The first week of September was a week that I had been expecting all summer. I didn’t want summer to end, but I was eager to go to high school for my first week.
When I got to school on the morning of the first day I realized how large the school was, and how many students went there. I ended up in the wrong classroom because of the size of the school. Luckily, a kind senior showed up and guided me to my classroom before I was late. I was happy to see that in a class of unfamiliar faces, the only open seat was next to my good friend, Jimmy. My science teacher seemed like a good teacher.
After finishing four periods, I didn’t feel too bad. However, the fifth period changed everything. I didn’t feel ready after all. My literature teacher is Mr. Smith. He told us that we would have to write 40 essays(文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this term. I love reading and writing, but come on, 40 ESSAYS AP-level books Now I was anxious.
The courses in high school seem like they’re going to get much harder, but they haven’t yet. Even though my classes look hard, they look really exciting too.
The first week passed quickly. Although a lot of things were overwhelming(令人不知所措的): the size of the campus, the crowds and the seniors, having a totally different experience that I had never had before was really exciting.
Now, I’m really happy about high school. I have lots of friends in my classes, I really like my teachers and I’m meeting new people.

Running on the beach is completely different from running on the pavement, a track or trails with soft surfaces.
For starters, sand can be a challenge because it has an uneven(不平的) surface and constantly moves under your feet. As you push off, you’re going to lose some of your push as the sand moves, so you’re not going to be able to push yourself forward as you would on a track or pavement! But this unevenness has an upside: it gives your body an extra workout, forcing you to exercise the muscles that don’t get as much use as runs on firm surfaces.
You also might feel painful afterward because beaches tend to slope(倾斜) downward, toward the water. If you’re going for a long run on the beach, you might notice that one side of your body including your ankle, leg or knee might feel more painful because you’re putting more pressure on it due to the slope.
Some beach runners tend to run barefoot. However, if you’re not used to barefoot running, start slowly and run short distances at first. That’s because running barefoot uses different muscles than running with shoes does, and it’s important to strengthen these muscles and adapt your feet.
Despite these challenges, running on sand can be a smart choice for athletes because running on it can decrease the bad influence on your body during high-intensity workouts. This could potentially lead to less muscle damage and less pain. Women had less myoglobin (肌红蛋白), which can cause muscle pain, in their blood after running on the sand than they did after running on grass. This suggests running on softer ground surfaces, such as sand, may reduce muscle damage.
8. Why do the starters feel hard while running on sand
A. Because the surface is even. B. Because the beach is near water.
C. Because the runners lack muscles. D. Because the surface of the sand is soft.
9. Which of the following best explains “an upside” underlined in Paragraph 2
A. A positive aspect. B. A wide roadside.
C. An extra workout. D. A bad influence.
10. What should runners pay attention to when trying barefoot running
A. Starting quickly. B. Not running too long.
C. Using the same muscles. D. Increasing their paces.
11. How does the author explain the benefit of beach running to female runners
A. By listing data. B. By giving examples.
C. By making comparison. D. By offering facts.
D
The expression “the calm before the storm” is usually used to describe a peaceful period just before a very stressful situation or a tense argument. British sailors invented the phrase in the late 1600s; they noted that before certain storms the seas would seem to become still and the winds would drop.
Science has given us the reason. According to US website HowStuffWorks, a calm period occurs because many storms, tornadoes and hurricanes draw in all the warm and humid (湿热的) air from the surrounding area. As this air rises into the storm clouds, it cools and acts as “fuel for the storm, like petrol in a car”. Once the storm clouds have taken all the energy they can take from the air, the air is pushed out by the top of the storm clouds and falls back down to ground level. As the air goes down, it becomes warm and dry. Warm and dry air is stable(稳定的), so once it covers an area, it causes a calm period before the storm.
The Weather Network has a tip for working out how far away a storm is. First count how many seconds there are between a flash of lightning and a clap of thunder, probably three seconds equal one kilometer. So, for example, if you count nine seconds, the storm is about three kilometers away. A good method is that if your count is below 30 seconds, you should seek shelter straight away.
However, due to the complexity(复杂性) of storm system, not all storms take place after calm. Given the right conditions, some storms announce themselves with heavy rain and strong winds.
So, you’d better keep yourself updated with weather reports for any predictions regarding a coming storm in your area. That’s the most reliable way to predict the storm.
12. What is the main idea of Paragraph 2
A. How the storm takes its energy.
B. Why a peaceful period happens before some storms.
C. Why storms, tornadoes and hurricanes are different.
D. What danger storms may cause.
13. If you count 12 seconds between a lightening flash and a thunder clap, how far is probably the storm
A. Three kilometers away. B. Four kilometers away.
C. Five kilometers away. D. Six kilometers away.
14. What is suggested to predict a coming storm
A. Rely on your personal experience. B. Stay at the shelter all the time.
C. Follow the latest forecast. D. Keep yourself in your area.
15. What can we learn from the text
A. Heavy storms don’t usually last long.
B. Weather reports often fail to predict a storm.
C. Storms have a big influence on our life.
D. It is usually, but not always calm before a storm.
