Four Famous Festivals in the World
Holi Festival in India
The ancient Hindu festival of Holi is held in late February and early March. This colorful act symbolizes the victory of good over evil (邪恶) each year. It begins with a bonfire (篝火) , the flame of which burns away evil, and after that, the participants are in for some real fun. Crowds of people sprinkle (酒) each other with colored powder and organic paints as a sign of goodness and good luck.
Venice Carnival in Italy
The most romantic city in Italy fills with bright colors and sounds of music every year at the end of February. Residents and guests of Venice dress up in splendid costumes in the style of the Middle Ages and cover their faces with masks. The carnival ends with the awarding of the competitors who have showed the most original and colorful costumes.
Tomorrowland in Belgium
The biggest electronic music festival in the world is held at the end of July in the Belgian city of Boom. The famous three-day event annually gathers more than 300 thousand guests. The main stages are set up in a large park with artificial ponds and beautiful green areas. The area will be equipped in advance with food courts, grills, and all the necessary equipment.
Burning Man in the USA
Many cultural events pale in comparison to the legendary Burning Man, held in Nevada from the last Monday in August to the first Monday in September. The unique atmosphere is created not only by the organizers and the desert where the festival takes place but also by the participants themselves. A British friend told me he couldn’t understand why Chinese people love cracking sunflower seeds (磕瓜子) as a snack so much. “I’ve met a lot of older Chinese and many have a crack (裂缝) in their front teeth; I believe that’s from cracking the seeds,” he said.
I had never noticed the habit, but once he mentioned it, I suddenly became more aware. I realized that whenever I’m watching TV or typing a report, I always start mindlessly cracking sunflower seeds. My friend doesn’t like sunflower seeds, and, to him, it seems unnecessary to work so much just to get one small seed.
When we were young, the whole family would usually get together for Chinese New Year. Then, we all lived close to one another, usually in a small city, and sometimes even neighbors would go door-to-door on Chinese New Year’s Eve to check out what every family was making.
I remember my parents would be in the kitchen cooking. Out in the living room, a large table would already be laid out, complete with fancy tablecloth, ready-made dumpling fillings, and dishes full of candy, fruits and sunflower seeds. Some of the dishes were to be offered to our ancestors later, while others were for neighbors and children to eat before the evening feast. I must have learned how to crack sunflower seeds back then.
I don’t think it’s right to criticize one’s choice in food or eating habits, no matter how strange they may seem.
It’s not only in China. When I went abroad, I found people had all kinds of strange habits when it came to food. In Denmark, they put salted red fish on bread and eat it for dinner, no matter how much it ruins your breath. They think it’s a delicacy (美味佳肴), and it’s connected to their certain culture. I think it’s a wonderful tradition.
4.What did the writer become aware of
A.She had ever typed a report about seeds.
B.She had various snacks while watching TV.
C.She had a habit of cracking sunflower seeds.
D.She damaged her teeth by eating sunflower seeds.
5.What does the writer prove by mentioning Chinese New Year
A.The families get together for it. B.Eating sunflower seeds is related to it.
C.The traditions of celebrating it disappear. D.Children can eat delicious food on that day.
6.The writer’s attitude to Denmark’s way of eating bread is _________.
A.negative B.uncertain C.doubtful D.acceptable
7.What lesson can we learn from the story
A.It is good to form healthy eating habits.
B.Eating habits come from a certain culture.
C.Changing your eating habits will change your life.
D.One kind of food doesn’t necessarily suit everyone.

In the past, westerners were not familiar with Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM), but now it is becoming globally popular. According to a government report, TCM has been introduced into 183 countries and regions around the world.
However, westerners only have a little knowledge of TCM. Their understanding of TCM may be limited to acupuncture(针灸), cupping and massage(按摩). For instance, the purple, injury-like marks left on a U.S. famous swimmer’s back from cupping to relax his muscles and reduce pain became the centre of attention during the Rio Olympics in 2016.
In fact, Chinese herbs(药草) play a more important role in curing diseases and keeping the body in good condition in the TCM treatment system than physical treatment. Therefore, it is disappointing to know that although 103 World Health Organisation member countries have given approval to the practice of acupuncture, not many recognise Chinese herbal medicine. TCM is much less popular than Western medicine partly due to the slow development of Chinese herbs.
Herbs can be made into pills, powder and soup. The kind of herbs used, their quality, quantity and the processing together determine the effectiveness of the prescription(处方). Compared with Western medicine, which has standardised drug production processes and treatment methods, TCM lacks standardisation. The chemical composition and functions of its medicine are still unclear and their effects are unstable. Fortunately, standardisation has improved in recent decades and a number of factories are increasingly producing patented TCM drugs.
Another reason why TCM prescription drugs have developed slowly is that it lacks creativity. While Western medicine-making companies come up with new products every year, TCM drug producers tend to make medicine according to prescriptions handed down from the past. That Chinese chemist Tu Youyou won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her research into malaria(疟疾)treatment may drive creativity to some extent in China’s TCM industry.
However, Rome was not built in a day. The current situation cannot be changed within a short time.
8.What does the example of an American swimmer in Paragraph 2 show
A.Westerners know a little about TCM. B.Cupping is a kind of important TCM treatment.
C.He was injured in his swimming. D.TCM is very popular among westerners.
9.Why don’t some member countries of WHO recognise Chinese herbal medicine
A.Chinese herbs can get rid of diseases. B.They only approve the practice of acupuncture.
C.Western medicine is more effective. D.Medicine made out of Chinese herbs develops slowly.
10.How does the writer feel about the future of TCM
A.Anxious. B.Negative. C.Optimistic. D.Disappointed.
11.What is the best title of the passage
A.The Effectiveness of TCM. B.The Barriers to TCM’s Development.
C.The Weakness of TCM. D.The Future of TCM.

Sugar painting, as the name means, is a painting made of sugar. It’s the sugar for us to taste, and the painting for us to admire.
Since the Warring States Period (战国时代), the ancient people loved sweets and developed methods of producing sugar. In the Tang Dynasty, there was huge progress in the technology of sugar making. And sugar, the precious product once only served to the emperors and princes, also went into common people’s homes. With the cultural and economic development of Song and Yuan Dynasties, people became less interested in only tasting sweetness. In the Ming Dynasty, some people added pictures with good luck into the bowl of sugar, and sugar painting appeared.
Sugar painting is different from normal painting. Sugar painters use syrup (糖浆) as the material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth table as the “paper”. To make syrup, they have to make sugar hot before painting. Since syrup may become hard if it cools, the painters have to produce the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting is done.
However, it’s a pity that this folk art is dying recently. The sugar painting that used to be rich in shapes has become poorer and poorer because of fewer needs. What’s worse, few people seem to be willing to pass on the art except those aging sugar painters.
For most people, painting is a kind of art and difficult to understand. However, sugar painting has pulled the art down into people’s daily lives. Through it, we may see the spiritual support of the ancient people across centuries. Now, sugar painting has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage in China. Therefore, the art should be remembered, missed and passed on.
12.What does the underlined word “precious” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Valuable and expensive. B.Useful and cheap.
C.Special but worthless. D.Simple but priceless.
13.When did sugar painting appear
A.In the Warring States Period. B.In the Tang Dynasty.
C.In the Yuan Dynasty. D.In the Ming Dynasty.
14.What’s the writer’s attitude(态度) towards today’s sugar painting according to Paragraph 4
A.Uncaring. B.Doubtful. C.Worried. D.Unclear.
15.Which can be a suitable title for the passage
A.Exploring the Art of Sugar Painting. B.Improving the Taste of Sugar Painting.
C.Effects of the Sugar Producing Technology. D.Ways to Change the Future of Sugar Painting.

A few weeks ago, when my mom and I were shopping,we ran into my teacher, who mentioned that the school didn’t have a music teacher to help our class put together a performance for Winter Fair. And,right then and there,my mom said,“I know the perfect song and dance.I’ll teach it to the kids!”
Before I could say “Please don’t,”my mom had agreed to come to my class every morning at 9:30 for a week.Oh,and just to be clear,it’s not as if she’s a professional entertainer (演员).My parents run a small grocery store, and the only singing my mom does is in the shower.
“Um,”I said on our way home,“are you sure this is such a good idea ”
“Of course!” she said.“If we want your school’s Winter Fair to happen, people need to step up and volunteer.”
“I know volunteering is important,” I said.“But couldn’t you help out in another way instead ”
She laughed.“Don’t be silly. We’ll have great fun!”
“OK,everyone,”my teacher said at 9:28 on Monday.“We’re going to stop silent reading a little early because a special guest is here to help us with a performance for Winter Fair.”
“Let’s all welcome Arizona’s mother.”
I looked up to discover my mom standing at the front of the room wearing the world’s silliest hat.
“I’m super excited to be here with you!”my mom said.“I’m going to teach you a fun little song and dance number I learned a few years back, when I did some theater in college. Here goes!”
Oh,please,oh,please,I said over and over in my head, let there be a fire drill (演习) or a power outage (停电),or anything to stop my mom for completely embarrassing herself—and me!
But obviously,my mom was not at all concerned about looking silly. She turned on some background music and started singing and dancing away.
