A
To develop one’s taste in English, the most effective way is to read a wide variety of English books. Yet one may be at a loss to choose the right books, especially as a beginner. As a native Spanish, I would like to share some of my experience.
My first English novel was Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, recommended by many English teachers and professors as an ideal book for English learners. But my experience was somewhat disastrous. I had great difficulty in understanding the novel, let alone enjoying it. It’s not the vocabulary that troubled me, but rather the way Austen makes sentences, and her way of thinking, which seemed too hard for me at that time. My enthusiasm was much recovered after reading Hemingway’s novel A Farewell to Arms. No long and complicated sentences. And I particularly liked his brief and straightforward (简单的) style. So my first suggestion is: as a beginner, you’d better choose contemporary novels instead of classical ones.
However, if you limit yourself to novels, you will miss a lot of treasures. English essays can at once inform you, entertain you, and improve your taste in English. The best example is Bertrand Russell’s work. His simple language enables his philosophy within the reach of ordinary people. Here comes my second suggestion—essays are necessary.
Never follow others’ suggestions and opinions blindly, however famous or influential the person might be. We should be open to various ideas, but always think and determine by ourselves. As the saying goes:one man’s meat is another man’s poison. With that in mind, we are bound to find out our favourite writers through reading and develop our fine taste in English.

B [2025·江苏扬州高一期中]
Most human language tends to take a happy view on life, a new study suggests. A team of scientists used big data techniques to examine a massive amount of data on 10 languages, from Korean Twitter feeds (信息) to Russian literature. They found that the most commonly used words in each language all leaned towards the positive. The research was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
In 1969, psychologists at the University of Illinois came up with the idea, called the Pollyanna Hypothesis (假说), that humans have a universal tendency to use positive words more often than negative ones. But those findings were based on small studies.
Christopher Danforth, co-author of the study, and his team took a more data-driven approach. The researchers analysed billions of words from English, Spanish, French, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, Chinese (Simplified), Russian, Indonesian and Arabic. The words came from two dozen types of sources, such as books, news outlets, social media, websites, television and movie subtitles, and music lyrics.
The researchers identified about 10,000 of the most commonly used words for each language, and asked native speakers to rate the happiness of these words on a scale (范围) from 1 to 9, where 9 was a smiling face, 1 was a crying face, and 5 was neutral. For example, English speakers rated the word “laughter” at 8.50 and the word “terrorist” at 1.30.
On average, the ratings showed that a Google search of Spanish websites had the highest score for word happiness, followed by Portuguese Google searches, Portuguese Tweets, and English Google Books. Chinese Google Books had the least happy words, followed by Korean movie subtitles and English music lyrics. But across all languages and types of text, the median word happiness score was higher than 5 on the scale of 1 to 9. In other words, humans use more happy words than sad ones, the researchers said.
( )5.What would the psychologists in the article probably agree with
A.People all over the world tend to use negative words.
B.All human language holds a bright view on life.
C.People have a tendency to communicate in a selfish way.
D.People around the world prefer happy words to sad ones.
( )6.In what way is Danforth’s study an improvement over previous studies
A.The number of data.
B.The quality of data.
C.The object of the study.
D.The research environment.
( )7.How did Danforth and his team conduct their research
A.By classifying languages by topic.
B.By interviewing native speakers.
C.By rating the happiness of the words.
D.By identifying the most happy words.
( )8.What is the text mainly about
A.The effect of positive languages.
B.A feature of human language.
C.Different ideas on human language.
D.The development of human language.(共66张PPT)

To develop one's taste in English, the most effective way is
to read a wide variety of English books. Yet one may be at a
loss to choose the right books, especially as a beginner. As a
native Spanish, I would like to share some of my experience.
My first English novel was Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice,
recommended by many English teachers and professors as an

ideal book for English learners. But my experience was
somewhat disastrous. I had great difficulty in understanding the
novel, let alone enjoying it. It's not the vocabulary that troubled
me, but rather the way Austen makes sentences, and her way
of thinking, which seemed too hard for me at that time. My
enthusiasm was much recovered after reading Hemingway's
novel A Farewell to Arms. No long and complicated sentences.
And I particularly liked his brief and straightforward (简单的)
style. So my first suggestion is: as a beginner, you'd better
choose contemporary novels instead of classical ones.

However, if you limit yourself to novels, you will miss a lot
of treasures. English essays can at once inform you, entertain
you, and improve your taste in English. The best example is
Bertrand Russell's work. His simple language enables his
philosophy within the reach of ordinary people. Here comes my
second suggestion—essays are necessary.
Never follow others' suggestions and opinions blindly,
however famous or influential the person might be. We should
be open to various ideas, but always think and determine by

English.

B[2025·江苏扬州高一期中]
Most human language tends to take a happy view on life,
a new study suggests. A team of scientists used big data
techniques to examine a massive amount of data on 10
languages, from Korean Twitter feeds (信息) to Russian literature.
They found that the most commonly used words in each
language all leaned towards the positive. The research was
published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy
of Sciences.

In 1969, psychologists at the University of Illinois came up
with the idea, called the Pollyanna Hypothesis (假说), that
humans have a universal tendency to use positive words more
often than negative ones. But those findings were based on
small studies.
Christopher Danforth, co-author of the study, and his team
took a more data-driven approach. The researchers analysed
billions of words from English, Spanish, French, German, Brazilian
Portuguese, Korean, Chinese (Simplified), Russian, Indonesian and

Arabic. The words came from two dozen types of sources, such
as books, news outlets, social media, websites, television and
movie subtitles, and music lyrics.
The researchers identified about 10,000 of the most
commonly used words for each language, and asked native
speakers to rate the happiness of these words on a scale (范围)
from 1 to 9, where 9 was a smiling face, 1 was a crying face,
and 5 was neutral. For example, English speakers rated the word
“laughter” at 8.50 and the word “terrorist” at 1.30.

On average, the ratings showed that a Google search of
Spanish websites had the highest score for word happiness,
followed by Portuguese Google searches, Portuguese Tweets,
and English Google Books. Chinese Google Books had the least
happy words, followed by Korean movie subtitles and English
music lyrics. But across all languages and types of text, the
median word happiness score was higher than 5 on the scale of
1 to 9. In other words, humans use more happy words than
sad ones, the researchers said.
