Text 1
W: What a memory I have! I did write down Mr Smith’s e-mail address on a piece of paper, but now it is nowhere to be found!
M: Don’t worry. I’ll be seeing him in an hour. I can ask him for his e-mail address when I see him.
Text 2
W: Good morning, I have an appointment with Diane Kennedy at 11 o’clock. And I’m Jane Taylor.
M: Oh, she’s answering a call now. Can you complete this security form, please
W: Of course. Can you give me a pen
Text 3
W: Have you read this new best-seller by Mike Brooklyn
M: No, I haven’t. I’m not really into fiction.
W: I think you’d like this one—it’s a very fast paced adventure, and Brooklyn has a wild imagination.
M: Really Maybe I’ll try to read it when I’m on vacation.
Text 4
M: Can you change the room for me It’s too noisy.
W: Sorry, we don’t have any spare room today. Could you wait till tomorrow The American People-to-People Education Delegation will be leaving tomorrow morning.
Text 5
W: Do you have plans this weekend
M: Yes, it is my daughter’s birthday. We will have a barbecue.
W: Sweet, tell her happy birthday! I think my daughter will buy her a nice present.
Text 6
W: I’m calling to confirm my flight to New York this Saturday. My name is Jane Austin, and my flight number is K701.
M: Yes, Ms Austin. Your name is here in our computer. Your plane takes off at 9:00 am. And I’d like to remind you to please come to the airport two hours before your take-off time to get your seating arrangements.
W: Thank you. By the way, could you tell me once again how long my flight will be
M: The total number of hours is 16 hours because you have a two-hour stopover at Los Angeles Airport.
Text 7
W: Oh, it’s so nice to be out of the cinema. It was so hot there!
M: Terrible, wasn’t it Well, what did you think of Madame Curie Do you think it is as good as the reviews said
W: It’s a good film, but not as good as the book. I think some parts of the story were missing in the film.
M: Yes, but you couldn’t possibly fit everything that happens in a 200-page novel into a 2-hour film.
W: I know. But the director should at least try to follow the story. In this film he left out some important people and even changed the ending.
M: Well, perhaps he thought he was improving the story, Karen.
W: Perhaps he did, but I just don’t think a film director has the right.
Text 8
W: Which colour do you think I should wear to meet the client
M: What You’ve been picking out the clothes since 8:00. Twenty minutes have passed and you still haven’t made a choice
W: You know I always have problems making decisions.
M: Before we went on our trip last month, you had been thinking a lot about where to travel. Yesterday you spent a long time thinking about whether to have a hotpot or barbecue.
W: It does often take me a long time to make a decision, but only by comparison can I know what is right and what is wrong. The more I care about things, the more I struggle to choose.
M: Hmm…It doesn’t matter what is right or wrong because there is no absolute right or wrong in life. You never know which is suitable unless you try it. So spending a long time making decisions doesn’t make sense.
W: OK, OK. Stop here.
M: Sure. I’ll drive Tom to school first.
Text 9
M: You need a break. You’ve been cooking every night. I’m sorry I haven’t been helping out, but I’ve had to work late all month. Let’s go out to dinner tonight.
W: That would be wonderful.
M: I’ve heard of a new Indian restaurant downtown. How does that sound
W: You know I love Indian food!
M: Well, this place should be very good. The food is more like traditional cooking—like what Indian mothers would make at home.
W: Sounds good! I had a friend in college who was from India. Sometimes I would go over to her house on the weekend. Her grandmother would cook for us. It was probably the tastiest food I’ve ever had!
M: All right, then let’s go. The place closes at 8:30, so we’d better leave now. It’ll take about half an hour to get there, because we’ll have to find a parking place, too.
W: I wonder why the restaurant closes so early. It’s a Friday night. Restaurants are usually open late on weekends.
M: I’ll bet the cook is an Indian mother who needs to get home to her children!
Text 10
W: And now, finally, the time has come to announce the winner of our art competition. I know you’re all excited to be here and looking forward to finding out the first-prize winner who will be awarded the opportunity to display their art in exhibitions at our art galleries across the country, as well as the $5,000 cash prize. We’ll also announce the lucky runner-up, who will be going home with a $1,000 cash prize. Before I start, I have to tell you that one of the contestants, Rose O’Brien, has decided to remove herself from the competition as she was offered an opportunity elsewhere—which is not surprising, considering she had the second highest score given by the judges. But let’s focus on our remaining three contestants: Maria Sanchez, John Krakow and Donald Wreck. All of them deserve recognition and congratulations for making it this far. It has been a very tough competition with more than a thousand entries, so you should all be very proud of yourselves. So, after counting the votes from our gallery’s members and combining them with the judges’ scores, we are happy to announce that the winner of the competition is…Oh, wow…Incredibly, the winner is our youngest contestant, with no formal art training…Congratulations to Donald Wreck, with My Sister Emily!

第一节
A
根据第三段“It brings a cast of over sixty actors delivering their characteristic performance. Together, they reflected the changes in the then Chinese society through the Yutai Teahouse, a place where people from all walks of life came together.”
根据第四段“…Teahouse is a must-see for everyone interested in contemporary Chinese literature, and anyone interested in catching a glimpse of the remarkable changes in modern China within two hours and thirty minutes.”
根据第五段“Tickets are now available to purchase for the price of just $100 apiece (每人) at the booking office. You will enjoy a 5% discount off the price if you purchase tickets through our website or app. For our local theatregoers who have bought our yearly plan, an extra 5% discount will also come your way.”
根据第一段“Like so many other ABCs (American-born Chinese) and younger first- and second-generation Chinese immigrants (移民), sisters Sarah and Kaitlin Leung reached a point in their adult lives when they started to long for the Chinese food they’d grown up on, but found it really difficult to learn how to prepare it. There was such a “representation gap”, as Sarah puts it, in terms of what kinds of cuisines were noticeably featured in those early days of TV celebrity chefs and the emerging food blogosphere (博客圈).”
根据第二段“As it turns out, though, the Leungs were uniquely positioned to do something about it…food-obsessed culture.”以及第三段“So, in 2013, the Leungs started The Woks of Life.”
根据第三段“What distinguished their blog from others was that the intergenerational heritage (传承) of knowledge that the Leungs were so eager for was baked right into the concept: the four family members took turns posting recipes, each sharing their own favourites, tapping into their own areas of expert knowledge.”
根据倒数第二段“Asian Americans look to reconnect with the food of their heritage.”
根据第二段“The researchers are now in the midst of the process to grow new roots from the cuttings. The reason: to clone the historic tree, store its DNA and plant potentially thousands of cloned trees across the south-east.” 故选A。
根据第四段“The most common method is by rooted cuttings. In this method, a tip of a tree’s branch is dipped (浸) into hormones, placed into a foam plug (泡沫塞) and set inside a mist room. Then, the waiting begins. A sign of life can take several months to a year to show, if one comes at all. In another method called tissue culture, researchers take a quarter-inch of branch, dip it into a mixture made up of a dozen hormones and other chemicals, seal it in a container and wait to see whether it will grow roots.”(最常见的方法是生根扦插。 可知,在描述这两种方法时,作者用了“if one comes at all”和“whether it will grow roots”等字眼,由此可推知,这两种方法都有可能无法使树枝生根。
根据画线单词所在句子“Experts lauded the group for its creative methods and reproduction in large numbers, but they doubt whether the clones will grow as the originals do.”
根据最后一段“He added that the age of historic trees makes them difficult to study. ‘I think it’s a great thing that they’re doing…I just don’t know how realistic it is.’”(他补充说,古树的年龄使得研究它们很困难。
故选A。
由文章第二段“In his book Solitude, Netta Weinstein, a psychology professor wonders the rewards of time spent alone. He begins with an account of stories of solitude created by figures such as Michel de Montaigne, a writer, and Edward Hopper, a ta then draws on laboratory work, interviews and surveys to clarify how being alone really affects the human mind.”
由文章第三段中“Loneliness, often perceived as negative, can potentially be transformed into a positive experience of solitude.”
由文章最后一段中“Elective solitude, by contrast, affords space for self-reflection. It can open the door to ‘peak experiences’ such as wonder, harmony, and happiness. In a highly-connected digital age, however, many readers do not fancy their chances of ever taking a long enough break to have such experiences.”

38.E 由下文“To deal with my headaches, the treatment began on the back of my hand, far from my head.”
39.G 由上文“The electricity was turned on, and the doctor left the room.”和下文“Around the 5-minute mark, the doctor returned and adjusted the electricity level.”
40.B 由上文“I returned to the doctor for a total of 10 sessions, and each time the same routine was repeated and the same herbal medicine was given. The true benefits of the acupuncture treatment became clear: I remained free of headaches for 2 years.”和下文“If you’ve experienced similar conditions, I highly recommend trying it.”

One possible version:
Their first day at the therapy centre was filled with uncertainty. The children, accustomed to their own company or limited interactions(形容词作定语), were initially cautious about Buddy. Some avoided eye contact, while others stood still observing from a distance(现在分词作状语). Buddy sensed the anxiety too, sitting patiently and occasionally offering a gentle touch with his nose(现在分词作状语) to a child who seemed less afraid(定语从句). Despite the initial challenges, Sarah was confident that Buddy would eventually adapt to this new environment and make a positive impact(宾语从句).
As the weeks progressed, Sarah noticed a remarkable change both in the children and Buddy. The once timid dog now eagerly approached the children, gently touching their hands with his nose and wagging his tail enthusiastically(现在分词作状语). In return, the children would stroke his soft fur and share their snacks with him. Their fear and hesitation gradually changed into smiles and laughter as they began to trust and form bonds with Buddy(时间状语从句). It was evident that (形式主语)the journey of transformation that began in the animal shelter(定语从句) now extended to the therapy centre, where Buddy’s presence brought joy and comfort to those in need(定语从句).

Beijing People’s Art Theatre, arguably the most famous professional theatre company in China, will present Teahouse by Lao She, which is the cornerstone of its repertory (剧目), as its New York City(NYC) appearance.
Teahouse will play at the Michael Schimmel Centre for the Arts in NYC from 27 Nov. to 1 Dec. this year. The production will be performed in Mandarin Chinese with simultaneous (同时的) English translation through headphones.
Teahouse is set in a typical, old Beijing teahouse and follows the lives of the owner and his customers through three stages in modern Chinese history, from approximately 1898 to 1948. The production in NYC will be the final stop of a US tour that has also included performances in Houston and Los Angeles. As a well-received classic in its homeland, Teahouse is a must-see for everyone interested in contemporary Chinese literature, and anyone interested in catching a glimpse of the remarkable changes in modern China within two hours and thirty minutes.
Tickets are now available to purchase for the price of just $100 apiece (每人) at the booking office. Like so many other ABCs (American-born Chinese) and younger first-and second-generation Chinese immigrants (移民), sisters Sarah and Kaitlin Leung reached a point in their adult lives when they started to long for the Chinese food they’d grown up on, but found it really difficult to learn how to prepare it. There was such a “representation gap”, as Sarah puts it, in terms of what kinds of cuisines were noticeably featured in those early days of TV celebrity chefs and the emerging food blogosphere (博客圈).
As it turns out, though, the Leungs were uniquely positioned to do something about it. Bill, the father, had spent years cooking beef at his family’s Chinese American takeout restaurant. Judy, the mum, was born and raised in Shanghai and had deep knowledge about traditional Shanghainese cooking. Meanwhile, the two sisters had grown up in the New Jersey suburbs, eating their parents’ food, but also growing in America’s own food-obsessed culture.
So, in 2013, the Leungs started The Woks of Life. What distinguished their blog from others was that the intergenerational heritage (传承) of knowledge that the Leungs were so eager for was baked right into the concept: the four family members took turns posting recipes, each sharing their own favourites, tapping into their own areas of expert knowledge.
Kaitlin is proud that The Woks of Life follows a long line of pioneers—folks like Joyce Chen, Martin Yan and Ming Tsai, who first started to bring Chinese home cooking into the mainstream in the US. “We feel proud that we have made a meaningful mark over the past decade, casting light that there’s a huge demand for these recipes,” she says.“It’s about representation, yes, but there’s also a huge demand. Asian Americans look to reconnect with the food of their heritage.”
Five years ago, you wouldn’t have been able to find a ton of Chinese recipes in the New York Times food section, Kaitlin notes. Now you can.

“Big Tree”, an old southern live oak, sits in a park just outside Orlando’s business district. It’s been struck by lightning at least three times and has survived many hurricanes—and it grew from a seed around the same time Juan Ponce de León’s ship first landed on Florida’s eastern coast.
Over 400 years old, the tree is so impressive that members of a Michigan-based non-profit flew to Orlando in February to climb the tree and cut branches and leaves. The researchers are now in the midst of the process to grow new roots from the cuttings. The reason: to clone the historic tree, store its DNA and plant potentially thousands of cloned trees across the south-east.
In order to clone an ancient tree, researchers must climb it to find a piece of live tissue. The freshly cut branches and leaves are taken to the group’s lab in Michigan, where, in climate-controlled rooms, researchers work to promote growth from the cuttings.
The most common method is by rooted cuttings. In this method, a tip of a tree’s branch is dipped (浸) into hormones, placed into a foam plug (泡沫塞) and set inside a mist room. Then, the waiting begins. A sign of life can take several months to a year to show, if one comes at all. In another method called tissue culture, researchers take a quarter-inch of branch, dip it into a mixture made up of a dozen hormones and other chemicals, seal it in a container and wait to see whether it will grow roots.
Experts lauded the group for its creative methods and reproduction in large numbers, but they doubt whether the clones will grow as the originals do. Scott Merkle, a professor of forest biology at the University of Georgia, said, “There are so many variables that there’s no certainty that they will be able to survive and perform better than other trees that you plant on the same land.” He added that the age of historic trees makes them difficult to study. “I think it’s a great thing that they’re doing…I just don’t know how realistic it is.”
( )28.According to the passage, what do the researchers aim to do
A.To clone an ancient tree from its original.
B.To save thousands of trees across the south-east.
C.To analyse the effects of climate on tree growth.
D.To study the reason for the survival of “Big Tree”.
( )29.What do we know about the two methods mentioned in Paragraph 4
A.Tissue culture is the most frequently used method.
B.There is a chance that the branch will fail to grow roots.
C.In the first method the live tissue is sealed in a container.
D.A mixture of hormones and other chemicals is needed in both methods.
( )30.What does the underlined word “lauded” in Paragraph 5 mean
A.Joined. B.Charged.
C.Praised. D.Contacted.
( )31.What’s Scott Merkle’s attitude to the group’s work
A.Cautious. B.Critical.
C.Approving. D.Unclear.

It is William Shakespeare, the great coiner, who is given credit for the word. Coriolanus, one of his characters, compares going into exile (流放) to a “lonely dragon” retiring to his cave. He was talking about a physical state: someone who was lonely was simply alone. Then, thanks to the Romantic poets, the word took on emotional meanings. Loneliness became a condition of the soul. For William Wordsworth, who famously “wandered lonely as a cloud”, the natural world offered an escape from negative feelings of loneliness—a host of flowers could provide “cheerful company”. Today, loneliness is often seen as a serious public-health problem, creating the feeling of disconnection.
In his book Solitude, Netta Weinstein, a psychology professor wonders the rewards of time spent alone. He begins with an account of stories of solitude created by figures such as Michel de Montaigne, a writer, and Edward Hopper, a ta then draws on laboratory work, interviews and surveys to clarify how being alone really affects the human mind.
It is common to treat loneliness and solitude as synonyms (同义词), but they are not. The author suggests that what is negatively described as one state can be positively expressed as the other. Loneliness, often perceived as negative, can potentially be transformed into a positive experience of solitude. To this end he emphasizes how being alone can help people restore their state and offers practical advice. In a noisy world, he argues, people should make time to be alone, away from attention-grabbing motives.
The book’s interviewees mostly regard a lack of company as a contributor to autonomy. But this depends on whether solitude is desirable or not. Enforced solitude, such as that experienced by prisoners, typically leads to nothing but suffering. Elective solitude, by contrast, affords space for self-reflection. It can open the door to “peak experiences” such as wonder, harmony, and happiness. In a highly-connected digital age, however, many readers do not fancy their chances of ever taking a long enough break to have such experiences.
( )32.How does Paragraph 1 introduce the concept of loneliness
A.By tracing its development.
B.By analysing causes.
C.By making a point to be argued.
D.By sharing a romantic story.
( )33.What does Netta Weinstein’s book Solitude focus on
A.The various terms of solitude.

C.The long-standing history of solitude.
D.The psychological benefits of solitude.
( )ta describes the state of loneliness as .
A.stressful B.essential
C.changeable D.never beneficial
( )35.What does Netta most probably agree with according to the last paragraph
A.Enforced solitude is a matter of choice.
B.Enforced solitude contributes to autonomy.
C.Elective solitude is rare in the digital world.
D.Elective solitude interrupts peak experiences.

Several years ago, I experienced daily severe headaches that made me want to bang my head against a brick wall. I was desperate to find a cure. 36.
In my hopelessness, my father suggested acupuncture (针灸), a treatment he had experienced in Hong Kong. With limited exposure to traditional Chinese medicine, I decided to give acupuncture a try.
With no particular expectations, I found myself in the office of a middle-aged woman, surrounded by Chinese herbal medicines. After explaining my issue, she placed 3 fingers on my wrist to feel my heartbeat. 37. Soon, she took out the needles, which made me somewhat uneasy as such objects typically make me uncomfortable.
38. To deal with my headaches, the treatment began on the back of my hand, far from my head. As the doctor gently handled the needles, I got the feeling that something was flowing throughout my entire body.
The doctor then continued to tap and move more needles across my body. The electricity was turned on, and the doctor left the room. 39. Around the 5-minute mark, the doctor returned and adjusted the electricity level. A moment later, before I knew it, she turned off the electricity and removed the needles, marking an end to the 20-minute process. She then gave me some herbal medicine to take for 5 days.
I returned to the doctor for a total of 10 sessions, and each time the same routine was repeated and the same herbal medicine was given. The true benefits of the acupuncture treatment became clear: I remained free of headaches for 2 years. 40. If you’ve experienced similar conditions, I highly recommend trying it.
A.At last, my efforts paid off.
B.I now strongly advocate acupuncture.
C.I was then guided to a room and told to lie down.
D.Despite trying different solutions, nothing worked.
E.My initial experience with acupuncture was quite surprising.
F.Though it might seem scary, the acupuncture cured my back pain.
G.Lying still, I could sense the electricity flowing throughout my body.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the animal shelter, Sarah walked through the rows of cages until her eyes landed on a small, trembling dog huddled (蜷缩) in the corner. “I think I’ve found the one,” Sarah whispered softly to herself as she looked into the dog’s sad eyes. This timid, abandoned dog had no idea that a journey of transformation with friendly people lay in store for him.
The shelter staff explained that the dog, named Buddy, had a difficult past and was very shy and scared. Sarah extended a hand, offering a soothing tone, “Hey sweetie, you must have a story to tell, but from now on, you’ve got a buddy in me.”
Bringing Buddy home was just the beginning of their journey, which was rocky at first for him. Everything was strange and new, causing him to hide under furniture and be startled at every sound. Therefore, Sarah provided a cozy bed, delicious meals, and most importantly, heaps of love and comfort.
Slowly but surely, he started to emerge from his shell, wagging his tail tentatively and gazing at Sarah with a glimmer of hope in his eyes. Under Sarah’s patient and loving guidance, Buddy flourished, even learning tricks and commands, and forming a deep bond with his new owner.
The journey of healing turned out to be a success. But Sarah had never expected it would bring about another one. One day, while scrolling through social media, Sarah came across a heart-warming story about dogs being trained to assist children with autism (自闭症). Those children had social communication difficulties and had few facial expressions and gestures. Without hesitation, she inquired about the programme and soon, Buddy was enrolled in training to become a certified therapy(治疗) dog. But she was unsure whether Buddy would be comfortable with the new challenge.
Paragraph 1:
Their first day at the therapy centre was filled with uncertainty.
Paragraph 2:
As the weeks progressed, Sarah noticed a remarkable change both in the children and Buddy.
