Jordan Mittler has been spending weekends teaching seniors in New York how to use technology for years, but he never expected he would be streaming(直播) a class about smartphones and computers on smartphones and computers.
The Manhattan resident has patiently taught texting, emailing and video chatting to dozens of seniors for years, beginning when his grandparents first got smartphones. Teaching them how to use apps and send messages inspired the tech savvy(懂科技知识的) teen to offer his services to more older people. At the age of 12, he created a formal course and started hosting free, hour long sessions for seniors every Sunday. Immediately, he was flooded with interested participants. His course, spread out over 10 weeks, was an instant success.
But when the pandemic hit New York City, Jordan had to end his classes. He wasn't sure if he could move the lessons online—it was much easier to help students understand their devices in person—but he knew the importance of keeping older folks connected online. Most of the attendees were retired or lived alone and needed to find ways to connect with family members remotely. “It gives them somewhere to be and something to do,” he said.
So he spent a week ensuring each student could use Zoom, an online video chat platform. For most of the seniors, that meant calling them individually with step to step instructions. Since then, online classes have been going smoothly.
His project, Mittler Senior Technology, has taught Jordan the value of making inter generational relationships. He frequently invites his teenage friends to participate in his classes, hoping more young people will take time to help older relatives or neighbors.
“Any kid in our generation can show their grandparents how to send an email,” he said. “It's very important to spend as much time with them as you can.” For family members trying to help older relatives surf the Internet, Jordan has some advice. He suggests starting with basic applications, like email or texting. From there, it's easier to learn how to navigate more complex apps and websites. “Patience is really key,” he said.
( ) 4. What inspired Jordan Mittler to teach seniors how to use technology

B. Young people are trying to teach older relatives complex applications.
C. Seniors consider it easy to learn more complex apps and websites.
D. Young people tend to be impatient when helping older relatives with technology.

Exposure(暴露) to more light during the day and less light at night is important for healthy sleep because it helps to keep the right body clock, the study team writes in Sleep Health. The results suggest that in the office environment, being exposed either to daylight or electric lights may be important for the health of workers. “Many office buildings may actually be moving in the direction of reducing light,” said Figueiro. “Much has been done to reduce light levels to promote energy efficiency, which is important, but we may be going too far in this direction.” She added, “We need to start thinking about how we light our daytime environment.”
To see whether office workers get enough light to improve their sleep wake cycle, the study team found participants in five government office buildings across the country. A total of 109 people working at the offices wore something that could measure light for one week in summertime, and 81 of these participants repeated the experiment(实验) in winter as well. The office workers wrote down their sleep and wake time and completed a form of questions about their mood and sleep quality at the end of each study period.
Researchers found that people exposed to greater amounts of light during the morning hours, between 8 a.m. and noon, fell asleep more quickly at night compared to those exposed to low light in the morning. People getting more morning light were also less likely to report feelings of stress. Office workers exposed to high levels of light all day, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., also reported lower levels of sleep disorders.
A lack of good quality sleep has been connected with mental and physical health problems, including those with mood, thinking and the immune system. There are many easy things we can do during the day to increase our exposure to sunlight that could have beneficial effects on mood and sleep, such as looking out of the window, seeking light during the day, especially during the morning, and going out during lunch time.
( ) 8. What is Figueiro's attitude towards light reduction
A. Worried. B. Scared.
C. Excited. D. Interested.
( ) 9. How did the researchers draw the conclusion
A. By changing workers' sleep wake cycle.
B. By doing experiments in different seasons.
C. By collecting some questions from workers.
D. By designing a new light measuring method.
( )10. Which of the following statements might the researchers agree with
A. People getting more morning light get tired easily.
B. People getting more morning light feel less stressed.
C. People exposed to less night light wake up quickly.
D. People exposed to less night light have sleep disorders.
( )11. What is the main idea of the text
A. Many office buildings are reducing light.
B. Many office workers lack good quality sleep.
C. People's sleep wake cycle is important for health.
D. Enough daylight is of great benefit to office workers.

With some 50 million copies in print, Johanna Spyri's Heidi is probably the biggest Swiss bestseller of all time. So it's not a surprise there have been many film adaptations. The latest one, directed by Alain Gsponer, is a live action, German language feature that's simply titled Heidi as well.
Heidi's impressive box office numbers prove that the world was ready for yet another version of this old fashioned tale. The feature made over $15.5 million in Germany and Switzerland alone. Even more impressive are the numbers in Italy and France (not generally areas where German language children's films stand any chance).
Gsponer's film follows the basic structure of the novel in 1881. 5 year old Heidi is shipped off by her aunt, Dete, to her don't waste any words grandfather, who lives alone in a small wooden house high up in the Swiss Alps. He is not pleased to see his routine in the peaceful mountain air messed up by a curious little girl who needs looking after. The film doesn't lay stress on the point, but even for those who haven't read the book, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the lovely little girl will soon manage to melt Granddad's icy heart.
At age 8, Heidi is taken away to Frankfurt, where her aunt has found her a rich family as a companion(伙伴) to a wheelchair bound child, Klara. As in the novel, the film plays Heidi's initial fish out of the water situation for comedy, since, as a country girl, she has no idea about things as basic as clean clothes or table manners. Actually, in the midsection, the girls' strict governess(女家庭教师) gets some of the biggest laughs.
This is also a plot necessity. Heidi will need to start to feel homesick. She misses not only Grandpa but also her cute goat herder friend, Peter. She does get to see them again.
Throughout the movie, Gsponer keeps contrasting(对比) different elements, including the seasons, the city and the country and even characters, such as the dark haired and earthy Heidi and the fair skinned and fair haired city girl Klara. These natural contrasts help give a sense of agreement to a plot.
( )12. What does the author want to show by mentioning the box office numbers
A. Gsponer's Heidi is a big success.
B. A lot of people understand German.
C. It is a great idea to adapt a novel.
D. Heidi's story is too old to be popular.
( )13. Why is Heidi's grandpa unhappy about her arrival
A. Heidi needs a house. B. He is not wealthy.
C. Heidi behaves badly. D. He prefers to live alone.
( )14. Which best describes Heidi's initial life in the rich family according to Paragraph 4
A. She fits in well. B. She feels out of place.
C. She feels lonely. D. She laughs at the governess.
( )15. What is the text
A. A short story. B. An introduction to a book.
C. A film review. D. A script of a documentary.

第二节(满分25分)

One particular Thanksgiving, the weather was so beautiful that Mom decided to have dinner on our front lawn. Dad built a long table, and Mom and I rounded up every chair in the house. I did the place settings and made the centerpiece—my favorite job of the year.
My aunt arrived with Uncle Gordon. I watched him walk from the street up the lawn, tall with his blond hair shining in the sun. Another car had pulled up behind them, and Uncle Gordon waited for a slim man to join him. As they walked, he and Gordon chatted. Mom came out of the house and greeted my aunt. Then, with a surprised look, she said hello to Gordon and his friend.
“Who's this?”
Gordon smiled and told us the man's name. “A Canuck(法裔加拿大人) from Toronto, like me.”
“Oh,” Mom said uncertainly. “Well, welcome. Leslie, get another place setting and a chair.” She turned to the stranger. “Please have a seat. We're going to eat in about half an hour.” I thought the man looked a little funny, but he smiled. “Why, thanks. Thanks a lot.” I did as Mom asked and set a place at the table for the stranger. I put him next to Uncle Gordon so the two friends could recall home. And they did a lot of talking.
After dinner, the man approached my mother with a smile. “Thank you for including me in your Thanksgiving dinner, Joyce. It wasn't something I was expecting.” Mom frowned, a little confused. “Of course,” she said. “We're glad you could be here. Do you have Thanksgiving in Canada?”
“Ours is in October. We have turkey, though, just like you.” He smiled. “But this is one of the best Thanksgivings I've had. I guess Americans and Canadians aren't that different, eh?” Then again, he said, “But I never expected this.”
“Gordon's friend seems nice,” Mom said to my aunt when we were alone in the kitchen.

第二节 One possible version:
“Gordon's_friend?”my_aunt_said._“He's_not_Gordon's_friend._We_don't_know_him.” My aunt's words surprised my mom into silence for several moments. “So … we've been treating a total stranger to dinner this entire evening! What if …” As Mom strived to shake off all the crazy ideas going on in her mind, my aunt beckoned Uncle Gordon into the kitchen with a wave. Upon hearing the news, Uncle Gordon's eyebrows jerked up in surprise. “Well, at least he acted nicely and gently. You know what Probably we should just go ask him,” my aunt proposed.
“I_was,_actually,_lost_in_the_neighborhood,”replied_the_stranger. When asked why he had come to our house, the stranger was quite honest. He described how hospitable we were when he came in, and how excited Mom was to introduce her cooking recipes. “It was such a wonderful gathering that I almost forgot my initial intention,” he continued, embarrassed. We burst into laughter and told him to ease off. Seeing him off in the right direction, I couldn't help but think that the best way to celebrate Thanksgiving would always be to give regardless.
