根据第一段中“Bruce, a kea (啄羊鹦鹉), misses his upper beak (鸟喙)…”和第二段中“Bruce has been missing the upper part of his beak since at least 2012 when he was rescued and sent to live at the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve in Christchurch.”
根据第四段中“‘We were like, “Well, that’s weird,”’ says Bastos.”
根据第五段“First, Bruce selects the proper tool, rolling pebbles (鹅卵石) around in his mouth with his tongue and spitting out candidates until he finds one he likes, usually something pointy. Next, he holds the pebble between his tongue and lower beak. Then, he picks through his feathers.”
根据最后一段中Bastos的话“It seems like he just innovated this tool use for himself. It demonstrates really flexible intelligence because it means he’s been able to create his own solution to a problem unique to him…”
结合小标题“Think twice before landscaping.”与本段最后一句“If you must landscape your yard, do so in a way that won’t drive away native wildlife.”可知,本段是建议大家在改造住所时,要考虑到对周围野生动物的影响,由下文“But unless you’re confronting a genuine safety issue, remember that what’s unpleasant to you is sweet home to squirrels, birds, worms and other animals that you might not even know are there.”
2.B 后一句“Outdoor cats, however, don’t think twice about killing wild birds.” 。故选B。
3.C 根据小标题“Don’t feed any animals but birds.”可知,要保护动物,我们就要克制住给野生动物喂食的想法,结合前一句“That deer that wanders into your backyard might look hungry and helpless.”
4.A 前一句“Feeding wild birds, on the other hand, is OK as long as you don’t have outdoor cats and you provide a meal in keeping with the bird’s natural diet.” 故选A。
5.E 此段的小标题“Clean up litter (not only your own).”告诉我们,要保护野生动植物,我们要做的不仅是清理自己产生的垃圾,上文“You should go the extra mile and pick up cans and bottles left by other people.”
Ⅲ.第一节
One possible version:
Dear Johnson,
What a pleasant surprise to hear that you would like to visit China this summer vacation! Knowing that you are interested in my hometown, I am so glad to introduce it to you.
My hometown, Beijing, is a charming city located in the north of China. As a political and economic centre, Beijing not only has the largest number of skyscrapers but also is home to Peking Opera, cross talk and hutong culture. Besides, the Great Wall and the Palace Museum are widely recognized places of interest at home and abroad. Standing on the Great Wall and visiting the Palace Museum, you will be amazed by the ancient people’s wisdom and hardship in the construction.
I suppose you will have a good time in Beijing. Looking forward to your coming.
Yours,
Li Hua
One possible version:
When the parents finally announced the news, Mia hesitated. “I am bound to lose my sight. It’s meaningless to start the journey,” Mia murmured, with her head down. Observing Mia’s low mood, Lemay took Mia in her arms, kissing her lightly on the cheek. Softly and slowly, Lemay pictured the vast plains, the crystal clear lakes, and the snow-capped mountains that she had witnessed during her previous travels and said: “Honey, it’s not what we see with our own eyes that lasts, but what we preserve in our memory. We hope to keep you company to beautiful places as many as possible so as to colour the rest of your life in your mind.” Having inspired by what her mother said, Mia cheered herself up and prepared to set out.
As their family journey went on, Mia became fascinated by these unforgettable visual experiences. Among them, what impressed her most was the scenic spots in nature. With her parents’ company and encouragement, she visited thick and wild forests to see the real elephants as her parents had expected. On the plains, elephants were eating grass, ears flapping lazily as they moved slowly. It was indeed the greatest show in her mind. At that moment, Mia felt that she was so lucky to fill her visual memory with the beautiful images. No matter how hard her life was going to be, the trip would shine in her mind forever.Period Five Writing

The panda, native to China, is one of the rarest animals in the world and is highly cherished by people globally. Long ago, there were many pandas in China. However, with the destruction of the natural balance and the warming climate, the panda population has sharply declined. Fortunately, due to a variety of protective measures taken over the past decades, the number of pandas in China is now increasing. There are now so many pandas that some have been sent to other countries, allowing people there to enjoy them as well.
Currently, the largest nature park for pandas in China is located in Sichuan, where a research centre for wildlife exists. Scientists hope that someday they will have enough pandas to set free and allow them to live in the wild again.

Bruce, a kea (啄羊鹦鹉), misses his upper beak (鸟喙), giving the olive green parrot a look of surprise. But scientists are the astonished ones.
The typical kea has a long, sharp beak, perfect for digging insects out of rotten logs or ripping roots from the ground in New Zealand’s forests. Bruce has been missing the upper part of his beak since at least 2012 when he was rescued and sent to live at the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve in Christchurch.
The defect prevents Bruce from searching for food on his own. Keeping his feathers clean also becomes an impossible task. In 2021 when comparative psychologist Amalia Bastos arrived at the reserve with colleagues to study keas, the zookeepers reported something odd: Bruce had seemingly figured out how to use small stones to preen
“We were like, ‘Well, that’s weird,’” says Bastos. Over nine days, the team kept a close eye on Bruce, quickly taking videos if he started cleaning his feathers. It turned out that Bruce had indeed invented his own way to preen, the researchers reported in Scientific Reports.
First, Bruce selects the proper tool, rolling pebbles (鹅卵石) around in his mouth with his tongue and spitting out candidates until he finds one he likes, usually something pointy. Next, he holds the pebble between his tongue and lower beak. Then, he picks through his feathers.
“It’s crazy because the behaviour was not there from the wild,” Bastos says. Bruce was too young to have learned how to preen when he arrived at Willowbank. No other bird in the reserve uses pebbles in this way. “It seems like he just innovated this tool use for himself. It demonstrates really flexible intelligence because it means he’s been able to create his own solution to a problem unique to him,” Bastos says.

A.Bruce was born in a reserve.
B.Bruce has a physical disability.
C.Keas are an endangered species.
D.New Zealand is the only habitat of keas.
( )2. What did the researchers initially think of Bruce’s behaviour
A.It was normal.
B.It was dangerous.
C.It was very strange.
D.It was totally unacceptable.
( )3. What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about
A.What led to Bruce’s special behaviour.
B.How Bruce uses tools to preen himself.
C.Why Bruce needs to keep feathers clean.
D.How zookeepers rescued Bruce from danger.
( )4. Which of the following can best describe Bruce according to Bastos
A.A creative player.

In the face of wildlife loss and habitat destruction, it’s easy to feel powerless to improve. But any action you take, no matter how small, will help restore the world to its natural balance. Here are four things you can do to help wildlife.
Think twice before landscaping.
1. But unless you’re confronting a genuine safety issue, remember that what’s unpleasant to you is sweet home to squirrels, birds, worms and other animals that you might not even know are there. If you must landscape your yard, do so in a way that won’t drive away native wildlife.
Keep your cats indoors.
It’s ironic that many people who claim to love wildlife have no problem allowing their cats to roam freely outside. Cats are animals, too. 2. Outdoor cats, however, don’t think twice about killing wild birds. In case you’re thinking about “warning” the birds by attaching a bell to your cat’s collar, don’t bother: birds have an inborn tendency to flee loud and startling noises, not jingling pieces of metal.
Don’t feed any animals but birds.
That deer that wanders into your backyard might look hungry and helpless. 3. Giving food to animals accustoms them to human contact, but not all human beings are as warm-hearted as you are. Feeding wild birds, on the other hand, is OK as long as you don’t have outdoor cats and you provide a meal in keeping with the bird’s natural diet. 4.
Clean up litter (not only your own).
If you’re concerned about protecting wildlife, you know better than to litter. But it’s not enough to keep your own yard or picnic area clean. You should go the extra mile and pick up cans and bottles left by other people. 5.
A.Choose nuts and seeds rather than processed bread.
B.It seems cruel to keep them shut up inside the house.
C.However, if you feed it, you won’t be doing it any favours.
D.Most people don’t want wild animals to destroy their roses.
E.Small animals can easily get trapped in or injured by this litter.
F.If you have the space, establishing a “mini meadow (草地)” as a border or boundary area is another effective way to attract birds, as well as beneficial insects.
G.If you have just purchased a house or a piece of land, you might be tempted to chop (砍) down unsightly trees.

When Canadian couple Edith Lemay and Sebastien Pelletier first noticed that their daughter Mia was having visual problems, she was just three years old.
A few years after they first took her to see a specialist, Mia was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa (视网膜色素变性), a rare genetic disease that causes a loss or decline in vision over time. There’s nothing they could really do, because there was currently no cure or effective treatment to slow down the progression of retinitis pigmentosa.
Once they came to terms with the news, the couple focused their attention on helping their child to build the skills that she’d need to lead her way through life. When Mia’s specialist suggested that they should assist her with “visual memories”, Lemay realized that there was one truly incredible way that they could do just that for her.
“I thought, ‘I’m not going to show her an elephant in a book. I’m going to take her to see a real elephant,’” she explains. “And I’m going to fill her visual memory with the best, most beautiful images.”
She and her husband soon began making plans to spend a year travelling around the globe with their kid. They thought there were great things to do at home, but there’s nothing better than travelling where they could feast their eyes on the wonderful scenery.
After gathering up enough savings, they soon began their family journey with an in-depth itinerary (行程) that involved travelling to lots of places all over the world.

Outdoor cats, however, don't think twice about
killing wild birds.”
出来,它们会杀死野生鸟类,且选项中keep them shut up inside
the house呼应本段标题“Keep your cats indoors.”(把你的猫关在屋
里。)。故选B。

helpless.”

故选A。

Yours,
Li Hua
One possible version:
Dear Johnson,
What a pleasant surprise to hear that you would like to
visit China this summer vacation! Knowing that you are
interested in my hometown, I am so glad to introduce it to you.
My hometown, Beijing, is a charming city located in the
north of China. As a political and economic centre, Beijing not
only has the largest number of skyscrapers but also is home
to Peking Opera, cross talk and hutong culture. Besides, the
Great Wall and the Palace Museum are widely recognized places
of interest at home and abroad. Standing on the Great Wall
and visiting the Palace Museum, you will be amazed by the
ancient people's wisdom and hardship in the construction.
I suppose you will have a good time in Beijing. Looking
forward to your coming.
Yours,
Li Hua. .
When Canadian couple Edith Lemay and Sebastien Pelletier
first noticed that their daughter Mia was having visual problems,
she was just three years old.
A few years after they first took her to see a specialist, Mia
was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa (视网膜色素变性), a rare
genetic disease that causes a loss or decline in vision over time.
There's nothing they could really do, because there was
currently no cure or effective treatment to slow down the
progression of retinitis pigmentosa.
Once they came to terms with the news, the couple
focused their attention on helping their child to build the skills
that she'd need to lead her way through life. When Mia's
specialist suggested that they should assist her with “visual
memories”, Lemay realized that there was one truly incredible
way that they could do just that for her.
“I thought, ‘I'm not going to show her an elephant in a
book. I'm going to take her to see a real elephant,’” she
explains. “And I'm going to fill her visual memory with the best,
most beautiful images.”
She and her husband soon began making plans to spend a
year travelling around the globe with their kid. They thought
there were great things to do at home, but there's nothing
better than travelling where they could feast their eyes on the
wonderful scenery.
After gathering up enough savings, they soon began their
family journey with an in-depth itinerary (行程) that involved
travelling to lots of places all over the world.
Paragraph 1:
When the parents finally announced the news, Mia hesitated.

Paragraph 2:
As their family journey went on, Mia became fascinated by
these unforgettable visual experiences._____________________________

One possible version:
When the parents finally announced the news, Mia hesitated.
“I am bound to lose my sight. It's meaningless to start the
journey,” Mia murmured, with her head down. Observing Mia's
low mood, Lemay took Mia in her arms, kissing her lightly
on the cheek. Softly and slowly, Lemay pictured the vast
plains, the crystal clear lakes, and the snow-capped mountains
that she had witnessed during her previous travels and said:
“Honey, it's not what we see with our own eyes that lasts, but
what we preserve in our memory. We hope to keep you
company to beautiful places as many as possible so as to
colour the rest of your life in your mind.” Having inspired by
what her mother said, Mia cheered herself up and prepared
to set out.
As their family journey went on, Mia became fascinated by
these unforgettable visual experiences. Among them, what
impressed her most was the scenic spots in nature. With her
parents' company and encouragement, she visited thick and
wild forests to see the real elephants as her parents had
expected. On the plains, elephants were eating grass, ears
flapping lazily as they moved slowly. It was indeed the greatest
show in her mind. At that moment, Mia felt that she was so
lucky to fill her visual memory with the beautiful images. No
matter how hard her life was going to be, the trip would shine
in her mind forever.
