W: I’d like to, but I have to prepare for the coming finals at home.
Text 2
W: Shall we have some tea or coffee
M: I think a glass of cold water would be better. There is nothing like it when the weather is so hot.
Text 3
M: Lisa, I heard you need an English-French dictionary. Shall we go to the bookstore this afternoon
W: Sorry, Mark, but my cousin has told me she’d give me her used one. So I’m going to meet her in a cafe to get it.
Text 4
M: Let’s go to play rugby.
W: I think it’s still raining now.
M: No, it has stopped. But we won’t be able to see sunshine in a short period.
Text 5
M: How much are the toys
W: We are having a sale today. The original price is 10 dollars each, but now it only costs half the price.
M: All right, I’ll take three.
Text 6
M: Would you like to go out for dinner tonight
W: I’d love to. What time
M: Would 7:30 be OK Or 7:00 if you want to go earlier.
W: No, 7:30 is fine. I finish work at 5:00.
M: Shall I pick you up from your house
W: It’s hard to find a parking space near where I live. Could I meet you at the restaurant
M: Yes, that’s fine. Well, there’s an Italian place in town, or would you prefer Indian or Thai
W: Italian sounds fine.
Text 7
M: Are you doing work this late at night again It’s almost 2:00 am. Your eyes need some rest, dear.
W: No, I was reading a book online, but now I’m just checking out the news. Did you hear that Amanda was found in the forest
M: Who is Amanda
W: She’s a young woman who lives in Hawaii. She went hiking through a forest four days ago and never came back home. Hundreds of people had been searching for her.
M: Maybe she ran away.
W: No, that wasn’t the reason.
M: Maybe she got lost.
W: Not likely, since she knew the paths well.
M: So, have they found her
W: Yes, they just found her today. She had fallen by a waterfall. Her leg was broken, so she couldn’t climb back up to get help.
Text 8
M: Thanks for being our guest today on 94.1 FM.
W: You’re welcome. Thank you for having me on your show.
M: It’s our pleasure. So, Ms Allen, tell us a little bit about your programme.
W: Sure. I started this volunteer programme three years ago. I was working at a centre for the elderly. I noticed that a lot of them seemed to be very lonely.
M: Yes. That’s a big problem in many cities.
W: At the time, my husband was a teacher. He recognized that many students were having trouble at school. They needed help with their homework, but their parents were working and didn’t have time to help them.
M: So, you decided to create a programme that would connect old people with students in need of tutoring.
W: Yes. I knew there was a need for such a programme. Last year, we had 200 volunteer tutors. Together, they did more than 12,000 hours of tutoring.
Text 9
M: Have you ever been to this concert hall before
W: No, this is my first time.
M: The sound is amazing. They designed it, so you have a great audio experience no matter where you sit.
W: Usually I only see live music at clubs.
M: I used to go to big concerts at the sports centre, but it’s just too big, and the sound doesn’t travel well.
W: I agree. I think people go to them mainly for the comfortable environment.
M: True. It can be electric, but it would take a lot of effort to get to.
W: How did you get these tickets anyway I thought they had been sold out.
M: They had, but my sister is in the orchestra. She plays the violin.
W: Well, tell her thanks for me. Do you play any instruments
M: No. I tried to learn guitar, but I’m not gifted like my sister. How about you
W: I play the piano.
Text 10
W: This week we’re going to talk about Castle Howard, in Sussex. Castle Howard was badly burnt in a fire two years ago. A lot of paintings and furniture got damaged and it has taken a lot of hard work and patience to restore it back to its previous condition. It will be open to the public for the first time in two years on Sunday the 2nd of April. The opening times are from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm. As of May the 1st Castle Howard will be open daily from 10:00 am to sunset. You’ll be able to visit it all through the summer until the 1st of October, when it will be closed again. It’s well worth a visit. You’ll need a whole day just to wander around its splendid rooms. Of particular interest is the Dining Room in the West Wing with its fascinating collection of china, dating back to the 17th century, when the Howards first came to live in this building. You should also take advantage of its wonderful grounds. You can even have your lunch in the open-air restaurant behind the castle. Castle Howard’s a great day out for all the family with its convenient prices too! For a family of four, the children get in free of charge.
That’s all for today, listeners. But don’t miss next week’s programme.

C
根据画线单词上文“Coral reefs are massively decreasing globally, and some scientists say we could lose 70%—90% of our reefs due to warming ocean waters.”
根据文章第三段“‘Even if you start on a small scale (规模)…a square kilometre already, it could have a great impact,’ Martel says. ‘It could really protect a coast, a beach, or an area where there is a community living and they need protection because the sea is rising.’”

根据第二段“The ‘Capacitivo’ works by inserting an electrode grid (电极网格) into the fabric (织物) that can identify the shape and composition of a given object. The fabric system recognizes objects based on shifts in the electrical charge of its electrodes caused by changes in an object’s electrical field.”
根据文章第三段“The tablecloth can determine what object is on the fabric. For instance, it would be able to identify if you have placed a potato on a table. It could then pass that information to a connected app, which would analyse its database to show recipes that use this ingredient.”
根据倒数第二段“‘This is a very impressive development,’ said Monica Craciun, a professor in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at the University of Exeter. ‘Other fabrics already available need input which is carried out by the user performing an action, such as touching the fabric.’”
根据最后一段“However, the technology still needs improving. It can’t recognize metallic objects, performs poorly on objects with square edges, such as books, and has trouble identifying the difference between different types of liquid. Microsoft said it could be five to ten years before the tablecloth is available for the market.” 故选A项。

第二节
One possible version:
Days before our Christmas vacation, the gifts began to pour in. Students with bright eyes would eagerly tell me how they found the “perfect gift”. One student bought a complete art set, knowing Jace loved to draw. Another found toy aliens, remembering a paper Jace had written about aliens. I was amazed by their thoughtfulness and knew I couldn’t let them or Jace down. I found my information sheet and called the number listed. There was no response despite my continuous efforts. On Christmas Eve, I decided to try one last time. Amazingly, Jace answered the phone! The next thing was to drive to his home.
As I drove down his road, I saw a light flashing, and it signalled which home was his. It took several trips back and forth to my car to get the gifts inside. Eyes fixed on the piles of carefully wrapped gifts, joy mingling with gratitude was written on his face. Unforgettable was Jace’s joyful smile that lit up the sky like a string of twinkling lights. Thinking about my thoughtful students and how excited I was to tell them about finding Jace, I had a smile of my own, and I was thankful to be a part of one of the most important “lessons” of their lives.

There are thousands of science books on a huge variety of topics. Which ones should you choose Luckily for you, we have made a list of the best science books that you should not miss.
A Short History of Nearly Everything
Written by Bill Bryson, it is a popular science book that explains some areas of science. It was published on February 4,2003, and was one of the best-selling popular science books of 2005 in the UK.It explains a variety of scientific topics in a vivid and comprehensive way, which makes it accessible to people with no science knowledge. But it’s quite long.
Thing Explainer: Complicated Stuff in Simple Words
It is a 2015 non-fiction book created by Randall Munroe, in which the author explains various complex subjects using common English words. It covers a wide range of topics and explains complex ideas using illustrations, so it’s entertaining and easily understood. However, the words and phrases used to describe the subjects are too technical to understand.
Ask an Astronaut: My Guide to Life in Space
Published on October 19,2017, the book is Tim Peake’s personal guide to life in space, based on his own experience. The Q & A format makes it easy to quickly find answers and images are used to illustrate some of the more complex ideas, making it suitable for both children and adults. The disadvantage is that the Q & A format can become boring sometimes.
Brief Answers to the Big Questions
Written by Stephen Hawking, the 2018 book examines some of the universe’s greatest mysteries and promotes the view that science is very important in helping solve problems. It provides a great introduction to Stephen Hawking’s thoughts.Since complex ideas are communicated in a simple and understandable language, your previous physics knowledge is not required. For more advanced readers, it’s too basic.

Last summer at a bookstore, my son Henry was fascinated by the cover of the first novel from Peter Brown’s middle-grade trilogy (三部曲). He then finished it in just two days. “Dad, why did The Wild Robot have to be so sad ” he tearfully asked me.
The story is set on a remote island, where a robot named Roz learns to survive and communicate with the island’s creatures, and becomes part of the community. For my son, it was the first book he discovered on his own, the first to impact him with the mix of tragedy (悲剧) and joy.
When I finished the book, I knew why Henry loved it. In our book club discussion, he described how Brown’s pictures and words had made the story feel real. When talking about its final scenes, where Roz leaves to find repairs for her injured body, Henry cried again. His previous reading experiences had cheerful, “happily-ever-after” endings, but this book introduced him to the beauty of complex emotions. I tried to explain how sadness can enhance the meaning of happy moments, but failed to fully convince him.
Once our discussion ended, Henry requested me to buy The Wild Robot Escapes and instantly fell in love with it. He read the first two books repeatedly, so you can imagine his excitement when we finally got a copy of The Wild Robot Protects.
We both agree it is worth the wait. Roz leaves the island again to stop an underwater threat: “the poison tide”. Brown expertly balances between breathtaking adventures and unsettling ideas—not just happiness and sadness, but also, given the climate-change undercurrents, hope and despair.
And, here’s something special about Roz: her physical clumsiness and confusion about life, conveyed through her expressive eyes and downturned mouth. Her story reflects the challenges of surviving in a strange place, much like a child’s journey. Readers love Roz. They learn from her. Even better, they learn alongside her. Roz gave Henry the power to push through the first book’s sad parts, getting him ready to appreciate that, sometimes, sadness isn’t a bad thing to feel.

A Spanish project is attempting to 3D print coral reefs (珊瑚礁) to provide habitat for fish and protection for beaches and coastal communities at risk from rising seas and other damage.
Coral reefs are massively decreasing globally, and some scientists say we could lose 70%—90% of our reefs due to warming ocean waters. That has all kinds of serious consequences because a quarter of the world’s fish live in and around reefs. Reefs are critically important protectors of beach communities threatened by high waves and tides, and they support a massive amount of biodiversity. That led marine biologist Lizzie Fane and her co-founder Alfred Martel, a computer scientist, to start Coastruction, a non-profit organization.
“Even if you start on a small scale (规模)…a square kilometre already, it could have a great impact,” Martel says. “It could really protect a coast, a beach, or an area where there is a community living and they need protection because the sea is rising.”
Being able to 3D print is important, because you match individual sites. Every location is different with different coral species. “It’s like everybody has a different house,” Fane says. “You can take into account habitat requirements of not just the coral but also the fish that live nearby.”
Their current technology can print various shapes. The result can be an amazingly natural-looking man-made rock with plenty of corners for both coral and other fish to attach themselves and make homes.
The Coastruction founders don’t think they can possibly meet the global demand, so their goal is to provide the tools—like the 3D printer—for local people and design the technology to use cheap and locally-available materials to create the artificial coral reefs. No high temperatures or chemical additives are required, and any loose powder or sand material not used in one print will be used in the next. The 3D printer works on site, so there’s no transport of finished blocks required.
( )28.What does the underlined word “That” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A.The biodiversity of coral reefs.
B.The reduction in coral species.
C.The protection coral reefs provide.
D.The loss of global coral reefs.
( )29.What do Martel’s words imply
A.3D-printed reefs can hardly save oceans.
B.Small actions can make a lot of difference.
C.Small-scale production of reefs is a drop in the ocean.
D.3D-printed reefs fail to provide perfect fish habitat.
( )30.What do we know about the current 3D reef printing
A.It can just print regular-shaped reefs.
B.It can use any material to produce reefs.
C.It can create lifelike reefs.
D.It can meet the global demand for reefs.
( )31.What is one goal of the Coastruction founders
A.Adapting their technology to local conditions.
B.Putting their reefs into mass production.
C.Transporting finished reefs to where they are needed.
D.Adding chemicals to reefs to make them colourful.

From app-connected salt shakers to voice-controlled microwaves, it seems no part of the kitchen has avoided being given a high-tech makeover (改善). Now, as part of a Microsoft-funded project, researchers in the US and China have developed a smart tablecloth.
The “Capacitivo” works by inserting an electrode grid (电极网格) into the fabric (织物) that can identify the shape and composition of a given object. The fabric system recognizes objects based on shifts in the electrical charge of its electrodes caused by changes in an object’s electrical field. The difference in charge can relate to the type of material, size of the object and shape of the contact area. “It uses the basic principle of a touch screen that detects your finger,” explained Microsoft researcher Teddy Seyed.
The tablecloth can determine what object is on the fabric. For instance, it would be able to identify if you have placed a potato on a table. It could then pass that information to a connected app, which would analyse its database to show recipes that use this ingredient.
Microsoft said the fabric, created with the help of Dartmouth College and Wuhan University, could also sense if an object, such as a set of keys, has been misplaced on a table. “Besides, our system can sense the change of what is inside a container,” Teddy added. For example, a tablecloth can detect whether the soil of a table plant is wet or dry, enabling the system to remind the user to water the plant.
“This is a very impressive development,” said Monica Craciun, a professor in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at the University of Exeter. “Other fabrics already available need input which is carried out by the user performing an action, such as touching the fabric.”
However, the technology still needs improving. It can’t recognize metallic objects, performs poorly on objects with square edges, such as books, and has trouble identifying the difference between different types of liquid. Microsoft said it could be five to ten years before the tablecloth is available for the market.
( )32.What makes the invention of the smart tablecloth possible
A.Composition varies from object to object.
B.Fingerprint scanning techniques develop fast.
C.Electrodes can pass information to each other.
D.Different objects cause different changes in the electrical charge.
( )33.What can the “Capacitivo” do
A.Connect to other smart products in the kitchen.
B.Suggest meals based on the ingredients on it.
C.Distinguish between different types of liquid.
D.Detect nutrients in the soil of a table plant.
( )34.What advantage does the “Capacitivo” have over other fabrics
A.It can recognize a wider range of objects.
B.It can identify objects more accurately.
C.It doesn’t require actions from users.
D.It won’t be damaged after washing.
( )35.What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.The limitations of the smart tablecloth.
B.The classification of the smart tablecloth.
C.The characteristics of the smart tablecloth.
D.The trend of marketing the smart tablecloth.

As the world struggles to deal with the climate crisis, some companies are working to remove polluting carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air. 36. But two US companies have recently made important progress.
Scientists say large amounts of CO2 must be removed from the atmosphere and stored. 37. But there’s so much CO2 in the atmosphere that just planting trees and protecting forests won’t solve the problem. And when plants and trees die, the carbon dioxide they’ve stored gets released again.
That means humans need to come up with ways of removing carbon dioxide from the air and storing it. This is called Direct Air Capture (DAC). The science of removing carbon dioxide from the air is challenging, and it’s still pretty new. 38. So one puzzle for these companies is how to remove carbon dioxide without creating more pollution.
A company called Heirloom has just opened the first DAC plant in the United States. The company heats up the limestone to separate out the CO2, which is concrete. The process is extremely expensive. 39. That’s a tiny amount compared to how much carbon dioxide needs to be removed from the atmosphere, but the company says it hopes to remove a billion tons per year by 2035.
40. Some people worry that it will take too long for DAC technology to become powerful enough to make a difference. Others worry that focusing on removing carbon dioxide could take attention away from more important climate actions, like switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy. But experts say the decision isn’t to do one or the other. The world needs to end fossil fuel use and pull carbon dioxide out of the air.
A.Plants and trees do this naturally.
B.That’s a huge and challenging goal.
C.Not everyone is excited about carbon dioxide removal.
D.Graphyte is another US company working on DAC.
E.The new plant can remove 1,000 tons of CO2 a year.
F.Most DAC processes require a large amount of energy.
G.As a matter of fact, CO2 is just a small part of the gases that make up air.

Gifts for Jace
I’ll never forget the day one of my students shyly raised his hand and said that he had never received a gift. My shocked fifth-graders were discussing a reading story about a boy who was not going to be getting anything for his birthday because money was tight that year. Even though this class was very open during reading discussions, Jace’s honesty surprised even me. What was even more eye-opening was the fact that this sweet, fifth-grade boy had gone ten years and never experienced the joy and surprise of receiving a present.
I searched my mind for a reason why he might be saying this. Did he want attention from his peers No, that was definitely not his style. Was he exaggerating Again, he was not the type. Then I remembered his story. His mother was out of the picture and he lived alone with his dad. His father had a hard time holding down a job, and coming to think of it, I didn’t see his father at registration or parent-teacher conferences. Even though on the outside Jace was a bit untidy, he always came to school with a smile and sincere enthusiasm for learning.
A couple of weeks after Jace’s comment, he was absent from school due to the fact that he had moved away. This happened to be the day I was sending home the annual note about the classroom Christmas gift exchange. Traditionally, each boy was to bring a gift for a boy in the three-dollar range and the same was true for each girl.
As we were discussing the specifics, a girl raised her hand and sincerely suggested that we do away with our traditional policy, and that each buy a gift for Jace instead. The enthusiasm grew as the students discussed the kinds of things they knew Jace would like. We took a quick vote and consistently agreed to go ahead with this wonderful idea.
Paragraph 1:
Days before our Christmas vacation, the gifts began to pour in.

Paragraph 2:
As I drove down his road, I saw a light flashing and it signalled which home was his.
