For children in parts of Kenya, books often arrive on the back of a camel. In other parts of the world, they arrive on horses, boats and motor vehicles. Books are hard to come by in some parts of the world. That makes mobile libraries an excellent way to share knowledge and the joy of reading.
The Camel Mobile Library
In Kenya's northeastern region, the Camel Mobile Library takes books to remote villages. The government created the program to give children a chance to learn to read. The animals, which carry 400 books at a time, travel four days a week.
Il Bibliomotocarro
Retired school teacher Antonio La Cava wanted to help children learn to love reading. With that in mind, he turned his three wheeled van(小货车) into a traveling library. His Bibliomotocarro holds 700 books. Each month he travels over 480 kilometers to visit excited children in southern Italy's smallest villages.
CLI Book Boats
Community Learning International(CLI) sponsors a floating library in Laos. The boats, which visit out of the way villages along the Mekong River, carry more than 1,000 books. When the boat arrives, the children rush to the floating library. They choose their books and read well into the night, returning their books in the morning. The boat then moves on to its next stop.
Horse Powered Literacy
In remote parts of Ethiopia, a teacher and a horse, carrying books, pencils and exercise books, travel from village to village. Upon their arrival, the teacher gives books to the children and reads aloud to them. During those few short hours, the children are introduced to the power of reading.

Hummingbirds(蜂鸟) are a very important part of Mexico's ecosystem, but because of the ever spreading city landscape, they face all sorts of serious dangers. That's where 73 year old Catia Lattouf de Arída comes in. As a self taught hummingbird caretaker, she devotes most of her free time and resources to nursing the tiny birds back to health. Her home in Mexico City has become known as a hummingbird hospital.
Catia's story as a hummingbird nurse began in 2011, at a very difficult moment in her life. At that time, she focused on her battle with cancer and fell into a depression(抑郁). She was walking on the street one day when she noticed a hummingbird that had suffered a serious eye injury. The kind hearted woman took it home and named it Gucci. She managed to nurse Gucci back to health, but she said it was Gucci that saved her. Why Because the hummingbird managed to pull her out of the sadness and loneliness that had taken over her life.
Word of her success spread among Catia's friends, and before long some of them began bringing her injured hummingbirds. She didn't repulse them at all. She began to study the bird and their habits in order to better take care of them, and after 11 years of experience, the 73 year old woman is considered an expert on hummingbirds.
In order to raise awareness of the difficult situation of hummingbirds in Mexico, Catia Lattouf de Arída started posting videos of the patients in her Mexico City apartment on social media, and many of them became popular. That's when the need for her nursing services really blew up. She has cared for hundreds of hummingbirds in her 11 year career, when she has had as many as 50 of them in her apartment at any one time. She spends pretty much all her time looking after the tiny birds.

Coral reefs(珊瑚礁) as underwater walls can help reduce the effects of hurricanes on coastal communities. This seems unbelievable. It is reported that scientists have discovered that coral reefs are even more effective than man made sea walls under the water. However, coral reefs are especially easy to be influenced by climate change. Overfishing and pollution have also proved very dangerous to them. Since 1950, half of the world's coral reefs have already been lost. To protect our communities and keep sea ecosystems alive, we need to protect coral reefs right away.
Let's take a closer look at how coral reefs protect us from floods, and how scientists are restoring(修复) reefs.
The roles that coral reefs play as underwater walls have long been recorded by scientists. During a Category 3 hurricane in 2015 in Australia, the coral reefs effectively protected the eastern shoreline from flooding. In contrast, the western coasts without coral reefs suffered serious damage. The researchers observed that the shape of coral reefs can break the approaching waves. More recently, researchers at the University of Miami have reached the same conclusion. They used a special lab simulator to recreate ocean conditions during a Category 5 hurricane. They found that coral reefs could reduce the impact of waves by up to 95 per cent!
Because of higher ocean acidity(酸性) and temperature, coral reefs are disappearing and dying out. At the same time, climate change puts weakened coral reefs under more stress. The University of Miami researchers are testing to plant new coral reefs while others are actively looking for effective methods to reduce the acidity of sea water. The governments have also paid more attention to these actions and provided enough money for reef restoration. With these efforts, we may address climate threats to coral reefs and they can carry on protecting our communities.
( )8. What can we know about coral reefs
A. They can reduce hurricanes.
B. They are faced with danger now.
C. They can't effectively prevent floods.
D. They aren't influenced by overfishing.
( )9. Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 3
A. A terrible hurricane attacked Australia in 2015.
B. Scientists paid little attention to coral reefs before.
C. Coral reefs could reduce the impact of waves to 95%.
D. The eastern coasts of Australia were damaged seriously.
( )10. What may happen to coral reefs in the future
A. Coral reefs may disappear.
B. Coral reefs will be ignored.
C. More coral reefs may appear.
D. Few coral reefs will be planted.
( )11. What's the purpose of this passage
A. To introduce the growth of coral reefs.
B. To explain the functions of coral reefs.
C. To encourage people to plant more coral reefs.
D. To stress the importance of protecting coral reefs.

Beauty is only skin deep, but the measure of beauty is something that has worried humans for a very long time, and this is still a hot topic well into the 21st century. Whether male or female, people since ancient times have experienced judgement being passed by others based on their appearance, whether in stating preference for marriage partners, in the securing of a job, or even in offering assistance to a stranger.
From a biological angle, human beings are able to appreciate(欣赏) their own as well as the outer appearance of others. This has its basis in the physical world around us, where many living things found in nature are closely linked to the perfection that the golden ratio(黄金比例) shows. So, the pure physical perfection in the build of a male happens when the shoulder to waist ratio of a man is equal to 1.618, the golden ratio. Bodybuilders thus train to get a perfect figure in males. Likewise, women try to have an hourglass figure, through whatever ways, whether by dieting and exercise, or through make up or plastic surgery.
However, is beauty an objective feature or a subjective one considered through the “eye of the beholder(旁观者)”? Research carried out worldwide on beauty shows that the way people view beauty differs across time and culture. Hardly any common features exist across all cultures. This completely explains that cultural evaluations(评价) of beauty greatly differ.
Indeed, to borrow the words of the great poet, John Keats, “A thing of beauty is a joy for ever”, as long as we, as a human race, have the power to recognize and appreciate different forms of beauty in our fellow human beings, we will continue to increase our awareness of aesthetic(美感) and find a reason to admire and value the different aspects of beauty which make each of us uniquely beautiful.
( )12. What is the first paragraph mainly about
A. The standard of beauty is measurable.
B. People are increasingly worried about appearance.
C. Good looking people are perfect marriage partners.
D. Physical appearance is important throughout history.
( )13. What does the author want to show by mentioning the golden ratio
A. Many living things in nature are perfect.
B. People are born to appreciate appearance.
C. Men try different ways to build up strength.
D. Women get into shape by dieting and exercise.
( )14. The author probably agrees that ________.
A. we can judge a book by its cover
B. evaluations of beauty are unchangeable
C. beauty standards are closely related to culture
D. a beautiful face excuses someone from punishment
( )15. What is stressed in the last paragraph
A. Beauty can be found in different aesthetic standards.
B. Different aspects of our life are affected by aesthetic.
C. Human beings have the right to create beauty.
D. Poems have the power to express beauty.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“What will we be singing for the contest this year?” a student from my high school choir, a singing team, asked eagerly.
I hesitated this moment. “I was thinking,” I said. “Maybe we'll skip the contest and just work hard on the concerts this year.”
“No!” the kids protested.
“We've got to go to the contest!”
“In Class A.”
“It's a tradition!”
This was true. Awards lined the front wall of the music room from the past successes of large, talented classes. But a change in educational policies, with an emphasis on academic excellence, had reduced my choir to a mere thirty two students. My section leaders had graduated or been forced to drop music classes, leaving me with young, inexperienced kids who couldn't read music, couldn't hold their parts, and could sing only a simple melody or song.
“Maybe we could enter Class B this year,” I suggested, knowing even that would be a near impossible mission.
“No!” the kids screamed. “Class A!”
I shook my head. “Class A is extremely difficult.”
“We can do it!” they shouted. “We can do it!”
“I'll have to think about it,” I said, hoping their enthusiasm would die off in a couple of weeks.
But that didn't happen. If anything, the class became more fixed. Every day they begged and begged and they insisted. Because I had to protect their self pride I couldn't tell them they weren't good enough. My efforts to prevent their eagerness, by showing them a difficult piece of music from the contest list, simply ended with, “It's okay, Mrs Pliszka. We'll get it.”

第一节 One possible version:
Dear_Chris,
I_hope_this_letter_finds_you_well. As we all know, a life without a friend is a life without sunshine. Because friendships improve our lives, it's important to cultivate them.
Firstly, in order to enhance your confidence, you should often go out and actively communicate with others. As the song goes, “The more we get together, the happier we'll be.” Secondly, you should use all resources to make friends. Last but not least, you should be slow to choose friends, and slower to change friends.
I hope my tips are helpful to you.
Yours_truly,
Li_Hua
第二节 One possible version:
I_struggled_to_make_a_decision. If I destroyed their hope, would I destroy their spirit On the other hand, if we entered Class A, would they be humiliated by the judges' comments Finally one morning I walked into the class. “Kids!”I declared. “We are entering the contest in Class A …” The rest of my sentence was lost in screams of delight and applause. As the weeks progressed, each morning the kids practised singing, worked on reading music, and prepared concert music.
When_the_contest_day_finally_arrived,_the_kids_felt_ready_to_take_on_the_world! As my choir went on the stage,I mouthed, “Smile!” They looked confident. I took a deep breath, and we began. They performed masterfully. Two long hours later the results were posted. I stood frozen, staring at the list in disbelief: a first place award with the highest marks of all. All around kids were screaming and embracing. Warm tears wet my cheeks. I was surrounded by kids who had a dream, kids who refused to give up, kids who taught me to never doubt the possibility of success for any student or any class ever again.
