M: Good that I asked. And when will you check in
W: In about forty minutes. And you don’t have any checked bags, do you
M: No, I don’t. Just carry-ons.
W: Excellent. Otherwise, things would get complicated. Now you can have a seat in the waiting area and read some magazines to kill time.
M: Okay.
Text 10
M: Hello everybody. My name is David Anderson. I’m glad to be invited by the International Student Centre to give you a talk on how to protect yourselves and avoid losses, both on and off campus. First, if you, especially the girls, are in a café or restaurant, make sure that your bag is where you can keep an eye on it. If you want to leave for a while, don’t ask a stranger to take care of it. Just take it with you. Second, if you have to walk home alone late at night, stick to well-lighted areas. If you really think someone is going to hurt you, go to the nearest house and ask for help. If a car stops and asks for information, just keep well clear of the door. Third, if you drive, park in a public car park, or at least in a well-lighted area if it’s at night. Avoid the quiet dark roads, and don’t leave your passport, laptop, or cash in the car. At last, I just want to say that in this country, it is not allowed to carry a knife, or anything that can be used as a weapon, even if it’s for self-defense. Actually, this isn’t a dangerous town if you’re careful enough.

根据第一段中“Fresh baked service!—You can now add games to any picnic experience…”
Includes a 2-hour picnic with set up and clean up.”
根据Family-style Picnic部分“Our family-style picnic experience is perfect for big groups!”, Social Picnic Party部分“Perfect for meeting new friends.”,We Love This Formal Picnic!部分“Looking for something more formal This is special and for you!”和Birthday Party Picnic部分“Besides our signature birthday party cake…” We Love This Formal Picnic!
根据第二段中“Parker revolutionized our understanding of the sun and its effects on Earth and other bodies within the solar system.”以及“NASA even stated that ‘the field of heliophysics exists in large part because of Dr Eugene Parker’.”
根据第三段中“When Parker’s research was published in 1958, his theory was initially met with scepticism(怀疑) and ridicule by the scientific community.”以及“The general view at the time was that the space between planets was an absolute vacuum(真空), and was thus completely empty of any matter.” 故选A。
根据倒数第二段中“That experience likely led to the advice Parker often gave young researchers:‘If you do something new or innovative, expect trouble. But think critically about it because if you’re wrong, you want to be the first one to know that.’”
根据第二段中“Hailed(誉为) as a visionary in the field of heliophysics, Parker revolutionized our understanding of the sun and its effects on Earth and other bodies within the solar system.”以及根据最后一段中“Parker was humble, straightforward, and wise.”
根据第一段“The rapid melting of the ice sheets at the top of Greenland and Antarctica, as measured by satellite-based gravitational measurements, is shifting more mass towards Earth’s waistline. And the extra increase is slowing the planet’s rotation (自转).”(基于卫星的重力测量显示,格陵兰岛和南极洲顶部冰盖的快速融化正在将更多的质量转移到地球的腰围上。额外的质量增加正在减缓地球的自转。)可知,地球两极冰盖的融化导致了地球自转速度的变化。故选B项。
29.B 词义猜测题。根据画线单词后文“Timekeepers have added 27 leap seconds to the clock since the idea was introduced.”(自从这个想法被引入以来,计时员已经在时钟上增加了27个闰秒。)以及第四段“The slightly slower rotation has actually delayed the need for timekeeping changes by a few years—in fact, as a result of this change, the last time a leap second was required to be added was in 2016. At the moment, in fact, Earth’s rotation and atomic clocks are nearly in sync.”(稍微慢一点的自转实际上将调整计时的需要推迟了几年——事实上,由于这种变化,上一次需要增加闰秒是在2016年。
根据最后一段“‘But the study suggests that, thanks to climate change, global timekeepers now have an extra two or three years before they need to adjust,’ notes geophysicist Jerry X. Mitrovica of Harvard University. ‘But no realistic projections of future melting can prevent the unavoidable beyond 2030. One way or another, the world is going to have to start losing time—or international timekeeping rules are due for an update,’ Mitrovica adds.”(哈佛大学的地球物理学家Jerry X. Mitrovica指出:“但是这项研究表明,由于气候变化,全球计时器现在有额外的两三年时间来调整。”“但是,对未来融化的现实预测无法阻止2030年后不可避免的融化。无论如何,世界将不得不开始失去时间——或者国际计时规则也该更新了,”米特罗维察补充道。)可知,地球自转变慢的结果是国际计时规则必须修订。故选D项。
31.C 主旨大意题。根据第一段“The rapid melting of the ice sheets at the top of Greenland and Antarctica, as measured by satellite-based gravitational measurements, is shifting more mass towards Earth’s waistline. And the extra increase is slowing the planet’s rotation (自转). That climate-change-driven mass shift is throwing a new challenge into international timekeeping standards.”
根据第二段“Based on previous findings of various Carnobacterium strains (菌群) growing well at high and low pressures, University of Florida microbiologist Wayne Nicholson and his colleagues systematically examined 14 strains’ responses to a wide span of pressure conditions.”(佛罗里达大学的微生物学家 Wayne Nicholson 和他的同事们基于先前对各种在高、低压力下生长良好的肉杆菌菌株的研究发现,系统地检查了 14 种菌株对广泛压力条件的反应。)
根据第三段“Very few past studies focused on how well microbes tolerate a range of pressures, Nicholson says, but these results are nonetheless surprising given that most other organisms seem to be far more pressure-sensitive.”
根据最后一段“Other bacteria have been shown to do well at comparably high pressures, says Felipe Gómez Gómez, an astrobiologist at the National Institute of Aerospace Technology in Madrid, who was not involved in the study. But these results are novel because they show that the same Carnobacterium strains can endure so much pressure variation. He says:‘What’s really challenging is the whole range.’ These microbes’ ability means they could, for instance, theoretically survive at various depths in an alien ocean, Gómez Gómez adds. ‘This has far-reaching astrobiological implications.’”
根据第一段“New research reveals that Carnobacterium, a genus often associated with spoiled meat, can successfully divide and reproduce across an enormous range of external pressures—from the equivalent of a very thin atmosphere to crushing ocean depths. This adaptability is unknown for any other life forms on Earth, researchers report in Astrobiology.”(新的研究表明,通常与腐肉有关的肉杆菌属可以在巨大范围的外部压力下成功分裂和繁殖——从相当于非常薄的大气层到高压的海洋深处。 ,最后一段“These microbes’ ability means they could, for instance, theoretically survive at various depths in an alien ocean, Gómez Gómez adds. ‘This has far-reaching astrobiological implications.’”(这些微生物的能力意味着它们理论上可以在外星海洋的不同深度生存,Gómez Gómez 补充说。“这具有深远的天体生物学意义。”)及全文可知,文章主要讲述了肉杆菌属可以在巨大范围的外部压力下成功分裂和繁殖,这种适应性在地球上的任何其他生命形式中都是未知的。故选 B。

One possible version:
A visit to the Achievement Expo of China Aerospace
Today’s trip to the City Museum is really a memorable experience and this will be graved in my mind forever.
All Senior 3 students visited an exhibition themed on “Achievements of China Aerospace”. First, we attended informative lectures and watched extremely exciting videos of rocket launching, which helped us to get deeper insights into China aerospace. Then came the highlight, experiencing thrilling and funny spacewalks in almost zero gravity.
Amazed by the outstanding achievements and touched by the spirit of China aerospace experts, I was soon lost in deep thought. I have made up my mind to apply myself to study so that I can make contributions to our country like them one day.
One possible version:
Sarah decided to help Mrs Wilson out. Every Saturday, as Sarah saw Mrs Wilson(时间状语从句), she would treat Mrs Wilson to her desserts generously and chat with Mrs Wilson in order to comfort the elderly woman and make Mrs Wilson feel she was cared about(宾语从句). Influenced by Sarah’s kindness(过去分词作状语),Mrs Wilson gradually worked through her sorrow. While enjoying Sarah’s desserts(时间状语从句的省略结构), Mrs Wilson shared her baking stories and valuable baking experience without reservation with Sarah and offered her tips on opening a bakery after knowing Sarah’s dream.
Over time, their unlikely friendship became noticed in the park. Sarah’s small table was not merely a place to buy desserts; it turned into a symbol of caring for the elderly. Mrs Wilson, once a lonely woman, found herself being surrounded by a group of new friends(find+宾语+宾补), whose company helped her get out of loneliness(定语从句). Assisted by Mrs Wilson(过去分词作状语), the small table has grown into a shop. Sarah’s bakery has been on the up and up with a constant stream of visitors, who are attracted by both the lovely smell and the moving story(定语从句).

Eugene Newman Parker, a leading figure in heliospheric(日球层的) physics for the past half century, passed away peacefully at his home in Chicago on Mar.15. He was 94.
Hailed(誉为) as a visionary in the field of heliophysics, Parker revolutionized our understanding of the sun and its effects on Earth and other bodies within the solar system. NASA even stated that “the field of heliophysics exists in large part because of Dr Eugene Parker”. In 2018, Parker became the first living scientist to witness the launch of a spacecraft that was named in his honour.
Parker is best known for his groundbreaking theory on the existence of a phenomenon called “solar wind”, a continuous stream of charged particles that flow off the sun. It can become violent, causing space weather that impacts the Earth. When Parker’s research was published in 1958, his theory was initially met with scepticism(怀疑) and ridicule by the scientific community. The general view at the time was that the space between planets was an absolute vacuum(真空), and was thus completely empty of any matter. But, there were no errors in his study or his calculations, and the theory was later proven to be correct in 1962, when a NASA spacecraft mission to Venus revealed the constant presence of a supersonic wind—exactly as Parker had predicted.
That experience likely led to the advice Parker often gave young researchers:“If you do something new or innovative, expect trouble. But think critically about it because if you’re wrong, you want to be the first one to know that.” Parker never co-authored a paper with his students, thus urging them to be independent.
Parker was humble, straightforward, and wise. His son Eric said, “My sister Joyce and I didn’t get a real feel for what a ‘big dog’ our dad was in the field.” They got an even better sense when a month after Parker’s death, they travelled to Lund, Sweden, to accept on his behalf the Crafoord Prize in Astronomy.

( )25.Why did people view Parker’s theory of “solar wind” sceptically at first
A.It went against the popular opinion at that time.
B.Some mistakes were found in his calculations.
C.The presence of a supersonic wind was proven by NASA.
D.Matter was believed to exist in the space between planets.
( )26.What did Parker suggest young researchers do
A.Seek close cooperation.
B.Avoid high expectations.
C.Learn by trial and error.
D.Compete against others.
( )27.What words can be used to describe Parker according to the passage
A.Straightforward and generous.
B.Responsible and accessible.
C.Intelligent yet conservative.
D.Distinguished yet modest.

The rapid melting of the ice sheets at the top of Greenland and Antarctica, as measured by satellite-based gravitational measurements, is shifting more mass towards Earth’s waistline. And the extra increase is slowing the planet’s rotation (自转). That climate-change-driven mass shift is throwing a new challenge into international timekeeping standards.
The internationally agreed-upon coordinated (协调) universal time, or UTC, is set by atomic clocks, but that time is regularly adjusted to match Earth’s actual rotation. Earth’s rotation isn’t always smooth sailing—the speed of the planet’s spin changes depending on a variety of factors, including gravitational drag from the sun and the moon, changes to the rotation speed of Earth’s core, friction (摩擦) between ocean waters and the seafloor, and shifts in the planet’s distribution of mass around its surface. But the impact of the quake is much smaller than that of the ice sheets’ melting. Humankind has done something that affects, measurably, the rotation rate of the entire Earth.
The need for occasional tweaks to the synchronization (同步) of atomic clocks and Earth’s rotation gave birth to the “leap second” in 1972, an extra tick that international timekeepers agreed to add to UTC as needed. Timekeepers have added 27 leap seconds to the clock since the idea was introduced.
The slightly slower rotation has actually delayed the need for timekeeping changes by a few years—in fact, as a result of this change, the last time a leap second was required to be added was in 2016. At the moment, in fact, Earth’s rotation and atomic clocks are nearly in sync.
“But the study suggests that, thanks to climate change, global timekeepers now have an extra two or three years before they need to adjust,” notes geophysicist Jerry X. Mitrovica of Harvard University. “But no realistic projections of future melting can prevent the unavoidable beyond 2030. One way or another, the world is going to have to start losing time—or international timekeeping rules are due for an update,” Mitrovica adds.
( )28.What is causing the change in Earth’s rotation speed
A.Friction between ocean and land.
B.Melting of ice sheets at Earth’s poles.

D.Direction of spin of Earth’s core.
( )29.What does the underlined word “tweaks” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Investigations. B.Adjustments.
C.Objections. D.Applications.
( )30.What is a result of slower rotation of Earth
A.International timekeeping study will disappear.
B.“Leap second” will be put into use more frequently.
C.Wider gaps will arise between UTC and atomic clocks.
D.International timekeeping rules will have to be revised.
( )31.Which can be the best title for the text
A.Atomic clocks matter in global timekeeping
B.Earth’s rotation affects the accuracy of time
C.Climate change is affecting how we keep time
D.Earth’s slower rotation worsens climate change

When it comes to thriving under pressure, microbes (微生物) have us solidly beat. New research reveals that Carnobacterium, a genus often associated with spoiled meat, can successfully divide and reproduce across an enormous range of external pressures—from the equivalent of a very thin atmosphere to crushing ocean depths. This adaptability is unknown for any other life forms on Earth, researchers report in Astrobiology. Such hardiness suggests a single organism could survive in totally different environments throughout the solar system.
Based on previous findings of various Carnobacterium strains (菌群) growing well at high and low pressures, University of Florida microbiologist Wayne Nicholson and his colleagues systematically examined 14 strains’ responses to a wide span of pressure conditions. The team focused on strains isolated not only from meat (including seafood, chicken, etc.) but also from Siberian permafrost, an Antarctic lake and deep within the North Pacific’s Aleutian Trench.
In the laboratory, Nicholson and his team exposed each strain to pressures ranging from 0.01 to 100 times Earth’s atmospheric pressure at sea level—corresponding to the pressures on the surface of Mars and inside the liquid water ocean of Jupiter’s moon Europa, respectively. The researchers found that 11 strains grew measurably at every pressure tested. Very few past studies focused on how well microbes tolerate a range of pressures, Nicholson says, but these results are nonetheless surprising given that most other organisms seem to be far more pressure-sensitive. “Humans have trouble breathing on Mount Qomolangma,” he notes, “and that’s about 30 percent of sea-level atmospheric pressure.”
Other bacteria have been shown to do well at comparably high pressures, says Felipe Gómez Gómez, an astrobiologist at the National Institute of Aerospace Technology in Madrid, who was not involved in the study. But these results are novel because they show that the same Carnobacterium strains can endure so much pressure variation. He says:“What’s really challenging is the whole range.” These microbes’ ability means they could, for instance, theoretically survive at various depths in an alien ocean, Gómez Gómez adds. “This has far-reaching astrobiological implications.”
( )32.How did Wayne Nicholson and his colleagues carry out their research
A.Doing a survey. B.Listing examples.
C.Making a model. D.Doing tests.
( )33.What can we learn from Paragraph 3
A.The results were not surprising at all.
B.Researchers found that many strains could change during pressures.
C.Researchers hardly knew the organism’s toleration on pressure in old days.
D.The research showed why man can’t take a breath smoothly on Mount Qomolangma.
( )34.What’s Felipe Gómez Gómez’s attitude towards the research
A.Objective. B.Positive.
C.Indifferent. D.Critical.
( )35.Which of the following is most probably the main idea
A.Bacteria can survive at different depths.
B.Microbes withstand the solar system’s pressure.
C.All life forms’ adaptations in pressure are proved.
D.Carnobacterium strains have thrived at great pressures.

Almost a decade ago, the education system was rigid (僵化的) and not very tolerant of the needs of students. Not every student is able to grasp things at the same level or pace. Yet, they were bound to that system. 36. A personalized learning experience has finally taken over. Educators and institutes are installing personalized learning software into the education system. The goal is to analyse the skill sets of each student and enhance them through digital media. These platforms use visuals, AI, case studies, etc. 37.
Personalized learning helps reduce the pressure of keeping up with everyone else and promotes the idea of learning at your own pace. Personalized education makes personal growth the first priority. 38. Learning is individualistic, and if the students are not confident in their own knowledge, competing with other students can feel challenging.
39. It gives them a sense of responsibility, which drives them to learn on their own. Personalized learning also includes integrated learning, which gives students a chance to explore more knowledge independently and raise questions, as well as have discussions in classrooms or with their teachers face to face.
Personalized learning platforms have tests and exams that students can take at their leisure to judge their performance. They get a detailed analysis of their performances, which gives them an insight into their strengths and weaknesses. They can always learn, relearn, and revise when they want to. 40. It not only makes the students more productive, but it also helps improve their mental and physical health as they have more peace of mind.
A.But now, it has changed.
B.And their academic performance suffered.
C.Personalized learning includes discussion among students.
D.They give students the chance to explore different learning sources.
E.This helps them keep track of their progress and not rush into things.
F.Students compete with themselves first and then gradually with others.
G.Personalized learning includes many study materials and tests students can use independently.

Sarah, a high school student, had a great passion for baking. With her parents’ support, Sarah dreamed of opening her own bakery, a place where she could turn her interest into a business. However, she knew the importance of improving her skills and gaining real-world experience.
Therefore, every Saturday, without fail, she would set up a small but charming table at a local park. The park, filled with families and laughter, was the perfect place for Sarah to sell her creations. Her table, neatly laid out with colourful home-made cookies and cakes, attracted passers-by with the desserts’ smell.
On a particularly bright and sunny afternoon, as Sarah was carefully arranging her chocolate cookies and cakes, her attention was drawn to an elderly woman sitting alone on a bench. The woman, with her silver hair and sad eyes, seemed lost in thought. As the hours went by, Sarah noticed that the woman remained where she was, seemingly forgotten by the world. A sense of concern washed over Sarah. So she decided to act. She poured a cup of warm tea carefully and cut a generous slice of her rich chocolate cake, a crowd favourite, and approached the woman.
“I thought you might like some snacks,” Sarah said with a warm, inviting smile. The woman’s face lit up as she accepted the treat. “Thank you, dear. I haven’t had such a delicious treat since my retirement,” she responded, her voice soft yet filled with gratitude. As she enjoyed the cake, tears rolled down her face.
A little shocked, Sarah asked what had happened. The woman introduced herself as Mrs Wilson, who had been a baker before she retired. Since losing her husband to cancer a week ago, she had been living alone. Her visits to the park were her escape from the loneliness that filled her quiet home. Sarah listened attentively, her heart touched by the woman’s story.
Paragraph 1:
Sarah decided to help Mrs Wilson out.
Paragraph 2:
Over time, their unlikely friendship became noticed in the park.
