Today a man talked very loud on his phone on a train between Malvern and Reading, making many passengers upset (烦). I wonder how he would react (回应) if I were to read my newspaper out loud on the train, I have never had the courage to do it, though.
Pak50 … 57 minutes ago
Why not give it a try Perhaps you should take lessons on a musical instrument. The late musician Dennis Brian is said to have asked a fellow train passenger to turn off his radio. After the passenger said no, he took out his French horn (号) and started to practice.
Angie O’Edema … 42 minutes ago
I don’t see how musical instruments can help improve manners in public. Don’t do to others what you wouldn’t like to be done to yourself. Once, a passenger next to me talked out loud on his mobile phone. I left my seat quietly, giving him some privacy to finish his conversation. He realized this and apologised (道歉) to me. When his phone rang again later, he left his seat to answer it. You see, a bit of respect and cooperation can do the job better.
Taodas … 29 minutes ago
I did read my newspaper out loud on a train, and it turned out well. The guy took it in good part, and we chatted happily all the way to Edinburgh.
Sophie 76 … 13 minutes ago
I have not tried reading my newspaper out loud on a train, but, several years ago, I read some chapters from Harry Porter to my bored and noisy children. Several passengers seemed to appreciate what I did.

As summer ends, new students are starting high school. We talk to some of them, and they share their thoughts as they leave their old schools behind and start a new life.
Eva Lumber is leaving for Ashton Park School, and she says, “Most of my friends are going to another school, but I chose Ashton Park because of its sports. I do a lot of sports. I’m looking forward to having lots of different lessons in different classrooms, but a bit apprehensive about getting lost in the first few days, because the school is really big.”
Jaison Paul is going to Chorlton High School. “Most of my friends are going to different schools. I feel quite shy about talking in front of a lot more students and people I don’t know. But even though I feel nervous, I’m looking forward to meeting new people and making new friends and to having more lessons, especially in science, because there are more resources (资源) there,” he says.
We also talk to some older students, who offer freshmen their advice. Tyrell Cobo-Brown and Marni Barlow-Marshall are two of them.
Tyrell suggests, “Always be yourself. You will make friends, even if you don’t run into many people from your old school. I only had a few friends at first, but now I have lots. Also, always finish your work before the deadline (截止日期), or you might not finish it at all, as I know from experience. And remember to keep your study notes because they’ll help you understand what you learn.”
Marni says, “Try your hardest. There will be people cleverer than you, so just try not to compare yourself to others. Don’t be afraid to make new friends; put yourself out there. You don’t always have to stay friends with your old ones; sometimes it’s good to let go of the past.”

A. Confident. B. Worried. C. Surprised. D. Angry.

A. Always have a study plan of your own.
B. Be your best self and learn from experience.
C. Complete your work on time and keep notes.
D. Make sure you understand everything in class
7. What idea about friendships would Marni support
A. Just have a few close friends. B. Move on from old friendships.

Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine.
The study used information collected from more than 28,000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time after school, including how much time they spent watching TV or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programmes. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (等级).
Researchers said in the study some of the results were expected. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
12. Which of the following came last when students took part in the new study
A. Talking about their lifestyles. B. Introducing their after-school activities.
C. Reporting their mental states on a scale. D. Answering questions about screen time use.
13. What do the researchers find about teenage girls
A. They often have higher levels of satisfaction.
B. Few of them take part in after-school activities.
C. Anxiety has become a serious problem among them.
D. Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.
14. What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4
A. Earlier findings about screen time are wrong.
B. High screen time is common among teenagers.
C. No after-school activities mean no screen time.
D. Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do.
15. Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study
A. They are good for teenagers’ physical health.
B. They help to improve teenagers’ mental health.
C. They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D. They allow teenagers to become better learners.

Alex sat quietly at the back of his Chinese class, his eyes fixed on the textbook before him. As a shy and unnoticed student, he felt lonely, struggling against the challenges of high school life. Ms Lau, his Chinese teacher, was a light in his dark world. Her warm smile and gentle behavior made her stand out among the sea of teachers. She was the only one who seemed to understand him, always encouraging him to step out of his comfort zone.
One day, after class, Ms Lau asked Alex to her office with excitement shining in her eyes. “Alex, I have an offer for you,” she said, her voice filled with joy. “I am organizing a cultural exchange program to China, and I believe it would be a great opportunity for you to explore a new world.”
Alex’s heart raced wildly, the thought of traveling to a foreign country both exciting and frightening. He felt worried, unsure if it was a good idea to start such an adventure. But Ms Lau’s smile gave him the push he needed to make the decision.
With Ms Lau’s help, Alex began preparing for the trip. He got really interested in Chinese culture and learned about its long history and traditions. After Ms Lau became his Chinese teacher, he learned not only the language but also invaluable life lessons from her. She taught him the importance of being confident and not giving up, reminding him that growth only happens outside one’s comfort zone.
The day of the program arrived, and Alex found himself on a plane headed for China. He couldn’t help but feel shocked as he stepped off the plane and into a world so different from his own.
