Word formation
构词法
构词法是按照一定的语言规律创造新词的方法。从词的形态结构来看,英语单词的构成方式主要有派生法、合成法、转化法和缩略法四种。
一、派生法(Derivation)
含义:派生法就是在一个词根的前面或后面加上一个前缀或后缀,从而构成一个新词,称为派生词。
特点:新词与词根的含义有着紧密的联系。
前缀
除少数前缀外,前缀一般改变单词的意义,不改变词性
否定前缀

二、合成法(Compounding)
含义:合成就是把两个或两个以上各自独立的单词合到一起组成一个新的单词,称为合成词。
特点:合成词的含义与原独立的单词含义相关。

三、转化法(Conversion)
含义:词形不变的情况下,词性转变。
特点:转化后的含义与原词含义相关。如:water(n.水)与water(v. 浇水),lift(v. 举起)与lift(n.电梯)等。
1.动词转化为名词。如:
He is a man of strong build.
他是一个体格健壮的男人。
2.名词转化为动词。如:
Did you book a seat on the plane
你订好飞机座位了吗
3.形容词转化为动词。如:
We will try our best to better our living conditions.
我们要尽最大的努力改善我们的生活状况。
4.形容词转化为名词
①表示颜色的形容词常可转化为名词。如:
You should be dressed in black at the funeral.
你在葬礼上应该穿黑色衣服。
②某些形容词如old, young, poor, rich, wounded, injured等与the连用,表示一类人,作主语时,谓语用复数。如:
The old in our village are living a happy life.
我们村的老年人过着幸福的生活。
四、缩略法(Abbreviation)
含义:缩略法是把词的音节加以省略或简化构成缩略词。
特点:缩略法主要采取“截头”、“去尾”或者“既截头又去尾”的方法生成新词。
1.截短词:截短原词的某一音节。如:lab←laboratory(实验室),ad←advertisement(广告)。
2.首字母缩略词:取词组中每个词的第一个字母代表这个词组构成新词。如:UN←United Nations(联合国),USA←United States of America(美国)。
3.首字母拼音词:把首字母组成的缩略词拼读成一个词。如:SOHO,SoHo←small office, home office(家庭办公室)。
4.拼缀词:组成复合词的各词中,一个词失去部分或各个词都失去部分音节后所合成的一个新词。如:brunch←breakfast+lunch(早午餐),motel← motor+hotel(汽车旅馆), sci-fi←science + fiction(科幻小说)。

(实验室),ad←advertisement(广告)。
2.首字母缩略词:取词组中每个词的第一个字母代表这个词组构成新

3.首字母拼音词:把首字母组成的缩略词拼读成一个词。

4.拼缀词:组成复合词的各词中,一个词失去部分或各个词都失去部分
