except one major difference—they’re floating.
While traditional offshore turbines sit on metal and concrete towers fixed into the seabed, Hywind’s turbines rest on floating frames that move up and down with the waves. It proves to be an important development as the world struggles to meet the net zero carbon emission (排放) targets set in the “Paris Agreement” on climate change.
To cut those emissions, green electricity will need to be at the main source of global energy, according to the International Energy Agency. It says that by 2040, half of the world’s energy needs will have to be met by electricity produced in a net zero way. Projects like Hywind’s floating wind farm offer a picture of what the future could look like.
The reasons for this can be listed as follows. Firstly, unlike fixed units, floating turbines can operate in deep waters far from the shoreline, where winds tend to be stronger. Secondly, it can serve offshore areas that are too deep for bottom-fixed turbines. “In places like Korea, Japan and California, you can only manage a certain amount of offshore wind, or maybe even none at all, so floating turbines are the only option in the longer term,” explains Henrik Steisdal, a Danish inventor at the forefront of floating wind innovation.
While floating turbines overcome some of the problems that make offshore wind farms in deep waters impossible, there are still challenges that have to be overcome. There are some concerns about what effect floating wind turbines might have on the sea environment. The price of floating wind projects is also still high—almost twice as much as that of the bottom-fixed offshore ones. Another problem is how to avoid the risk of a system breakdown when the wind is blowing too hard.

A group of clams (河蚌) recently caught people’s attention after an article was posted by China Science Communication online. Although these clams are usually regarded as nothing more than delicious food, they work to monitor the local water quality in Poland.
Gruba Kaska pumping station, which stands in the River Wisla, helps provide millions of liters of water to Warsaw, the Capital of Poland. However, one particular concern for the water quality has been heavy metals, and researchers sought help from nature to solve this problem.
Clams are sensitive (敏感的) to pollutants in their environment as they filter (过滤) water to feed on micro-organisms (微生物). They shut their shells immediately after detecting “dangerous” water.
Based on this, the researchers selected eight clams at a time and recorded the natural opening of their shells. After the clam “employees” become used to the local water, they are placed in a specially designed container. With sensors stuck onto their shells, the clams are connected to the system that records how wide the shells are open.
If four or more clams close their shells at the same time, an alarm will be triggered (触发) and the water supply will be shut down. The result is reliable because the creatures are considering many different factors at the same time, according to ZME Science.Animals have long been helpers for human activities. Farmers in north Queensland, Australia, have been ordering different species of dung beetles (屎壳郎) to help clean up cattle dung, according to ABC News. As the number of cattle grows, their waste increases, leading to an enormous population of flies and a worsening environment. Dung Beetles, however, take the waste and bury it. This way, they help improve soil quality.
Similarly, cockroaches (蟑螂) are used to deal with kitchen waste at several firms in China, according to a report of The Beijing News in 2018. About 300 million cockroaches are fed 15 tons of food waste on a daily basis, and they themselves are a good protein resource for livestock (牲畜).
( )32.Why did researchers look for help from clams to monitor water quality
A.They are good at sensing pollutants.
B.They can help clear heavy metals.
C.They are inexpensive and easy to find.
D.They live on micro-organisms.
( )33.What will happen when four or more clams close their shells at the same time
A.The clams will be removed from their container.
B.The system recording the clams will break down.
C.The sensors on their shells will be changed.
D.The water supply will be turned off.
( )34.How do dung beetles help improve soil quality in north Queensland, Australia
A.By digesting harmful waste.
B.By burying cattle dung in the soil.
C.By producing fertilizer (肥料) themselves.
D.By controlling the loss of soil nutrients.
( )35.What can we infer from the text
A.Cockroaches are harmful to the environment.
B.Dung beetles can solve all environmental problems.
C.Clams are the only animals that can detect water quality.
D.Animals can play a role in solving some human problems.

Cats are a mysterious kind of animal—there is more passing in their minds than we know of. I can’t agree more with this because of my recent experience.
It was the Sunday before Labour Day, and I was tired after spending the day on a picnic in a relative’s garden. I looked out of the window before climbing onto bed. Stars filled the night sky, and crickets (蟋蟀) gently sang in the darkness. All seemed right with the world.
My big, old black-and-white cat, Oreo, lay on the foot of my bed where he slept every night, keeping my feet warm. I climbed onto bed and immediately fell into a deep sleep.
I had just fallen asleep when Oreo woke me up by walking over my stomach. I looked at the bedside clock: 3:10 am. I had no idea why Oreo was troubling me. He’d never done that before unless I overslept in the morning, but that usually happened at 8:00 am, not in the middle of the night.
I pushed Oreo off me, rolled over and pulled the blanket (毯子) over my head. But Oreo didn’t stop. He stepped on my head and began to make noises loudly.
“Oreo,” I said. “Go back to sleep.”
But Oreo wouldn’t stop. He kept walking on my stomach and legs, continuing to trouble me. Suddenly, there was a crash of thunder (雷), and I sat up on the bed and looked out of the window. Lightning filled the sky. Strong winds blew through the window. Rain started to come down hard, making it almost impossible to see the trees in the yard. Soon the wind was picking up and the branches of the trees were moving violently (强烈地). A terrible storm had started.
Seeing the sight, I was struck with horror. Thinking that it was not safe to stay in the house, I climbed out of bed, put on my clothes, and held Oreo in my arms.
