Pamela Malhotra has always attached great importance to education. However, life always seemed to “get in the way” every time she tried to finish her bachelor's degree. The single mom was so devoted to working to support her two children that she repeatedly put her own education goals on hold, giving up her college program on two separate occasions over the years.
When he was just five years old, her son Bonifacio Malhotra noticed her struggling to get her degree, and he made a promise to help her. “I remember I just told my mom … one day, it's gonna be you and me,” Bonifacio said. “We're going to gain our degrees at the same time.” Those words proved to be prophetic for the mom and son duo, who currently walked across the stage at the university to collect their bachelor's degrees together!
“That promise, he never allowed it to die,” said Pamela. “He continuously confirmed that we're gonna do this.” Their path to graduation wasn't easy, but Bonifacio stayed true to his promise and helped his mother along the way. The two held two associate degrees each, so in the fall of 2021 they registered together in bachelor level online courses. They both found the classes challenging, but Bonifacio stepped up as the cheerleader his mother needed. “Mom, you've got to keep it going. I know you want to stop. We must keep going,” Bonifacio recalled. “The main thing was just trying to get everything lined up and stay on top of all the work.”
It took the Malhotras two years to finish their bachelor's degrees, Pamela's in humanities and Bonifacio's in public safety administration. Pamela plans to stay at her job as a coordinator, and Bonifacio has accepted a job at university to help other students succeed in college, too.
Pamela said she was incredibly proud of her son's achievement, and she personally couldn't have reached her lifelong goal without the support of her family, especially him. “Between my son and my daughter, they were my greatest supporter,” Pamela proudly said.
( ) 4. What does the underlined word “prophetic” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Professional. B. Particular. C. Precious. D. Predictable.
( ) 5. What do we know about the Malhotras
A. They took online courses at the same time.
B. Pamela thought the courses were more challenging.
C. Bonifacio majored in humanities at university.
D. Pamela now works as a university teacher.
( ) 6. Which of the following statement can best describe Bonifacio
A. He's the good man of the house. B. He's a man of all work.
C. He's a man among men. D. He's a man of his word.
( ) 7. What can be the best title of the passage
A. We value the time being with families
B. Families help each other
C. The home is our heaven
D. Each family has its own problems
C
Daily life has its satisfactions. The perfect reply to a friend's text message. The first after work drink. The sound of another government U turn. But do any really compare to the joy of going to sleep That moment when all the mess disappears into the embrace of a mattress(床垫)
Somehow we have pushed this pleasure to the back of the queue. A third of American adults report sleeping less than the recommended seven hours. Many of us feel a lack of rest.
Stressing ourselves out about a lack of sleep can make the problem worse. In his book Overcoming Insomnia and Sleep Problems, Oxford professor Colin Espie writes about “orthosomnia(完美睡眠症)”, where people are so focused on sleeping well that they become too anxious to do so. The marketing of sleeping aids adds to this.
Espie says we each have a sleep pattern that, like a shoe size, we figure out through trial and error. The research on bedtime between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. will cheer those who leave parties early and give up late night football highlights, but it establishes no causal link. Genetically, some humans are larks(百灵鸟) and some are owls(猫头鹰); the larks may just have better cardiovascular(心血管的) health. For an owl to try to fight their natural schedule, and sleep earlier, wouldn't necessarily help.
Once we weren't urged to sleep until we were dead. Now we are told to sleep or we'll be dead. Taking our biology seriously suggests that Netflix should not try to compete with sleep, and the city that never sleeps is not as cool as it sounds. But nowadays sleep is becoming something that people try to excel at. About that I'm unconvinced. A good night's sleep is a pleasure. As far as possible, it should also remain a simple one.
( ) 8. What can satisfy us most in our daily life according to the passage
A. The perfect reply to a friend's text message.
B. The first after work drink.
C. The sound of another government U turn.
D. The joy of going to sleep.
( ) 9. What may lead to people suffering from the lack of sleep according to Colin Espie
A. They often leave parties early.
B. They seldom stay up late for the football highlights.
C. They are too concerned about having a good sleep.
D. They have a habit to follow their natural schedule.
( )10. How does Colin Espie explain a sleep pattern
A. By statistics. B. By example. C. By comparison. D. By process.
( )11. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. It is better to sleep like an owl.
B. Netflix may affect our sleep.
C. We expect the city to be sleepless nowadays.
D. The author tries to be good at sleep.

Have you ever left a movie theater with a mixed feeling about what you just watched No Well, you definitely haven't seen the movie Nope(《不》). This 2022 movie is a sci fi horror one. But despite having the amazing director Jordan Peele and the wonderful actors, this movie still manages to be the worst I've ever seen.
In the movie Nope, it shows us a western 1998 setting where we follow a brother, OJ, and a sister, Emerald Haywood. Emerald is a fun and entertaining woman, while OJ is shy but outspoken when necessary. They run a large horse farm. They observe something mysterious in the sky, which they later learn is a UFO. This UFO is eating people who are watching horse races. To help their horse farm, they try their best to beat the monster.
Daniel Kaluuya is a good actor and has experience playing in horror movies. In the movie, he did a good job at playing the role of OJ until he took a turn for the worse, going from a shy person to a hero who leads his group to success without any visible(可见的) growth. That makes his character challenging for the audience to understand. I love Keke Palmer's humor and energy in the movie, but it gets to a point where she is too active, which makes her character Emerald unpleasant.
Many scenes in the movie are extended not to create suspense(悬念) but simply to add screen time. That makes the two hours feel like four. There are many storylines that end as quickly as they begin, with seemingly no point. The movie is a far cry from horror and suspense. It is just an alien story with some seeming scares in between. Jordan Peele tried to make the movie symbolic, which made him blind to the idea that movies are supposed to be entertaining to watch. This movie is not for you if you are a true suspense and horror fan. If you ask me whether you should watch it or not, I'd say “Nope”.
( )12. What do you know about the movie
A. It is a western movie. B. It is the worst movie.
C. It is set in ancient times. D. It is popular with horror fans.
( )13. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The response of the audience. B. The suggestion on the acting.
C. The comparison of the actors. D. The opinion on the characters.
( )14. What is the main reason for the movie's failure according to Paragraph 4
A. The long period. B. The wrong director.
C. The worthless plots. D. The old fashioned theme.
( )15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Nope is a nope for me B. What an entertaining movie!
C. Jordan Peele's new movie D. Should a horror movie be horrible

Four Tips for Using Less Plastic(塑料)
As we all know, the world has a plastic problem—and it is increasing. Scientists are working to find a long term solution by making plastic more biodegradable(可生物降解的). __16__
Quit using plastic bags. __17__ People use a trillion plastic bags worldwide every year. About 10 per cent are used in the United States alone. That's almost one bag per American per day. In contrast, the average Danish uses four single use bags per year. Today, other countries (such as Germany and New Zealand) either make customers pay for plastic bags or have stopped using them completely.
__18__ Today, around 8.3 billion plastic straws(吸管) pollute the world's beaches. So when you order a drink, say no to the straw, or bring your own reusable one. In 2018, Seattle became the first major U.S. city to ban plastic straws, and many other cities are set to follow its example.
Don't use plastic bottles. Buy a reusable bottle and fill it with any type of drink you like. Some cities, like Bundanoon in Australia and San Francisco in the U.S., have completely or partially(部分地) started quitting bottled water. __19__
Avoid plastic packaging. Buy bar soap instead of liquid soap in plastic containers. Don't buy fruit or vegetables in plastic packaging. __20__ They also want to tax plastic take out containers.
A. Don't use plastic straws.
B. Don't pollute the beaches.
C. Instead, take your own reusable shopping bag to the store.
D. Therefore, pollution has been largely decreased across the world.
E. In the U.K., leaders are calling for supermarkets to have plastic free areas.
F. Globally, however, people still buy nearly a million plastic bottles every minute.
G. But in the meantime, here are four things you can do to reduce plastic waste now.

(2023南通如皋期末)Walk into any bookstore, and you can hardly avoid “bumping into” Charles Dickens. Many of Dickens' works still sell well today. And they are __21__ on outstanding shelves.
As someone who teaches Dickens, the question of why we still read him is often in my mind __22__. Then a hand __24__. “But why should we still read this __25__?” the student asked. The answer I gave was only __26__. “Because he teaches you how to think,” I said.
The question was on my __27__ for years and years. I told myself answers, but never with complete __28__. We read Dickens because he is not just a man of his own times, but also a man for our times. We read Dickens because we can learn from the experiences of his __29__ almost as easily as we can learn from our own experiences.
These are all wonderful reasons to read Dickens. But these are not __30__ the reasons why I read Dickens. My search for an answer __31__ until one day a text message came from a student of mine. “We still read Dickens' novels,” she wrote, “because they tell us why we are what we are.” __32__ as it was, that's the explanation I had __33__ for years.
Dickens shines a __34__ on who we are during the best of times and worst of times. That's why we still need to read him today. If you have time, go to __35__ one of his many novels, read it and enjoy what it has to tell you about yourself.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Word spread that Derek Rodgers, who had Down syndrome(唐氏综合征), wanted to attend the Homecoming Dance(返校日舞会).
I, a new journalist for the Campus News, was curious who would be his dance partner and decided to cover his story. When I accompanied him on the way home one day, we were approached by Kelsey Stuart, a popular student.
“Derek, I'd like to ask you to the Dance,” she smiled.
Derek was shocked. He couldn't believe that one of the prettiest girls in school was asking him.
Derek's face went red. “Why me?” he asked. “And shouldn't boys be the ones to do the asking?”
“I doubt if you would, after all the rough experiences you've had. And we actually have more in common than you think. We both really want to go to the Dance. And we are not like those who are only concerned about personal appearance.”
“But what do you see in me How can I be the sort of guy you want to go with?”
“I know you are a gentleman and that you'll treat me like a lady and that I'll feel safe with you,” she said, leaving with a smile.
The entire school went crazy when they learned that Kelsey was Derek's dance partner.
At first there were words that were not so nice about them. Their classmate, Billy, made fun of them by giving them stupid names. Betty, Kelsey's best friend, stopped hanging out with her because she couldn't understand her choice at all.
Despite the words around, every day after school, the two still stayed behind to practice their dance routine. Kelsey patiently taught Derek how to lead the steps, move to the beat of the music and spin(旋转) with elegance. Slowly but surely, they improved their dancing together.
The day of the Dance arrived. Kelsey got into a new dress and Derek put on a well cut suit.

第一节 One possible version:
Dear_David,
Sorry to hear that you are rather anxious because a lot of people around you catch colds and have high fevers. Take it easy. I'm writing to offer you some suggestions.
Firstly, always look on the bright side, which can ensure you more confidence in dealing with it. Secondly, working out can help you reduce stress and get over negative feelings. It has been proven that active people tend to have better immune systems. Thirdly, always wear a mask when going out and remember to wash your hands regularly.
I hope my suggestions will be helpful and everything will turn out all right.
Yours,
Li_Hua
第二节 One possible version:
_Finally,_the_two_getting_ready,_the_Dance_began. When Kelsey, holding Derek's arm, entered the room, time almost stopped. Everyone looked in their direction, amazed at the perfection of the couple. As the soft music started up, Derek led Kelsey to the center, his steps steady and fluent, his movement gentle and elegant. Kelsey couldn't hold back her smile as she enjoyed the moment, and Derek, immersed in the dance, was joyous and proud. With a stunning spin, they finished their dance successfully.
After_the_Dance,_students_gathered_around_Kelsey_and_Derek. Billy, his face blushing, came over to apologize. “I was wrong to make all those names,” he said with regret in his eyes. “You two looked great.” Betty approached Kelsey, her head down. “Sorry,” she murmured. “Are we still friends?” Getting a yes, she even asked how Kelsey taught Derek all those moves. Surrounded by cheers, applause and praise, Kelsey knew she had made the best choice ever, because she chose to see the beauty beyond appearance.
