We live in a culture crazy about goals. We're told that success depends on dreaming big and pursuing unceasingly. But what if that mindset is quietly stealing your joy I’m not against goals. I’ve pursued plenty of big ones myself. But I’ve learned that when we treat goals as the only measure of meaning, we risk spending most of our lives doing things we don’t enjoy.
We should welcome goals into our lives — but holding them lightly. It means letting goals guide us, but not define us. It means caring less about whether we reach the finish line, and more about whether we're enjoying the run.
Take my experience writing a book. My big goal was to get traditionally published. That goal sent me in a direction, but the real magic was in the day-to-day writing, refining my proposal, working with an agent, and querying publishers. I genuinely enjoyed all of it. And because I wasn’t attached to the outcome, I could focus on the process. Goals help us aim our purpose like a compass, not a contract. They get us moving. But they don’t have to be the only reason we keep going.
Sometimes the best outcomes aren’t the ones we planned. Back to my book journey: Sure, I wanted to get published. But along the way, something unexpected happened. I met incredible people — fellow writers, podcasters (播客), and editors. One connection led to an invitation to be on a podcast. Another introduced me to a writing group. None of that was on the original goal list. But all of it made my life better. This is the underrated gift of goals — new relationships, new skills, new insights. These happy side effects are often more rewarding than the original achievement.
Should You Set Goals Absolutely. Just don’t make them your identity. Be bold enough to dream, but humble enough to adapt. Be focused enough to move forward, but flexible enough to enjoy the challenges. Because the goal isn't the destination. The goal is the invitation. It invites you to live with intention.
4. What is the problem with our culture’s addiction to goals
A. Goals are irrelevant to personal success.
B. Goals should be pursued without distractions.
C. Only grand goals are worth pursuing.
D. Focusing solely on goals reduces happiness.
5. What does the author mean by “holding goals lightly”
A. Approaching goals with flexibility.
B. Setting achievable goals only.
C. Dismissing goals as unimportant.
D. Prioritizing outcomes over the process.
6. How did the author find his book journey
A. Stressful. B. Demanding. C. Awkward. D. Rewarding.
7. What advice does the author give about setting goals
A. Set goals and stick to them.
B. Dream big but remain adaptable.
C. Face challenges and learn from them.
D. Stay ambitious but be open to change.
C
Rooftops covered with grass, vegetable gardens and dense greenery are now a common sight in many cities around the world. More and more private companies and city authorities are investing in green roofs, drawn to their wide-ranging benefits. Among the benefits are saving on energy costs, reducing the risk of floods, making habitats for urban wildlife, tackling air pollution and even growing food. These increasingly radical urban designs can help cities adapt to the mnonumental problems they face, such as access to resources and a lack of green space due to development.
Ongoing research is showcasing how green roofs in cities can integrate with “living walls”: environmentally friendly walls which are partially or completely covered with greenery, including a growing medium, such as soil or water. Research also indicates that green roofs can be integrated with drainage systems on the ground, such as street trees, so that the water is managed better and the built environment is made more sustainable. There is also evidence to demonstrate the social value of green roofs. Doctors are increasingly prescribing (开处方) time spent gardening outdoors for patients dealing with anxiety and depression.
In North America, green roofs have become mainstream, with a wide array of expansive, accessible and food-producing roofs installed in buildings. Again, city leaders and authorities have helped push the movement forward. Only recently, San Francisco, USA, created a policy requiring new buildings to have green roofs. Toronto, Canada, has policies dating from the 1990s, encouraging the development of urban farms on rooftops.
For green roofs to become the norm (常态)for new developments, there needs to be support from public authorities and private investors. Those responsible for maintaining buildings may have to acquire new skills, such as landscaping, and in some cases, volunteers may be needed to help out.
8. What does the underlined word “monumental” most likely mean in paragraph one
A. Small and insignificant. B. Easy and simple.
C. Massive or important. D. Temporary or short-lived.
9. How do green roofs contribute to mental health issues
A. By reducing the risk of floods. B. By offering gardening for stress relief.
C. By lowering energy costs in homes. D. By improving air quality in cities.
10. Why does the author mention San Francisco and Toronto
A. To illustrate successful policies promoting green roofs.
B. To compare their strategies for urban planning.
C. To criticize their high costs of green roof construction.
D. To show the difficulty of upgrading old buildings.
11. What may be a barrier for green roofs to become the norm
A. Lack of skilled workers for maintenance.
B. High expense of constructing green roofs.
C. Resistance from private investors and authorities.
D. Insufficient public awareness about green roofs.

A new study has found that breathing does more than just move air in and out of your lungs — it could even be used to identify who you are. Scientists at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel discovered that each person has a distinct breathing pattern, known as a nasal (鼻的) breathing “fingerprint”. But rather than being used for things like a criminal investigation or biometric security like actual fingerprints, those of our breath can be used to reveal clues about physical and mental health.
The researchers originally set out to better understand how our sense of smell works. In mammals like humans, the brain processes smell during breathing in. This connection between the brain and breathing led the team to wonder: could our breathing patterns reflect the way our brains are wired — and be unique to each of us
To explore this, the team created a lightweight, wearable device that tracks how air moves through the nose continuously for 24 hours. The device uses soft tubes placed under the nostrils, unlike most standard breathing tests which only last a few minutes and focus mainly on lung health; these short tests miss the subtle breathing patterns that happen during normal daily life, the team said.
In the study, the paper author and neuroscientist professor Noam Sobel and colleagues had 100 healthy young adults wear the device as they went about their normal routines. From the data, the researchers could tell who was who — using only their breathing patterns — and the results remained highly accurate even when repeated over two years.
The study also found connections between breathing patterns and body mass index (BMI),sleep-wake cycles and mental health traits such as anxiety and depression.
The results suggest that tracking nose airflow over time could give insights into a person’s physical and emotional state. Still, there are challenges. The current version of the device is uncomfortable to wear. It also doesn’t track mouth breathing. In the future, the researchers hope to see whether mimicking healthy breathing patterns could help improve people’s mental and emotional health.
12. What. did the researchers initially aim to study
A. How breathing patterns identify a person.
B. How the brain processes smells during breathing.
C The process of how breathing affects the brain.
D. The health benefits of different breathing patterns.
13. How did the researchers test the uniqueness of breathing patterns
A. By analyzing the breath of 100 criminals.
B. By comparing nose and mouth breathing data.
C. By tracking 100 adults over two years.
D. By doing short tests on participants during routines.
14. What can be inferred from the study's findings
A Breathing patterns remain stable over time.
B. Mouth breathing is more important than nose.
C. The device can cure anxiety and depression.
D. Sleep-wake cycles directly affect BMI.
15. Which of the following could be the best title for the passage
A. How the Brain Processes Smells During Inhalation
B. What Your Breathing May Reveal About Your Identity
C. How Breathing Patterns Could Transform Security
D. What Your Breathing May Say About Your Health

I was sure everyone in my junior-high drama class saw the paper inmy hands shaking when I stood up to audition (试镜)for a lead role in the annual Christmas play. I was there, not by choice, but because the teacher wanted each of us to try out for a part. As a “good” student, I did what I was asked, even if it was scary. At school, I was often the target of jokes and had no friends.
Within moments, the fear was gone. I felt like I could escape into this beautiful, imagined world. I was reading the part for the main character, “Star”. She was poor-like me. But unlike me, she had a positive outlook on life even though she was an orphan (孤儿). I wasn’t an orphan, but I felt like one. My dad had disappeared. My mom worked days, went to school at night and spent her weekends doing homework.
I finished reading and rushed back to my seat, wanting to hide and disappear. When the teacher read the cast list and called my name, I wasn’t paying attention. No one ever chose me for anything.
“Patty,” she repeated, “you are e and get your script (剧本).” My heart raced, and I could barely believe it.
One day, right before our drama class started, some of the kids were standing in front of the blackboard, laughing and looking at me. I saw an ugly, cartoon like drawing of a girl with the words “Falling Star” above it. The image hurt. Calmly, the teacher erased the picture.
We started to rehearse (排练)in the auditorium (礼堂). I said my lines, but my heart wasn't in it. My dreams of being liked by my classmates were broken. I was sure that every one of them hated me as much as the person who drew the picture did. At the end of class, the teacher pulled me aside and told me not to pay any attention to the silliness.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】Dear Chris,
How’s everything going I’m more than delighted to share my summer adventures and future plans with you!
This summer, I’ve been keeping occupied. In July, I joined a community volunteer program to help local kids with their English. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see their progress and make new friends. Apart from that, I’ve also been practicing basketball every morning and absorbed in some engaging books in the afternoons. Additionally, I visited my grandparents in the countryside, enjoying nature and experiencing a slower pace of life. As for the new term, I’m determined to improve my time management. I plan to set clear study goals each week and balance academics with extracurriculars.
What about you How’s your summer vacation and do you have any exciting plans for school I can’t wait to hear from you!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】 Everything went smoothly at the dress rehearsal until during a scene, a loud noise and laughter erupted from behind the stage. I ran to the stairs, dashed down the stage into the auditorium, collapsed into a seat and started to cry. “I can’t do it. Get someone else!” Suddenly, I felt gentle hands on my arms. I heard voices and a soft, warm hand took mine. I looked up through my tears to see concerned faces. Four girls, my classmates, had come after me. “Please, don’t drop out,” they said. “You’re really, really good! Don’t pay any attention to that idiot!” One of them handed me a tissue. I wiped my eyes and blew my nose. “Okay,” I said, giving them a shy smile. I went back onstage and finished the scene with no further interruptions.
At last, it was the day for the show. I was excited, even confident. During the show, everything went perfectly, and people even applauded in the middle of the play! I was flying, dancing, filled with the greatest joy you could imagine. Never had I expected that my mom got to see me perform, too. In the weeks that followed, kids at school came up to say, “You were good,” even “impressive.” Although at times I've felt discouraged, and I still do. But it helps to remember that I was once a fallen star who managed to rise and shine, through my own efforts, with the loving guidance of a great teacher and the help of a few unexpected friends.
