Text 1
M: Susan, I want to book a table at The Duce for tonight. Do you know its number
W: Yes. You can call 602-866-3823 to book a table.
M: Got it. Thank you.
Text 2
W: Your blood pressure is up. How are you feeling Any better
M: Yeah, my wounds don’t hurt that much but I still have a fever.
Text 3
M: Please shut the windows. It’s getting hot in here. I’ll turn the air on, instead.
W: I hate keeping the windows closed, but I think you’re right. It must be 100 degrees outside today.
Text 4
M: Those are nice dogs. What are their names
W: This one is Paddy and the other is Smudge. They have a sister called Chloe, but she’s at home today.
M: It must cost you a lot for dog food.
Text 5
W: We had a great meal at the new place on High Street. The one across the road does good food as well.
M: Have you tried the Indian restaurant in the town centre I’ve heard good reports about it.
Text 6
M: Good morning. How can I help you
W: Hello, I need to get this dress cleaned. I spilled pasta sauce on it last night. It’s silk, so I can’t wash it at home. Is it ruined
M: Oh, no, I can get that out for you. It will be ready tomorrow morning.
W: I’m going to a work event tonight and I need to wear it. Can you have it ready by this afternoon
M: Sure, I can do that for you. Why not come back around 4: 00 pm
W: That’s perfect. Thank you so much.
Text 7
W: Have you seen my garden yet It’s my first time growing one and, so far, it’s going really well. I didn’t have any time before, but I decided it was time to develop a new hobby.
M: That sounds interesting. What are you growing
W: Mostly fruits and some grains because I don’t like eating most vegetables. I know vegetables and grains are healthier than fruits but they definitely don’t taste as good.
M: That’s true! So, what are you doing right now
W: I’m just watering the strawberry plants and the orange tree. I also wanted to grow a pear tree, but the dry climate here is not right for it.
M: That sounds really cool.
W: Maybe you can have a try in your garden as well.
M: I’ll consider it.
Text 8
W: So, where are we going to have the party, Andrew Your home
M: It’s an outdoor party. Sandy’s Restaurant near our school has an outdoor space big enough for a barbecue party.
W: If we hold it in a restaurant, then we have to buy food from the restaurant. That would be expensive. We don’t plan to spend much money, you know that.
M: What about your home, Jane
W: Well, I need to ask my parents first. I just had a birthday party last week, so I hope my parents will permit it this time.
M: Thanks, Jane. We will do the clean-up after the party. When shall we have the party, then
W: I think Saturday evening is perfect. It’s usually from 6 pm to 9 pm.
M: OK. Then we can settle everything else for the party, including the food to bring, the music and the games.
W: I’ve made a list with more than a hundred songs. Enough for 5 hours of music.
M: I’ll send the invitations to our friends this afternoon, and I hope our friends will reply soon.
Text 9
M: Receiving a good education means that you will have more options when you try to find a job.
W: Did you go to university, sir
M: I have been to three different universities. That is how much I love learning.
W: So are you a teacher
M: Not in the same way as your other teachers. I go around schools giving students talks about university life, to prepare them and help them if they are looking to apply. Do you want to go to university
W: I do, but I don’t know what I want to study.
M: What subjects are you strong on
W: I get good grades in maths and physics, but I want to be a writer.
M: Then you should study writing and maybe languages, too.
W: Even though I want to go, I am not sure whether my family can afford to send me.
M: That’s another reason I visit schools. The universities I work for offer help and support when it comes to funding education.
W: I’m so glad to hear that. Now please tell me more about it.
Text 10
W: Good evening, and welcome to the Channel 5 weather report. This weekend we expect to see stormy weather throughout the north-east region. Along the coast, there will be strong winds and heavy rain starting Friday. For those living further inland, away from the ocean, it will be less windy, but it will still be a very wet weekend. If you live in or near the mountains, stay warm and get ready for the heavy snow! Icy roads and snow will make it dangerous to go out or travel on Saturday, so it’ll be best to do indoor activities at home. Local officials are warning of possible power cuts throughout the entire region. We at Channel 5 encourage everyone to keep a flashlight and spare batteries at home in case there’s no electricity. We also want to remind you to keep your mobile phones and battery packs fully charged. Fortunately, this storm system should pass quickly, and you can look forward to sunny skies starting Tuesday.

根据第二段“She knows first-hand the importance of art to maintain native traditions. In 2015 she turned that knowledge into her own brand: B. Yellowtail.” 故选A。
根据第三段“The extra money has, of course, increased artists’ income in the past year, but the relationship is interdependent: without the work of those artists, B. Yellowtail wouldn’t exist and native culture would feel the loss.”
根据第四段“Little Coyote picked up her entrepreneurial spirit from her parents, who owned a gift shop. ‘My parents said, “If you have hands, create something. Do something, and make a living off of that,”’ she said. After her parents passed away, the artist began learning beading (串珠) earrings herself. Dentalium, a tusk shell often used in native jewellery, caught her eye in particular. ‘I love it, because back in the day, our Cheyenne women wore a lot of dentalium,’ she said. ‘So I wanted to give a contemporary look to that—to what our ancestors wore.’”
根据第二段“In 2015 she turned that knowledge into her own brand: B. Yellowtail.”可知,她创立了自己的品牌,说明她是一个有创意的人;根据第二段“A year later, she created the B. Yellowtail Collective, made up of native artists, to foster economic opportunities for their communities. Many of those artists are women from different tribes, but all of them preserve their culture and move it forward through their medium of choice.”可知,她聘用当地艺术家来延续本土文化,说明她是一个有决心的人;根据第三段“…without the work of those artists, B. Yellowtail wouldn’t exist and native culture would feel the loss.”
根据第一段中“When Belquer first joined a team to make a better live music experience for the deaf and the hard of hearing, he was struck by how they had developed more solutions to enjoy concerts.”
根据第二段中“His team started by tying different vibrating cellphone motors to bodies, but that didn’t quite work. The vibrations were all the same.” 故选A项。
根据文章第三段“The vibrations are mixed by a haptic DJ who controls the location, frequency and intensity of feeling across the suits, just as a music DJ mixes sounds in an artful way. ‘What we’re doing is select and mix what we want and send it to different parts of the body,’ said the DJ. The haptic suits were just one component of the event. There were American Sign Language interpreters; the music was displayed on a screen on the stage.”
根据最后一段中“It’s cool, because I’m never quite sure if I’m hearing what other people are hearing, so it’s amazing to get the music in my body.”
根据第二段中“Predator control is a common challenge in areas where many animals, such as ground-nesting birds, cannot bear the impact of the increased number of predators.”以及“Besides, predator control by hunting can be hard and cannot be carried out everywhere or at any time…”
根据第三段中“In the first experimental sites, the researchers spread waterfowl’s smell in wetland areas. With the chemical camouflage (伪装), the researchers studied whether predators might fail to find the artificial bird nests.”
根据画线词前面的内容“The study showed that the chemical camouflage especially decreased the predation of the artificial bird nests by red foxes.”以及画线词后面的内容“We found red foxes might rely more on their sense of smell to find bird nests. The chemical smells could make most of them think the food they found could not be eaten…”
根据最后一段中“We’re wondering whether the results we observed with the artificial nests can also lead to the protection of real bird nests and a larger number of young birds…” 故选A。

第二节
One possible version:
Ethan felt a sense of warmth and hope wash over him as Mrs Wilkins spoke. Her words seemed to resonate deeply within him, touching the very core of his fears and doubts. He felt inspired, as if a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. “Maybe I can fly too,” he thought to himself, newfound determination burning within his heart. For the first time in a long while, he felt ready to face his fears and pursue his dream.
That night, for the first time in many years, Ethan picked up his brush. His hand trembled slightly as he dipped it into the paints, but there was newfound confidence in his eyes. He began to paint, and with each stroke, he felt more and more at ease. Colours swirled and blended on the canvas, creating a beautiful and vibrant scene. Ethan felt like he was finally giving life to the dream that had been buried deep within him for so long. As he stepped back to admire his work, a sense of pride and accomplishment washed over him. He knew that this was just the beginning of his journey, but he felt ready to take on whatever challenges lay ahead.

If art preserves the culture of the Crow people, then Crow women are the keepers of that culture, cultivating it to reflect the modern day.
Fashion designer Bethany Yellowtail grew up riding horses and running in the fields and swimming in the river and being around her people in the Crow Nation and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation in south-eastern Montana. She knows first-hand the importance of art to maintain native traditions. In 2015 she turned that knowledge into her own brand: B. Yellowtail. A year later, she created the B. Yellowtail Collective, made up of native artists, to foster economic opportunities for their communities. Many of those artists are women from different tribes, but all of them preserve their culture and move it forward through their medium of choice.
Yellowtail and her team work for the native-owned business that is rooted in the community. Artists within the Collective typically receive 70% of profit from retail sales, and for a portion of the pandemic (流行病) the brand has upped that to 100%. The extra money has, of course, increased artists’ income in the past year, but the relationship is interdependent: without the work of those artists, B. Yellowtail wouldn’t exist and native culture would feel the loss.
DeWanda Little Coyote is Yellowtail’s mother. Families are deeply important to their tribe. So is art, which often runs in the family—and along the matriarchal (母系的) side. Little Coyote picked up her entrepreneurial spirit from her parents, who owned a gift shop. “My parents said, ‘If you have hands, create something. Do something, and make a living off of that,’” she said. After her parents passed away, the artist began learning beading (串珠) earrings herself. Dentalium, a tusk shell often used in native jewellery, caught her eye in particular. “I love it, because back in the day, our Cheyenne women wore a lot of dentalium,” she said. “So I wanted to give a contemporary look to that—to what our ancestors wore.”
Yellowtail herself learned sewing from her aunts and grandmothers before moving to Los Angeles in 2007 to study fashion design. Now, native women support native women—and matriarchal art evolves.

When Belquer first joined a team to make a better live music experience for the deaf and the hard of hearing, he was struck by how they had developed more solutions to enjoy concerts. “What they were doing at the time was holding balloons to feel the vibrations (震动) through their fingers,” Belquer said. He thought the team could make something to help the hard of hearing enjoy live music even more with the technology now available.
Belquer, who is also a musician and theatre artist, is now the “Chief Vibration Officer” of Music: Not Impossible, which uses new technology to address social issues like poverty and disability access. His team started by tying different vibrating cellphone motors to bodies, but that didn’t quite work. The vibrations were all the same. Eventually, they worked with engineers to develop a light haptic (触觉的) suit with a total of 24 vibrating plates. There are 20 of them tied to an undershirt that fits tightly around the body like a hiking backpack, plus one that ties to each wrist and ankle. When you wear the suit, it’s surprising how it feels. The vibrations are mixed by a haptic DJ who controls the location, frequency and intensity of feeling across the suits, just as a music DJ mixes sounds in an artful way. “What we’re doing is select and mix what we want and send it to different parts of the body,” said the DJ. The haptic suits were just one component of the event. There were American Sign Language interpreters; the music was displayed on a screen on the stage.
The suits are the star attraction. Lily Lipman, who has auditory processing disorder, was delighted when asked about her experience. “It’s cool, because I’m never quite sure if I’m hearing what other people are hearing, so it’s amazing to get the music in my body.”
( )28.What surprised Belquer about people with hearing problems
A.The attitude they held to life.
B.The way they enjoyed music.
C.The love they had for balloons.
D.The frequency they vibrated fingers.
( )29.Why did the team’s initial attempt fail
A.The vibrations lacked variety.
B.The vibrations were irregular.
C.The motors were the same.
D.The motors hardly worked.

A.Displaying music on the stage.
B.Selecting proper suits for participants.
C.Mixed methods helping people feel the music.
D.Interpreters with excellent sign language skills.
( )31.What does Lily Lipman think of the suit
A.It’s comforting. B.It’s challenging.

A study was carried out as a cooperation programme among researchers at the universities of Turku (Finland), Sydney (Australia) and Córdoba (Spain). Those researchers used artificial nests (人工鸟巢) to test two methods for reducing the nest predation (捕食) of endangered ground-nesting birds.
Predator control is a common challenge in areas where many animals, such as ground-nesting birds, cannot bear the impact of the increased number of predators. For example, in areas that have fewer top predators, the red fox population can be overly large for the areas they live in. Besides, predator control by hunting can be hard and cannot be carried out everywhere or at any time, for example, during the birds’ nesting season. In such cases, the foxes can cause a decline in the populations of some birds.
In the first experimental sites, the researchers spread waterfowl’s smell in wetland areas. With the chemical camouflage (伪装), the researchers studied whether predators might fail to find the artificial bird nests. In other areas, the researchers used eggs giving off an unpleasant smell which could cause discomfort with the goal of making predators believe that the bird eggs were not eatable. The researchers also used control sites which they visited as frequently as the experimental sites to stop predators from making the right choices.
The study showed that the chemical camouflage especially decreased the predation of the artificial bird nests by red foxes. “Unlike other predators, red foxes were more easily deceived into not eating bird eggs than some other predators. We found red foxes might rely more on their sense of smell to find bird nests. The chemical smells could make most of them think the food they found could not be eaten,” explains Senior Researcher Vesa Selonen from the University of Turku.
“Our results are interesting as they show that these approaches could reduce the nest predation of endangered birds. We’re wondering whether the results we observed with the artificial nests can also lead to the protection of real bird nests and a larger number of young birds,” says Professor Toni Laaksonen from the University of Turku.
( )32.What does the author want to show by mentioning predator control
A.The number of red foxes is out of control.
B.The living areas of ground-nesting birds are limited.
C.Predator control and hunting should be applied together.
D.New solutions to fighting predation are necessary.
( )33.What effect did the researchers intend to produce when spreading the bird smell
A.Driving away the smart predators.
B.Causing the bird eggs to be unsuitable for eating.
C.Making the wetland areas attractive to the predators.
D.Confusing the predators about the location of nests.
( )34.What does the underlined word “deceived” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Forced. B.Raised.
C.Cheated. D.Frightened.
( )35.What will the researchers probably do next
A.Put their research methods into practice.
B.Search for new sites to continue the experiments.
C.Perfect their methods to study birds’ nesting behaviour.
D.Develop more methods of designing artificial nests.

We’re lucky to live in an age when the sum total of human knowledge is pretty available at the click of a button. We’ve never had access to so much information. 36. . So here are a few strategies to sharpen your critical thinking.
Watch out for confirmation prejudice (偏见). 37. . In repeated experiments, psychologists have shown we’re much more likely to accept something as evidence if it confirms what we already think we know. And we’re much more likely to ignore information if it is not in line with our views, which will affect our ability to process information.
Acknowledge small differences. In life, most situations are varying and complicated. Admitting that can enrich the way that we view the world. For example, what colour is the sky Well, the obvious answer is blue. But at sunrise or sunset, it can be red. On a cold misty morning, white or grey. 38. .
Practise intellectual humility (谦逊). One approach to, well, arguing, is to let go of the idea of being “right”. Or at least seriously consider that you might actually be wrong. 39. . Really try to understand where the other person is coming from. Arguing is just to waste somebody’s time.
40. . It’s more important than ever to know where your information is coming from. That science-looking paragraphs might look very convincing until you dig a little deeper and find it was just posted by someone having no qualifications. That is the case we should not overlook.
Engaging in critical thinking isn’t as fun as picking up a pitchfork, or feeling like you’re fundamentally right. But in the long run, it leads to more curious, educated and harmonious society, which is the biggest win of all.
A.Avoid mistakes
B.Check your sources
C.We all enjoy feeling like we’re right
D.But not all of what’s out there is quite what it seems
E.So pay attention to differences in many situations
F.So don’t rush to decide, and be actively prepared to change your mind
G.Putting yourself into the other person’s shoes can have more fruitful outcomes

Ethan was a young man living in a small town. He was a bright soul with dreams, but he was also trapped by the chains of fear and doubt.
Ethan worked at a small bookshop, yet deep within, he had a strong desire to become a painter. Every evening, as the setting sun painted the sky in orange and pink, Ethan would sit by his window, a blank canvas (油画布) before him. Yet, no stroke (笔画) graced the canvas. The fear of failure and the whispers of doubt prevented him from painting. “What if I’m not good enough ” he often thought.
One cold autumn evening, an unexpected visitor came knocking at Ethan’s door—Mrs Wilkins, an elderly well-known woman of wisdom. “Ethan,” she began gently, “I’ve noticed the light in your room night after night, and yet, I’ve seen no colour grace the world from your hands. Why is that ”
Ethan sighed, the weight of his unspoken dream heavy on his shoulders. He whispered, “I’m afraid that I’ll never be good enough and that my work will never touch the hearts of others.”
Mrs Wilkins smiled, a kind, understanding smile. “Ethan,” she said, drawing closer, “let me tell you a story of a young bird, much like yourself, afraid to leave its nest. The little bird was always scared of the thought of flight. Day after day, it watched other birds fly into the sky, while it remained where it was, full of fear. The bird feared the unknown, feared failure, and most of all, feared that its wings were not strong enough to carry itself. But then, one day, a storm approached, and the little bird had no choice but to jump into the storm. It was not an easy journey. The winds were very strong, and the rain blinded its eyes. Yet, with each flap (拍打) of its wings, the bird realized that it was able to fly.”
Paragraph 1:
Ethan felt a sense of warmth and hope wash over him as Mrs Wilkins spoke.
Paragraph 2:
That night, for the first time in many years, Ethan picked up his brush.
