W: Yes, I’m sure you will get many nice gifts too.
Text 2
M: What a beautiful painting! Where did you buy it
W: Actually, I made it in my grandpa’s yard.
M: Really That’s amazing! I had no idea you were so talented. This looks like it was painted by a professional.
Text 3
M: Excuse me, can we leave our backpack and suitcase here
W: OK. That’s 4 dollars for the suitcase and 3 dollars for the backpack.
M: Fine, thanks. We’ll come and get them around 2 this afternoon.
Text 4
M: If it were not for the price, I would like to move somewhere with a nicer view than we have here.
W: But for me, the most important thing is to have large bedrooms and a good-sized kitchen.
Text 5
W: Nick Jones! Is that you We studied French and German together in Professor Brown’s class. Remember We always sat next to each other.
M: Anne White! Of course I remember. Anne, long time no see!
Text 6
W: Excuse me. I was wondering if anyone has turned in a passport. I can’t find mine anywhere in my hotel room and I remember the last place where I used it yesterday was in this department store. I had to show it to pay for those shoes with my traveller’s cheques.
M: Let me check. Sorry, your passport hasn’t turned up here either.
W: What shall I do
M: You can fill in this form to declare your loss first, then make a phone call to your embassy and tell them about your situation, so that they can give you a new passport in case it doesn’t show up.
W: You are right.
Text 7
M: Good morning. Since so many of you have asked me how to learn a language, I thought it might be useful to take some class time today to discuss it. Betty, you speak several foreign languages, don’t you
W: Yes, I speak Spanish and French.
M: And can you tell me what helped you most in learning these languages
W: Well, I studied both languages in high school, and I’m still studying Spanish here at the university. But I think travel has probably been the most helpful to me.
M: Yes. When you live in a country where the language you are learning is spoken, it’s perfect.
W: That’s true. But whether or not I’m living in a country where the language is spoken, I always watch TV or listen to the radio in the language I’m trying to learn.
M: That’s good.
Text 8
M: Tina, I’m sorry to bother you, but I’m afraid there is a big problem.
W: Oh, what’s up then
M: You told me last week that you would deal with the faulty desks returned by HDC, one of our local customers.
W: Yes, that’s right, I did send them the replacements for all the desks last Monday.
M: Well, the thing is, did you realize there were two kinds of faulty desks The customer only received one kind of desks.
W: Oh dear. I didn’t realize there were two kinds. I’ll send them the other kind right away.
M: The problem is that now they want to get their money back.
W: Oh dear, that’s really bad. I’ll phone them now and explain everything. I’m really sorry about this.
M: That’s all right. There’s still time to solve the problem. I think it would be best to visit them and explain the mistake face to face.
W: Okay. I’ll make arrangements and visit them as soon as possible. Sorry again.
Text 9
M: Well, Stella, why do you look unhappy
W: Oh, Bill, I have just had a quarrel with Mr Philips.
M: What on earth was it about
W: Well, I have made three bad mistakes so far this week. Today I forgot to give him an important message, so he got really angry with me.
M: But I don’t understand. You are usually very careful.
W: I’m just so tired.
M: Why Have you been going to bed late these days
W: No. I’m usually in bed at about eleven. But I’ve been woken up early every morning.
M: Why
W: It’s my new neighbour. He has to get up at half past four and he always turns the radio on loudly.
M: Ask him to turn it down or if you don’t want to see him, write him a letter.
W: Do you think it’s a good idea
M: Yes, I do. I’ll help you with the letter.
W: OK. Let’s try.
Text 10
W: What’s the attraction of coffee shops It’s been said that J.K. Rowling wrote the Harry Potter books sitting in one in Edinburgh. But you’re spending all day buying one expensive coffee after another and haven’t sold your first novel yet, the costs can really add up. For those who work outside of a traditional office or just want to take time out, there’s a new alternative in London: a pay-per-minute cafe. You’ll be given a clock when you come in to keep time. When you leave, you return the item and pay the bill. The cost of hanging out, eating, working and meeting new people in the place is 3 pennies per minute or £1.80 an hour. Customers help themselves to coffee and cookies. They can also bring their own food to eat while accessing the Internet through Wi-Fi. The new coffee shop’s atmosphere is relaxing. The shop’s owner, Ivan Meetin, believes his coffee shop is a bit like “social media”, but with a face. Like-minded people go there to socialize. Some feel so much at home that they wash the dishes. The concept of coffee shops, where you pay for the time and not for the cup, has proved popular in Russia. Only time will tell if the British will warm to the idea.

第一节
A
第一个小标题Golden Gate Bridge, USA中的“…the Golden Gate Bridge was built in the 1930s…”
第二个小标题Banff National Park, Canada中的“Home to alpine peaks, glacial lakes, and the famous Icefields Parkway scenic drive, Banff is a heaven for lovers of natural beauty and adventure.”和第三个小标题Balboa Park, USA中的“The park is full of history, architecture, art, and beautiful nature.”
The Great Pyramid of Giza, Egypt中的“As the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one that still remains well-preserved today, the Great Pyramid of Giza is a truly fantastic scene.”
根据第一段中的“After over a decade of faithful service my old desktop computer finally died. It simply wouldn’t start.”
根据第一段中的“It was like going from driving an old Model T Ford to flying the space shuttle.”以及第二段中的“…only to find that it wasn’t on this model.”、“…it wouldn’t work.”、“…had a terrible time downloading…”、“Then there were some difficulties of transferring…”和“…I had screwed up the settings so badly…”
根据第二段中的“Finally after two days I think we have set up the new computer to do the few simple things I need it to do so I can ignore the thousand other functions that I have no use for.”
根据最后一段中的“Be a person, not a program.”和“Fill your days with purpose, your years with happiness, and your life with love.”
根据第二段中“First, he asks us to take into account how we represent reality to ourselves, and how we see it in relation to the self. This requires us to employ awareness of not just the world but also the concepts to describe it to ourselves and others. Moreover, ‘the reality’ we believe we see and know might be an illusion (幻觉).”(首先,他要求我们考虑我们如何向自己呈现现实,以及我们如何将现实与自我联系起来。这要求我们不仅要运用对世界的意识,还要运用对自己和他人描述世界的概念的意识。此外,我们相信的以及我们看到和知道的“现实”可能是一种错觉。)可知,Mu oz-Rengel的第一个说服步骤暗示了我们倾向于以主观的方式看待现实。故选D。
29.B 推理判断题。根据第四段第一句“From here Mu oz-Rengel takes a third step towards what he calls ‘evolutionary epistemology (认识论)’, which shows everything we claim to know should be evaluated through an evolutionary angle.”(从这里Mu oz-Rengel向他所谓的“进化认识论”迈出了第三步,这表明我们声称知道的一切都应该从进化的角度来评估。)
根据第四段第二句中的“…to stay safe from natural enemies or hunt for food, some animals evolve into being capable of mixing with the surroundings…”(为了躲避天敌或寻找食物,一些动物进化成能够与周围环境融为一体……)
根据最后一段第一句和第二句“The arguments in this book are strongly made, but more than a few of Mu oz-Rengel’s viewpoints need far more evidence as support. But anyhow, in separating the discussion from conventional morality-based studies of lying, he has produced a lively and distinctive work.”(这本书中的论点是强有力的,但Mu oz-Rengel的许多观点需要更多的证据作为支持。
根据文章第一段“Studies have shown the mere exposure effect, also referred to as the familiarity principle, inspires our decisions. It is a helpful psychological mechanism that helps us sustain our energy and focus our attention on other things. Getting used to new things takes effort and it can be exhausting. So unless we have a terrible experience, we are likely to buy from companies we’ve got used to. That is why companies spend so much money on advertising and marketing and why insurance companies openly charge existing customers more than new ones.”(研究表明,单纯的暴露效应,也被称为熟悉原则,会激发我们的决定。
根据文章第二段“It’s not the case that we only desire things we already know. Some studies suggest when invited to share our preferences, we sometimes see less familiar options as more desirable. But when acting on that preference, we fall back to what we know. This might explain why sometimes the things we want and the things we do don’t quite match up. We might even return to companies that treated us poorly in the past or stay in bad relationships.”(这并不是说我们只想要已知的东西。
根据文章第三段“While this can appear effective in the short run, we may only end up replacing one problem with another. It also risks overwhelming and burnout.”(虽然这在短期内看起来是有效的,但我们最终可能只是用一个问题代替另一个问题。 故选A。
根据文章第一段“Studies have shown the mere exposure effect, also referred to as the familiarity principle, inspires our decisions. It is a helpful psychological mechanism that helps us sustain our energy and focus our attention on other things. Getting used to new things takes effort and it can be exhausting.”以及最后一段“We can broaden the zone of familiarity bit by bit. If we think of familiarity as something that can expand, we can consider changing the conditions in and around our lives to make more space for our preferences to take root and grow gently. From here, we will start to make decisions, drawing from an ever-deepening pool of valuable options.”(我们可以一点一点地扩大熟悉范围。
36.A 根据前文“Failure is a bitter pill to swallow, isn’t it But, it’s often in the most difficult moments, in the ashes of defeat, that we find our greatest opportunities for growth.”以及后文“This guide will look into the common challenges associated with learning from failure and how to overcome them.” 故选A项。
37.G 根据本段小标题“Dealing with emotional stress and burnout”以及前文“Failure often comes with a heavy emotional burden.”
根据前文“After a failure, it’s easy to lose sight of your original vision. But maintaining your focus on your long-term goals is critical. Take a step back, reflect on your vision, and rearrange your strategies accordingly. Yes, you might need to adjust your plans or timelines, but don’t let failure ruin your overall vision.”
39.B 根据后文“Analyse your mistakes, draw lessons, and use those insights to refine your strategies. With each failure, you’re beginning with more experience.”
根据后文“It’s merely a detour on the road to success. It offers an incomparable opportunity for growth and innovation. By addressing these challenges with the right mindset, you can transform your setbacks into comebacks and transform failure into your stepping stone towards success.”

One possible version:
Dear Mike,
I’m writing to share with you my recent experience in a labour activity on a farm.
Last Saturday was May Day, when my class participated in the labour practice held in our school. At dawn, we cycled to the farm. On arrival, we were shown around by our teacher and then assigned different tasks. Under the teacher’s patient instructions, we turned over the soil, weeded, planted vegetables like tomatoes and eggplants and watered them. Looking at lines of young green vegetables, the teacher cheerfully said we’d enjoy our self-grown vegetables soon, which filled us with a sense of achievement.
The meaningful activity offered us a chance to learn about farming. Besides, though tired, I did feel the pleasure and value of labour.
Yours,
Li Hua

One possible version:
A week later, Jon received a call from the company. Shifting uneasily in his chair(现在分词作状语), he picked up the phone. “Yes, this is Jon,” he said, trying to keep his voice steady(现在分词作状语). I watched him, my heart pounding(独立主格结构). As he continued to speak, his face lit up with an excited smile. When he hung up, he turned to me, eyes shining(独立主格结构). He told me that they were really impressed with his interview(宾语从句), but what really stood out (主语从句) were the thank-you notes. The CEO mentioned that he was touched by the notes and appreciated the effort Jon put into thanking everyone(定语从句), including the receptionist. I felt a rush of pride and relief. I knew it would work.
The next day after work, I found a thank-you note on my bedside table. Surprised(形容词作状语), I picked it up, unfolded it, and was greeted with Jon’s familiar handwriting. It was a thank-you note from Jon. He thanked me for pushing him to do his best and for teaching him the importance of gratitude, which had truly changed his life(定语从句). As I read the note, tears welled up in my eyes. I had always believed in the power of gratitude and a thank-you note, but seeing it come full circle like this (现在分词作主语) was more rewarding than I could have ever imagined. Jon was not only succeeding in his career but also growing into a thoughtful and compassionate man. And that was the greatest gift of all.

After over a decade of faithful service my old desktop computer finally died. It simply wouldn’t start. With no computer repair places open my daughter talked me into purchasing a new laptop to replace it. What followed was two days of pure frustration. It was like going from driving an old Model T Ford to flying the space shuttle.
After my daughter set it up, I looked for the old e-mail program I used to use, only to find that it wasn’t on this model. When I tried to download the older version again, it wouldn’t work. I also had a terrible time downloading my old word processing program again. Then there were some difficulties of transferring all of my old stories that I had saved on a jump drive. The laptop computer’s fancy new programs were an icon minefield that I had to navigate. Each time I accidentally touched one of them, it changed everything on my screen and I had to work hard to figure out how to change them back. In the end I had screwed up the settings so badly that I asked my daughter to do a reset so we could start over. Finally after two days I think we have set up the new computer to do the few simple things I need it to do so I can ignore the thousand other functions that I have no use for. I only hope it will work as long and faithfully as my old desktop did.
One thing I did learn from all of this is that when it comes to computers and life I want to keep things simple, simple, simple. Life is simple. Love is simple. It is we who make things complicated. Take some time today then to turn off your electronics and turn on your heart. Be a person, not a program. Be yourself, not your “Selfie”. Fill your days with purpose, your years with happiness, and your life with love.

Many of us would probably say that lying is a matter of moral choice. But in his philosophy book A History of Lying, Juan Jacinto Mu oz-Rengel takes us in a different direction, which he calls “non-moral”.
He takes several persuasive steps to redirect us. First, he asks us to take into account how we represent reality to ourselves, and how we see it in relation to the self. This requires us to employ awareness of not just the world but also the concepts to describe it to ourselves and others. Moreover, “the reality” we believe we see and know might be an illusion (幻觉). So how do we even know when we’re telling the truth, and when we’re lying about it
His second step is to say that our sense of personal identity should be treated with doubt, since we’re frequently wrong about our own experiences. If continuing personal identity might be an illusion, then the reality we see might be an illusion as well. But we choose to take part like actors in this illusion.
From here Mu oz-Rengel takes a third step towards what he calls “evolutionary epistemology (认识论)”, which shows everything we claim to know should be evaluated through an evolutionary angle. For instance, to stay safe from natural enemies or hunt for food, some animals evolve into being capable of mixing with the surroundings to delude others. The thing is, the species continues through natural selection processes. Equally, we grow myths to explain the natural world and our place in it…As individuals and as societies, various forms of lies are built into our DNA.
The arguments in this book are strongly made, but more than a few of Mu oz-Rengel’s viewpoints need far more evidence as support. But anyhow, in separating the discussion from conventional morality-based studies of lying, he has produced a lively and distinctive work. But still, there is one thing to remember—we perhaps will be liars, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t ask ourselves when it is acceptable to lie and when it isn’t.
( )28.What can be implied about Mu oz-Rengel’s first persuasive step
A.We can hardly control what we do in real life.
B.We are able to tell illusions from reality.
C.We choose to lie or not in different cases.
D.We tend to see reality in a subjective way.
( )29.Why does Mu oz-Rengel give the examples in Paragraph 4
A.To make a comparison.
B.To clarify a concept.
C.To raise a problem.
D.To change a topic.
( )30.What does the underlined word “delude” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Surprise. B.Trick.
C.Amuse. D.Protect.
( )31.How does the author find the arguments in this book
A.One-sided but convincing.
B.Conventional but impressive.
C.Poorly-based but novel.
D.Serious but understandable.

Studies have shown the mere exposure effect, also referred to as the familiarity principle, inspires our decisions. It is a helpful psychological mechanism that helps us sustain our energy and focus our attention on other things. Getting used to new things takes effort and it can be exhausting. So unless we have a terrible experience, we are likely to buy from companies we’ve got used to. That is why companies spend so much money on advertising and marketing and why insurance companies openly charge existing customers more than new ones.
It’s not the case that we only desire things we already know. Some studies suggest when invited to share our preferences, we sometimes see less familiar options as more desirable. But when acting on that preference, we fall back to what we know. This might explain why sometimes the things we want and the things we do don’t quite match up. We might even return to companies that treated us poorly in the past or stay in bad relationships.
It’s easy to paint the familiarity principle as an enemy or something to battle as if it is something that holds us back from living our dreams. But this attitude might be overwhelming because it tends to encourage us towards big-picture thinking. Where we imagine that change requires a substantial dramatic swing that we don’t feel ready for. Some articles suggest the solution to familiarity frustration is complete exposure to novelty. While this can appear effective in the short run, we may only end up replacing one problem with another. It also risks overwhelming and burnout.
So what if we can work with the familiarity principle instead Familiarity is something we can learn to play with and enjoy. It is a setting for creativity and a pathway to expansion. We can broaden the zone of familiarity bit by bit. If we think of familiarity as something that can expand, we can consider changing the conditions in and around our lives to make more space for our preferences to take root and grow gently. From here, we will start to make decisions, drawing from an ever-deepening pool of valuable options.
( )32.What allows insurance companies to charge old customers more
A.The improved service.
B.The advertising cost.
C.The familiarity principle.
D.The law of the market.
( )33.What can be learned from Paragraph 2
A.Our preferences affect our decisions.
B.Familiarity tends to generate disrespect.
C.The familiarity principle is a double-edged sword.
D.There can be a mismatch between desires and actions.
( )34.What is the author’s attitude towards the solution in some articles
A.Disapproving. B.Tolerant.
C.Objective. D.Reserved.
( )35.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Step out of your familiarity zone
B.Spare a thought for your preference
C.Gently expand your familiarity zone
D.Give priority to the mere exposure effect

“Did you write your thank-you notes ” I asked my son, Jon.
“No, not yet, mum,” Jon replied, rolling his eyes.
He promised to do it when he got back from Kim’s house. However, I demanded that he not leave the house until he finished writing a note to everyone he came in contact with during the job interview.
“Even the receptionist who was rude to me ” Jon asked with a confused expression.
“Especially her!”
Jon was home on the Christmas break from college and had just finished interviewing with his first-choice company in Cleveland, Ohio. It was a rare opportunity considering that jobs were in short supply.
The power of a thank-you note is something I drilled into my boy from the time he was old enough to hold a pencil. It didn’t matter if it was for a birthday, Christmas or graduation. Every gift had to be acknowledged with sincere gratitude within twenty-four hours.
Growing up, my mum was a stickler for thank-you notes. But she phrased it in such a way that it came across not as a threat but as a privilege. She’d say, “Your words of sincere gratitude have the power to change someone’s life for the better—even if it’s just for a moment.” Her advice changed my life, and it was my hope that it would change Jon’s life as well.
After an hour, Jon emerged from his room and handed over eight thank-you notes. To my delight, they were all sincere and heartfelt, even the one to the receptionist who had been less than friendly. Before Jon left to visit Kim, he turned to me and announced that he was pretty sure a thank-you note to the CEO or the receptionist wasn’t going to land him the job. With a smile, I told him to wait and see.
Jon was twenty-one years old, and I felt foolish telling a grown man what to do, but I also didn’t want him living in our basement for the rest of his life!
Paragraph 1:
A week later, Jon received a call from the company.
Paragraph 2:
The next day after work, I found a thank-you note on my bedside table.
