W: Then it’s the second period. You’ve got four more weeks to go. It’ll be time to increase to five or six long workouts a week.
M: Wow, that’s a lot of work to do. I’m afraid I can’t manage it.
W: But you’ll be fitter after the first period, so it’ll be easy for you to do that.
M: I really hope so. Maybe starting from Week 3, I’ll change the exercising time to make it more interesting.
Text 10
W: Today, we will talk about a different school. In Boulder, the United States, there is a school called the Boulder Outdoor Survival School(BOSS). BOSS is the world’s oldest survival school. It teaches people how to survive outside without tents, or even backpacks. In Bryce Canyon, the days are very hot and the nights are very cold. There are no heaters to keep warm. Not everyone wants to go to this kind of school and try living without modern inventions like TVs, and computers. Students at BOSS quickly learn that staying positive, working hard, and trying new things are important if they want to complete the training. The people who go to survival camps don’t just learn to camp. Students at BOSS go into the wild for days, and sometimes weeks, to learn how nature can give them everything they need to survive. They learn how to find fresh water, make a fire, find food to eat and use knives. Most of all, BOSS students learn to survive in the wild without harming the environment. After these people go back to the real world, they may never use these talents again. Even if they don’t, they will always know that they can live without computers, electricity, and cellphones—even if it is only for a few days!

C
根据画线词上文“It’s reported that about 20 percent of the Amazon rainforest has disappeared during the past 50 years.”
根据第二段“Another case in point is a big snake called the bushmaster that lives in the Amazon. Today, millions of people use medicines made from its venom (毒液) to treat high blood pressure. So they have longer, fuller, and more productive lives.”
根据第三段“In the 1960s, there was only one highway in the entire Amazon. That’s an area as large as the continental United States with one highway and three million people. Today, there are between 30 million to 40 million people, countless roads, and about 20 percent forests have been cut down. But on the plus side, 50 years ago there were only two national parks and a national forest and a reserve in Brazil. Today, more than 50 percent of the Amazon is under some form of protection.” 故选A。
根据最后一段“We want to see more shared planning between the departments of transportation, energy, agriculture, and the other industries in the area. We think Amazon cities can have higher quality of life and keep people in existing cities so there’s less reason to deforest.”
根据第一段中“Scientists aren’t 100% sure, but most probably lionfish found their way to the waters because of their beauty and some thoughtless aquarium (水族馆) owners who most probably released the fish into the ocean in Florida.”
根据第二段中“Besides, there are more females than males, and they lay more than 2 million eggs every year. This has knock-on effects on the local underwater wildlife…so the cleaner fish’s work is especially important for the health of a coral reef’s population.”
根据最后一段中“But still, there’s a chance that all these activities are just tackling the tip of the iceberg. We can only see the effects of them in shallow water. But lionfish have been found as deep as 300 metres. Nobody knows how big the populations are down there.”
根据第一段中“In 1985, lionfish were seen in Florida for the first time. It was really a surprise because Florida is half a world away from their native place in the Pacific Ocean. 15 years later, the lionfish spread uncontrollably and became a danger for coral reefs(珊瑚礁) and their neighbours.”

It’s key to create and practise an emergency plan with your family so that everyone knows what to do during a time of an earthquake.”
39.G 由上文“Learn earthquake emergency plans at your workplace, children’s school or daycare centre. Disaster can strike at any moment.”可知,灾难随时可能发生,G选项“So it is necessary to learn how to prepare for an earthquake in any environment”符合语境,与前文形成因果关系,强调了在不同环境下学习地震预防的必要性。故选G项。
40.A 由下文“Earthquakes usually last around one minute but if the damage is big enough, you could be trapped for a much longer period of time. You should have a bag containing medical equipment, food, water, flashlights and so on.” 故选A。

第一节
One possible version:
Family cycling trip
Aimed at enriching our daily life and building up our body, a 5-kilometre-long family cycling trip was launched by my parents.
As scheduled, we set out at 8:00 am from our home to the park. We saw many beautiful sights along the way. It was a still, sweet day of early summer; the leaves seemed greener, the flowers brighter, and the birds merrier. Although all of us were extremely tired, we were very happy.
The activity was highly spoken of, because not only did it provide a chance for us to exercise but also it made us become a more united family.
One possible version:
To our surprise, they nodded without thinking. They quickly found some ropes and tools. And they all, including a sixty-year-old man, two tall sons, their wives and several cheerful children, followed us. When reaching the beach (状语从句的省略), some of us pushed the car while (并列句) others pulled it out with all strength. We tried hard, but the car didn’t move. Just then, my father saw that many faces of this family were covered with sweat (宾语从句), but they didn’t leave. Finally, after we tried many times, the car was pulled out of the sand.
My dad was so grateful that he handed some money to the family to thank them. However, they refused. Instead, they invited us to have a meal and offered to dry our coats. At their insistence, we returned to their home again, where the women went to prepare the meal while the men lit a big fire using firewood The family offered us clean coats and hung our wet ones near the fire. We sat around the fire, and soon felt warm. Later, we enjoyed their delicious meal. That experience made me know that there are many helpful people who don’t expect anything in return

Hidden London: the Exhibition
Visit an “abandoned” Tube station underworld and discover what secrets are hidden beneath our busy streets in our new Hidden London exhibition at London Transport Museum!
Hidden London: the Exhibition takes you on a journey of some of London’s most secret spaces in the world’s oldest underground system. These “forgotten” parts of the Tube network have incredible stories to tell about Britain’s wartime past.
You can enjoy the largest number of rare photos and objects from disused stations that have been brought together in one location.
Discover stories about how Churchill took shelter at the height of the Blitz deep underground at Down Street station. See how shelterers lived down at Clapham South station, where they slept and how they kept entertained.
You can also explore other locations that we have recreated in our Global Gallery, including the historic abandoned ticket hall at Aldwych station with an original 1930s ticket office.
The exhibition uncovers why these “lost” parts of the underground network exist. Changes in population, economic priorities and political pressures have all led to spaces being abandoned. But they rarely stay that way. While some sections of the Tube system lie “forgotten”, many have been repurposed for new activities and are used for special Hidden London tours, growing salad leaves, and for filming locations, including Charing Cross, which featured in Skyfall (2012).

When Sam Fisher took his two young sons and their cousin on a hike in the Badlands of North Dakota, he was probably expecting a day of sightseeing and light exercise. What he could not have expected, however, was the group coming across the remains of a young Tyrannosaurus rex (霸王龙) that had lived millions of years ago.
Fisher and the boys were surely excited by their discovery, but they didn’t know what to do with the fossil (化石). Fisher sent a photo to his former classmate, Dr Lyson, an expert in the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Then, Dr Lyson arrived on the scene with a skilled team to dig up the fossil. Together, they unearthed the remains of the teenage Tyrannosaurus rex.
Their find was considered as an “incredible discovery” by the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. It is unusual to find complete Tyrannosaurus rex fossils, and even more unusual to find the remains of a young one, so Dr Lyson was excited when he realized what they had unearthed. The fossil, called “Teen Rex”, is between 12 and 14 years old at the time of death. Even though it was still growing, the dinosaur already weighed 3,500 pounds and was 25 feet long, though these impressive measurements still put it at about half the size of a fully developed Tyrannosaurus rex.
“These boys have made an incredible dinosaur discovery that advances science and deepens our understanding of the natural world,” says Dr Lyson. “I’m excited for museum guests to dig into the ‘Teen Rex Discovery’ experience, which I think will inspire the imagination and wonder, not only in our community, but around the world!”
The fossil will be on display as part of the temporary (临时的) Discovering Teen Rex exhibition, which will open at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science next month. In addition to the exhibition, the museum will also be screening a new 40-minute documentary T.REX.

It’s reported that about 20 percent of the Amazon rainforest has disappeared during the past 50 years. Deforestation is not only threatening the millions of unique plant and animal species native to the Amazon River area, but it’s affecting humans worldwide. When it comes to the protection of the Amazon, it’s hard for many people to relate because they don’t feel connected to the area. There are actually a lot of direct connections, no matter how far away we are.
A connection that affects everyone on the planet is climate (气候) change. Planting new trees in the forest is basically a way of removing CO2 from the air. Rainforests have a carbon (碳) reduction nearly equal to half of what is in the air. About half of that is in the Amazon. Another case in point is a big snake called the bushmaster that lives in the Amazon. Today, millions of people use medicines made from its venom (毒液) to treat high blood pressure. So they have longer, fuller, and more productive lives.
In the 1960s, there was only one highway in the entire Amazon. That’s an area as large as the continental United States with one highway and three million people. Today, there are between 30 million to 40 million people, countless roads, and about 20 percent forests have been cut down. But on the plus side, 50 years ago there were only two national parks and a national forest and a reserve in Brazil. Today, more than 50 percent of the Amazon is under some form of protection.
“There’s been a lot of damage done and forest lost, but nothing is gone until it’s gone,” noted National Geographic explorer Dr Thomas Lovejoy. “We want to see more shared planning between the departments of transportation, energy, agriculture, and the other industries in the area. We think Amazon cities can have higher quality of life and keep people in existing cities so there’s less reason to deforest.”

( )30.How does Paragraph 3 mainly develop
A.By making comparisons.
B.By listing reasons.
C.By explaining a definition.
D.By making a summary.
( )31.What is Dr Thomas’ attitude towards the future of the Amazon rainforest
A.Doubtful. B.Worried.
C.Positive. D.Uncaring.

In 1985, lionfish were seen in Florida for the first time. It was really a surprise because Florida is half a world away from their native place in the Pacific Ocean. 15 years later, the lionfish spread uncontrollably and became a danger for coral reefs (珊瑚礁) and their neighbours. Scientists aren’t 100% sure, but most probably lionfish found their way to the waters because of their beauty and some thoughtless aquarium (水族馆) owners who most probably released the fish into the ocean in Florida.
They are deadly to their surroundings because of their hunger. Lionfish can eat an impressive 90% of their body weight every day. And the lionfish isn’t picky. More than 100 species are on their menu. With such a large need, lionfish take food away from commercially profitable fishes, affecting local communities that depend on this kind of fishing. Besides, there are more females than males, and they lay more than 2 million eggs every year. This has knock-on effects on the local underwater wildlife. As for example, when lionfish eat too many cleaner fish. Cleaner fish eat parasites (寄生虫) off a lot of species, and parasites can cause diseases that lead to less diversity (多样性) in the ocean, so the cleaner fish’s work is especially important for the health of a coral reef’s population.
Scientists are trying to control the damage by calling on people to put them on their dinner table. Lionfish may be the perfect invaders, but they have one weakness—the way they taste. In addition, several ocean protection groups are running removal projects in which divers and fishermen are encouraged to hunt lionfish. But still, there’s a chance that all these activities are just tackling the tip of the iceberg. We can only see the effects of them in shallow water. But lionfish have been found as deep as 300 metres. Nobody knows how big the populations are down there.
( )32.What likely brought lionfish to Florida
A.Climate change. B.Human activity.
C.Ocean movement. D.Wildlife protection.
( )33.What is an effect that lionfish have on the ocean
A.Causing the coral reefs to disappear.
B.Eating all the fish in the ocean.
C.Taking food away from people.
D.Breaking the ocean living system.
( )34.Which best explains the phrase “tackling the tip of the iceberg” in the last paragraph
A.Getting straight to the point.
B.Solving the problem completely.
C.Touching the surface of the problem.
D.Being totally useless to solve the problem.
( )35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.Hungry fish are increasing fast
B.Act now to protect ocean wildlife
C.Ocean wildlife is in great danger
D.Lionfish take over the ocean in Florida

My parents decided to drive me to the countryside for relaxation (放松) after a busy month. Then, on a Saturday morning, my dad started his car and we set off with great expectation.
Before long, we left the noisy city and came to the mountains. There were few vehicles on the road and the trees alongside were pretty. We felt so excited! As a few hours passed we drove onto a narrow road. And minutes later, we found a river not far away from the road. The beach was very wide, and we wanted to have a rest there for a while. So my dad turned our car and drove towards it. Soon, we were driving on the sandy beach. Our car wheels were struggling in the increasingly soft sand. But my dad wanted to get closer to the river.
Before he regretted it, our car had got stuck in the sand. My dad tried to turn around or move back but the car didn’t move. We were trapped in the middle of nowhere. What was worse, it began raining. We got out of the car and tried to push it, but failed. We were tired and our hair and coats were a little wet. But the car only sank further into the sand.
Anxiously, we walked to the road, hoping to stop a vehicle for help. But after waiting for a long time, there wasn’t one vehicle passing. Just when we were helpless, we saw a farmhouse not far away. “Can they help us ” I asked. My dad was doubtful. Still, we reached there, and found it was a big family. They seemed poor but friendly. My dad told them our problem and begged them to help us pull our car out.
Paragraph 1:
To our surprise, they nodded without thinking.

Paragraph 2:
My dad was so grateful that he handed some money to the family to thank them.
